There has never been a music documentary like I Am: Celine Dion, an oddly attractive yet puzzling cross between Spinal Tap (摇滚万万岁), Sunset Boulevard and an upsetting medical journey. A day after watching it, I’m still not sure how I actually feel about it.
It is routine for showbusiness documentaries to indicate that we have never seen their star like this before. In this case, it is actually true. Indeed, I don’t think a major star has ever allowed themselves to be filmed in such exposed and sensitive situations. We see the Canadian superstar in the full violent pains of a medical emergency, her body going into rictus, hands twisted, limbs frozen, teeth bared, tears streaming from her eyes as she groans (呻吟) in pain.
In 2021, the 54-year-old was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome (僵人综合征), a rare neurological disorder only found in one in a million, which attacks the muscular system causing spasms, inflexibility, breathing problems, and chronic pain. Crucially for one of the most famous and technically gifted singers of our times, it affects her voice. “My voice was the conductor of my life,” Dion tells the camera in one of many frank and emotional interviews, speaking slowly, deliberately. “Music … I miss it a lot.”
Oscar-nominated producer and director Irene Taylor had already begun pre-production on a Dion documentary when the diagnosis was revealed. “It is a film filled with tragedy, sympathy and unintended comedy, artfully made yet uncertain of its own track.”
Dion is experiencing a health crisis, although slightly softened by the advantages of her wealth and fame. It is astonishing that cameras were on hand to capture (捕捉) this in such close detail, and perhaps even more astonishing that such a public figure decided to allow filming to continue. “I still see myself dancing and singing,” she insists. “If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. But I won’t stop. I won’t stop.”
24. What can we know about Celine Dion?
A. She is a Canadian singer and director. B. Her illness has effect on her voice.
C. She is not eager to return to the stage. D. She is 54 years old now.
25. When did Taylor start to prepare for the Dion documentary?
A. Before the discovery of Dion’s illness was publicized.
B. After Dion discharged herself from hospital.
C. When Dion’s new CD was released.
D. After Dion required her to do so.
26. Which words can best describe Celine Dion?
A. Shy and weak. B. Fortunate and gifted.
C. Tough and determined. D. Selfless and helpless.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To criticize the music documentary. B. To introduce Celine Dion’s deadly illness.
C. To promote Celine Dion’s new songs. D. To inspire readers to follow Celine Dion’s spirits.

In the Western world, parents are urged to talk to their babies soon after they’re born — and to keep talking to them. This didn’t come out of nowhere. Decades of research suggest that incessant child-directed speech might be the main driver of language development.
But there’s a problem with much of this research — it originates from Western countries. In the Western nations, people often live in small, isolated families, their lives enriched by technology. But for much of humanity’s existence, people didn’t live like this. This raises a question. Is frequent adult-to-child direct speech really the single, best way to language development?
Recently, Ruthe Foushee, an Assistant Professor and Director of the Human Language Center, and her team travelled to Southern Mexico to learn from the Tseltal Maya community.
A previous study found that in the Tseltal Maya community, children under age three are spoken to by adults or other children for just over three-and-a-half minutes per hour — three times less than babies in the US and Canada. However, young Tseltal children do overhear roughly 21 minutes of speech each hour. This study predicts that Tseltal babies should have minimal lexical (词汇的) knowledge, given that they rarely received direct speech.
In an experiment, using the same techniques to test the language knowledge of babies in Western countries, Foushee found that Tseltal babies aged five to 16 months matched the skills of similarly aged Western babies. The experiment assessed babies’ knowledge of nouns, including food, objects, and animals. The results show that human babies are clearly capable of learning language through observation, suggesting that talking directly to young children is not a requirement.
“Our study emphasizes the importance of cross-cultural work; all of the work done on child-directed language in Western countries may lead to the false impression that that is the best way to parent. However, recognizing the differences across cultures in how children learn and use language challenges these assumptions,” Foushee said.
28. What does the underlined word “incessant” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Limited. B. Professional. C. Continual. D. Understandable.
29. What is the problem of the research conducted in the Western countries?
A. It focused on technological advancements.
B. It overlooked the diversity of social lifestyles.
C. It ignored the impact of parental education on language learning.
D. It didn’t consider the role of non-verbal communication in babies.
30. What does Foushee’s study indicate?
A. Direct speech is universally crucial for language learning.
B. Observation proves to be effective for language learning.
C. Cultural factors rarely influence language development.
D. Technology has a role to play in early language learning.
31. What is the significance of Foushee’s study on language development?
A. It compares language skills between different age groups.
B. It advocates for technology-based language learning methods.
C. It stresses the role of economic factors in language learning.
D. It challenges traditional views on early language acquisition.

Hot weather adds to the challenge of competing at the Olympics in summer. “The combination of heat and humidity (湿度) can really overwhelm an athlete,” says Dr. Francis O’Connor, a professor at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Md.
One of the best approaches to deal with it, O’Connor says, is heat acclimatization, also known as heat training. The idea involves controlled exposure to heat stress, which causes changes to the body that help it deal with hot, humid conditions. Heat training is not just for competitive athletes. It’s recommended for those who work outdoors in hot weather.
Done right, heat training could help people stay a bit more comfortable in the long stretches of heat marking the extraordinarily hot summer of this year and future heat waves expected more frequently due to climate change. The advice from National Singapore University’s Lee is to take it slow and easy, with long rest breaks in between. He says, “Exercise every other day progressively in a hot environment. On Monday, go for a 15-minute walk, rest on Tuesday, go for 30-minute walk on Wednesday, rest on Thursday — you get the idea.”
Over several weeks of regular heat exposure, the body starts to adapt to cool down more efficiently. “The very clear one is an increase in your ability to sweat, which cools the body down,” Lee says.
While heat training might help some, it won’t be a cure-all for extreme heat. Instead, it’s a piece of a larger strategy for how to approach the hot days safely. When it comes to heat, stay cool, stay hydrated (含水的), and stay connected by checking on your friends, family and neighbours throughout heat season.
And if you’re out in the heat — keep an eye out for signs of heat illness in yourself or those around you. If you’re having a terrible headache, this is really a time to tell yourself you’ve got to step back, cool down, slow your pace.
32. What is O’Connor’s main concern for athletes at the Olympics in summer?
A. The extreme heat and humidity. B. The challenge of language barriers.
C. The absence of security measures. D. The lack of suitable training facilities.
33. What does Lee suggest doing to approach heat training?
A. Exercising at night to avoid heat hours.
B. Performing workouts daily within 30 minutes.
C. Using fans and air conditioning during training.
D. Gradually increasing exposure to heat with rest in between.
34. What benefit is associated with regular heat exposure?
A. Decreased need for sunscreen.
B. Increased efficiency in cooling the body.
C. Reduced need for hydration during physical activity.
D. Enhanced resistance to extreme weather conditions.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Climate Change and Its Impact on Sports Events
B. Strategies for Coping with Hot Weather Conditions
C. Understanding Heat Acclimatization and Its Benefits
D. Challenges of Competing in the Summer Olympics

For many college students, dorm life is an introduction to independent living — their very first “home away from home”. And as exciting as this chapter is, it’s also a challenge: ____36____ Here are some tips for you.
Stick to simple and affordable. College isn’t the time for investing in high-quality pieces. ____37____ And unless you plan to have a bean bag chair in your first apartment or sleep on a twin bed forever, you probably won’t take a lot of your college furnishings with you into post-college life.
____38____ “Talk to your roommate and make a plan for who’s bringing what,” advises Lauren Phillips, associate editorial director at Better Homes & Gardens. Letting everyone feel like they have a say in the room can go a long way towards building a strong relationship.
Make a comfortable hangout. Since you can stream on other devices, a TV might not be worth the space. You can choose something better: a projector (投影仪). ____39____ You can set up a movie night in just a few minutes. For extra seating, get some foldable chairs that can be put away.
There’s no rush. ____40____ You’ll learn how you function best in this new environment throughout your first semester, so make sure your space can grow with you. Consider starting with minimal decoration in your dorm room to allow flexibility as you discover your preferences and needs in this new living environment.
A. Make sure you and your roommates are on the same page.
B. Find more about the room.
C. How do you turn one room into a comfortable space?
D. The items of your college life are going to wear out quick.
E. How can you build a good relationship with roommates?
F. There are great mini ones now that connect easily to your device.
G. Think twice before making any major changes to your dorm room.

Ten years ago, Kristin Schell and her husband and their four children moved to a new home in Austin, Texas. She tried to connect with her new neighbours by hosting Bible studies and playgroups. But those activities required planning ahead and coordinating schedules, not to mention cooking and cleaning.
One day, Kristin needed backyard furniture for a party and bought a few picnic tables from Lowe’s. The delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake, and Kristin couldn’t get the image out of her head. “After the party, I painted the table turquoise green — my favourite colour — and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk,” she says.
That turquoise green table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. Activities they used to do at the kitchen table, they now did out front at the picnic table. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. “We got intentional about where we spent our time,” Kristin says. “We became ‘front yard people’.”
Neighbours began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. “It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says. The turquoise green table was inviting and had a communal (共有的) feel.
Construction workers on jobs in the neighbourhood took their lunch breaks at the table. A babysitter walking by with her young charges sat down to rest. Then neighbours asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. A movement was born.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it’s not big enough or they don’t have enough time. “Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses — and the pressure.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Hospitality (好客) doesn’t always mean entertaining people with a meal or a big party,” Kristin said.

Not all of the tables in Texas and other states are actually turquoise green.

【答案】18. A 19. C 20. C
【解析】
【原文】 A dog’s loyalty is an unbreakable bond, a determined devotion that knows no limits, even in the face of danger. Earlier this month, a family’s dog sprang into action to save one of his owners during a terrible incident in New Hampshire. 86-year-old Ned Tarmey is recovering in the hospital after being attacked by a neighbour outside his Manchester home. Family members credit the family dog for saving his life. Brittney Ardizzoni, Ned’s great-niece, said the man was throwing outdoor furniture, chairs, bricks, and rocks. “When he opened up the door, he got hit by a brick,” Jeff Tarmey, the sufferer’s nephew said. The family dog, Kane, described by family members as “sweet and affectionate”, quickly went into protective mode, catching the man and holding him down until authorities arrived. The attack appears to have been accidental, as Ned and the attacker had never met before the incident. Ned is continuing his recovery in the hospital after being discharged from the ICU. He was reunited with Kane in his hospital bed, telling his loyal dog, “You saved my life!”

【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. D

【答案】28. C 29. B 30. B 31. D
根据原文第一段“In the Western world, parents are urged to talk to their babies soon after they’re born — and to keep talking to them.(在西方世界,家长被督促在婴儿出生后尽快和他们说话,并且持续和他们交谈)”及“Decades of research suggest that incessant child-directed speech might be the main driver of language development.(数十年的研究表明,incessant专门对孩子说的话语,或许是语言发展的主要推动力)”可知,incessant用来形容不断对孩子说的话语,意思是“持续不断的”,与Continual意思相同。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据原文第二段“But there’s a problem with much of this research — it originates from Western countries. In the Western nations, people often live in small, isolated families, their lives enriched by technology. But for much of humanity’s existence, people didn’t live like this.(但是很多这类研究存在一个问题:这些研究都源自西方国家。在西方国家,人们通常生活在小型、独立的家庭中,生活因科技而丰富。但在人类历史的大部分时间里,人们并不是这样生活的)”可知,这些西方研究忽视了社会生活方式的多样性。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据原文第五段“The results show that human babies are clearly capable of learning language through observation, suggesting that talking directly to young children is not a requirement.(结果表明,人类婴儿显然能够通过观察学习语言,这说明直接和幼儿说话并不是必备条件)”可知,观察对于语言学习来说是有效的方式。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文最后一段“However, recognizing the differences across cultures in how children learn and use language challenges these assumptions(然而,认识到不同文化里儿童学习和使用语言的方式存在差异,对这些固有看法提出了质疑)”可知,这项研究挑战了关于幼儿语言习得的传统观点。
D
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B 35. C

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The advice from National Singapore University’s Lee is to take it slow and easy, with long rest breaks in between. He says, “Exercise every other day progressively in a hot environment. On Monday, go for a 15 minute walk, rest on Tuesday, go for 30 minute walk on Wednesday, rest on Thursday — you get the idea. ”(新加坡国立大学的李建议慢慢来,放松一下,中间安排长时间的休息。他说:“在炎热环境中每隔一天锻炼,逐步增加运动量。周一,散步15分钟,周二休息,周三散步30分钟,周四休息——你会明白的。”)”可知,Lee建议逐步增加热暴露并穿插休息。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Over several weeks of regular heat exposure, the body starts to adapt to cool down more efficiently. “The very clear one is an increase in your ability to sweat, which cools the body down,” Lee says.(经过几周的定期高温暴露,身体开始适应环境,进而能够更高效地降温。李说:“最明显的是,你出汗的能力会增强,这会让身体降温。”)”可知,规律热暴露能提高身体降温效率。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,再结合第一段的“Hot weather adds to the challenge of competing at the Olympics in summer.(炎热的天气增加了夏天参加奥运会的挑战)”以及第二段的“One of the best approaches to deal with it, O’Connor says, is heat acclimatization, also known as heat training.(O’Connor说,解决这个问题的最佳方法之一是热适应,也称为热训练)”可知,文章围绕热适应展开,介绍其含义、做法、益处及注意事项,故最佳标题为“了解热适应及其益处”。

【答案】36. C 37. D 38. A 39. F 40. G

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Hospitality (好客) doesn’t always mean entertaining people with a meal or a big party,” Kristin said.

Not all of the tables in Texas and other states are actually turquoise green.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
“Hospitality (好客) doesn’t always mean entertaining people with a meal or a big party,” Kristin said. Instead, the picnic table serves as a welcoming space where neighbours can gather and engage in casual conversations. The simplicity of sharing a cup of coffee or a cold drink eliminates the stress associated with hosting large gatherings. This concept aligns with the essence of her movement, which is centred around fostering connections within communities. Many years after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Green Tables exist in nearly all states in America.
Not all of the tables in Texas and other states are actually turquoise green. Some have adopted different colours to match their personal preferences or school colours, like the purple tables at Texas Christian University. However, regardless of their colour, these tables embody the same principle: they are symbols of friendship and community-building. The Turquoise Green Tables initiative has not only spread across the United States but also reached international shores, proving its universal appeal in bridging gaps between neighbours.

①聚集:gather/get together/assemble
②培养,建立:foster/build up/cultivate
