While autumn leaf-peeping beckons travellers to places like New York City’s Central Park, spring blossoms and off-peak deals are among the main draws for destinations in the Southern Hemisphere. Elsewhere, Egypt is perfect for extending summer a little further while Madagascar welcomes a new generation of ring-tailed lemurs. Madagascar The final few weeks of the dry season make this tropical island off the eastern coast of Africa a calm, lush pocket of paradise, and this month its wildlife population springs into action. Ring-tailed lemurs enter their breeding window; the proud parents and their goggle-eyed babies can best be spotted in Isalo National Park. Argentina October marks the arrival of spring in Argentine Patagonia. Trails have opened for the season in Los Glaciares National Park, offering ideal hiking conditions, while bird species like the strange-tailed tyrant can be observed with fresh feathers in the Ibera wetlands. Elsewhere in Patagonia, the region’s biggest gastronomical fair guarantees a heavenly week for food-lovers. New York City Whether it’s admiring Central Park’s golden leaves, sipping coffees or spending cozy afternoons indoors, New York City’s autumn is perfect for discovering the city in a new light. Now is the ideal time to benefit from lower prices and a flurry of unique events. Off-Broadway Week (5-18 October) offers two-for-one tickets to a host of shows and plays. Egypt Egypt’s peak desert heat has started to dissipate in October, making way for more comfortable exploration of the country’s representative archaeological sites in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. A brief transitional season also brings about slightly lower prices as well as fewer crowds. 21. Which destination is a favorable place for taking a hike? A. Madagascar. B. Argentina. C. New York City. D. Egypt. 22. What do New York City and Egypt have in common for travellers in October? A. They are famous for ancient adventures. B. Tourists can enjoy special theatre events. C. They are perfect for admiring golden leaves. D. Visitors can get the benefits of reduced prices. 23. Where is this passage probably taken from? A. A travel brochure. B. A science magazine. C. A local news website. D. A geography textbook. B I still remember the morning I set off for my first day back at university at the age of 42. With a rucksack on my back and a carefully packed lunch, I found myself wondering what my classmates would be like and whether I would stand out for all the wrong reasons. Beneath the nervous excitement was a deeper concern: the future I once felt confident about no longer seemed secure. Across the UK, this feeling is becoming increasingly common. More and more adults are returning to education, often at considerable financial cost, in search of work that feels stable, meaningful or simply sustainable. Changes in technology, combined with economic uncertainty, have made many traditional career paths less reliable than they once were. After two decades spent working towards senior status in the creative industries, it was frustrating to find myself applying for roles far below my experience and pay grade. Leadership jobs in media were difficult to find, and after five years freelancing (从事自由职业), I struggled to get back in. So I swallowed my pride and sent my CV out for retail and administration roles — the jobs I’d last done in my early twenties. Gradually, it became clear that short-term fixes were not enough. Rather than continuing to chase shrinking opportunities, I decided to retrain in psychotherapy. This choice was not an escape, but a turning point: a practical step towards a profession that values human connection and long-term purpose. Looking back, returning to university has reshaped how I see both work and success. Studying again has restored a sense of direction that is not determined only by the market. It has taught me that starting over does not mean failure, but adjustment. In a world where careers are increasingly fragile, learning may be one of the most reliable ways to move forward. 24. Why did the author decide to go back to university at 42? A. To escape from his family responsibilities. B. To meet new people and make more friends. C. To pursue a more stable and rewarding career. D. To improve his skills in the creative industries. 25. What can we know about the author from Paragraph 3? A. He refused to take low-paid jobs. B. He doubted his own working experience. C. He gained great success in freelance work. D. He failed to return to his previous industry. 26. Which of the following words can best describe the author? A. Ambitious and strict. B. Humorous and generous. C. Practical and adaptable. D. Cautious and conservative. 27. What does this passage mainly convey? A. Market changes lead to professional failure. B. It is never too late to learn and adjust oneself. C. Adult education is gaining popularity in the UK. D. Traditional career paths are disappearing gradually. C London buses have a cool secret. Viewed from above, they are often white, not red. This heat-reduction measure, which began in 2004 with the intention of making journeys more comfortable for passengers, was complete by 2020. But buses still struggle to cope with rising temperatures. One of the solutions may be to make them even whiter. A group at University College London (UCL), led by Ioannis Papakonstantinou, has painted the tops of two buses with material that reflects 93% of sunlight. Commercial white paint manages 84%. The difference might sound small, but it takes the new coating over a critical point: it emits more heat than it absorbs from the sun. Radiative coatings are coming to market. And not a moment too soon. Climate change makes space-cooling increasingly necessary. It accounted for 10% of the world’s electricity use in 2025, up from 6% in 1990. And, working by pumping heat out of buildings, air-conditioners help create urban “heat islands”. The secret of radiative cooling lies in materials that treat visible and infrared (红外线的) light differently. At any given wavelength, a substance can be a good emitter or a good reflector, but not both. Yet to cool below the temperature of its surroundings, an object must reflect energy from the sun while emitting its own pent-up heat. The group at UCL mixes particles of aerogel (气凝胶) into a polymer (聚合物). Differences between the light-bending abilities of the aerogel and the polymer, and the fact that the particles are about the same size as the wavelength of light, both cause incoming light rays to bounce off the aerogel particles, giving the paint its high reflectivity. Meanwhile, the aerogel and the polymer permit the paint to shed heat directly into outer space. The group’s work is not yet ready for mass production, but other radiative coatings are already on sale. i2Cool, a company in Hong Kong, includes particles made of a variety of materials in a range of sizes to do the reflecting. i2Cool says that it has covered 850,000 square metres of buildings with its coatings — an area equivalent to 119 football pitches — and thus avoided 14,000 tonnes of air-conditioning-related carbon-dioxide emissions. Which is, as it were, the coolest thing of all. 28. What can we learn about the UCL group’s new coating? A. It comes to the market too soon. B. It was first used on London buses in 2004. C. It makes buses absorb more heat than they emit. D. It reflects more sunlight than the commercial white paint. 29. How do radiative coatings cool an object according to the passage? A. By absorbing invisible and infrared light. B. By pumping heat out of the object with electricity. C. By reflecting sunlight while releasing the object’s own heat. D. By mixing aerogel with polymer to block all wavelengths. 30. What does the example of i2Cool indicate? A. UCL’s new coating has entered mass production. B. Radiative coatings are practical and eco-friendly. C. Cooling coatings will replace air-conditioners soon. D. Hong Kong leads the world in cooling technology. 31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Whiter Paint, Cooler Planet B. London Buses: A Cool Secret C. i2Cool: Coating the World in White D. How Air-Conditioners Heat Up Cities D Every three years the OECD releases the results of international school tests sat by 15-year-olds all across the world, which take a measure of young people’s learning ability as they approach the end of their compulsory education. The latest data, published on September 8th, suggest that scores in mathematics, reading and science have fallen further. In reading, the decline is actually speeding up. Zoom out, and the dominant story is of long-term decline. The average scores in the 23 OECD-member countries reached a peak around 2012 and have been falling ever since. What is causing this decline? The impact of technology on children’s learning — and on their reading skills in particular — has a role. Phones and widespread access to social media mean young people are getting less practice making sense of complex texts, argues Andreas Schleicher, head of education at the OECD. Screens are clearly distracting children from books: the number of nine-year-olds in America who say they read them for pleasure has fallen from nearly 60% in the 1990s to 37% now. Declining reading could well be dragging down marks in other subjects — because reading well is key to progressing in subjects such as maths and science, too. Tackling these challenges requires first-rate policies. What countries could serve as models? Britain’s march up the rankings deserves more attention than it has received. The nation made its curriculums more knowledge-rich. It made exams stricter, and toughened inspections. Politicians also sought to steer schools away from newfangled styles of instruction that are fashionable but untested, and back towards methods that are more dyed-in-the-wool. These policies have had some protective effect on school marks. Test scores are not the measure of a person, nor proof that they are destined for failure or success. But good grades are highly predictive of fatter earnings, better health and longer lives. At the national level, improvements in a country’s braininess track closely with later economic growth. It’s time for school-reformers to hit the books. 32. What can we learn about the OECD international school tests? A. The results of the tests are published every two years. B. They are held to test students finishing compulsory education. C. They show reading scores are dropping at a faster rate. D. The tests examine students’ ability to tackle real-life problems. 33. According to Andreas Schleicher, what is the cause of the decline? A. A lack of practice in grasping complicated texts. B. Weak foundation in mathematics and science. C. Increased difficulty of math, science and reading. D. Too much exposure to reading for pleasure in the school. 34. What does the underlined word dyed-in-the-wool in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Strict and unpopular. B. Fashionable but untested. C. Modern and newly-invented. D. Traditional and well-established. 35. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Test scores can fully decide a person’s future. B. Falling test scores call for urgent school reform. C. Technology alone explains the fall in students’ reading ability. D. Britain’s education reforms should be copied by all countries. What do you usually tell yourself when something goes wrong? If you make a mistake, do you immediately think, “I’m not good enough,” or can you step back and ask, “What can I learn from this?” ____36____. The way we interpret difficult experiences can greatly influence our feelings and future actions. Positive thinking is often misunderstood as pretending everything is fine. ____37____. It means looking at a difficult situation without automatically assuming the worst. Instead of thinking, “This always happens to me,” you might think, “This is difficult, but I can figure out what to do next.” This small shift can make challenges feel more manageable. ____38____. Once failure is expected, we tend to pay more attention to evidence that confirms our worries. A mistake becomes proof that we are incapable, while our progress is easily overlooked. A more balanced mindset helps us see both problems and chances. We admit mistakes, but we are less likely to let one bad experience define the whole situation. Positive thinking also adjusts our reaction to setbacks. People believing their abilities can be improved by effort are ready to restart after failures. They seek strategies and adjust methods for self-improvement. ____39____. Instead, it lies in trusting you can handle unsuccessful outcomes properly. This is why positive thinking is less about being cheerful all the time and more about developing a healthier relationship with uncertainty. You cannot control everything that happens to you, but you can influence the meaning you give to those experiences. Sometimes, a better thought does not change the situation immediately. ____40____. A. Our thoughts shape what we notice. B. It does not promise constant success. C. Our worries stop us from facing real-life failures. D. It is impossible for us to avoid difficulties in daily life. E. Yet its real meaning goes far beyond simple cheerfulness. F. Small differences in thinking can produce powerful results. G. It simply gives you enough space to respond instead of react. LEGO isn’t just for kids, and this 85-year-old grandma proves it. She has always insisted on handling daily errands on her own, refusing to become a burden for her children living far away. When a vacuum cleaner she had long desired went on sale at a national electronics chain, she firmly decided to drive herself to the nearest store to get one. Unfortunately, the popular model had completely sold out by the time she pulled into the store’s parking lot. A sales assistant told her that the product was still in stock at another branch in Melbourne. However, that store was a full-hour’s drive from where Mum stayed. Though still active in daily life, Mum’s physical condition could not support such a long tiring journey. She begged the staff to transfer the vacuum to the local outlet for her, only to receive a cold and firm refusal. Standing in the queue, she felt helpless and greatly disappointed by the indifferent service. Just then, a woman waiting right behind her stepped forward. She volunteered to make the long trip to the distant branch, pick up the vacuum cleaner and deliver it straight to Mum’s home. Mum sensed the woman’s genuine kindness and accepted the unexpected offer. She placed the order and gave the stranger her home address. The moment Mum rang me and told me what she had done, my heart sank instantly. Panic flooded my mind. A total stranger now knew my elderly mother’s home address! All sorts of frightening possibilities crowded into my head. I warned Mum of potential tricks and begged her to cancel this risky arrangement without delay. But Mum trusted the woman’s gentle manner and refused to listen to my persuasion. We even had a sharp quarrel over the phone. Trapped thousands of kilometres away from Melbourne, I could do nothing but wait restlessly, overwhelmed by heavy worry and lingering doubt. The next day, what happened was contrary to all my worst fears. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I hung up the phone, sinking back into my chair. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高三英语学科素养训练 考试时间:120分钟 满分:150分 注意事项: 1. What does the man plan to do after school? I’m David Chen from City Hearts, and I’m here to share how ordinary people are changing lives in our community. Three years ago, we started a simple program called Lunch Buddies. The idea came from Mrs. Patterson, a retired teacher who noticed children couldn’t get proper meals during school holidays. She began making sandwiches in her kitchen for twelve kids on her street. Today, Lunch Buddies serves over 800 meals every weekday across seventeen neighborhoods. But food is just the beginning. Our volunteers — mostly seniors and university students — don’t just drop off meals. They sit down, talk, and listen. Last month, a volunteer named Tom noticed a boy struggling with reading. Now, Tom visits him twice weekly, and the boy’s confidence has transformed. We receive no government funding. Every sandwich, every book, and every hour comes from donations and volunteers. Last year, 94% of families in our program reported improved relationships with their children. If you have two hours on Saturday morning, we need you. 21. B 22. D 23. C 25. D 26. C 27. 根据第二段“More and more adults are returning to education, often at considerable financial cost, in search of work that feels stable, meaningful or simply sustainable.(越来越多成年人重返校园,往往付出不菲经济代价,去寻找稳定、有意义或者可持续的工作)”以及第四段“Rather than continuing to chase shrinking opportunities, I decided to retrain in psychotherapy. This choice was not an escape, but a turning point: a practical step towards a profession that values human connection and long-term purpose.(我不再追逐不断缩减的机会,决定重新学习心理治疗。这个选择不是逃避,而是转折点:迈向一份重视人际联结、拥有长远价值职业的务实一步)”可知,作者42岁重返大学是为了追求更稳定、更有价值的职业。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Leadership jobs in media were difficult to find, and after five years freelancing (从事自由职业), I struggled to get back in.(媒体行业的管理岗位很难找,在做了五年自由职业之后,我很难重新回到这个行业)”可知,作者没能回到之前从事的行业。 根据第四段“Rather than continuing to chase shrinking opportunities, I decided to retrain in psychotherapy. This choice was not an escape, but a turning point: a practical step towards a profession that values human connection and long-term purpose.(我不再追逐不断缩减的机会,决定重新学习心理治疗。这个选择不是逃避,而是转折点:迈向一份重视人际联结、拥有长远价值的职业的务实一步)”以及第五段“It has taught me that starting over does not mean failure, but adjustment.(这件事教会我重新开始不代表失败,而是调整)”可知,作者务实且懂得变通适应。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第五段“It has taught me that starting over does not mean failure, but adjustment. In a world where careers are increasingly fragile, learning may be one of the most reliable ways to move forward.(这件事教会我重新开始不代表失败,而是调整。在职业越发不稳定的当下,学习或许是继续前行最可靠的方式之一)”可知,文章主要传达学习和自我调整永远为时不晚。 C London buses have a cool secret. How Air-Conditioners Heat Up Cities 【答案】28. D 29. C 30. B 31. 根据第二段“A group at University College London (UCL), led by Ioannis Papakonstantinou, has painted the tops of two buses with material that reflects 93% of sunlight. Commercial white paint manages 84%.(由伊奥尼斯·帕帕康斯坦丁努带领的伦敦大学学院(UCL)研究小组,将一种能反射93%太阳光的材料涂在了两辆公交车的车顶。市面上普通白漆仅能反射84%的阳光)”可知,这种新型涂层比商用白漆反射更多太阳光。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Yet to cool below the temperature of its surroundings, an object must reflect energy from the sun while emitting its own pent-up heat.(想要让物体温度低于周围环境,它必须反射来自太阳的能量,同时释放自身积聚的热量)”可知,辐射制冷涂层通过反射阳光并且释放物体自身热量来制冷。 根据第六段“i2Cool says that it has covered 850,000 square metres of buildings with its coatings — an area equivalent to 119 football pitches — and thus avoided 14,000 tonnes of air-conditioning-related carbon-dioxide emissions.(i2Cool公司称已经在85万平方米建筑上使用该涂层,相当于119个足球场,减少了14000吨空调相关的二氧化碳排放)”可知,这个例子说明辐射涂层实用且环保。 根据第二段“A group at University College London (UCL), led by Ioannis Papakonstantinou, has painted the tops of two buses with material that reflects 93% of sunlight. Commercial white paint manages 84%. 【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. B 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讲述经济合作与发展组织国际学生测评显示多国学生学业成绩长期下滑,分析了科技与社交媒体减少学生阅读练习的下滑原因,以英国教育改革为参考范例,呼吁推进学校教育改革。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The latest data, published on September 8th, suggest that scores in mathematics, reading and science have fallen further. In reading, the decline is actually speeding up.(9月8日公布的最新数据显示,数学、阅读和科学学科的成绩进一步下滑。其中阅读学科的下滑速度实际上正在加快。)”可知,该国际测评结果显示阅读成绩正以更快的速率下降。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Phones and widespread access to social media mean young people are getting less practice making sense of complex texts, argues Andreas Schleicher, head of education at the OECD.(经济合作与发展组织教育部门负责人Andreas Schleicher认为,手机与社交媒体的普及意味着年轻人在理解复杂文本方面得到的练习越来越少。)” 可知,Andreas Schleicher认为成绩下滑的原因是学生在理解复杂文本方面的练习有所欠缺。 【34题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段画线词“dyed-in-the-wool”前面的“Politicians also sought to steer schools away from newfangled styles of instruction that are fashionable but untested, and back towards methods(政客们还试图引导学校摒弃那些新潮、流行但未经检验的教学模式,回归传统教学方法)”可知,句中前后构成反义对比,画线词与前文中的newfangled含义相反。 What do you usually tell yourself when something goes wrong? 【答案】36. F 37. E 38. A 39. B 40. G 【解析】 【导语】文章说明了面对失误与挫折,不同的思维方式会影响人的情绪与行动。积极思维并非意味着时刻假装乐观,而是客观看待困境,拥有平衡心态。它不能改变所有客观现实,但可以改变我们对经历的解读,帮助我们理性应对不确定性。 【36题详解】 根据上文“What do you usually tell yourself when something goes wrong? If you make a mistake, do you immediately think, “I’m not good enough,” or can you step back and ask, “What can I learn from this?”(当事情出岔子时,你通常会对自己说些什么?如果你犯了错,你会不会立刻心想:“我不够好”,还是能够冷静下来问问自己:“我能从这件事中学到什么?”)”以及后文“The way we interpret difficult experiences can greatly influence our feelings and future actions.(我们如何解读艰难的经历,会极大影响我们的情绪以及后续的行动)”可知,空前提到出错时两种不同的自我对话方式,空后说明解读困境的方式会极大影响情绪和后续行动,F项“思维的微小差异会产生巨大的影响”承上启下,符合语境。 【37题详解】 根据上文“Positive thinking is often misunderstood as pretending everything is fine.(积极思考常常被误解成假装一切安好)”以及后文“It means looking at a difficult situation without automatically assuming the worst. Instead of thinking, “This always happens to me,” you might think, “This is difficult, but I can figure out what to do next.” This small shift can make challenges feel more manageable.(它指的是面对困境时,不会下意识往最坏的方面想。不要想着“这种事总发生在我身上”,你可以换个思路:“这确实很难,但我能想好下一步该怎么做。”这样小小的转变,会让难题变得更容易应对)”可知,空前提到积极思考常被误解为假装一切都好,空后解释它的真正内涵是不预设最坏结果、理性看待困境,E项“然而它的真正意义远不止简单的乐观愉悦”衔接前后,纠正误解引出正确定义。 【38题详解】 根据后文“Once failure is expected, we tend to pay more attention to evidence that confirms our worries. A mistake becomes proof that we are incapable, while our progress is easily overlooked. A more balanced mindset helps us see both problems and chances. We admit mistakes, but we are less likely to let one bad experience define the whole situation.(一旦预想自己会失败,我们往往会更加留意那些印证担忧的线索。 【40题详解】 根据上文“This is why positive thinking is less about being cheerful all the time and more about developing a healthier relationship with uncertainty. You cannot control everything that happens to you, but you can influence the meaning you give to those experiences. Sometimes, a better thought does not change the situation immediately.(这就是为什么积极思考,不在于时刻保持开心,而在于和未知建立一种更健康的相处模式。 LEGO isn’t just for kids, and this 85-year-old grandma proves it. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next day, what happened was contrary to all my worst fears. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I hung up the phone, sinking back into my chair. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: The next day, what happened was contrary to all my worst fears. Restlessly suffering from my worry, I stared at my cellphone, dreading bad news about Mum. To my immense relief, Mum called me in high spirits in the late afternoon. The stranger had shown up at the given home address right on schedule. Not only did she bring the vacuum, but she patiently assembled it for the elderly mum. Hearing Mum’s joyful voice, I felt ashamed of our bitter quarrel. My panic faded away, yet a faint doubt still lingered deep in my mind. I hung up the phone, sinking back into my chair. Staring blankly out of the window, I replayed the whole incident in my mind. All my previous terrible assumptions about the stranger flashed across my thoughts. Gradually, my stubborn doubt melted into shame. How could I judge a warm-hearted person merely out of fear? I dialed Mum’s number once more, making a sincere apology for our fierce quarrel. It dawned on me that true kindness shines brightly even between total strangers. 3.词汇激活: 行为类 ①凝视:stare at/gaze ②组装:assemble/construct 情绪类 ①快乐的:joyful/cheerful ②愧疚的:ashamed/guilty 【点睛】[高分句型1] Not only did she bring the vacuum, but she patiently assembled it for the elderly mum.(运用了部分倒装) [高分句型2] I dialed Mum’s number once more, making a sincere apology for our fierce quarrel.(运用了现在分词作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
