The Ten-yuan Treasure
On a cold Saturday morning, 14-year-old Mei stood at the gate of the city's flea market (跳蚤市场). She had only ten yuan in her pocket. Her mother's birthday was coming, and Mei wanted to buy a gift of her own money.
"Ten yuan can't buy anything good," her brother said. But Mei didn't give up. She walked from one stall (摊位) to another. Most things were far too expensive: 80 yuan for an old watch, 150 yuan for a set of cups.
Then she saw a small table in the corner. On it lay a dusty wooden box. "How much is this?" she asked.
"Ten yuan," said an old man. "My father made it sixty years ago. He was a carpenter (木匠). Look inside."
Mei opened the box. There was nothing in it, but on the bottom were four small words: "Save for someone else."
"Why do you sell it?" Mei asked.
"Because it should belong to someone young," the old man smiled. "My father made it for me when I was your age. I saved coins in it for two years and bought my mother a pair of glasses."
Mei paid her ten yuan and ran home. She put the box on her desk. Every week she dropped a coin or two into it. Six months later, she took out the money and bought her mother a warm scarf. Needs and Wants: A Survey on Teenagers' Pocket Money
Last month, we asked 500 students from eight middle schools in Tianjin about their pocket money. Here is what we found.
Where does the money go?
Percentage ( 百分比 )
Snacks and drinks
38%
Games and online stickers
24%
Books and magazines
17%
Savings
13%
Gifts for family and friends
8%
More than half of the students said they often bought things they didn't really need. "I saw it online, and everyone had one, so I bought it," a 14-year-old boy wrote. "Two weeks later, it was at the bottom of my drawer."
Experts say this is quite common. Teenagers are not born with the ability to manage money; they learn it by practising. Here are three easy ways to start.
First, write down everything you spend for one month. Most people are amazed at how much goes on snacks.
Second, before you buy something, ask yourself: "Do I need it, or do I just want it?" Needs are things you cannot live without, like school things. Wants are things that would be nice to have.
Third, keep two moneyboxes — one for spending, one for saving. Even five yuan a week becomes 260 yuan a year.
"I used to spend all my money in three days," said Lin Tao, a Grade 9 student. "Now I save up for something big, like a ticket to the museum exhibition. Waiting makes the thing much nicer."
56.According to the survey, what do students spend most of their pocket money on?
A.Books and magazines. B.Snacks and drinks.
C.Games and online stickers. D.Savings.
57.How much of the pocket money do the students save?
A.8%. B.17%. C.13%. D.24%.
58.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The thing he bought. B.The money.
C.The survey. D.The drawer.
59.Which of the following is a "need" according to the passage?
A.A new computer game. B.A pencil case.
C.Online stickers. D.A pair of fashionable shoes.
60.What is the writer's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To ask schools to give students more pocket money.
B.To tell parents not to give money to their children.
C.To help teenagers learn to manage money.
D.To show that snacks are bad for teenagers' health.

A Day at the Museum — Li Hua's Diary
Saturday, 18 October Cloudy
Today was the first day of my volunteer work at the City Museum, and I'll never forget it.
At 8:20 I arrived at the museum. Ms Wang, the guide, gave me a red jacket and said, "You'll be in No. 2 Hall. The bronze masks are there." My job was to answer visitors' questions and keep the hall quiet.
At first I was too nervous to speak. Then a little girl came up to me. "Excuse me," she said, "how old are these masks?" I took a breath and said, "They date back to more than 3,000 years ago." She smiled and said, "Thank you, sister!" That smile gave me courage.
At 10:30 a group of foreign guests came in. I was worried, but I said "Welcome to the City Museum" in English. They were amazed and asked me to take a photo with them. One of them said my English was clear.
The happiest moment came at 11:00. An old man looked at a piece of old silk for a long time and said to me, "My mother made things like this. Thank you for keeping them safe." I suddenly understood why the museum needs young volunteers: we are not just protecting old things, we are passing stories on.
On the bus home, I wrote in my notebook: "Old things are not dead. They are waiting for someone young to listen."

Hello, everyone. I'm Li Mei, a student from No. 8 Middle School. I'm also a weekend volunteer at the City Museum. Let me tell you about my work there.
The museum is famous for its collection of bronze masks. Some of them date back to more than 3,000 years ago. My job is to stand beside the glass box and answer visitors' questions. At first, I was too shy to speak. But my teacher told me, "Unless you try, you'll never know how good you can be." So I practised at home every evening.
Now I can speak so clearly that even the guests from other countries understand me. I also tell them stories about the ancient kingdom and the Silk Road. Last month, an archaeologist came to our museum. She discovered some new remains in the northwest of our city. I listened to her talk and took notes carefully.
I don't earn any money from this work, but I've got something more valuable than wealth — knowledge and courage.

Boys and girls, may I have your attention, please? Here is a notice about our School Culture Week.
It will start on Monday, the 12th of October, and last for five days. This year's topic is "Old Things, New Stories". You can bring an old thing from your family — a photo, a toy, or a piece of clothing — and tell its story in English.
There will also be a talk by Mr Chen, an archaeologist from the City Museum. He will show us pictures of ancient relics and explain how people lived 2,000 years ago. The talk begins at half past three on Wednesday afternoon in the school hall.
If you want to take part, please write your name and class on the list in the teachers' office before Friday. And remember: bring your own old things, and don't waste money buying new ones.

【参考范文】
There is an old thing in my home — my grandpa's wooden moneybox. It dates back to more than fifty years ago. Grandpa bought it when he was a student, and he saved coins in it for two years. With that money, he bought his mother a warm scarf.
Last year, Grandpa gave it to me. "Wait for what you really need," he said. I started to save my pocket money in it every week. Half a year later, I bought a second-hand camera with the money and took photos of the old streets in our city.
The old box teaches me a lot. I learn to value what I have and not to waste money on things I don't need. Old things are not old at all — they pass stories on from one generation to another.
