I joined a club called “Passing Help” last month. As for why I joined this club, there is a touching story behind it.
One evening this May, I went to the countryside on business. My old car broke down suddenly on my way home. It was 25 miles away from my house. I wanted to get a ride, but there was no car passing by. It was also hard to take a taxi in such a lonely place. So I decided to take a bus home. I walked forward and soon found a bus stop nearby.
After a while, a bus came, but it did not go to my town. The bus driver was a young woman. She told me which bus I should take. I waited there for about thirty minutes. During that time, a truck passed by, but there was no space for me to take a ride. Just then a car came to me and a woman came out of the car. She was just the bus driver. “When I reached the bus station, I found that the bus to your town couldn’t come, so I returned here to pick you up. I just can’t leave you here,” she said, “Get in my car and I will take you back to your home.”
“It is a long way,” I said.
“Come on, sir,” she said. “Let’s go.”
On the way she told me a story, which happened a few years ago. Her car ran out of gas halfway home. As she was wondering what to do, an old man driving by offered to drive her up to a gas station and then back to her car. The old man told her that he was a member of Passing Help and asked her to join it too.
When we got to my home, it was already very late. I wanted to give her some money as a thank-you, but she didn’t accept it. “As a club member, I’m just trying to help those in need and do something nice for somebody else. Pass it along!” she said.
29. What kind of person is the driver from the story?
A. She is very wealthy and likes to help others. B. She is a kind and responsible person.
C. She is only interested in making money. D. She is not very friendly to strangers.
30. Why did the bus driver tell the author her own experience?
A. To explain why she joined the “Passing Help” club.
B. To show that she had also faced difficult situations.
C. To ask the author to join the club.
D. To make the author feel better about his situation.
31. What is the main theme of the story?
A. The importance of having a well-made car.
B. The difficulties of traveling in the countryside.
C. The kindness of strangers and the power of helping others.
D. The importance of being a member of a club.
32. What can we learn from the “Passing Help” club?
A. People should only help those who can help them in return.
B. It is better to avoid helping strangers to avoid inconvenience.
C. Joining a club is the only way to be kind.
D. Helping others can create a positive cycle of kindness.
(C)
Competition is a lot like a game. It’s fun to play games, and we all like to win. But remember, for someone to win, someone else has to lose. Even though it’s not always nice, competition has been around for a very long time. From old Greek games to soccer today, people have always enjoyed competing.
Competition isn’t just in sports. It’s also in business, science, and even when people look for love. Businessmen say that competition helps keep things fair (公平的) in the market. In science, scientists compete for improving people’s lives. Competition seems to be everywhere!
Some people think we are born to compete because it helps us live better. But can we use competition to help others? For example, can we make people save energy (e. g. water and electricity) or take part in volunteer work by competing?
In a study, scientists looked at a competition at Princeton University called “Do-it-in-the- Dark”. Students try to use less electricity, and the group that saved the most won a prize. The study showed that during the competition, students used less electricity. But when the competition ended, they went back to using more electricity. This happened at many other universities too.
The problem is that this kind of competition only works while there’s a prize. Students are more likely to take actions as long as the university maintains the prize. However, in our example, students stopped saving energy as soon as the competition ended. Once there was no prize, people would stop saving energy. This is because people save energy for the prize, not because they care about the environment.
Researchers say that if we want people to keep doing good things, like saving energy, we need them to care about it for the right reasons. We need them to understand why it’s important, not just to win a prize.
So, competition can be fun and helpful sometimes, but it’s not always the best way to get people to do good things. Through cooperation, working together and sharing experience during competitions, people can understand the true meaning of competition and know about the long-term benefits. It’s time we start doing the right thing, for the right reasons.
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. We should cooperate in the right way.
B. Competition takes place in many fields.
C. Businessmen compete to improve our lives.
D. Cooperating is more important than competing.
34. The example of the “Do-it-in-the-Dark” competition shows that ________.
A. people may do right things because of a prize in competitions
B. competitions can help people get more experience from others
C. competitions can encourage people to reach the long-term goal
D. people should continue to cooperate after winning competitions
35. What does the underlined word “maintains” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Chooses. B. Changes. C. Keeps. D. Earns.
36. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain the importance of competition.
B. To help people to face competitions bravely.
C. To give suggestions for winning competitions.
D. To tell people to compete for the right reasons.
(D)
Where do you usually spend your vacations, at well-known places or less-known ones? Now, a growing number of young holidaymakers prefer to spend their leisure time at less-known tourist spots in China to look for a unique, relaxed holiday experience. People call it “reverse tourism”.
“Man can only move one meter every ten minutes on Huangshan Mountain” became a hot topic on social media during this year’s National Day Holiday in October, a time when well-known tourist attractions like Huangshan are always overcrowded. Too many tourists usually make it hard for visitors to have a good time.
Spending vacations at less-known places is also a good way to save money. The prices of plane tickets, meals, hotel stays and so on are usually high at well-known places. But at less-known ones, they are not. Famous tourist spots even often raise their prices during holidays.
Another key is that less-known places can bring a feeling of freshness. They are not as “commercial” (商业化) as developed ones and are able to provide new and natural experiences. Besides, unlike well-known spots, some unexplored places with little online exposure can give more surprises.
Many people think reverse tourism is not a bad thing. It means that visitors have more places to visit, which brings chances for people at less-known places to get more money. More importantly, reverse tourism inspires those well-known spots to improve themselves for better service.
37. What does “reverse tourism” mean according to the passage?
A. A trip to experience something unique and relaxed.
B. A trip to less-known places instead of famous ones.
C. A trip to spend one’s leisure time at one’s hometown.
D. A trip for young holidaymakers to relax themselves.
38. Which are the reasons for NOT visiting well-known places?
① There are usually too many people there.
② Tourists have poor choices of hotels and foods.
③ Tourists may spend more money on meals and hotel stays.
④ Tourists know these places so well that they don’t feel surprised.
A. ①②④ B. ①②③ C. ②③④ D. ①③④
39. What does the underlined word “they” refer to?
A. Well-known places. B. Plane tickets, meals and hotel stays.
C. Less-known places. D. The prices of everything during a trip.
40. What is the purpose (目的) of the passage?
A. To tell us something about reverse tourism.
B. To ask us to visit less-known tourist spots.
C. To help the locals make money through tourism.
D. To give a travel guide to less-known places.
