Here are four special celebrations happening in June: National Go Barefoot Day (June 1) Established after the 2004 tsunami, this day promotes barefoot walking for health benefits like stronger muscles while supporting Soles4Souls, a non-profit that has provided 19 million shoes globally. You can join barefoot activities or organize shoe collections. By simply taking off your shoes, you can improve your own health while helping children get the shoes they need. World Oceans Day (June 8) Oceans cover 66% of Earth and provide 50% of our oxygen, yet 8 million tons of plastic waste pollute them yearly. This day honors the ocean’s irreplaceable roles while inspiring worldwide participation. People can get involved by cleaning beaches, reducing single-use plastics, and watching educational films — turning awareness into action for a healthier planet. Be a Kid Again Day (June 12) This lighthearted day encourages adults to relive childhood joys — whether sliding down playground slides, building sandcastles, or rewatching classic kids’movies. Beyond personal enjoyment, the celebration also supports meaningful causes like A Kid Again, a US non-profit organization that provides fun-filled adventures for children with life-threatening illnesses. Helen Keller Day (June 27) Held every year on June 27, this day honors Helen Keller (1880-1968) who became the first person with her disabilities to earn a college degree and wrote 12 books. While celebrating her amazing life, the day also recognizes all those who support the blind and deaf community through events like charity fashion shows and public readings of Keller’s inspirational works. 21. One tiny 9-inch plant, bought for $1.25 in the spring, has already taken over much of my rose bed, covering much of other plants, and is well on its way to the front door. Roses require a good deal of care, and if it weren’t for the pleasure they give, it wouldn’t be worth the work. As it is, I have a garden full of sweet-smelling roses for most of the year. Bushes must be pruned in early spring, leaving ugly woody branches until the new growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant. A big mistake. Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with full sun and regular fertilizing have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I placed around it as the plant grew has long disappeared under the thick leaves. Now the task I face in harvesting the fruit is twofold. First, I have to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almost have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw my full fist without dropping the prize so dearly won. I found two full-blown white roses completely hidden as I picked tomatoes in June. But they were weak and the leaves already yellow for lack of light. Here I am faced with a painful small decision: To tear up a wonderful and productive tomato plant that offers up between ten and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to several expensive and treasured roses. Like Scarlett in Gone With the Wind, I’ll think about that tomorrow. 24. What are the requirements for the healthy growth of rose? A. Frequent pruning and fertilizing. B. A lot of care and the right soil. C. Tomato plants grown alongside. D. Cages placed around the roots. 【答案】B 【解析】【细节理解题】根据第三段中的“Roses require a good deal of care, and if it weren’t for the pleasure they give, it wouldn’ t be worth the work. (玫瑰需要精心呵护,如果不是为了它带来的乐趣,它就不值得花那么多功夫)”和第四段中的“Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes.(正好适合玫瑰生长的土壤条件对番茄来说更完美)”可知,玫瑰健康生长需要大量的照料和正确的土壤。故选B项。 25. The writer planted the tomato plant because______. A. there was room for it in the garden B. the soil was just right for it C. it cost only $1.25 D. the roses’branches needed to be covered 【答案】A 【解析】【细节理解题】从第三段倒数第二句“It was the space available in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant. (是因为花园里有足够的空间,我才种了一株小小的番茄)”可知,作家种西红柿是因为花园里有空地。故选A项。 26. This year the writer’s roses were_______. Scientists from the University of Bristol did this research and said that as our world gets warmer, we can expect even hotter heatwaves in the future. The study found five very hot heatwaves that were not talked about much. Dr. Vikki Thompson, who led the study, said that the heatwave in Canada and the United States was very surprising, but there were even hotter ones in the past. She also said that using what we know about the climate, we can guess that very hot days will get more common in the next100 years. Heatwaves can cause a lot of problems. The one in western North America was very bad and caused many disasters. It also started big fires that damaged many things and ruined crops. People will remember this heatwave because it caused so much damage. Even though the hottest places are not always the ones that have the biggest problems, they are often connected. Knowing more about the very hot days and where they happen can help protect the most vulnerable regions. Professor Dann Mitchell, who also worked on the study, said that climate change is a big health problem for everyone on Earth. He pointed out that many heatwaves in places that are not very rich were not noticed. When a country gets very hot, it can cause many people to die, especially if the temperature is not normal for them. The University of Bristol cares about the problems caused by climate change and wants to help fix them. In 2019, it was the first university in the UK to say that there is a climate emergency. 28. The Cambridge study used data about the physical activity participation of more than a million young people aged 5 to 17 internationally. It found that in countries where most schools require students to wear uniforms, fewer young people meet the 60 minutes of physical activity per day recommended by the WHO. Among primary school students, the difference in physical activity between girls and boys was found to be wider in countries where uniforms were common. The same result was not found in secondary school-aged students. This could be explained by the fact that younger children move more throughout the school day than older students, for example, through running or climbing at break and lunchtime. It proves that girls feel less comfortable in joining in active play if they are wearing certain types of clothing, such as skirts or dresses. Dr Mairead Ryan from the University of Cambridge, said, “Schools often prefer to use uniforms for different reasons. We are not trying to suggest a blanket ban on them, but to present new facts to support decision-making. School communities could consider design, and whether certain characteristics of a uniform might either encourage or limit any opportunities for physical activity across the day.” A 2021 study in England found that the design of girls’ PE uniforms prevented students from joining in certain activities. Other studies have suggested that girls feel insecure about joining in physical activity when wearing uniforms in which they do not feel comfortable. “Girls might feel less confident about doing things like cartwheels and tumbles in the playground, or riding a bike on a windy day, if they are wearing skirts or dresses,” said Dr Esther Van Sluijs. “Social rules and expectations often influence what they feel they can do in these clothes. Unfortunately, when it comes to promoting physical health, that’s a problem.” 32. Students of all grades were rushing around. But for one student, today was unlike any other day. Today was the first day of high school for a freshman, Jamie. Jamie had always been a bit of a shy kid, but she had always loved her studies. She made up her mind to make the most of her high school years, but she knew that it wouldn’t be easy. As she walked down the hallways, Jamie couldn’t help but feel worried. The older students seemed so confident, while she felt small and unimportant. But Jamie was determined to succeed, no matter what challenges came her way. It wasn’t long before Jamie was faced with a challenge. In her first week of school, she was assigned a project that required a lot of research and planning. Jamie tried her best, but she soon realized that it was beyond her power. As she struggled to complete the project, Jamie began to doubt herself. She wondered if she could adapt to high school. But then, something great happened. Jamie’s classmates noticed how hard she was working, and they started to offer help and support. One classmate, named Alex, approached Jamie and shared his own experience of struggling with a similar project last year. He offered to share his research notes and tips on organizing the project. Other classmates also joined in, suggesting useful websites and books. With their collective assistance, Jamie felt a surge of confidence. She no longer felt alone in her struggle. Together, they worked late into the night, refining ideas and polishing the presentation. When the project was finally completed, Jamie felt not only proud but also grateful for the newfound friendships she had formed. 【续写思路】根据开头语 "Jamie’s classmates noticed how hard she was working, and they started to offer help and support.",续写应围绕同学的帮助展开:可以写同学主动分享经验、帮她分解任务,也可写她由此重拾信心、主动融入集体。 (Tapescript) Text 1 Woman: Hey, can you put down your mobile phone? They grow well. Then I planted some flowers, but they don’t seem to grow well. Some of the leaves have turned yellow. Woman: How often do you water the flowers? Man: I water them every day. Woman: Too much is as bad as too little. Some flowers don’t need to be watered so often. And consider the amount of sunlight each plant needs. I happen to have a book on how to grow different kinds of flowers. It’s a gift from a flower shop owner. I can lend it to you if you need. Man: Oh, that couldn’t be better. I think I’ll find the solution soon. Thanks, Emily. Text 10 Woman: I’ll share some exciting news that will add a touch of color to your school journey! 21. Which festival combines physical health with caring for children? A. Be a Kid Again Day. B. Helen Keller Day. C. National Go Barefoot Day. D. World Oceans Day. 22. Who benefit most from the organization A Kid Again? A. The young seeking adventures. B. Parents facing health challenges. C. The elderly treasuring childhood. D. Children fighting serious diseases. 23. What do the four festivals have in common? A. Environmental focus. B. Child-centered activities. C. Physical fitness promotion. D. Celebrations for social good. B Soon, you’re going to have to move out!” cried my neighbor upon seeing the largest tomato plant known to mankind, or at least known in my neighborhood. 25. The writer planted the tomato plant because______. A. there was room for it in the garden B. the soil was just right for it C. it cost only $1.25 D. the roses’branches needed to be covered 26. This year the writer’s roses were_______. A. removed from the rose bed B. largely hidden under the tomato plant C. mostly damaged by too much sunlight D. picked along with the tomatoes 27. By saying “the prize so dearly won” in Paragraph 5, the writer wants to_________. A. express her liking for the roses B. show the hardship of growing the roses C. show the difficulty in picking the tomatoes D. express her care for the tomatoes C A new study has found that some of the hottest heatwaves in history happened a long time ago and were not well known. 28. What can we expect about heatwaves in the future? A. They will decrease in amount. B. They will only affect certain regions. C. They will have no impact on global health. D. They will increase in degree over the coming century. 29. What does the underlined word “disasters” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Cuts in food production. B. Events resulting in great loss. C. Activities held by government. D. Something important to environment. 30. Why is it important to understand where the hottest heatwaves have happened? A. To predict where the next heatwave will happen. B. To find the connection between heatwaves and crop yields. C. To help take measures to protect the most vulnerable regions. D. To determine which countries need to reduce their greenhouse gas. 31. What can we know from paragraph 5? A. Climate change has had a great influence on health. B. The heatwaves outside of the developed world are always noticed. C. The death rate related to the climate change is expected to be lower. D. Developing countries are warned of the influences of climate change. D School uniform policies could be preventing young people from being active, particularly primary school-aged girls, new research suggests. What does the new research show? A. Fewer primary school-aged girls like physical activity. B. Fewer young people can meet the WHO recommended standards. C. School uniform policies could encourage young people to be more active. D. School uniform policies may be limiting the activity level of young people. 33. Which age group was found to be more influenced by the uniform policies? A. 5-to-10-year-old girls. B. 5-to-10-year-old boys. C. 11-to-17-year-old girls. D. 11-to-17-year-old boys. 34. What does Dr Ryan suggest schools do? A. Encourage students to wear comfortable clothes. B. Ban students from wearing uniforms completely. C. Require students to wear uniforms only in PE classes. D. Consider the design of uniforms when making decisions. 35. According to Dr Sluijs what causes girls to feel less confident in physical activities? A. The weather conditions. B. Type of activities they choose. C. Their clothes and social expectations. D. Their inability to do well in some sports. Sleep Struggle One in every five young people has a sleep problem, so you’re not alone.
