Australian kids made history by sending green algae (藻类) to the International Space Station (ISS). They hoped to create a greener future on Earth.
On November 5, 2024, students from Casula High School cheered loudly as a SpaceX spaceship successfully lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It left the ground and flew into the sky. It was carrying two boxes of algae.
The experiment was sent to space for a 30-day task. The students wanted to test if algae could grow faster in space. If their idea proved correct, space-grown algae could be used for food, medicine, and biofuels (生物燃料) during space travel and for improving environments on Earth and Mars.
The algae experiment was a chance for students to work with top technology. Lexie Rouen, a teacher from Casula High School, said students were excited to work on real-world experiments that could actually help their future. “The experiment was much more than a normal classroom project,” she added.
Over three years, students from Casula High School have met experts like Australia’s first woman astronaut and NASA scientists. They also used high-tech space tools. They worked together on the algae experiment. They did practice tests on Earth to find the best conditions for algae growth before the spaceship was sent.
“We used to say the sky is the limit (极限) for our talented high school students. But they are showing there is no limit to their abilities,” John Graham, a government worker, said. “Those students are on their way to a big future.”
26. Why did the students choose algae for their experiment?
A. To feed astronauts in space. B. To study the ISS environment.
C. To help build a greener future. D. To make space travel more comfortable.
27. What does the underlined phrase “lifted off” in Para. 2 mean?
A. Went up. B. Came back.
C. Slowed down. D. Broke down.
28. What is Para. 3 mainly about?
A. The time of the space task. B. The size of the algae boxes.
C. The use of space-grown algae. D. The growth speed of algae in space.
29. What can we infer from Para. 5 about the students?
A. They had little interest in space. B. They met the astronaut only once.
C. They finished the task in three years. D. They prepared for the task carefully.
30. What can we learn from John Graham’s words?
A. He dreamed of traveling in space. B. He thought highly of the students.
C. He expressed thanks to the students. D. He was very proud of his own work.

Share Your Story: Protect Puppet Art with Pocket Money Oct 12th, 2026 | Li Siyu
Many teenagers receive pocket money every month, yet quite a few of them spend it all in a short time. Some teenagers, however, make good use of their money and take social responsibility at the same time. Lin Xiao is one of those thoughtful teenagers.
Lin Xiao is a Grade 9 student. Inspired by Zhan Haojing’s story of protecting Minnan puppet art, she fell deeply in love with this traditional local art. After watching several wonderful puppet performances, she noticed that many old puppet artists had trouble getting enough money for their shows. Few young people knew about this amazing art form.
Lin Xiao came up with a practical plan. Every month, she saves part of her pocket money instead of buying snacks or blind boxes. She donates her savings to support local puppet shows. Besides saving money, she also shares short videos about puppet performances online. She hopes more teenagers will get to know this treasure of local culture.
Her small actions slowly make a real difference. More teenagers have watched her online videos and become interested in puppet art. Some of them even start to save their own pocket money and join her small support group. When interviewed, Lin Xiao said, “We teenagers don’t have much money, but we can still shoulder our responsibility. If more young people care about traditional arts, these old arts will stay alive for many more years.”
