Katie Slocum was flipping through a novel she had picked up at a little free library years earlier but never bothered to open. Tucked inside was a 23-year-old letter.
Dated Aug. 23, 2003, it was addressed to “My Dearest Jackie” by an unnamed grandmother, who described the girl as someone who “sparkled like a rare vintage champagne” while giving so much of herself to her friends and family, and would meet whatever life handed her “with both hands and keep on dancing.”
Slocum, a Washington, D.C. resident, sensed at once that the letter mattered. Though she had no surname, no return address and no other clues to work with, she resolved to track down its owner. She pictured how much she herself would have treasured such a letter — and how grateful she would be if a stranger went out of their way to return it. So she posted her quest on local social media forums, and Dan Silverman, who runs a neighborhood blog, added a callout for Jackie.
The following day, Jacqueline Roche was scrolling through the blog’s Instagram feed when a headline about a lost letter caused her to pause. She glanced at the cursive (草书) in the photo of the letter, then saw to whom it was addressed.
“I knew right away that was my letter,” she said. “I was so shocked.”
Much of her surprise stemmed from never having realized until that very moment the letter that had brought her so much comfort over the years had disappeared.
Roche had been given the letter by her grandmother on her 16th birthday and had turned to it repeatedly during lonely or difficult stretches of her life. She moved out of the D.C. neighborhood in 2022 and, apparently, donated the novel without realizing the letter was inside. She never knew it was missing until she saw the PoPville post.
Silverman put the two women in touch. When they met in a town square the next weekend, Roche hugged Slocum before they had exchanged more than a few words. They talked for about 20 minutes, yet Roche later said she “kind of felt like we were already friends.” The recovered letter has since become a favorite topic at her grandmother’s senior community, and the two women now speak far more often than before.
24. What does the author suggest by mentioning “no surname, no return address and no other clues”?
A. Slocum had little chance of finding Jackie.
B. Slocum was unsure whether the letter was real.
C. The letter had been damaged and was hard to read.
D. The grandmother had deliberately hidden her identity.
25. What can be inferred about Roche’s reaction when she came across the photo?
A. She felt a sense of relief that the letter had finally been recovered.
B. She had no doubt from the first glance that the letter belonged to her.
C. She was puzzled about how the letter had ended up being posted online.
D. She was amazed that the letter had managed to survive for over twenty years.
26. Why had Roche not realized the letter was missing?
A. She had moved away and lost track of her belongings.
B. She had given away the novel without checking inside.
C. She had lent the novel to a friend who never returned it.
D. She had stopped reading the letter as she grew older and busier.
27. What is the main message of the text?
A. Handwritten letters mean more than digital messages.
B. Online communities can achieve what individuals cannot.
C. A kind act may lead to something neither person expected.
D. Long-lost belongings frequently find their way back to their rightful owners.
A 25. B 26. B 27. C
根据第三段“Though she had no surname, no return address and no other clues to work with, she resolved to track down its owner.(虽然她不知道姓氏、没有回信地址,也没有其他可以利用的线索,但她下定决心找到信件的主人)”可知,缺少线索意味着Slocum找到Jackie的可能性很小。
根据第四段“She glanced at the cursive (草书) in the photo of the letter, then saw to whom it was addressed.(她瞥了一眼信照片中的草书,然后看了看信是写给谁的)”和第五段““I knew right away that was my letter,” she said.(“我立刻知道那是我的信,”她说)”可知,Roche第一眼就确定这封信是属于她的。
根据第七段“She moved out of the D.C. neighborhood in 2022 and, apparently, donated the novel without realizing the letter was inside.(她2022年搬离华盛顿社区,显然是捐赠这本书的时候没有留意里面夹着信件)”可知,她捐赠这本书时没有检查书里面的东西,所以一直没有发现信件不见了。

The internet of old was like an active market. It was noisy, chaotic, and dynamic. Every click brought you somewhere new, sometimes unpredictable, letting you uncover the joy in exchanging information and thoughts. The internet of today, however, speaks in comforting statements and offers a smooth experience with constant praise.
This has robbed us of something in our nature: the pleasure of exploring and questioning. We’ve willingly become creatures of instant satisfaction. Why wait? Why struggle? The change may seem innocent, but it’s also transforming our relationship with the mental effort required to explore uncertainties. By delegating such effort, do we still own the capabilities that help us navigate the unknown or even think for ourselves? It is becoming clear that even if the current risk posed by AI doesn’t bring about the collapse of civilization, it will still bring about the quiet yet disastrous decline of what makes us human.
Part of that decline is caused by choice. And the most powerful way to shape someone’s choices is by gaining their trust. Every model is a memory, trained not just on data that help anticipate what we want, but also how to answer in ways that comfort us and confirm us, and in doing so, they manage to maximize engagement and avoid debate. Designed to please us, chatbots don’t simply answer our questions; they shape how we interact with them and determine what gets shown, what gets smoothed out, and what gets silenced.
The early internet was never perfect, but it had a purpose: to connect us, to redistribute power, to widen access to knowledge. Today’s systems are the opposite: Prediction has replaced participation, and certainty has replaced search. But the door to a better future hasn’t shut yet. We can still choose systems that serve rather than control, that offer possibilities instead of mere efficiency. Our humanity and future depend on it.
28. What has the internet lost in its development according to paragraph 1?
A. Instant feedback. B. Enormous information.
C. Various viewpoints. D. Friendly atmosphere.
29. What does the underlined word “delegating” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Drawing on. B. Keeping up. C. Taking over. D. Handing off.
30. How do chatbots gain our trust?
A. By presenting opposing ideas. B. By solving potential problems.
C. By memorizing previous choices. D. By providing agreeable responses.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Rise of AI Answering Models B. The Price of a Smooth Cyberworld
C. The Convenience of the Digital Era D. The Decline of Human Interactions
C 29. D 30. D 31. B
根据第一段“The internet of old was like an active market. It was noisy, chaotic, and dynamic. Every click brought you somewhere new, sometimes unpredictable, letting you uncover the joy in exchanging information and thoughts. The internet of today, however, speaks in comforting statements and offers a smooth experience with constant praise. (过去的互联网像一个热闹的集市,嘈杂、混乱却充满活力,每一次点击都能带你去到新的、有时不可预知的地方,让你体会到交流信息与思想的乐趣。然而如今的互联网只会说出让人舒服的话,提供一种顺滑体验,并不断给予赞美。)”提到早年互联网充满思想交流,而现在的互联网只提供让人舒适的内容,缺少多样的思想碰撞,由此可知互联网在发展中失去了多元的观点。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“This has robbed us of something in our nature: the pleasure of exploring and questioning.
根据第三段中“And the most powerful way to shape someone’s choices is by gaining their trust. Every model is a memory, trained not just on data that help anticipate what we want, but also how to answer in ways that comfort us and confirm us, and in doing so, they manage to maximize engagement and avoid debate. (而塑造一个人的选择最有力的方式就是获取他的信任。每一个模型都是一段记忆,它不仅基于帮助预测我们想要什么的数据进行训练,还学习如何以让我们感到安慰和认同的方式来回答问题,通过这种方式,它们最大化了用户参与度并避免了争论。)”可知,聊天机器人依靠给出迎合、认同我们的回答,以此获得我们的信任。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段中“The early internet was never perfect, but it had a purpose: to connect us, to redistribute power, to widen access to knowledge. Today’s systems are the opposite: Prediction has replaced participation, and certainty has replaced search.

More than 100,000 people in the United States are currently waiting for organ transplants, and many face long delays or rejection even when a suitable donor is found. One promising alternative is regenerative medicine, which aims to grow personalized organs using a patient’s own cells. Ensuring that oxygen and nutrients can reach every part of a newly grown organ is an ongoing challenge. Researchers at Stanford have created new tools to design and 3D print the incredibly complex vascular (血管的) trees needed to carry blood throughout an organ.
The researchers built an algorithm (算法) to create vascular trees similar to native organ blood vessel structures. They ensured that the vasculature would evenly distribute blood and successfully shorten the time needed to generate the network. While 3D printers aren’t yet up to the task of printing such a fine-scale network, the researchers were able to design and print a vascular model with 500 branches. Using a 3D bio-printer, the researchers created a thick ring loaded with human cells and built a network of 25 vessels running through it.
The researchers are quick to note that these vascular networks are not yet functional blood vessels — they don’t have muscle cells or anything else that they would need to work on their own. “This is the first step toward generating really complex vascular networks,” said Dominic Rütsche, one of the researchers. “We can print them at never-before-seen complexities, but they are not yet fully functional vessels. We’re working on that.”
Turning these designs into functioning blood vessels is just one of the many tasks that the researchers are working on. “This is a critical step in the process,” Dominic said. “We have successfully generated enough heart cells from human stem cells to print the whole human heart, and now we can design a good, complex vascular tree to keep them fed and living. We are now actively putting the two together: cells and vasculature, at organ scale.”
32. What does Stanford’s research mainly focus on?
A. Increasing available donor organs.
B. Removing deadly organ rejections.
C. Designing workable vascular networks.
D. Developing personalized 3D bio-printers.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning the research?
A. Its principles. B. Its achievements. C. Its objectives. D. Its process.
34. How does Dominic describe the research?
A. Practical but costly. B. Worthwhile but risky.
C. Fruitful but questionable. D. Promising but immature.
35. What will the researchers do next?
A. Employ stem cells to print whole organs.
B. Integrate cells and vessels on a larger scale.
C. Generate more cells for further experiments.
D. Produce vascular trees to sustain heart cells.
C 33. B 34. D 35. B

Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Tom,
How is everything going? I’m writing to discuss our plan for this year’s Science Festival in November.
Here’s my idea. We could organize three main activities: a student innovation exhibition, a robotics competition, and a guest lecture by a scientist. The exhibition allows students to showcase their own hand-made projects, the competition encourages teamwork and problem-solving, and the lecture can inspire those who are curious about science. I believe this mix of hands-on activities and expert insight will appeal to a wide range of students.
Would you like to add anything, perhaps something from your own school experience? I’m also wondering whether you could help invite an English-speaking scientist to give the lecture online.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

The Warmth in the Heavy Snow
Last Saturday, a record-breaking snowstorm swept across New York City without warning. The wind roared like a wounded beast, its icy breath tearing through the streets and shaking every window. Snowflakes poured down from the gray sky, covering the tall buildings and making them hard to see clearly. People could almost see nothing. The city that never sleeps fell into an icy silence — every street, road and rooftop all buried under thick snow, which looked bright in the weak light.
I woke up with an empty stomach, only to find the fridge was completely empty too: no milk for coffee, no bread for toast, not an even single egg left. When I checked the cupboard, there was nothing left inside. I knew I had to go shopping at once, or I’d be stuck without basic supplies for the rest of the storm. But when I tried to open the front door, it wouldn’t move even an inch. Heavy snow had gathered up tightly against the door all night, forming a hard wall that locked me inside. I pushed and pulled many times. My shoulders ached and I was out of breath. But all my efforts were in vain. The snow held firm, blocking me from the outside world.
Staring out of the window helplessly, I watched the snow flying wildly in the terribly cold wind. Travel bans (出行禁令) had shut down almost all traffic across the city, and there was no sign of people on the street. A wave of fear and anxiety swept over me, cold and sharp as the wind outside. My parents were working far away in another state, and the phone lines had gone dead hours ago, so I had no way to reach anyone for help. Just as I sat on the floor hopeless and alone, a weak but clear knock on the door broke the terrible silence.

“Hello? Is anybody in?” It was Mrs. Wilson, my next-door neighbor. I yelled at the top of my voice to tell her that I was trapped inside. Hearing my cry for help, she comforted me and told me to stay calm. Then she promised to ask more neighbors for help at once. It was only a few minutes, but it felt like centuries. Finally, several kind neighbors rushed over with shovels, brooms and brushes. Despite the biting cold, they worked together to clear the snow beside my door bit by bit.
After twenty minutes of hard work, the door was finally opened. I stepped out with tears of gratitude rolling down my cheeks. Their faces were red with cold, but gentle smiles were on their lips. Mrs. Wilson handed me a cup of steaming tea, warming my hand and heart instantly. Some neighbors also offered to clean my yard and share some food with me. On that freezing snowy day in New York, I truly felt the warmth of the neighborhood. The heavy snow could freeze the whole city, but it could never freeze the kindness between people, reminding me that love and care are always around us.

C
D
