Besides making a class more fun, humour can be a good language learning tool. First, there are good reasons to keep stress levels low in the language classroom. People usually learn a language and use it much more easily when they are relaxed—and what reduces stress more effectively than laughter? And in a class, sharing a joke can help students and teachers build a friendly atmosphere that encourages confidence. Also, research has found that humour helps our brains feel good, making us want to learn and remember better, and that works for any subject! Humour can be a test of your language skills, too. Understanding jokes requires not just some basic knowledge of words and sentences—you need to know why they’re funny! For example, a lot of jokes are based on wordplay (双关语), so the listener may need to know more than one meaning of a word to understand the jokes. It’s no surprise that both students and teachers expect some humour in language lessons. But what kinds of jokes are the most popular? One study asked nearly 250 foreign language learners what they thought. The researchers found that students really liked it when teachers made funny comments during lessons. Students also liked funny cartoons and memes (网络梗). 29. Why does laughter help us learn language better? A. It makes us feel stressed. B. It helps us relax and remember things better. C. It can replace word knowledge. D. It helps us speak faster without thinking. 30. What can we infer from the passage? A. To understand jokes, one needs to know words'different meanings. B. All jokes in class are based on cartoons. C. Students don’t like teachers’ funny words. D. Humour only works for language learning. 31. What is the main idea of the text? A. How to tell good jokes in English class. B. Laughter helps language learning in many ways. C. Why wordplay is difficult for students. D. A study of 250 English teachers. 32. Where does the passage most probably come from? A. A travel guide. B. A science study magazine. C. A storybook for kids. D. A school sports notice. 33. How is the passage organized? A. It gives an opinion and explains reasons. B. It tells a story and gives an example. C. It lists problems and gives advice. D. It compares two different ideas. Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks (有声读物) as the main way of reading. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. But a recent study makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my ability to understand. The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel. It is based on the “dual (双重的) process model”, which means we have two ways of processing information. ★ It is quick, but easier to make mistakes. The second one has something to do with the use of logic reasoning When it is used, we think through the material step by step. Experts have designed different tests to decide which of these two ways a person is using. As one example, consider the following question: How many suns did Yu Gong shoot down? If you answered nine, perhaps you were only noticing some words of the question, which is the first way of thinking. To get to the right answer-zero, you need to think more carefully about the words of the question. They would allow you to remember it was Hou Yi who shot down the suns, not Yu Gong. That is the kind of logic reasoning process. Keysar and Geipel’s study was to find out whether seeing or hearing the information would make things different. The result was: When answering these kinds of simple questions, it was more possible for people to make mistakes when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written. It could be a problem if we depend more on our feelings when we are getting information that needs logic reasoning. For this reason, I will return to reading serious books with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy that my mind can take a break then. 34. What does the writer think of listening to audiobooks? A. It is cheap. B. It is tiring. C. It is relaxing. D. It is wasting time. 35. Which of the following can be put in ★ ? A. First, you should read the information carefully. B. The first one depends on natural ability and feeling. C. They are the key to successful understanding. D. One is reading with ears, the other is reading with eyes. 36. Processing information by using logic reasoning allows people to ________. A. think about the information carefully B. get the information without thinking C. remember the information at once D. get only the main idea of the information 37. Why are Yu Gong and Hou Yi mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To report a fact. B. To explain an opinion. C. To introduce a topic. D. To offer background information. 38. What does the writer want to tell us? A. Listening to books prevents your understanding. B. Reading serious books is good for you. C. You must think twice while reading D. Ways of processing information are different. Cathy knew that she had an essay due on Monday. However, instead of beginning work on it today, she waited until the last minute and started on Sunday night. Of course, it was impossible to do a good job writing an essay in one night, so she got a bad grade. She then kicked herself for not starting earlier and promised to do better next time, but she didn’t. Does Cathy’s story sound familiar? Like Cathy, many of us procrastinate — we put off doing something important until the last moment. But why do we do this? Some research shows that we procrastinate because of negative feelings, such as fear or worry. We are afraid of doing a poor job or getting bad grades. We think that we might fail. We put off doing the work in order to avoid having these bad feelings. Sadly, we are more likely to fail or do poorly when we procrastinate. This creates even more negative feelings and makes it more likely that we will procrastinate the next time. The long-term solution to this problem is to deal with our negative feelings. We need to forgive ourselves for failing. We need to accept that sometimes we will not meet the goal. We also need to realize that difficult work isn’t always a bad thing. It is through difficulty that we learn and grow. So what can we do? Here are some tips. First, realize that once we face our fears and get started, our fears often go away, and we start to enjoy the work. Second, break large projects into small parts, each with their own smaller deadline. Take each thing step by step. Third, reward yourself for getting a step done. Relax or do something fun, then get back to work. Finally, remove temptation (诱惑). This means if you watch TV to put off work, then work at the library. If you chat with friends to put off work, then work alone and turn off your phone. Find a place to work that does not have such distractions (干扰). In the end, it is up to you and the actions you take to overcome procrastination. So what are you waiting for? 39. Why did Cathy get a bad grade on her essay? A. She didn’t understand the topic of the essay. B. She finished her essay in only one night. C. She forgot to hand in her essay on Monday. D. She spent too much time checking her writing. 40. What does the underlined word “procrastinate” mean in Paragraph 2? 41. What is the main reason for procrastination according to the text? A. Too much homework. B. Bad working habits. C. Negative feelings like fear and worry. D. No help from others. 42. Which of the following is NOT the tip to stop procrastinating? A. Divide big tasks into small ones. B. Give yourself a reward after finishing a step. C. Stay away from things that distract you. D. Wait until you feel completely ready to start. 43. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage? A. To tell Cathy’s story of writing an essay. B. To introduce the problem of procrastination and ways to solve it. C. To show how negative feelings influence our daily life. D. To explain how to get good grades in school. B 28. 根据“try one’s best to do sth.”(尽力做某事)固定搭配,可知此处需用动词不定式。 根据“When you visit a British family”(当你拜访英国家庭时),拜访者送礼对象应为家庭主人。 根据“Remember not to ask about their personal information”(记住不要问个人信息),可知此类话题是不好的。 根据前句“show friendliness”与后句“does not mean you are very close friends”存在转折关系。 根据“British people seem quiet and reserved”与“they are polite”之间存在让步关系。 Unless除非,Because因为,When当…… 根据“not to change ourselves…to show respect”可知此处为“not…but…”结构。not…but… and并且,or或者,nor也不,无法与not构成该固定转折搭配。 根据“build good…with people”,与人建立通常是关系。relationships(关系)符合人际交往的语境。habits习惯,hobbies爱好,tasks任务,与build with people搭配不当或逻辑不通。 experience(动词,体验)符合对待文化差异的积极态度。 三、阅读理解(本大题共20小题,每小题2分,共40分) How laughter can help you learn language If you’re laughing during your English lesson, that’s probably a good thing. 29. B 30. A 31. B 32. B 33. 34. C 35. B 36. A 37. B 38. 40.
