Isaac Newton was a quiet boy. Having lost his father before he was born, he grew up with his grandmother. At 18, soon after he finished schooling, Newton would spend his time making small tools. His head teacher saw the genius in him and asked his mother to send him to the university. Newton set out for Cambridge in June, 1661.
Newton was always trying to understand and explain a lot of things in nature. To test a question about colours, he would stare at (凝视) the sun with one eye until all the colours changed. As a result, he had to stay in the dark for some time before his eye returned to normal. Newton was the first to show us that white light is made up of colours mixed together. He was also the first person to understand the rainbow and explain how it forms.
A story goes like this: One day, an apple fell on Newton’s head, and it was then that Newton realized that the apple fell towards Earth and didn’t go anywhere else. He thought to himself, “How did this happen?” After doing some experiments, he later knew all objects always fall towards Earth’s centre because Earth attracts them. He realized that every object in the universe attracts every other object towards it. Then Newton discovered the law of universal gravitation.
Newton was an English physicist, mathematician and astronomer. Because of the significant work Newton has done, he is widely considered as one of the greatest scientists of all time.

People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school-year English course at Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say it in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got over it. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no option but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.
8.How long did the writer learn English at Wuhan University?
A.About three months. B.About a year.
C.About a term. D.About two years.
9.What is a good way to improve your English according to the writer?
A.Thinking in English. B.Learning English grammar.
C.Watching English films. D.Reading English books.
10.What does the underlined word “option” mean?
A.Idea. B.Decision. C.Choice. D.Chance.
11.Which can be the best title (标题) for the text?
A.The Importance of English
B.My Experience in Learning English
C.My English Grades in University
D.The Secrets of Memorizing English Words

One pleasant evening, I was holding Grandpa’s hand and taking a walk in the park. “Where are the peanuts? Give me now!”
He suddenly said. How I wished I had some with me! “William, the monkeys are taking long to come out today. Wait till they smell the peanut.”
I knew he was lost in one of his memories again. I remembered the stories he told me of how he fed the monkeys when he was a kid. Then, he saw the goldfish! He acted as if he was seeing them for the first time.
Poor Grandpa! He fell ill with Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症) last year. The doctor said it was a progressive brain disorder which could destroy a person’s memory. The patient might also not be able to make reasonable judgments (判断). The sad part was that it was a lifelong disease. But when my parents invited him to stay with us, he refused and said he liked living alone. One day, he forgot to turn off the fire after cooking porridge. Luckily, one of the neighbours came to help him before the fire could spread.
It was then that my parents brought Grandpa to live with us. We tried our best to spend as much time as possible with him, including talking about things happening around him, doing some body exercises and looking through our family photos. Often, he would forget my name and ask me who I was and what I was doing in his house. Each time I would answer softly, “It’s me, Ray, Grandpa!” Even if he had forgotten who I was, he would always be my beloved grandfather.
12.What did Grandpa want to do in the park?
A.Eat peanuts. B.Smell flowers. C.Feed monkeys. D.Tell stories.
13.What would happen to Grandpa according to the doctor?
A.He had to live by himself. B.His memory could get better.

14.Why did the writer’s parents bring Grandpa to live with them?
A.To make sure of his safety. B.To answer his questions in time.
C.To get his help with the housework. D.To help him remember their names.
15.Which of the following words best describes the writer?
A.Smart. B.Caring. C.Honest. D.Brave.
