C How to See Deer is the title of Zhou Weiˈs book. But she doesnˈt provide any clues on how to spot the animal. What her newly published book does do is remind city dwellers of the beauty of nature. Different from other nature writings, which usually depict the wilderness of one place, Zhouˈs book has a strong consciousness of “places”. Visiting a local farm, hiking with a birdwatching group and studying plants in the backyard are just some of the 50 stories Zhou recounts in her book, which details her encounters with nature during her time living in Mount Vernon (Washington State), Beijing and Reno (Nevada) in the past decade. Zhou picked the title of the book from American poet Philip Boothˈs poem of the same name. “The word ‘deerˈ should not be taken too literally, as it symbolizes all things beautiful and elusive in nature, or an epiphanic moment in nature, a sudden realization of truth and beauty,” Zhou says. Zhou was in an exchange program and taught Chinese at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, Washington State. It was during that year that she started writing about nature. She recorded her experiences during her yearlong stay in the US, including her encounters with nature. She wrote about learning the name of new trees and flowers, spotting a trumpeter swan, and observing a cottontail rabbit in her backyard. “Almost every day there were some exciting encounters with nature,” Zhou recalls. She visited Walden Pond like a pilgrim, and she also concluded her book with an independent chapter dedicated to “Thoreau and his Walden Pond”. As a lover of nature, however, Zhou doesnˈt deny city life, and she thinks cities shouldnˈt be seen as opposite to nature. “I still remember when I was traveling in Hong Kong, I found a nice, quiet urban park amid the busiest streets and took a walk there. It was a very refreshing walk.”   “Human beings wonˈt go anywhere if they donˈt know when to stop and leave the wild creatures alone. We have occupied wildlife habitats too far,” she says. 28.In her book, Zhou ______. A. tells us how to see deer B. depicts the wilderness of places C. tells 50 stories about her encounters with nature D. represents a beautiful life in the countryside 29.According to the location of where the stories take place, the correct order should be ______. A. Mount Vernon, Beijing, Reno and Walden Pond B. Beijing, Mount Vernon, Reno and Walden Pond C. Reno, Walden Pond, Beijing and Mount Vernon D. Reno, Mount Vernon, Walden Pond and Beijing 30.The underlined word “epiphanic” in the 4th paragraph probably means “______”. A. difficult to find B. exciting and wonderful C. surprise and moved D. a sudden realization of truth and beauty 31.Through her encounters with nature, the author wants to tell us ______. A. nature has gone B. city life is boring C. the beautiful nature and its stories behind it, including man and nature D. to leave the wild creatures alone D Now many young people are travelling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone. Kristina Wegscheider from California first travelled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents. In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own. Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go travelling last year. He set up a website to document his adventures. He says he wished he had travelled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30-year-old man. Richardson describes travelling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said, “The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when Iˈm dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.” The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.” 32.Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with? () A. Travelling alone is a necessary experience for everyone. B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries. C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend. D. Travelling abroad helps people find new things. 33.Why is travelling alone challenging? () A. It will finally build your character. B. You have to make things on your own. C. It is hard for you to prove yourself to others. D. You can only depend on yourself whatever happens. 34.What can we infer about Chris Richardson? () A. He started travelling alone at an early age. B. He used to work as a salesman. C. He was once shot in the arm. D. His website inspires others a lot. 35.What is the best title for the passage? () A. Travel Abroad B. Travel Light C. Travel Alone D. It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother-loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven which tells us a lot about her.     My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd     ever see them again! Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.     David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: "You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I will stand outside the door and play lookout while you go." I had terrible pictures in my mind: "Honey, where are the kids?" "What?! Oh, Gosh I thought they were being awfully quiet." We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.     On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and asked if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town. Paragraph I     The next day we remembered the brand new(崭新) tent we brought with us.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Paragraph 2     We drove through several states and saw lots of sights along the way. The next day we remembered the brand new(崭新) tent we brought with us, we were happy to see it all still packed and hoped it would be packed forever. However, things came to its turning point. Mom lost Dad in the gas station when we were sleeping. What's more, as the dark approached, we met the same trouble again. Fearful as Mom was, she decided to camp near the road waiting for Dad. The wind cried widely like a monster. Tears took control of us. Mom embraced us tightly singing a smooth song, which really relaxed us. We didn't meet Dad in the last few days, but we felt comfortable staying with Mom     We drove through several states and saw lots of sights along the way. The tent became a close friend then.
