Y. — Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood — traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter. Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken. They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice. In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn. Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: “When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.” 4. Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains? A. To teach in a school. B. To study American history. C. To write a book. D. To do sightseeing. 5. What can we learn about the girls from paragraph 3? A. They enjoyed much respect. B. They had a room with a bathtub. C. They lived with the local kids. D. They suffered severe hardships. 6. Which part of Wickenden’s writing is hair-raising? A. The extreme climate of Auburn. B. The living conditions in Elkhead. C. The railroad building in the Rockies. D. The natural beauty of the West. 7. What is the text? A. A news report. B. A book review. C. A children’s story. D. A diary entry. C Efforts were underway in Bangladesh to deliver food and drinking water to millions of people struggling after a heavy rain led to flooding, which hit a quarter of the country. There are around 3.5 million Bangladeshis at risk of river flooding every year according to a 2015 report by the World Bank. On Wednesday, at least 17 of the country’s 64 districts (地区), mostly in the northern and north-eastern Sylhet, were suffering from the natural disaster. Government officials said at least 36 people had been killed and about 4.5 million people stuck so far. The floods also caused damage to agriculture (农业), electricity, and clean water supply. Sylhet is among the worst affected, with several areas without electricity. “Many people are in great need of food and drinking water,” said Enam Ahmed, 45, living in the worst-hit Sunmaganj district. “There is water everywhere but no drinking water. Flood shelters are filled with people but they are not getting enough food,” he said. The situation in Bangladesh has been worsened by rain water falling down from the surrounding hills of India’s Meghalaya state, which received more than 970 mm (38 inches) of rain on Sunday, according to a government report. “The flood situation in the three Barak valley districts continues to be very serious. Army rescuers have evacuated thousands of trapped people to safe places. 14 rescue teams with more than 70 boats and over 400 men have been pressed into action in the heavily flooded districts,” said a local flood control official. About 5.5 million people have been displaced, about 3.7 million of whom are staying in government-run temporary (临时的) shelters on higher ground. Locals in the flood-affected areas said they had never seen such serious floods before. 8. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The role played by government officials. B. The people frapped in the disaster. C. The number of districts in the country. D. The damage caused by the floods. 9. What do we know about the flood shelters? A. There is a crying need for food. B. They can provide enough clean water. C. They are too old to hold people. D. There are few villagers staying inside. 10. What does the underlined word “displaced” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Called on. B. Checked out. C. Moved away. D. Sent in. 11. What can we infer from the text? A. More rescue efforts are needed. B. The floods hit the whole country. C. The disaster is the biggest ever. D. Rivers nationwide are at risk. D Schoolchildren spend most of their time surrounded by their peers (同龄人). They spend a lot more time with classmates, teammates and fellow club members than with adults in their lives. Peer pressure can have a huge influence on the lives of children in grades two through twelve. From birth through age six, the family shapes a child’s sense of identity (个性). Parents and brothers and sisters affect (影响) a child’s likes, dislikes, tastes in clothing, food and music and, perhaps most importantly, values. Once children enter school, they form connections to the larger group of their peers. This group brings new ideas and experiences. Peer pressure happens when a student’s actions are influenced by this group. The “pressure” happens when peers suggest or demand actions different from the child’s normal behavior and values. Peer pressure leads to some disturbing negative (消极的) behavior in schoolchildren. In the USA, about 75% of high school students have tried alcohol (酒) offered by their friends in middle or high school. According to a survey, students felt pressured by their peers between 35 and 49% of the time. The power of peer pressure can result from a schoolchild’s growing desire to fit into a group. Thankfully, peer pressure can also be positive (积极的). For example, wanting to join an athletic group of friends may force a student who has been sitting for a long time to try out for the soccer team. In a survey on peer pressure, 51% of teenagers felt that peer pressure was sometimes positive. One teenager responded, “Sometimes it can help you gain confidence.” Other examples of positive peer pressure include students encouraging a classmate to run for school president, or friends suggesting that that a talented peer try out for a talent show. 12. What leads to schoolchildren’s peer pressure? A. The identity shaped by their family. B. The connections with their classmates. C. The childhood experiences with their friends. D. The differences in their behavior and values. 13. Why do some schoolchildren behave negatively under peer pressure? A. To kill their boring time. B. To fit into a peer group. C. To help gain confidence D. To improve social skills. 14. What does the author think of peer pressure? A. Peer pressure does more harm than good B. Peer pressure is very good for schoolchildren’s growth. C. Peer pressure is not necessarily bad for schoolchildren. D. Peer pressure plays an important role in shaping a child’s values. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Why schoolchildren turn out the way they do B. Ways to help schoolchildren deal with peer pressure C. Peer pressure highly influences schoolchildren D. How to improve schoolchildren’s behavior and values As teenage students, you may feel stressed in the holidays for many reasons. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me. One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl. I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.” “But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.” My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled. Paragraph 1 “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 After the play, I took home the flower. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 焦作一中2026级高一年级(上期) 英语月考试卷 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 注意,回答听力部分时,请先将答案标在试卷上。 1. A 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段“In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N.Y.-Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood -traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. (1916年,来自纽约奥本市的两个富裕家庭的女孩——Dorothy Woodruff和Rosamond Underwood——来到落基山脉的一个定居点,在一间只有一个房间的学校教书)”可知,Dorothy和Rosamond去落基山脉是为了去学校里教书。故选A项。 根据第三段“They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning.(他们和一个当地家庭,哈里森一家一起搬进去,和他们一样,几乎没有隐私,很少洗澡,早上醒来时被子上覆盖着一层雪)”以及“In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.(在春天,雪被泥替代覆盖在冰上)”可推知,女孩们的生活条件非常艰苦,她们的生活饱受磨难。 根据倒数第二段“A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms.(令人毛骨悚然的一段与铁路建设有关,这涉及到在令人眩目的暴风雪中钻穿落基山脉)”可知,Wickenden的作品中涉及落基山脉的铁路建设这一部分是令人毛骨悚然的。 根据倒数第二段“The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.(这本书以Rosamond和Dorothy回到奥本结束)”以及最后一段“Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism of the people move her to some beautiful writing.( Wickenden是个很好的讲故事的人。大地的辽阔和人们的坚忍使她创作出了一些美丽的作品)”可知,本文简要介绍了Wickenden的书籍内容,并对其进行了评价,所以文本是一篇书评。故选B项。 【点睛】 C Efforts were underway in Bangladesh to deliver food and drinking water to millions of people struggling after a heavy rain led to flooding, which hit a quarter of the country. D 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第二段“On Wednesday, at least 17 of the country’s 64 districts (地区), mostly in the northern and north-eastern Sylhet, were suffering from the natural disaster. Government officials said at least 36 people had been killed and about 4.5 million people stuck so far. The floods also caused damage to agriculture (农业), electricity, and clean water supply. (周三,该国64个区中,至少有17个区(大部分在北部和东北部锡莱特)遭受自然灾害。政府官员表示,到目前为止,至少有36人死亡,约450万人被困。洪水还破坏了农业、电力和清洁水供应。)”可知,这一段从受灾地区个数,死亡人数和农业等方面详细介绍了洪水带来的破坏。故选D项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段最后一句,灾民说的话“‘There is water everywhere but no drinking water. Flood shelters are filled with people but they are not getting enough food,’ he said. (他说:“到处都有水,但没有饮用水。洪水避难所里挤满了人,但他们得不到足够的食物。”)”可知,洪水避难所里缺乏食物,急需粮食。故选A项。 根据第五段最后一句后部分“about 3.7 million of whom are staying in government-run temporary (临时的) shelters on higher ground. (其中约370万人住在政府运营的高地临时避难所。)”可知,约370万人住在政府运营的高地临时避难所,相反还有一部分人则被转移,被迫离开家园,故可推测动词displace意为“转移离开家园”,与词组move away“搬到别处去”语义相似。故选C项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Locals in the flood-affected areas said they had never seen such serious floods before. (受洪水影响地区的当地人表示,他们以前从未见过如此严重的洪水。)”可知,这次洪水灾害是目前最严重的,即最大的。故选C项。 D Schoolchildren spend most of their time surrounded by their peers (同龄人). How to improve schoolchildren’s behavior and values 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. 根据第二段的“Peer pressure happens when a student’s actions are influenced by this group. The “pressure” happens when peers suggest or demand actions different from the child’s normal behavior and values.(当一个学生的行为受到这个群体的影响时,就会产生同伴压力。当同伴建议或要求孩子采取与正常行为和价值观不同的行动时,就会产生“压力”。)”可知,行为和价值观不同会导致学生的同伴压力。故选D。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段的“Peer pressure leads to some disturbing negative (消极的) behavior in schoolchildren.(同伴压力会导致学童出现一些令人不安的负面行为。)”和“According to a survey, students felt pressured by their peers between 35 and 49% of the time. The power of peer pressure can result from a schoolchild’s growing desire to fit into a group.(根据一项调查,学生们有35%到49%的时间感到来自同龄人的压力。同辈压力的力量可能来自学童越来越渴望融入一个群体。)”可知,渴望融入一个群体会让学童出现一些令人不安的负面行为。故选B。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第一段的“Thankfully, peer pressure can also be positive (积极的). For example, wanting to join an athletic group of friends may force a student who has been sitting for a long time to try out for the soccer team. (幸运的是,同伴的压力也可以是积极的。例如,想要加入一个运动团体的朋友,可能会迫使一个坐了很长时间的学生去参加足球队的选拔。)”以及下文的举例可推断,作者认为同伴压力也是积极的,也就是同伴压力不一定对学童有害处。故选C。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段的“Peer pressure leads to some disturbing negative (消极的) behavior in schoolchildren.(同辈压力会导致学童出现一些令人不安的负面行为。)”以及最后一段的“Thankfully, peer pressure can also be positive (积极的).( 幸运的是,同伴的压力也可以是积极的。)” As teenage students, you may feel stressed in the holidays for many reasons. I’d like to recommend rope skipping as a perfect exercise for class breaks. It requires only a rope and a small space, so we can do it easily in the corridor or on the playground. Ten minutes of skipping can quickly raise our heart rate and refresh our minds. Besides, it improves our coordination and builds up our strength. Most importantly, it is fun and can be done alone or with friends, which makes it easy to keep up. So let’s stand up and skip during breaks to stay healthy and energetic! Ten minutes of skipping can quickly raise our heart rate and refresh our minds. Ten minutes of skipping can quickly raise our heart rate and refresh our minds, which makes it an ideal way to recharge during class breaks. 【点睛】[高分句型1] Most importantly, it is fun and can be done alone or with friends, which makes it easy to keep up. I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1 “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. “You just haven’t been ready for the stage performance.” Seeing the sadness on my face soften a little, she added, “Why not take the narrator’s part as an opportunity to be familiar with the stage?” Her encouragement calmed me down gradually, and I began to accept the narrator’s part was of vital significance. Soon it was the big day. At first I was still nervous, but then I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm. Paragraph 2 After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily at me. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I often recall our walk in the yard. Her smile and her words of wisdom have stayed with me and shaped me into who I am now! And this is perhaps the best gift that I’ve ever received in my life. 做好准备:be ready for / make preparations for ②发现:find / spot ③凝视:gaze at / stare at 情绪类 ①让某人冷静下来:calm sb. down / cool sb. down ②紧张的:nervous / tense ③高兴地:happily / with delight 【点睛】[高分句型1]. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm. We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.
