Digitising a site (遗址数字化)
More than fifty years ago, archaeologists began to record the relics (文物) they found. They wrote in notebooks and drew by hand. While this method was careful, it was slow, and some of the information was hard to share.
Today many sites are digitised. High-resolution cameras and 3D scanners (扫描器) build a model of every object in a few hours. Since the work started in 2015, more than 20,000 relics have been modelled, and a student at school can look at them on a screen.
Digitising helps in two ways. First, the model never breaks. Second, the same model can be used in a classroom, on a phone and in a museum. A student who cannot visit the site can still study it.
However, technology cannot replace (替代) people. A machine may measure a bronze mask, but only a person can ask why it was made. The past needs both a scanner and a story.
16. When did the digitising work start?
A. In 1990. B. In 2015. C. In 1974. D. In 2020.
17. Which paragraph tells us the advantages of digitising?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
18. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. New technology helps keep the past alive.
B. All the relics in the world have been digitised.
C. Archaeologists no longer write notes.
D. Technology has completely replaced archaeologists.

Hello, everyone! Here comes this month’s School Brain Game. We’re going to talk about what you would like to invent. Let your imagination run wild and post your ideas below.
—Andrew, Student Union President
Students have a lot of homework. They often go to bed late and wake up early for school. I’d like to invent a machine to help them ______ in the morning without waking them up. It would carefully pick them up, take them to the bathroom and brush their teeth. It would get them dressed and set them down at the dining room table. Then it would gently wake them for breakfast. They’d go to school on time while still getting a good night’s sleep!
—Michelle, from Grade 9
I’d invent a time machine that could take us to any day in history. We would finally be able to answer questions like “What killed all the dinosaurs (恐龙)?” Just think how different life would be if every question about history could be answered. We would know almost everything. And we could visit the past or the future to see how humans have changed. Imagine visiting your ancestors (祖先)! Imagine going to the future to tell people about life in the past! Just think about all that fun!

Many people spend their vacations doing nothing on a beach, but Kirsty Ross wanted to do something different. “I spent three weeks working in the sun, digging to find pieces of old cups and plates,” she says. “I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent. My friends thought I was crazy, but I had an amazing time. It was my best vacation ever!”
Kirsty was working for a volunteer program in Tunisia in North Africa. Groups of twenty-five young volunteers work together on archaeological sites to find important information about the past. The volunteers have to be very careful because it’s important not to damage the things they find. Many of them work at Tunisia’s biggest archaeological site in Carthage, but some of them work in other important sites in the country.
Kirsty explains why she chose this vacation. “I’ve always been interested in history, and Tunisia has a lot of very important archaeological sites. People were living in Carthage 3,000 years ago. I love being in places that are so old. It was exciting to find pots and other things people used every day.”
It was harder for Kirsty than for some of the others. “I come from Alaska, which is a cold place,” she says. “It was hard for me to work under the hot North African sun. But it was a wonderful chance to meet people from other countries and to learn about the past. It changed my life. Now I’m hoping to learn more about it in college.”
22. What does the underlined word “damage” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Move. B. Break. C. Lose. D. Touch.
23. Which of the following is NOT true about Kirsty?
A. She thought the archaeological work was hard but interesting.
B. She spent 3 weeks working for the volunteer program.
C. She was excited about finding things people used every day.
D. She enjoyed working under the hot sun in Tunisia.
24. According to the passage, Kirsty may hope to study __________ in college.
A. the art of designing buildings B. people’s lives in other countries
C. cultures and things of the past D. animals and their living habits
25. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To give an example of an archaeological vacation.
B. To let us know the importance of archaeology.
C. To tell us the reason why Kirsty likes archaeology.
D. To ask more people to take part in the volunteer work.
【答案】22. B 23. D 24. C 25. A

【23题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“It was hard for me to work under the hot North African sun.”可知,Kirsty觉得在炎热的北非阳光下工作很困难,D项说她享受在烈日下工作,与原文不符,是不正确的表述。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But it was a wonderful chance to meet people from other countries and to learn about the past. It changed my life. Now I’m hoping to learn more about it in college.”

—Troy, from Grade 8

Many people spend their vacations doing nothing on a beach, but Kirsty Ross wanted to do something different. “I spent three weeks working in the sun, digging to find pieces of old cups and plates,” she says. “I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent. It was harder for Kirsty than for some of the others. “I come from Alaska, which is a cold place,” she says. “It was hard for me to work under the hot North African sun.
