Tu Youyou is a famous Chinese scientist. She is known for discovering artemisinin (青蒿素), a medicine that has saved millions of lives around the world.
Tu Youyou was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1930. She studied medicine at Peking University and later worked at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. In 1967, the Chinese government started a project to find a cure for malaria (疟疾), a deadly disease that affects millions of people in tropical areas. Tu Youyou led the project team.
At that time, there was little research on malaria in China. Tu Youyou and her team studied ancient Chinese medical books to find clues. They found a sentence in a book written by a Tang Dynasty doctor: “Soak artemisia (青蒿) in water and squeeze out the juice to treat fevers.” This gave them the idea to extract (提取) medicine from artemisia.

However, testing the medicine was dangerous. Tu Youyou volunteered to test it on herself first. “I wanted to make sure the medicine was safe,” she said.
In 2015, Tu Youyou won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her discovery. She was the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize in science. She said, “The prize belongs to the whole team and to traditional Chinese medicine.”

The Journey to Self-Discovery
When I was 16, I thought I knew exactly who I was and what I wanted from life. I was certain I would become a doctor, get married young, and live happily ever after. But life had other plans for me.
My first year at medical school was a disaster. I failed three courses and barely passed the others. I was miserable. I thought I had wasted my time and disappointed my parents. I wanted to quit, but my mother said, “You don’t have to have everything figured out right now. Take a break and think about what makes you happy.”
So I did. I took a semester off and travelled to a small village in Yunnan Province. I worked as a volunteer teacher at a local primary school. The children there had almost no resources — no textbooks, no computers, not even enough chairs. But they were the happiest kids I had ever met. They laughed, played, and learned with such enthusiasm that I found myself smiling again.
One day, a little girl asked me, “Teacher, what does your heart want to do?” I was stunned. I had never asked myself that question. I had been so focused on meeting others’ expectations that I had forgotten what I truly wanted.
I stayed in the village for another six months. When I returned home, I transferred to the education programme. I am now training to become a primary school teacher. I may not earn as much money as a doctor, but I wake up every morning feeling excited about the day ahead.
My journey taught me that self-discovery is not a one-time event. It’s a lifelong process. We change, grow, and learn new things about ourselves every day. It’s okay not to have all the answers. What matters is that we keep asking the questions and have the courage to follow our hearts.

B.Difficult — they didn’t pass three courses.
C.Average — they passed everything easily.
D.Interesting — they made many friends.
38.Why did the author take a semester off?
A.To travel abroad with family. B.To recover from an illness.
C.To volunteer and see what they wanted. D.To prepare for entrance exams.
39.What did the little girl’s question make the author realise?
A.That they should work harder.
B.That they had forgotten their true passion.
C.That teaching is more important than medicine.
D.That children can be wiser than adults.
40.What is the main message of the passage?
A.Medical school is too difficult for most people.
B.Children in rural areas need more help.
C.Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, not a one-time event.
D.Parents should choose careers for their children.

四、信息还原(共5小题,每道题2分,满分10分)
Have you ever wondered why some people can keep working on their goals while others give up easily? 41 In fact, anyone can develop persistence if they use the right methods.
First, start with small goals. It is hard to keep going if your goal is too big at the very beginning. 42 For example, if you want to read 100 books a year, start by reading one page a day. Small wins will give you confidence to keep going.
Second, make a plan. 43 When you have a clear plan, you know exactly what to do every day. You won’t easily give up when you meet difficulties.
Third, don’t be afraid of failures. 44 Every time you fail, you learn something new. Instead of feeling sad, see failures as chances to improve.
45 When you feel tired or want to give up, think about why you started. Remembering your purpose will give you the power to keep moving forward. Persistence is not something you are born with. It is a skill you can build day by day.
A.A clear plan helps you stay on track.
B.The answer is persistence.
C.Finally, always remember your reason for starting.
D.It’s better to break big goals into small steps.
E.Failure is a normal part of the journey to success.
F.Most people give up because they don’t have big dreams.

七、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
Have you had a headache during a test? Have you ever been so worried about something that you have a headache or even can’t sleep well at night? If so, then you know what stress is. Stress is a feeling when you are worried about something. Too much worry in your mind may make you feel uncomfortable. It can even make your body feel bad or give you a stomachache or a headache. Stress can influence both your mind and body.
However, there are different kinds of stress. Some kinds of stress are good and others are bad. Good stress might happen when you’re called to answer questions in class or when you have to give a speech. This kind of stress can help you to get things better done. For example, you may do a better job in your test if the stress pushes you to prepare better before the test.
On the other hand, bad stress can happen if the stress lasts too long. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you’re having problems at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy every day. This kind of stress isn’t going to help you. And it can actually make you sick.
The best way to face stress is to have a balanced life. Make sure you keep yourself in mind: sleep, exercise, leisure, and food. If you get enough sleep and eat healthily, and if you exercise and leave time for fun, you’ll probably feel less stressed.

The team worked day and night in a small lab. They tested more than 200 kinds of artemisia and made 380 extracts. Finally, in 1971, they found that artemisinin could kill the malaria parasite (寄生虫).

37.What was the author’s first year at medical school like?
A.Excellent — they topped all their classes.

E.Failure is a normal part of the journey to success.
