Situation: A school radio host is interviewing Mr. Chen, a career counsellor, in the studio. They are talking about how teenagers can choose their future jobs.
Host: Good morning, Mr. Chen. Welcome to our programme “Future Careers”. Today, many teenagers are uncertain about what job they want to do in the future. Do you think this is a common problem?
Mr. Chen: ____________21____________ (对疑问句作出简要回答). Most students I meet share similar worries about choosing the right career path.
Host: I see. ____________22____________ (写出恰当的一般疑问句) to find out what job suits them best?
Mr. Chen: Yes, I think they should start by thinking about their interests and strengths. If you love helping people, you might become a doctor, a teacher or a fireman.
Host: Why are many teenagers very cautious when choosing a job?
Mr. Chen: They are cautious ____________23____________ (目的状语从句,表示为了不作出错误选择). But actually, it’s okay to change your mind. Many people try different jobs before finding the right one.
Host: And work experience is also helpful, I believe.
Mr. Chen: Exactly. Internships and part-time jobs can give teenagers a real taste of different professions.
Host: So having work experience really helps, ____________24____________ (写出反意疑问句)?
Mr. Chen: Absolutely. It helps them understand the requirements of different jobs and build useful skills.
Host: At the end of today’s interview, please give one final piece of advice to our young listeners. ____________25____________ (careers, should, prepare, how, for, their, they, future) (?) (连词成句)
Mr. Chen: The answer is to stay curious, keep learning, and never be afraid to ask questions. Every professional started as a beginner.
Host: How valuable the advice is! Thank you for sharing your insights, Mr. Chen.
Mr. Chen: My pleasure.
Part 3 Reading and Writing (第三部分读写)
V. Reading comprehension (阅读理解) (共60分)
A. (12分)
Read the passage and complete the task(根据以下内容完成任务)。
Our concerns
Tom: I feel shy when meeting new people. During breaks, I often stay by myself, even though I really wish I could join others. I just don’t know how to start a conversation.
Mia: Sometimes I speak too quickly without thinking and end up hurting others’ feelings. I always regret it later but find it really hard to say sorry properly.
Alex: I’ve been getting more pimples recently, and it really bothers me. I feel like everyone is staring at my face, and I’ve even started avoiding photos and social gatherings because of it.
Daniel: Whenever I have a big test, I get so nervous that my mind goes blank or my heart races. I know the material when I study, but during the exam, I just panic and forget everything.
Emma: My teacher seems very serious and busy all the time. I’m worried that if I ask for help, I might bother him. So, I usually stay quiet even when I don’t understand something in class.
Our suggestions
A. Before you speak, try taking a moment to think. If you do hurt someone, a sincere and specific apology like “I’m sorry I said that” or “That was thoughtless of me” can make a big difference.
B. Skin issues are very common during teenage years. Instead of avoiding social situations, try following a healthy skincare routine and remind yourself that people focus far less on your skin than on who you are.
C. Joining a study group or a club is a great way to make friends and learn from others. You are likely to find students with common interests there.
D. Practise deep breathing exercises before the test to calm your nerves. Also, keep in mind that it’s okay to skip a question and come back to it later.
E. Teachers are usually happy to help students who show they want to learn. Try asking your question after class, starting with, “Could I please ask for a quick explanation of…?” This shows you value their time.
F. Start small. You don’t need a long conversation. Just a “hello,” or a simple question like “Did you enjoy today’s activity?” can be a great first step.
Task 1: Match the suggestions with the concerns.
26. Tom: ____________
27. Mia: ____________
28. Alex: ____________
29. Daniel: ____________
30. Emma: ____________
Task 2: Choose the best answer.
31. Which section of the school newspaper is this content most likely from?
A. Campus News & Events B. Sports & Competitions
C. Counsellor’s Corner D. Learning Zone
B. Choose the best answer. (根据以下内容, 选择最恰当的答案) (12分)
Feeling positive is not always easy or helpful. Sometimes, people try to be positive all the time, even when someone is sad or upset. This is called toxic positivity. It happens when people are told to ignore their negative feelings and only think about good things. A survey was done at Ashton Secondary School in July, including 500 students aged 12—18. The students were asked about their experience with toxic positivity. They were also asked which statements were most comforting when they felt sad.
The survey found that many students did not feel better when others told them to “look on the bright side” or “other people have it worse”. These statements often make students feel guilty or ignored. For example, Charlie, 12, said that when his pet dog died, someone told him to cheer up. This made him feel worse because he thought he should not be sad. Iris, 18, said that when friends told her to focus on the good things in her life after failing an important exam, it did not help. She felt that people did not understand her sadness.
About 42% of students experienced toxic positivity once in the past year. Another 31% said they experienced it more than once, while 27% said they did not experience it at all. Many students said that these “positive” messages were not useful when they were facing problems. Instead, they appreciated statements that accepted their feelings, such as “That must be really hard.”, “I’m here if you need to talk.” and “Is there anything I can do to help?”
The survey shows that listening and understanding are more important than always trying to make someone feel better. People need to be allowed to feel sad or angry. Supportive words that respect emotions help students feel understood and less alone. In conclusion, toxic positivity can be harmful. True support comes from listening, empathy and kindness, not from forcing someone to be happy.
32. In the text, “toxic positivity” is described as telling people to ________.
A. encourage themselves to stay cheerful even when upset
B. share negative feelings and ask others for advice
C. focus on happy thoughts and ignore how they really feel
D. accept sad feelings and focus on good things
33. According to the survey, which response is the most comforting?
A. That must be really hard. B. Look on the bright side.
C. You are lucky. Stop thinking about it D. Cheer up. Everything will be fine soon.
34. How did Charlie feel when someone told him to “cheer up” after his dog died?
A. It made him feel ignored, as if his sadness did not matter.
B. He felt worse, because he thought he should not be sad.
C. He tried to calm down and stop thinking about it.
D. The words gave him hope that he would feel better soon.
35. Which of the following pie chart shows the survey result?
A. B.
C. D.
36. Which of the following works best for someone feeling sad?
A. Advice, rules and strong control. B. Silence, time and being alone.
C. Jokes, gifts and good news. D. Attention, understanding and kindness.
37. What is the writer’s attitude towards toxic positivity?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
C. Negative. D. Uncertain.

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
—To Kill a Mockingbird
“A young girl didn’t give up her seat to an old man on a bus.” Ms. Whitehead was asking her students what they thought about it in her first Philosophy class. Most of the students thought the girl’s behavior was ____38____.
Ms. Whitehead didn’t express her opinion, instead, she told another story. “It was about a loving couple who were travelling on a ship. ____39____, they met with a storm and the ship was going to sink, and ____40____ of the couple could have the chance to get on the lifeboat. To all passengers’ surprise, the husband left his wife behind and got on the lifeboat himself.”
The teacher stopped and asked, “How would you feel if you were one of the passengers?”
Shortly after, ____41____ Ms. Whitehead. “The husband survived and returned home. He didn’t marry others but ____42____ their daughter alone after the worst day. Thirty years later, the daughter learned about what happened on the ship by accident. She really wanted an ____43____ from father. Her question in her heart wasn’t answered until she ____44____ find it out in his diary after her father died. The whole story is, on that day, her father and mother were on the trip to finish her ____45____ wish because she was dying of an incurable illness. As a husband, he wished to go with his wife. Yes, the great husband is my father.”
The class dropped into ____46____ as Ms. Whitehead finished her story. She didn’t think any word was ____47____ and was sure that all the students should have been rethinking about their careless replies. Seeing is not always believing. More than one in three UK teenagers are worried that artificial intelligence (AI) may take their jobs in the future, according to a new survey by BBC Bitesize. The Bitesize Careers Survey 2026 surveyed over 4,500 students aged 13 to 16 across the United Kingdom. It found that 36% of them worry that machine work could take away jobs in their chosen areas. Another 37% believe AI will cut down the number of jobs open to people in the future.
However, there is an interesting paradox (自相矛盾的情况). Although many young people fear AI, they are also ready to use it to help themselves. Two-thirds of the teenagers said they would use AI to improve their chances of getting a job. This shows a growing difference between their worry and their confidence in using new technology.
The survey also looked at what jobs teenagers want when they grow up. Traditional careers remain the most popular choices. The doctor continues to top the list, followed by the engineer and teacher. Other jobs such as the animal doctor, police officer and lawyer also sit high on the list. As for the groups they would most like to work for, the NHS (the UK’s public health service) came out ahead of big tech companies like Google and Apple.
Cerys Griffiths, Head of BBC Bitesize, said, “It’s clear that young people are curious about AI, but they also have serious worries about how it could influence their futures.” To deal with this, BBC Bitesize has created a “Free Guide to AI”. The guide helps 14-to-19-year-olds understand how AI works, how it is already being used in real jobs, and how to use it safely and in a correct way. It focuses on real-world examples across industries including health, fashion, gaming and sport.
Task 1:

A challenge I’ve faced
Growing up, we meet many challenges.
Last year, I faced a big challenge—public speaking. I was too shy to speak in front of others. To overcome it, I practiced speaking in front of a mirror every day. I also asked my English teacher for some useful advice. Finally, I gave a speech successfully in class.
From this experience, I learned that confidence comes from hard practice. I have become much braver now.
