Passage1
Small Acts, Big Changes
English
中文翻译
A better world does not appear overnight. It is built by millions of small acts that happen every day. When you help an old neighbour carry her bags, or spend an afternoon cleaning a park, you are already making your community a kinder place.
一个更美好的世界不会一夜之间出现,它是由每天发生的千千万万个小行动构建起来的。当你帮老邻居提东西,或用一个下午打扫公园时,你已经在让自己的社区变得更友善了。
Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to start. You do not need special skills or a lot of money. A middle school student can read to younger children, collect books for a village library, or visit a nursing home with classmates. What matters is not how big the act is, but whether you keep doing it.
Small acts also spread. When people see someone picking up litter, they often follow. A single volunteer may soon become a whole team. In this way, one person's good habit can slowly change the air of a whole neighbourhood.
小行动还会传播。当人们看到有人在捡垃圾时,他们常常也会跟着做。一个志愿者可能很快变成一整支队伍。就这样,一个人的好习惯可以慢慢改变整个社区的风气。
Of course, big problems like pollution and poverty need governments and scientists. But that does not mean ordinary people should wait. Everyone can play a part, and together these parts add up to real change. A better world is not a dream for the future; it is something we build today, one small act at a time.
You do not have to wait until you grow up to begin. A class can adopt a nearby street and clean it once a month. A family can save old clothes for people in need. These habits may look small, but they teach us that helping others is not a special event — it is a way of life.
你不必等到长大才开始。一个班级可以认领附近的一条街道,每月打扫一次;一个家庭可以把旧衣物留给需要的人。这些习惯看似微小,却教会我们:帮助他人不是某个特别的活动,而是一种生活方式。

Passage2
A Greener Way to Live
English
中文翻译
Many people want to protect the environment but feel that one person can do little. In fact, a greener life starts with the choices we make every day — what we buy, how we travel and how we use energy at home.
许多人都想保护环境,却觉得一个人做不了什么。事实上,更环保的生活始于我们每天做出的选择——买什么、怎样出行,以及在家里怎样使用能源。
Transport is a good place to begin. For short trips, walking or cycling is not only clean but also good exercise. For longer journeys, buses and underground trains carry many people at once, so they produce much less pollution per person than private cars.
交通是一个很好的起点。短途出行时,步行或骑车不仅清洁,而且是有益的锻炼。较长距离出行时,公交车和地铁一次能载很多人,因此人均产生的污染比私家车少得多。
At home, small habits matter too. Turning off lights when you leave a room, taking shorter showers and sorting waste all save resources. Repairing a broken chair instead of throwing it away keeps useful materials out of the rubbish bin.
在家里,小习惯同样重要。离开房间时关灯、缩短洗澡时间、进行垃圾分类,都能节约资源。把坏了的椅子修好而不是扔掉,可以让有用的材料不进入垃圾桶。
These choices may seem unimportant, but they add up. If every family in a city saved a little water and electricity, the total would be huge. A green life is not about giving up comfort; it is about using what we have more wisely.
这些选择也许看起来无关紧要,但它们会累积起来。如果一座城市的每个家庭都节约一点水和电,总数将非常可观。绿色生活并不是要放弃舒适,而是更明智地使用我们所拥有的东西。
Food is another place to think about. Buying only what we can finish keeps good food out of the bin, and eating more vegetables is healthier for us and for the planet. Small choices like these, made by millions of people, can change the world.
食物是另一个值得考虑的地方。只买能吃完的量,可以让好好的食物不进入垃圾桶;多吃蔬菜对我们和地球都更健康。像这样的小选择,由千千万万人一起做出,就能改变世界。

Passage1
Isabel was tired of filling paper into folders (文件夹) at the Gateway Nature Center’s office. She wanted badly to work with birds. But her mom, Mrs. Moreno, who was the center’s director, said Isabel was too young, “I know more about 1 than almost anyone here,” she sighed (叹气). She had never been good at speaking up for herself, and who would listen to a shy seventh grader anyway?
Amy, another volunteer, older than Isabel, suddenly broke in. “They, Isabel, I’ve got a job for you,” she barked (厉声发令) like she owned the place, 2 a hand on Isabel’s shoulder. Isabel willed herself to remain still.
Just then, Isabel’s mother rushed in with Mr. Garza, the guardian. “The hurricane (飓风) is coming,” Mrs. Moreno reported. “We may get some heavy winds. I need you girls to help Mr. Garza get the storm shutters (防风窗) down.” Isabel felt excited to have the 3 to finally help the birds. Mrs. Moreno had to go down because The Gulf Shore Preserve (海湾海岸保护区) needed help preparing for the storm. “Girls, stay with Mr. Garza after you get the storm shutters down. And Amy, call me if there are any problems,” she 4 .
Mr. Garza and the girls worked quickly. When Mr. Garza found a weather report on the computer, a worried look 5 his face. “A storm is heading our way,” he announced. “We’re in for some flooding.”
Amy called Isabel’s mother, but she sounded 6 when she hung up. “They’re stuck because of the flood! What do we do?” she cried. Mr. Garza and Amy seemed anxious at first. After silently considering the dilemma (困境), Isabel pulled herself together and said calmly, “We should move the birds to the reptile house (爬虫屋). It’s on higher ground.”
They hurried to carry the cages up. The hawks (老鹰) beat their wings when they felt the wind. Isabel spoke softly to them, and they soon grew calmer. Amy watched in amaze. Just as the water in the bird house had risen to their knees, they finished 7 the birds.
At last, Mrs. Moreno finally returned to the center after several hours. Mr. Garza told her Isabel’s cool thinking had saved the birds. Mrs. Moreno looked at her daughter 8 . “How did you get such confidence and courage?”
“I’m not sure. All I could think about was how scared the birds must have felt in their cages.” “I’m proud of you, Isabel,” said Mrs. Moreno.
“I guess I’m proud of myself, Mom!”

Passage2
On Feb. 13 China released(发布)its “No. 1 central document(中央一号文件)” for 2023. It lists nine tasks for comprehensively promoting rural vitalization (全面促进乡村振兴) this year, Xinhua reported. For 20 years in a row, China’s first policy statement has focused on agriculture(农业)and rural areas.
For the first time, the idea of building a strong agricultural country was seen in the No. 1 central document. The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China put forward the idea of moving faster to build up China’s strength in agriculture. Now the document brings specific measures (措施) to make it come true, experts said.
The first most important is to ensure (确保) food security. China’s grain output (粮食产量) has reached above 650 billion kilograms for eight years in a row, according to Tang Renjian, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (农业农村部部长). However, with a growing population and more consumption (消费), the need for grain is still growing. And the uncertain global agricultural trade makes it harder to ensure food supply, Tang said.
China will protect its planting area while increasing production levels. The document has shown specific ways to protect fields such as banning(禁止)the stealing of black soil(黑土)and stopping catching earthworms (蚯蚓) with electricity. It also encourages projects to increase the yields (产量) of soybeans(大豆)and corn, and develop smart facilities (设施) in farming.
Another highlight (亮点) of the document is to ensure no large-scale return to poverty(贫穷). How to increase farmers’ income(收入)is always a central task in agriculture, said Wu Hongyao, an officer of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
China will work hard to develop business and help workers keep their jobs. More than 60 percent of the central government subsidies (补贴) for rural vitalization are used to develop local business, according to the document. Over 30 million people who have shaken off poverty will get jobs, too.
9.What idea was seen in the No. 1 central document for the first time?
A.Protecting planting area.
B.Building a strong agricultural country.
C.Increasing production levels.
10.What does the underlined phrase “food security” in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese?
A.粮食安全 B.食品生产 C.食品质量
11.How will our country help farmers to increase their income according to the document?
A.Catch earthworms with electricity.
B.Steal black soil.
C.Develop local business.
12.How many specific ways to protect fields are mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four.
Passage3
With rural revitalization (乡村振兴) and the fast development of economy (经济) and technology, many Chinese villages have changed a lot. Xiajiang Village in Zhejiang Province is a good example. It has turned from a quiet and poor place into a modern and lively one, especially in housing and travelling.
In the past, villagers in Xiajiang Village lived in old houses made of wood and mud (泥). The walls were thin, so the houses were cold in winter and hot in summer. There were no clean toilets, and people had to carry water from a river far away every day. Life was hard and inconvenient. Now, with government support and more money from the growing economy, these old houses are gone. New houses stand in rows in Xiajiang Village, with bright rooms and clean yards. They use clean energy for lighting and heating, which helps reduce pollution. Villagers in Xiajiang Village now live comfortably and safely.
Travelling in Xiajiang Village has improved greatly too. Years ago, the village only had narrow dirt roads. When it rained, the roads became dirty. Villagers walked or rode bikes to the town, which took several hours. Selling produce was difficult because of bad roads. Today, wide new roads connect Xiajiang Village to the city. Buses run four times a day, and many families in the village have their own cars. More tourists come to visit Xiajiang Village and local farmers can sell their fruit and vegetables to big cities quickly. New ways of travelling bring more jobs and money to Xiajiang Village.
These changes in Xiajiang Village take place because of rural revitalization. It gives the village support and money. Economy provides enough money for building houses and roads, while technology makes life easier and smarter. Xiajiang Village is becoming richer and more beautiful. It is believed that all Chinese villages will have a bright future.
13.What’s the characteristic of the new houses in Xiajiang Village?
A.They are usually built in a circle.
B.They are made of stone and wood.
C.They are environmentally friendly.
D.They are joined to a river far away.
14.How does the writer describe travelling in Paragraph 3?
A.By showing reasons and results.
B.By showing experiences and feelings.
C.By comparing the past with the present.
D.By comparing advantages with disadvantages.
15.What leads to the increase in tourists to Xiajiang Village?
A.Its beautiful view. B.Its perfect position. C.Its new technology. D.Its improved traffic.
16.Which can be the best title (标题) for the text?
A.From Mud to Hope B.Fast Travel, Slow Life
C.From Home to Traffic D.Small House, Big Village
Passage4
In 2023, India might have a larger population than China. That means the Earth is getting more crowded because there will be more people in the world. However, the growth may not last forever.
Low birth rate(率)
While the global population is still growing, its growth rate is at its slowest since 1950 because of fewer babies. It’s reported that fertility has greatly fallen in recent years in many countries and areas.
More older people
A low birth rate means fewer young people to care for the growing aging population worldwide. By 2025, the world should expect to see far more people with gray hair living longer.
China recorded 10.62 million births in 2021, a drop of 11.5 percent from 12 million in 2020. China’s population growth is set to turn negative (负的) by 2025.
In a major push to deal with the problem, the government said on May 31, 2021 that all families can have up to three children. It introduced a number of supportive ways to encourage births.
Housing
Families with more than one child are more likely to get public rental housing.
Work
Companies may give workers time to send and pick up children from school.
Education
Kindergartens should receive younger children aged 2—3. Normally they only receive children older than age 3.
Baby care rooms
Public areas shall build more baby care rooms for mothers to feed their babies or change diapers (尿布).
17.Which country of the following might have the largest population in 2023?
A.China. B.The US. C.India. D.Pakistan.
18.The underlined word “fertility” probably means “________” in Chinese.
A.人口老龄 B.人口生育 C.人口红利 D.人口普查
19.From the last paragraph, what do we know about supportive ways?
A.Families with no child are more likely to get public rental housing.
B.Kindergartens should receive younger children aged 3—4.
C.Public areas will build more baby care rooms for mothers.
D.Companies must give workers money to send and pick up children from school.
20.The passage may come from ________.
A.a newspaper B.a dictionary C.a storybook D.an advertisement
Passage5
If you have ever been to Qinghai, you may get the sense of water falling from the sky. In the south of Qinghai Province lies Sanjiangyuan, the meeting place of waters that give birth to the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Lancang River, which is known to the world as the Mekong (湄公河).
Each year, Sanjiangyuan sends nearly 60 billion cubic metres of clean fresh water to 18 provinces in China and 5 other countries. It is the lifeline of hundreds of millions of people. For much of China, it is a main water source and is called the “Water-Tower of the Nation”. As the saying goes, “When Sanjiangyuan sneezes (打喷嚏), the Yangtze and the Yellow River catch a cold.”
But this land is rich not only in water. Rising at an average (平均的) height of 3,500 to 4,800 metres, Sanjiangyuan rests in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原)—the Roof of the World. It is the highest place on Earth where so many living things can be found. Here, nature protects some of its most precious forms of life. However, this area was once in danger from poaching (非法捕猎). The Tibetan antelope (藏羚羊) suffered the most, with numbers falling sharply from around 200,000 to fewer than 20,000.
To save Sanjiangyuan and Tibetan antelope, people took effective actions. The government made strict laws against poaching and built nature reserves (保护区), while volunteers helped protect animals. As a result, the numbers of the Tibetan antelope are rising, and the beautiful land is well protected.
Remember, our efforts today will keep the “Water Tower of the Nation” alive for tomorrow. So let’s learn to be responsible guardians of our planet.
21.What is Sanjiangyuan mainly described as in Paragraph 1?
A.The birthplace of three big rivers. B.A famous tourist attraction. C.The highest plateau in China.
22.What does the underlined phrase “catch a cold” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Make people feel sick. B.Experience colder weather. C.Have serious water problems.
23.What caused the number of Tibetan antelope to drop?
A.Climate change. B.Animal hunting. C.Water pollution.
24.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To suggest visiting Sanjiangyuan. B.To call for environmental protection. C.To introduce nature reserves in Qinghai.
Passage6
Are you avoiding pain or living with a purpose?
There are two paths we can take in any given situation: One is the path of avoiding pain at the moment, and the other is the more difficult path of delaying (推迟) pleasure for a bigger purpose.
Some people don’t see the value in having patience during difficult times or working towards a goal. They would rather buy the latest, greatest cellphone than save for retirement (退休). We often make our life choices according to how we can avoid pain at the moment and, in doing so, fail to see that the path of delaying gratification (满足) is sometimes where the real solutions to our problems lie.
Studies show that delaying gratification is one of the most effective personal qualities of successful people. People who learn how to manage their needs that need to be satisfied at the moment thrive (蓬勃发展) more in their careers, relationships and health than people who give in to them.
A well-known study conducted at Stanford University in the 1960s explains a lot about why it’s beneficial to delay gratification. In the study, children were placed in a room with one marshmallow on a plate. The leading researcher gave the children an easy instruction: You can eat the marshmallow now, or wait 15 minutes and receive two marshmallows. The researchers found that the children who were able to wait for the second marshmallow without eating the first one scored higher on standardized tests, had better health, and were less likely to have behavior problems.
Consider the result of this study, and think about yourself and your actions. Are you able to wait for things you really want, even if it involves giving up pleasure and satisfaction now? Do you make decisions based on your life purpose or on what feels good now? Do you sometimes give up too soon? Can you think of a time when you successfully completed a difficult task? How did it make you feel about yourself? What were the results of waiting?
Delaying gratification isn’t a new concept. Back in 300 BC, Aristotle saw that the reason why so many people were unhappy was that they confused pleasure with true happiness.
True happiness, according to Aristotle, is about developing habits and surrounding yourself with people who grow your soul (灵魂). This allows you to move towards your greatest natural ability. True happiness needs delaying pleasure, and putting in the time, discipline and patience required to achieve a goal instead of feeling good now.
A life of purposes, aligned (保持一致) with the pursuit of true happiness, creates real joy. It keeps your happiness pretty steady (稳定的) throughout your life. So, which path would you like to take?
25.People who delay gratification will probably ________.
A.avoid pain and give up at the moment
B.work hard patiently for a bigger goal
C.fail to see where the real solutions to their problems lie
D.fail easily in their careers, relationships and health
26.Why does the writer mention the well-known study in Paragraph 4?
A.To show children’s different choices.
B.To tell readers the study was a very scientific one.
C.To prove the value of putting off gratification.
D.To explain why some children were more successful.
27.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.a purposeful life can bring us real joy
B.pleasure helps us to make correct decisions
C.pleasure plays a key role in a life of purposes
D.true happiness is about avoiding pain at the moment
28.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To encourage us to delay pleasure for a bigger purpose.
B.To explain the meanings of pleasure and true happiness.
C.To compare two different paths to a life of purposes.
D.To discuss the good effects of delaying gratification.
Passage7
A new 1,200-square-meter store in Shanghai’s Putuo district is becoming a big hit with the city’s seniors. Since opening in late 2024, the Shanghai Modern Aging Store has seen booming (蓬勃发展的) sales. Many visitors, some even in their 90s, travel across the city with newspaper clippings (剪报) in hand to find it. This special shop is designed just for older people, helping them find tools and gadgets (小装置) that make their daily lives easier and more comfortable.
Inside, the store looks like a real home. There are “model rooms” where seniors can test special beds and toilets that help reduce knee pain. One of the most exciting sections features (以……为特色) “exoskeleton robots”. These are smart machines people wear to help them walk more easily. Because many seniors find it hard to buy technology online, the store has friendly staff to show them exactly how everything works. This way, they can try things on and make sure they are happy before buying.
The store isn’t just about high-tech robots. It also sells simple things that are hard to find elsewhere. For example, 75-year-old Lin Lan visited to find warm pants that weren’t just for “young people”. Experts say this store is important because over 37% of Shanghai’s residents (居民) are now over 60 years old. By providing a place to touch, feel, and test products, the city is helping its older citizens stay independent, active, and connected to the modern world.
29.How do many elderly people find the special aging store?
A.They learn about it from TV news.
B.They follow the online introduction.
C.They go there with newspaper clippings.
30.Why is the store popular among the old?
A.It offers enough space to the old.
B.It provides things in need for them .
C.It is widely advertised in the newspapers.
31.What can we know from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A.The store’s service is in great need and meaningful.
B.Shanghai has the largest number of seniors in China.
C.Seniors in Shanghai are more independent than those in other cities.
32.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.A Special Store for Seniors in Shanghai
B.A High-Tech Helper for Seniors in Shanghai
C.A Comfortable Home for Seniors in Shanghai
Passage8
In the past, the Tala Desert in Qinghai was described by the saying, “When the wind blows, stones roll and no grass grows.” Covering more than 600 square kilometers, 98.5% of this empty land has turned into desert. Almost nothing could live there. Yet, because it receives plenty of sunlight, this “lifeless place” was chosen as the site for one of China’s biggest solar power stations.
In 2012, the first sets of solar panels (太阳能板) were set up. They were only meant to collect sunlight to produce electricity, but something unexpected happened for the environment. The panels worked like large sunshades. They reduced direct sunlight, slowed down wind erosion (侵蚀), and helped the soil keep its moisture. In just a few years, plant coverage increased from less than 2% to 80%.
However, new problems soon arose. The rapidly growing grass started to block sunlight from reaching the panels. This reduced electricity production and raised the risk of fires. Using chemical weed killers damaged the weak ecosystem, and asking people to cut the grass cost millions of yuan every year. Then, a local herder (牧民) half-jokingly suggested, “Why not let sheep eat the grass?”
In 2016, 600 Tibetan sheep officially “started working.” They ate the grass under the panels, keeping it short and improving the soil with their waste. In return, the sheep grew healthier. The herders voluntarily joined the project and even formed a small group to take turns managing the areas, making sure the grass and sheep stay in balance. This created a lasting system of “solar power above, sheep below.” The power station saved on cleaning costs, herders made more money, and the land became healthier.
Today, the Tala Desert now supplies over 100 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually and the number of sheep has increased to over 20,000, creating millions of yuan in value every year. The tale of the “photovoltaic sheep” (光伏羊) shows that when humans cooperate with nature instead of fighting it, even the toughest desert can glow with the hope of sustainable development (可持续发展).
33.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the problem in the desert. B.To provide the background for the solar project.
C.To show the view of the Tala Desert. D.To explain how solar energy works.
34.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.The fast-growing grass helped increase electricity production.
B.A local scientist first thought of letting sheep eat the grass.
C.Using chemical weed killers was useful and helpful.
D.Asking people to cut grass cost a great deal of money.
35.What are the achievements of the whole project?
①It generates tons of clean electricity.
②It stopped the wind from blowing in the desert.

Passage9
The Silk Road (丝绸之路) is neither an actual road nor a single route (路线). The term instead refers to a network of routes used by traders for more than 1,500 years, which went from China to Eastern Europe. The Silk Road went along the northern borders of China, through India, and Persia and ended up in Eastern Europe near today’s Türkiye and the Mediterranean Sea.
It was called the Silk Road because one of the major traded products was silk cloth from China. Besides silk, the Chinese also exported (出口) tea, salt, sugar, porcelain, and spices. Most of what was traded was expensive luxury goods. This was because it was a long trip and merchants (商人) didn’t have a lot of room for goods. They imported, or bought, goods like cotton, ivory, wool, gold, and silver.
Merchants traveled in large caravans (车队). They would have many guards with them. Traveling in this way helped in defending from bandits (土匪). Camels were popular animals for transport because much of the route was through dry and harsh land.
Although there had been some trade between China and the rest of the world for some time, the silk trade was significantly expanded (发展) by the Han Dynasty. Later, under the rule of the Yuan Dynasty, set up by Kublai Khan of the Mongols, trade from China along the Silk Road would reach its peak. During this time the Mongols controlled a significant portion (部分) of the trade route, enabling Chinese merchants to travel safely.
The Silk Road was important because it helped to generate trade between a number of different kingdoms and empires. This helped for ideas, culture, inventions, and unique products to spread across much of the settled world.
The Silk Road was over 4,000 miles long. There wasn’t just one route, but many routes. Some were shorter, but more dangerous. Others took longer, but were safer.

Passage10
Walking around the city, you will see girls wearing hanfu on the underground or people wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters in the streets. A new trend (趋势) is getting popular in China. It is guochao or China-Chic. Guochao adds traditional Chinese culture into products, and it shows the rising of China’s native fashion.
Guochao got people’s attention in 2018. Before that, the market was controlled by foreign companies. There were few Chinese brands (品牌). In the past, to win the market share, many brands followed the footsteps of these western brands and some of the Chinese brands even used the English names. In 2018, Chinese sportswear Li-Ning made changes to the situation. It introduced its Wu Dao collection to the world. The collection not only looked fashionable but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. It quickly caught people’s attention at home and abroad. It created amazing sales.
Later, many Chinese brands, from food, drinks and clothing to mobile phones and cars, started to add Chinese culture to their products. Even the film and music industries made every effort to create Chinese styles. “We want our products to be the ones that young people would like to share,” they said. These brands got what they wanted. Young people gradually changed their attention from western culture to guochao. They accepted it with pleasure. What’s more, they started to develop their interest in traditional Chinese art and literature. Now they wear traditional clothes, practice Chinese calligraphy (书法) and play Chinese musical instruments. Some of them are working together to spread Chinese culture to people around the world.
At the same time, people of different ages start to choose products “made in China”. According to a survey, 68% of Chinese people prefer Chinese brands. Among them, 62% say they are open to international brands, but local brands remain the first choice.
No matter how guochao develops, there is one thing that won’t change — People’s confidence in our country’s development and culture is growing.
41.From Paragraph 1, who DOESN’T follow the trend of guochao?
A.Li Meng, a girl who wears the traditional clothes which were popular in Han Dynasty
B.Sun Yue, a student performing a piece of music by erhu.
C.Hu Ming, a boy carrying a handbag with the picture of the famous poet Li Bai.
42.According to the passage, why did many Chinese brands use some English names in the past?
A.Because the English names were very fashionable.
B.Because the English names were easy to remember.
C.Because they wanted to sell more products.
43.What does the underlined word “elements” mean in Chinese in Paragraph 2?
A.结构 B.元素 C.发展
44.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce some Chinese brands and western brands to people.
B.To call on more and more people to love our traditional culture.
C.To tell us that a new kind of fashion called guochao is becoming popular in China.
Passage11
Are you avoiding pain or living with purpose?
There are two paths we can take in any given situation: one is the path of avoiding pain in the moment, and the other is the more difficult path of delaying (推迟) pleasure for a bigger purpose.
Some people don’t see the value in having patience during difficult times or working toward a goal; they want to lose the weight now and would rather buy the latest, greatest cell phone than save for retirement (退休). We often make our life choices according to how we can avoid pain in the moment and, in doing so, fail to see that the path of delayed gratification (满足) is sometimes where the real solutions to our problems lie.
Studies show that delayed gratification is one of the most effective personal qualities of successful people. People who learn how to manage their need to be satisfied in the moment thrive (蓬勃发展) more in their careers, relationships and health than people who give in to it.
A well-known study conducted at Stanford University in the 1960s explains a lot about why it’s beneficial to delay gratification. In the study, children were placed in a room with one marshmallow on a plate. The lead researcher gave the children an easy instruction: You can eat the marshmallow now, or wait 15 minutes and receive two marshmallows. The researchers found that the children who were able to wait for the second marshmallow without eating the first one scored higher on standardized tests, had better health, and were less likely to have behavior problems.
Consider the results of this study, and think about yourself and your actions.
Back in 300 B.C., Aristotle saw that the reason why so many people were unhappy was that they confused pleasure for true happiness.
True happiness, according to Aristotle, is about developing habits and surrounding yourself with people who grow your soul (灵魂). This allows you to move toward your greatest natural ability. True happiness needs delaying pleasure, and putting in the time, discipline and patience required to achieve a goal instead of feeling good now.
A life of purpose, aligned (保持一致) with the seeking of true happiness, creates real joy. It keeps your happiness meter pretty steady (稳定的) throughout your life. So, which path would you like to take?
45.People who delay gratification will probably ________.
A.avoid pain and give up in the moment
B.work hard patiently for a bigger goal
C.fail to see where the real solutions to their problems lie
D.succeed easily in their careers, relationships and health
46.Why does the writer mention the well-known study in Paragraph 5?
A.To show children’s different choices.
B.To tell readers the study was very scientific.
C.To prove the value of putting off gratification.
D.To explain why some children were more successful.
47.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.a purposeful life can bring us real joy
B.pleasure helps us to make correct decisions
C.pleasure plays a key role in a life of purpose
D.true happiness is about avoiding pain in the moment
48.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To encourage us to delay pleasure for a bigger purpose.
B.To explain the meanings of pleasure and true happiness.
C.To compare two different paths to a life of purpose.
D.To discuss the good effects of delayed gratification.

Passage13
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a common tool in our daily lives. From helping us draw and write to finding answers in seconds, AI is getting smarter every day. With its rapid development, some people worry that AI might one day take over human jobs and even replace (替代) humans in many areas.
However, I believe AI will never truly replace humans. Here are several reasons to support this view.
First of all, AI doesn’t have feelings. It can generate a beautiful painting in just a few seconds, but it does so without any feeling. It does not experience joy, sadness, or love while creating. Human art, on the other hand, is full of emotion. Only humans can truly express what is in their hearts, and only humans can care for others in a deep and meaningful way.
Secondly, humans are naturally creative. We can think in new ways and come up with original (独创的) ideas. AI, by contrast, can only work with the data (数据) it has been given. It learns from what we teach it and cannot produce anything truly new or original. Human imagination allows us to dream, explore, and innovate in ways that machines simply cannot.
Third, humans have the ability to tell right from wrong. We make decisions based on values, morals and empathy (价值观、道德和同理心). AI may follow data and logic, but it does not truly understand the importance of its actions. It cannot feel guilty, sympathy, or a sense of justice.
In conclusion, AI is a powerful and helpful tool, but it is not a replacement for human beings. It can help us, make us more efficient, and inspire new ideas, but it cannot feel, imagine, or judge like we do. To succeed in the future, we must continue to develop our hearts and minds — qualities that make us unique (独特的) human.
53.What can AI do according to the passage?
A.It can feel happy or sad. B.It can think like a human.
C.It can tell right from wrong. D.It can help us draw and write.
54.Which of the following would the writer most likely agree with?

B.Humans should keep learning and growing their own abilities.
C.Creativity is not important in the age of AI.
D.AI can teach humans how to be more creative.
55.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

B.Humans and AI both have the ability to tell right from wrong.
C.The writer thinks AI will soon replace humans in most areas.
D.AI can only work with the data it has been given.
56.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.AI can work by itself without any human data.
B.AI is better than humans at being creative.
C.Humans should stop using AI because it is dangerous.
D.AI is useful, but humans have unique qualities that cannot be replaced.

③It greatly improved the local environment.
④It helps the local herders to raise sheep.
A.①②④ B.①③④ C.②③④ D.①②③
36.What can we infer from the text?
A.Local herders supported the project and took part in it actively.
B.The project will be widely used in all deserts around China.
C.The main goal of the solar power station was to improve the environment.
D.The success of the “photovoltaic sheep” project only happened by chance.

47.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.a purposeful life can bring us real joy
B.pleasure helps us to make correct decisions
