I had started my academic journey as a university instructor in Ethiopia, where I found immense satisfaction in guiding students. However, the limited resources and opportunities there made it difficult to pursue my own growth, so I went to the United States for my Ph.D. and postdoc. As I progressed in my training, I internalized the dominant narrative that success meant securing a university teaching post at a research-intensive institution.
But during my postdoc, I realized I needed to change my perspective. I am a husband and father of two daughters, one of whom requires ongoing medical care. My modest salary and limited benefits made every day feel like walking a tightrope over an abyss (深渊) of financial instability and emotional exhaustion. Professional stress bled into my home life. In turn, the weight of my personal responsibilities made professional setbacks feel even more crushing. Trapped in this cycle, I began to reconsider my career path.
I began exploring alternatives. Then I was particularly drawn to smaller universities that, although they still support research, place a greater emphasis on teaching. I liked that these universities emphasize expertise and vision, along with the opportunity to build meaningful academic programs. They also offered adequate pay and comprehensive benefits — factors that were becoming increasingly important as I considered my long-term career stability. The fog began to lift. This wasn’t about settling for a less renowned institution. It was about choosing an environment that would allow me to pursue my professional aspiration (抱负) while also attending to my personal life.
Now two years into my position at a smaller university, my days have shifted from long, uninterrupted lab hours to balancing teaching, advising, and research. With my institution’s support, I felt clarity for the first time in years. The students’ engagement and curiosity reawakened my passion for guidance. And research didn’t disappear — it evolved.
This journey has redefined success. For me, it isn’t merely about high-impact publications or renowned grants (津贴) — it’s about creating opportunities for students to thrive, asking meaningful research questions, and maintaining a balance between professional aspirations and personal well-being. Here, I’ve discovered not just success, but significance.
4. According to the article, how did the author previously understand the meaning of success?
A. Success meant having a high salary and financial stability.
B. Success meant balancing professional work with family responsibilities.
C. Success meant landing a position at a famous institution.
D. Success meant guiding students and enjoying teaching regardless of institution types.
5. What might be the author’s primary consideration in favoring smaller universities?
A. They are equally renowned and impactful.
B. They focus merely on high-impact research and publications.
C. They offer less research work and fewer teaching responsibilities.
D. They value personal development and provide competitive compensation.
6. What does the author think of his current job?
A. Respected but stressful. B. Demanding but flexible.
C. Dull and restrictive. D. Fulfilling and balanced.
7. What lesson can we learn from the author’s story?
A. Success is not one-size-fits-all.
B. Every coin has two sides.
C. Adversity leads to prosperity.
D. The grass is always greener on the other side.

In the heart of the UAE desert, a humble plant called Tamarix aphylla doesn’t just survive in conditions with significant concentrations of salt; it actually grows rather well, with heights up to 18 meters, thanks to a major biological adaptation. While driving through the UAE desert, materials scientist Marih Al-Handawi and her co-workers were deeply drawn to the plant whose appeal contrasts sharply with the terrible landscape.
The team recorded videos of Tamarix aphylla plants in their natural habitat to disclose the secret behind their remarkable survival.
The plant’s roots absorb salty water from the desert soil. Then, like a magician playing a trick, it releases a concentrated salt solution (溶液) onto the outer surface of its leaves. As the salt solution is heated under the sun, it transforms itself into a crystalline (结晶的) mixture.
The team’s analysis of the chemical composition of the plant’s salty mixture revealed over ten different types of salt crystallized together, primarily sodium chloride (NaCl), together with a special element: lithium sulfate (Li₂SO₄). Compared to sodium chloride which brings in water at a relatively high humidity (湿度) level, lithium sulfate is not picky at all — it works even at much lower humidity. The collected water staying on the plant’s leaves is greedily absorbed. This led the researchers to conclude that the presence of lithium sulfate explains the ability of the plant to live in the dry UAE desert.
“Our findings not only reveal a unique, natural complex strategy for water consumption, they also hold the promise of taking cloud seeding (rainmaking) practices to new heights, based on a natural salt that could efficiently harvest water from the air,” said Al-Handawi. “Currently, cloud seeding relies on the use of chemicals to increase the water amount in the air, some of which are potentially harmful to the environment.”
In a world where there is an increasing shortage of fresh water, the research should take center stage. Within a broader context, this natural strategy uncovered by the research team for harvesting humidity using environmentally friendly salts could also provide a bioinspired approach that can enhance the function of currently available water collection technologies.
8. What feature of Tamarix aphylla amazes the research team?
A. The high concentration of salt in its trunks.
B. Its biological response to high temperatures.
C. Its ability to stand deserts with high salt content.
D. Its adaptability to changing environmental conditions.
9. What is the primary role of lithium sulfate formed on the leaves?
A. To shelter the leaves from strong sunlight.
B. To aid in the process of salt crystallization.
C. To help the leaves take in water at low humidity.
D. To make the leaves bear the highly humid environment.
10. What lesson can weather authorities learn from the researchers’ findings?
A. Introducing salt-tolerant plants to water-stressed places.
B. Assessing the effect of cloud seeding on regional plants.
C. Seeking new methods for monitoring water levels in the air.
D. Making cloud seeding more sustainable by using certain salt.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Desert Plant Reveals Its Secret of Harvesting Water from Air.
B. The Serious Shortage of Fresh Water in the UAE Desert.
C. New Ways to Remove Salt from Soil in Desert Areas.
D. Lithium Sulfate: A Common Salt Found in All Desert Plants.

For whatever reason, at some point or another, you may have decided to say the same word over and over again. After repeating the word a few times, it started to lose its meaning. Experientially, it just became an abstract sound. Leon James, a professor of psychology, made this phenomenon the subject of research, coining the term “semantic satiation” (语义饱和).
Put simply, sensory signals stimulate the firing of regions in the brain that are linked to concepts and categories that give those signals meaning. The sound of a word is one such signal. After firing once, it takes more energy to fire those brain cells a second time. So when we hear a word the second time, it is more energy-intensive for the brain to continually link it to the concepts associated with the word. It takes even more energy at the third time. Maybe those cells won’t even fire a fourth time. James called this reactive inhibition.
For humans, semantic satiation is a universal phenomenon for all words, but it may take longer for different words to lose their meaning. For example, you may have more vivid and intense mental images tied to a word like “hospital” compared to a word like “lamp”. Because of the underlying feelings and meanings, your mind cycles through meaningful categories that are linked to the word “hospital”, delaying the point where the word feels empty. By contrast, the word “lamp” has less meaningful implications.
Neuroscientist David Huber finds a similarity between semantic satiation and the brain’s ignoring familiar environmental information. Neural habituation (神经习惯化), a process studied by Huber, is the reduction in our brains’ processing capacities in relation to things we have already experienced. From a neurological perspective, habituation helps our brains reduce the amount of disruption from things that we have already seen and thus conserve the limited mental energy for novel information.
The next time you experience satiation in one of its forms, consider it an ace in the hole: In a world where we’re constantly flooded with sensory inputs, associative satiation is a technique our minds have evolved to ignore what’s not important.
12. What causes semantic satiation according to the passage?
A. The brain gradually loses the ability to hear the sound of repeated words.
B. The brain fails to repeatedly activate specific brain cells.
C. The brain intentionally ignores the abstract concepts and categories.
D. The brain requires less mental energy to continually connect words with their concepts.
13. What makes some words take much longer to reach semantic satiation?
A. The sound intensity when the words are spoken.
B. The richness of associated meanings and emotions.
C. The frequency of the words used in daily life.
D. The reactive inhibition level of relevant brain cells.
14. How does neural habituation benefit us?
A. By enhancing our emotional responses to words.
B. By strengthening the memory of past experiences.
C. By prioritizing the processing of new information.
D. By preventing the occurrence of reactive inhibition.
15. What does the underlined part “an ace in the hole” in the last paragraph mean?
A. A blessing. B. A reaction. C. A shift. D. A routine.

Is Sugarcoat Sweet?
In our pursuit to maintain harmony, avoid conflict, and prevent hurt feelings, we’re sometimes tempted to be polite to sugarcoat the truth. ____16____ However, too much display of this behavior can muddy the waters of communication. Here are the dangers of sugarcoating:
____17____ Your job isn’t to soften the blow when delivering bad news to the extent that you leave others feeling confused about your intentions. When messages are wrapped in layers of politeness, the true intention or meaning can be lost — the receiver may not fully grasp the seriousness or urgency of the message.
Leave issues unsolved. Sugarcoated messages can prevent important issues from being tackled. When feedback is not clear, it becomes difficult for the receivers to take appropriate action. They may not know exactly what is expected of them or how to go about making the necessary changes. ____18____ Meanwhile, the present status will continue, leaving important issues unresolved.
Get upset and annoyed. Over time, the lack of clarity has a significant effect on relationships and can lead to frustration and complaint, especially when one party has put in an effort to express themselves but feels unacknowledged. The dissatisfaction may lead to their suspicion of the authenticity of the relationship and doubt about whether their efforts are being wasted. ____19____
While it’s natural to want to spare others’ feelings, overly polite communication can sometimes do more harm than good. ____20____ Only in this way can we reduce misunderstandings and have relationships built on trust and clarity. Remember, the goal is not to abandon politeness completely but to balance it with honesty, ensuring that our communications are both kind and effective.
A. Reduce trust.
B. Cause misinterpretations.
C. This avoids displeasing them.
D. The uncertainty can lead to inaction.
E. This can create a cycle of negative emotions.
F. Being polite is generally seen as a positive performance.
G. So it is wise to be open for more direct and honest interactions.

“Mom, we have discussed this. You may not post anything without my consent (许可).” These words, posted on Instagram by 14-year-old Apple Martin in response to an image of her shared by her mum, Gwyneth Paltrow, have aroused again the ___21___ over whether it is ever OK to put pictures of your children online.
Apple’s words could become a common ___22___ as the current generation of children grows up. Many of them will have had ___23___ footprints before they could even walk. About 98 percent of mothers and 89 percent of fathers report having ___24___ photos of their child to Facebook, according to a 2012 US study.
Concerns mainly center on two issues. First, ___25___. According to Australia’s eSafety Commission, about half of images shared on harmful websites were taken from social media sites. Standing in the dim attic (阁楼), 16-year-old Leo stared at the dusty violin case. It had belonged to his grandfather, a quiet man who had passed away when Leo was only six. Leo barely remembered him — just a gentle laugh, and the way his grandfather’s hands always seemed to be busy with something. After the funeral, the violin was stored away and gradually forgotten.
Leo’s mother, however, had never stopped believing it was something special. “It’s not just a violin, Leo,” she would say. “It has a voice. Your grandfather used to play it every evening after dinner. He said music was the only language that never needed translating.” But Leo wasn’t so sure. The instrument looked old, fragile, and entirely out of place in his modern, digital world.
Leo had been learning the violin for three years, but progress was painfully slow. His classmates seemed to master pieces effortlessly, while he struggled with the same scales (音阶) day after day. Worse still, his teacher, Mrs. Hale, had assigned him a difficult solo for the school’s annual concert. The piece was called “Remembrance,” a slow, emotional composition full of long trembling notes that required a depth of feeling Leo wasn’t sure he possessed. He practiced for hours, but the notes remained flat and lifeless.
One rainy afternoon, unable to bear his own playing any longer, Leo climbed into the attic to escape. His eyes fell on the old case. Slowly, he knelt down and opened it. Inside lay a violin clearly handcrafted, its wood darkened by time, its surface marked with tiny scratches. Beneath the strings was a faded photograph: his grandfather, much younger, standing on a small stage with this very violin in his hands. On the back, in shaky handwriting, were three words: “For the listeners.”
Leo carefully lifted the violin. It felt surprisingly light, as if it had been waiting. He drew the bow across the strings. The sound that emerged was not perfect — raw and slightly uneven — but surprisingly beautiful, like a voice that had been silent for too long.
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Leo brought the violin downstairs and began to practice the assigned solo piece with it.

D
A. A blessing. B. A reaction. C. A shift. D. A routine.
B 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据第二段“After firing once, it takes more energy to fire those brain cells a second time. So when we hear a word the second time, it is more energy-intensive for the brain to continually link it to the concepts associated with the word. It takes even more energy at the third time. Maybe those cells won’t even fire a fourth time.
根据第三段“For example, you may have more vivid and intense mental images tied to a word like “hospital” compared to a word like “lamp”. Because of the underlying feelings and meanings, your mind cycles through meaningful categories that are linked to the word “hospital”, delaying the point where the word feels empty. By contrast, the word “lamp” has less meaningful implications.(例如,相比于“台灯”这类词,“医院”更容易让你联想到鲜活、强烈的画面。因为背后承载着情感与内涵,你的大脑会不断调取和“医院”相关的各类有意义信息,推迟这个词变得空洞的时刻。相比之下,“台灯”承载的意义内涵更少。)”可知,部分词语关联更加丰富的情感与含义,会延缓语义饱和的到来。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“From a neurological perspective, habituation helps our brains reduce the amount of disruption from things that we have already seen and thus conserve the limited mental energy for novel information.(从神经学角度来看,习惯化能够减少熟悉事物带来的干扰,从而节省有限的脑力,用来处理新信息。)”
根据最后一段“In a world where we’re constantly flooded with sensory inputs, associative satiation is a technique our minds have evolved to ignore what’s not important.(在一个我们不断被各种感官信息淹没的世界里,关联饱和是我们的大脑进化出来的一种机制,用来过滤掉无关紧要的信息。)” 由此可推知“an ace in the hole”表示一件好事、一种恩赐,和blessing同义。

F 17. B 18. D 19. E 20. G

Avoid posting personal information to minimize the risk of identity theft, and ensure that your privacy settings are ___28___. You might also consider using a pet name for your child online, making it harder to ___29___ information.
A second issue, as Apple notes, is that of consent. What would your child want to see about themselves online in the future? Videos of them having a mid-temper outburst may be amusing now — but could be used by bullies. Given that employers often use social networking sites to ___30___ for information about candidates, it is also worth considering how they might ___31___ such information.
Even seemingly innocuous (无伤大雅的) photos may become a source of ___32___ in the future, depending on your child’s character or your changing relationship with them.
Of course, certain photos are likely to be more ___33___ than others: an embarrassing birthmark; that time your baby spread waste all over the floor. Many parents value the ___34___ that online sharing of parental struggles can bring. But our children may not ___35___ it.

主语The design和build之间是被动关系,句子描述客观事实,时态用一般现在时,主语The design是单数,因此be动词用is,build的过去分词是built。
由“its softness and understated elegance”可知,此处用介词for表原因,意为“因为,由于”。

Dear Student Union,
I’m writing to share my opinion about the activity of Sports Culture Week. From my perspective, the Athlete Sharing Session is a better choice.
By listening to athletes’ real-life experiences, we can gain a deeper understanding of perseverance and sportsmanship. It offers us valuable spiritual encouragement, which simple games cannot provide. Their inspiring stories can motivate us to face various difficulties bravely not only in our study but also in daily life.
I sincerely hope the activity will be a great success.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
范文2
Dear Student Union,
I’m writing to express my opinion on the activities for our Sports Culture Week. Personally, I strongly recommend Fun Sports Games.
Compared with the Athlete Sharing Session, these games enable more students to participate in outdoor activities in person instead of just listening to stories. They can not only relieve us of heavy academic pressure, but also foster our sense of teamwork and strengthen friendships between classmates. Furthermore, lively group competitions will create a joyful atmosphere and build up a vibrant campus sports culture. More students will get motivated to take regular exercise.
I hope my suggestion will be taken into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Leo brought the violin downstairs and began to practice the assigned solo piece with it.

Leo brought the violin downstairs and began to practice the assigned solo piece with it. To his surprise, the music flowed out differently. He thought of the photograph, of his grandfather standing on that small stage, and of those three words: “For the listeners.” Suddenly, “Remembrance” wasn’t just an assignment anymore. It was a conversation between a boy and the grandfather he barely knew. His fingers, guided by something deeper than technique, found the trembling notes that had once seemed impossible. For the first time in months, Leo felt a quiet confidence growing inside him.
The night of the concert finally arrived. Leo walked onto the stage. He took a deep breath and began to play. The notes that emerged were full of life. When the final note faded, there was a moment of complete stillness, followed by a wave of applause that felt like a warm embrace. Leo smiled, realizing that the violin’s voice had been there all along. It had simply been waiting for someone who was ready to listen — and to remember.
