Text One
W: Lily, you lived in this city ten years ago, right?
M: Yes, Mum. The biggest change is the new subway line. It used to take me forty minutes to get to school by bus, and now it takes twelve.
W: That is really fast. Have you ever been to the new park?
M: Not yet. It opened last month.
Question: What has brought the biggest change to Lily's city?
Text Two
W: How do you improve your spoken English, Tom?
M: I read the text aloud every morning for ten minutes. At first it felt strange, but now my mouth is much faster.
W: Do you like watching English films?
M: Sometimes, but I never write down the new words, so I forget them soon.
Question: How does Tom improve his spoken English?
Text Three
M: Who is the woman in the photo on your desk?
W: She is Miss Chen, my aunt. She taught English in a mountain village for eighteen years. The children there walked two hours to school, but she never left them.
M: That is admirable. Is she still working?
W: She retired last year, but she still reads letters from her students.
Question: Who is the woman talking about?
Text Four
W: Excuse me, how long can I keep this book if I borrow it today?
M: Two weeks. But you can renew it once online, if nobody has asked for it.
W: That is very helpful. Thank you.
M: You are welcome. Please bring it back on time.
Question: How long can the woman keep the book?
Text Five
W: Shall we meet at the school gate at nine?
M: The library opens at nine, and there is a long queue at that time. Let's meet at a quarter to ten.
W: Good idea. Then we have time to find the book we need.
Question: When will the two students meet at the gate?
Text Six
M: Hi, Nora, you look worried. What is the matter?
W: I keep forgetting new English words. I read them tonight, and by the next morning they are gone.
M: How long do you study each evening?
W: Almost three hours, without any break.
M: That is too long for the brain. Try short breaks. Put the new words on flashcards, and review them again after five minutes, then after half an hour.
W: Really? I have never tried that way.
M: Many students find it works much better than reading the whole list again.
Question: What problem does Nora have? What does Leo suggest?
Text Seven
W: Grandpa, do you still have that old letter? The one you wrote to me when I started school.
M: That letter? I have not seen it for years. It was in the box with my school things.
W: The address on the envelope is half torn away. If we find the letter, we can still read the last line.
M: Then let's look through the old boxes this afternoon. I know every one of them.
W: You always say that, and then we find nothing.
M: This time we will put everything on the table, and check each box carefully. I am sure we will find it.
Question: What does the woman want to find? Who wrote the letter? What will the two of them do first?
Text Eight
M: Good morning, everyone. My name is Li Wen, and I work for a company that builds bridges. I would like to talk about an engineer I once worked with.
M: When I was new to the job, I asked her once why she kept coming back to the same mountain village for years. She answered, "Because the road was here before I was, and it will be here after I am gone." She said the plainest words, but I have never forgotten them.
M: She grew up in a village that had no road at all. In the past, a sandstorm could cover the fields with sand in a single afternoon, and the soil was so sandy that nothing grew well. Villagers walked to the nearest town for hours just to buy a bag of corn.
M: Then the government supported a project. Workers built a high-tech greenhouse at the foot of the hill, and they planted rows of bushes to hold the sand in place. Today the same farmers grow fresh vegetables there, and a lorry carries them to the port every morning. The railway that was completed last year has made the whole thing easier still.
M: People sometimes ask me whether one engineer can change a village. I always say no. A project like this needs the government, the company, the farmers and time. But I will say this: without people who keep coming back, nothing here would have grown at all.
Question: What is the speaker's job? Why did the engineer keep coming back to the village? What problems did the village have in the past? What did the government and the workers do? What does the speaker want to say?

B The Winter Guests ① Every November my little sister asks the same question: "When will the cranes come back?" Silver Lake lies two kilometres from our town, and for as long as anyone can remember, white cranes have spent the winter on its shallow water. My grandfather, Chen Shan, has watched them for forty years. "Cranes remember places," he likes to say. "They recognize this lake the way you recognize your own home." ② Grandfather keeps his records in a blue book, and he has never missed a winter. Every year he writes down the day the first bird arrives, the number of birds he counts, and the weather of that week. The numbers in his book tell one long story about our town. ③ About ten years ago the birds stopped coming. The town was growing fast, and new factories by the lake poured their dirty water straight into it. Fish died, the reeds turned grey, and the cranes flew past our lake without stopping. In two winters the number of birds in the blue book fell from more than three hundred to zero. ④ Grandfather did not shout about it. He took his blue book to the town government and showed them forty years of numbers. "Birds cannot speak for themselves," he said. "This book can." The town closed the factories, cleaned the water and planted new reeds. For three winters no crane came back, and every week Grandfather still walked to the lake and wrote down one small word: none. ⑤ Then one November morning my sister ran into the kitchen. "They are back!" she cried. Eleven white cranes stood in the shallow water, and Grandfather watched them until it was dark. The next winter there were thirty. Last winter there were more than two hundred. ⑥ People in town call my grandfather the "crane man", and a reporter came to take his photo last spring. He says the birds taught him one thing: "Nature keeps its own records. If you are patient and keep your promise to it, it will come back to you." My sister is nine now, and she has started a blue book of her own. 20.Why did the cranes stop coming to Silver Lake? A.The lake froze over every winter. B.Factories by the lake polluted the water. C.Too many visitors frightened them away. D.The town planted new reeds by the lake. 21.What did Grandfather do when the birds stopped coming? A.He stopped going to the lake. B.He moved to another town. C.He showed the government his records of forty years. D.He wrote to a newspaper for help. 22.Which of the following best shows Grandfather’s belief? A.Birds can never live near a town. B.Records are useless without photos. C.Nature comes back if people keep their promise to it. D.Only scientists can help wild animals. 23.Which is the best title for the passage? A.The Factories by the Lake B.The Blue Book C.My Little Sister D.The Winter Guests C Why We Sometimes Mix Up Faces ① You walk into a room and see a man with a grey beard. You are sure you know him. Ten minutes later you find out that he is a stranger, and the friend you meant is standing behind you. It happens to everybody, and it happens more often than we like to admit. ② The problem starts with the brain. Memory does not keep a copy of the world. It keeps a link, and the link grows out of what you already know. A name, a face, a place: each one holds a thread, and the thread is what you can pull later when you need the whole picture again. That is why a name is much harder to remember on a noisy street than in a quiet room. When many things arrive at the same time, the brain has to decide which one goes where, and it often puts them in the wrong place. A lecture given in a busy hall can run out of the mind within a day. Half an hour of honest attention is worth more than a whole afternoon of notes. ③ A second reason is speed. Our eyes can only look at one face for about a tenth of a second before moving on. The brain then has to make a quick guess, and a quick guess is often wrong. Stress makes it worse. A tired student may keep in mind much less after three hours of study in one evening, while one hour of study followed by a good night does far better. A retail shop manager told me that the same thing happens at work: the right name at the right position works, and the right name at the wrong position makes a mess of the whole order. ④ Yet the good news is that you can train a stable memory. In one memory contest, thirty volunteers had to learn the same set of thirty Chinese words. The list included the words for an opera, a picnic, a gunshot and a dolphin, four words that no one had ever needed outside a storybook. The words were ordinary ones, but each of them sat inside a short story. Half of the volunteers read the stories for two long hours and took a test that evening. The other half spent only one hour on them, went home, slept for eight hours, and took their test the next morning. That half brought back nearly double the words, and they could also say what the words actually meant. Rest, not longer hours, made the difference. ⑤ Night is not the time you lose. While your body rests, the brain quietly takes up the new material again and again, and files what is worth keeping into long-term memory. The same hours also let the body mend a cut and keep the blood in good shape, so a rested mind and a healthy body are never separate things. Learn hard in the daylight, then give the night eight steady hours, and the plan you keep every week will carry you much further than one sleepless night before an exam. ⑥ The researchers also found something about anxiety. Before an exam, the body reacts as if it were in danger, and that reaction can use up the energy the brain needs for memory. One final piece of advice is simple, and it costs nothing: put the desk in a quiet corner, and put your time to good use. Any quiet corner will do, as long as you put the hours to good use in it. A grown-up student, having learned to go through a hard week, can then divide it into small parts, and the sadness of the last exam does not run out of the mind. If you happen to lose a page, go through it once more; the outline is still there. 24.What does the writer say about memory in Paragraph 2? A.It builds links from what we already know. B.It keeps a copy of everything we see. C.It works best on a noisy street. D.It never puts two faces in the wrong place. 25.According to Paragraph 3, what makes us mix up faces? A.Our eyes look at a face for too long. B.A quiet room always gives the wrong answer. C.The brain must guess quickly, and stress makes it worse. D.Tired students usually guess correctly. 26.What did the second group of students do in the study? A.They studied for two hours and took a test that evening. B.They memorized thirty words instead of twenty. C.They studied the list twice in the same evening. D.They studied for one hour, slept for eight hours, and took a test the next morning. 27.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.Sleep helps the body repair a wound. B.A tired student always remembers more than a rested one. C.Anxiety has no effect on the brain. D.The best desk is always the one near a window. D Three Things That Do Not Work for Everyone ① Ask any teacher for the best way to learn English and you will hear the same short answer again and again. Read more. Write more. Work harder. Behind every one of these sentences sits a real method, a real strategy that some learner somewhere found useful. In our own school, a young teacher named Terry has opened a little club for hands-on work, and every member keeps a small box of flashcards, one word on each side, and a pencil, used for one thing only, to tick the boxes of the words they have learned; the boxes suggest the next step, and the club has opened its doors to the whole school. His e-book of grammar notes is now the most popular thing in the reading corner. His hands-on experience of two years is in every line of it, and last year more than a hundred of his students took the school's English speech contest in this city. There is nothing wrong with this advice, and there is also very little new in it. Ask three students how they learn best and you will get three different answers, because a method working beautifully for one learner can fail completely for another. ② The first thing that does not work for everyone is the group. A class of students, all studying together, explaining new words to each other and testing one another, is a wonderful tool for some students, and a slow machine for others. One girl needs to think alone before she speaks, so group work is hard for her. Another boy learns best by reading, and four voices at once break the line of a text for him. In the same way, a recent newspaper may open a new world for one reader and close the door for another. One learner will look up every new word and enjoy the hunt; another will want to speak the new words with a classmate; a third will want a podcast to talk him through it, and a fourth will only learn from a dialogue he can act out with a friend. ③ The second is the plan on the wall. Posters and learning charts look serious and they fill the wall nicely. Yet a plan that fills half a page is often just a wish. The students who keep a plan for a whole term are usually the ones who cut it down to one line a day, and the students who copy a beautiful plan out of a book are usually the ones who give it up in the third week. A plan needs guidance, not decoration. Whether you work with a magazine, an e-book or a page of your own, the material only becomes yours when you put it in your own words. In addition, the enjoyable part is often the part nobody marks: a game, a picture, a short talk with a classmate. ④ The third is the speed. Everything now arrives fast: a video of five minutes, an answer on the screen, a summary of a whole book in ten lines. This is convenient, and it is also dangerous, because a fast answer feels exactly like a learned one. Clicking through a summary for an hour leaves you with nothing. Take a whole morning with one page instead, and keep that page in the notebook, and the page is yours. Step by step, these small acts build up a real growth in learning, and no general plan can arrange them for you. Summarize the week in three lines, and you will see your own growth more clearly than any chart can show it. A pronunciation problem that you write down becomes a smaller problem, and an open question in your head becomes a question you can actually ask. No valley of doubt is deep enough to stop a learner who uses the material well and works efficiently. ⑤ None of this means that the old advice is wrong. It means that the advice should end with a question, not a rule. Which part of the group work suits me? How small can my plan be? Do I need to slow down? A good learner keeps asking these questions. The strategy that suits her today may be wrong for her next year. In part, this is a mindset, not a method, and a mindset is what turns a method into a habit. That is the real skill, and no poster can give it away. ⑥ The longest-serving teachers all say the same thing at the end. They do not say they taught the students everything. They say they helped each student find a way of learning that worked, gave useful feedback, and then let the student walk forward alone. Take advantage of that time. It is the most valuable part of any school year. 28.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1? A.Most teachers give bad advice about learning. B.A learning method that suits one learner may fail another. C.Students should always study in groups. D.Working harder is the best way to learn a language. 29.According to Paragraph 3, what happens to the students who copy a plan out of a book? A.They usually keep it for a whole term. B.They cut the plan down to one line a day. C.They fill the wall with it. D.They often give it up in the third week. 30.What does the writer advise learners to do in Paragraph 5? A.To ask themselves which part of the advice suits them. B.To follow the old advice without any question. C.To stop using posters and learning charts. D.To wait for a teacher to find the right way. Reading is one of the simplest things we do, and one of the hardest to do well. Below are five ideas taken from the reading habits of experienced readers. They are not rules, but they work. First, do not start at the beginning. Look at the title, the pictures and the first paragraph, and ask yourself what you already know about the topic. 31. You will read faster, because you are looking for answers instead of starting from zero. Second, read with a question in your head. If you have no question, you will soon feel bored. 32. Even a silly question, such as why the writer put that person in the last paragraph, will keep your mind awake. Third, keep a small notebook beside you for the new words you come across. 33. A short sentence in your own words is worth ten pages of copying. Fourth, do not be afraid to go back. A reader never turns back, and that reader is either reading too easily or not reading at all. 34. Going back is not a sign of a weak memory; it is a sign of honest reading. Fifth, and this is the hardest one, stop at the right moment. 35. A good reader is not the one with the most pages, but the one who knows when the book has given what it can give. A. Put it there. Do not wait until the evening, and do not leave your schoolwork open on the shelf. B. Mark the page and write down what you want to find out. C. Reading a book should leave you with something, not simply with a longer sleep. D. Your brain works better when it already has something to hold on to. E. Then close the book and think for a minute about what you have got. F. When a paragraph feels difficult, go back and read it again slowly. G. Speed is not the only measure of a good reader, and a dictionary is not the only resource. 31. 32. 33. 34. 35. ① When Ken started his first term in Grade Nine, his 36. was terrible. The first thing we found was a 51. of facts about the kite. According to it, Mozi was a soldier who was good at woodwork, and some say that he was the 52. of the kite. Reading that book, we saw the 53. of a man who once walked for ten days to stop a war between two states. The biggest 54. for us came on the last page, where the writer showed that Mozi’s idea of a balance between different states was not a dream at all, and that his careful 55. of the world around him gave ordinary people new ideas. Our talk was popular, and students from the other classes stayed to listen as well. Last month I 72.(finish)a one-hour talk for a school group, and my friend Wei, who 73.(know)me for three years, says I 74.(be)to Africa twice. It is clever 75. an elephant to keep such a long story in its brain, and it is important for us to protect the wild places where these animals still live. It is + adj. + of sb. + to do sth. The Method My Teacher Gave Me When Mr. Green leaves our school next month, many of us will miss his class. 男士说最大的变化是 the new subway line(地铁),地铁是最大变化;big park 与 new hospital 在对话中均未出现。 2.A 细节题。男士说自己每天早晨朗读十分钟(read the text aloud every morning),这正是提高口语的方式;watching English films 与 keeping a diary in English 都不是他采用的方法。 3.A 细节题。 6.A 细节题。 I keep forgetting new English words,问题是记不住新单词;keep a study plan 与 hate reading aloud 都没有出现。 7.B 细节题。男士建议把生词写在卡片上(flashcards),并分短时段复习;copying the words ten times 与 reading a whole book in one evening 都是他否定的做法。 8.A 细节题。女士要找回的是那封写着地址的旧信(the old letter with an address on it);旧店名单与旧照片都没有出现。 10.A 细节题。 I work for a company that builds bridges,是桥梁工程师;A 项山区农民与 C 项乡村教师都不是他的职业。 原文提到沙尘暴一夜之间覆盖农田(cover the fields with sand)、土壤沙化(the soil was so sandy);corn 过多与没有港口都没有出现。 14.A 细节题。原文说政府支持项目(the government supported a project)、修建高科技温室(a high-tech greenhouse)、种植灌木固沙(planted rows of bushes to hold the sand);迁往城市与先修铁路都与原文不符——原文的铁路是温室建成后、去年才通车的,并非先修。 A project like this needs the government, the company, the farmers and time;一个工程师能改变整个村庄与旧路更好都与原意相反。 Sign up at the School Library before 3:00 p.m. on Monday,即须先到图书馆报名;付费、带上正在读的书与带上实验本子都没有要求。 Nature keeps its own records. If you are patient and keep your promise to it, it will come back to you,即只要人有耐心并信守承诺,自然会回来,故选 C。 27.A 正误题。 30.A 细节题。 (Which part of the group work suits me? A good learner keeps asking these questions,即建议学习者问自己哪一部分建议适合自己,故选 A。 Your brain works better when it already has something to hold on to(大脑已有东西可依时工作得更好)与前句衔接最紧,故选 D。 Mark the page and write down what you want to find out(标出页码,写下你想找什么)正是提出问题的具体做法,故选 B。 When a paragraph feels difficult, go back and read it again slowly(遇到难的段落就回头慢慢再读一遍)正是"回头读"的具体做法,故选 F。 Then close the book and think for a minute about what you have got(合上书想一分钟,回忆收获了什么)正是"停下来"之后的动作,故选 E。 第三部分 语言运用答案与解析 第一节 完形填空 36.B 由下文 as soon as somebody spoke, the sentences in his head broke into pieces 可知 Ken 的困难在听不懂,故 his listening(听力)terrible。 37.C break into pieces turn into 意为“变成”,方向相反;cut 与 drop 不能与 into pieces 连用。 39.C "Finished a test."与后面的 "Wrote a sentence in English." 40.C 与前一句 Finished a test. Third 与 Quarter 前须加 a,Rest 须与 the 连用,此处均不成立。 harder、longer、quieter 都与“before a test 的复习”矛盾。 【知识点梳理】本组完形集中考查 Unit 1—Unit 4 的高频实词与固定搭配:listening、break into pieces、empty、test、sentence、half、problem、word、habit、understand、enjoy、number、greet、paper 等。 第二节 词汇运用 A. 方框选词(51—55) 51.collection 空后 of facts about the kite 指"关于风筝的一批资料",collect 的名词形式 collection 意为"收藏、一批",a collection of facts 搭配自然。 Next one, lily, you lived in the city ten years ago, right? I would like to talk about an engineer I once worked . with when I was . new to the job. I asked her once why he kept coming back to the same mountain village for years. SHE answered, because the road was here before I was, and I will be here after I am gone. SHE said the plane st. Words, but I have never forgotten them. SHE grew up in a village that had no route at all. In the past, a sandstorm could cover the fields with sand in a single afternoon, and the soil was so Sandy that nothing grew. Well, villagers walk to the nearest town for hours just to buy a bag of corn. Then the government supported a project. Workers built a high tech Greenhouse at the foot of the hill, and they planted rosa bushes to hold the sand in place. Today, the same farmers grow fresh vegetables there, and a Lorry Carries them to the port every morning. The railway that was completed last year has made the whole thing easier still. People sometimes ask me whether one engineer can change a village. I always say no. A project like this needs the government, the company, the farmers and time. But I will say this, without people who keep coming back, nothing here would have grown at all. Good morning, everyone. My name is lee one, and I work for a company that builds bridges.
