Dear fellow students,
Good morning! It’s a great honour to deliver a speech about protecting wild animals. At present, the situation of wild animals is extremely worrying. Their habitats are being continuously destroyed due to human activities like deforestation and urban expansion. Besides, illegal hunting for profit remains a serious threat, pushing many species to the verge of extinction.
To change this, we can take practical steps. First, we should advocate for the use of sustainable products to reduce the damage to their habitats. Second, spread awareness of wildlife protection among our friends and family can make a difference. Let’s work together to safeguard these precious creatures.
Thank you!
67.One possible version:
Seconds later, the driver of the dark blue car angrily walked towards me. I got out of the car and stood in front of it, frightened and regretful. My heart raced, and guilt overwhelmed me as I realised the consequences of my decision. At that moment, I wished I had listened to my mum’s advice. “You should have been more careful while driving! You’re lucky no one got hurt. But my car is in bad shape...” the driver shouted. As I stood there, facing the consequences of my choice, my mum arrived.
Instead of checking the damage to the car, Mum carefully examined my body. It was at that moment that I understood the depth of a mother’s love. Our eyes met, and in hers, I saw a mix of worry, relief and unconditional love. “I’m very sorry. We take full responsibility for this accident. We can get your car fixed,” my mum apologized sincerely. The accident marked a turning point in our relationship. From that day on, I began to appreciate my mother’s guidance and care in a new light.

Elephant transit Home
In both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats. People are moving into the elephants’ habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called the Elephant transit Home (ETH).
Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and nurture baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. As many as possible are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd (象群).
A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. Then the elephants are allowed to walk around, eating the grass and forming a herd. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants.
At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connection with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.
The ETH is considered one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.
21.What does the underlined word “nurture” in Paragraph 2 mean?

Researchers from the University of Cambridge studied an unusual behaviour among Gibraltar’s macaques (猕猴): the monkeys have been regularly eating soil. They wanted to know whether this behaviour, known as geophagy, was connected with the junk food the animals got from tourists, and whether it was socially learned.
Gibraltar offered a useful natural experiment. Its macaques live in several groups across the Rock, some around crowded viewpoints (观察点) and others on quieter slopes (斜坡). This uneven proximity to visitors allowed researchers to compare groups with different chances of obtaining human food. Although feeding the monkeys is forbidden, tourists often offer snacks, and the animals also steal food such as chocolate and ice cream. Researchers recorded when and where the macaques ate soil, what kind of soil they chose and whether other macaques were present.
The data showed a clear pattern. Groups that spent more time around tourists consumed more human food and showed higher rates of geophagy. The three groups living near the top of the Rock, where visitor contact is the greatest, accounted for most soil-eating incidents. In winter, when the monkeys were less likely to obtain tourist food, geophagy also fell. These comparisons strengthened the link between junk food and soil-eating.
The researchers then considered why soil might help. Tourist snacks are high in sugar, salt, fat and dairy, but low in the fiber found in the macaques’ usual foods, such as leaves, seeds and insects. Soil may reduce the effects of this diet by providing minerals and helpful bacteria, or by forming a protective layer in the digestive system. Since pregnant and nursing females did not eat more soil than others, the behaviour was unlikely to be mainly about getting extra nutrients.
The study also suggested a cultural side to the behaviour. Many soil-eating events happened when other macaques were watching, and different groups showed different soil preferences. Most chose red clay, while one group repeatedly selected soil from holes in the road. For the researchers, this shows how a human-shaped environment can change not only what macaques eat, but also how new local traditions may form.
28.What does the underlined word “proximity” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Closeness. B.Response. C.Attraction. D.Resistance.
29.Which macaques are most likely to engage in geophagy?
A.Those living on quieter slopes. B.Those belonging to larger groups.
C.Those following their natural diet. D.Those consuming more tourist food.
30.What did researchers find about pregnant and nursing female macaques?
A.They showed no stronger desire for soil. B.They were less likely to eat tourist food.
C.They relied more on soil for extra minerals. D.They needed more nutrients than other macaques.
31.What is the major finding of the study?
A.Social learning depends on the size of groups.
B.Human influence may shape macaques’ habits.
C.Soil-eating helps macaques digest their natural foods.
D.Tourist feeding can reduce geophagy in the long term.

A monarch butterfly landed on the palm of my open hand. I put my hand high above my head. The butterfly took off, flying into the sky and disappearing.
That moment was in 1993. It was the first time I had ever tagged a butterfly. I got hooked. Over the years, I observed its change from egg to adult. I watched with eyes wide when the caterpillar would start to shed its skin and show its inner green body. My passion for science inspired by these small insects continued to Kenyon College in Ohio. There I was one of the few girls who majored in biology.
I got involved in a long-term program fueled by generations of energetic volunteers. They tagged monarchs, monitored their migration south, and helped to give lectures at the local state park. It helped show patterns in monarch migration. Monitoring monarchs in the same location, year after year, allowed us to associate climate change with increasing delayed migrations, which had put the monarchs at risk.
In another program, we visited a monarch reserve in March 2007. There, we tagged more than 3,000 monarchs, talked to hundreds of interested visitors, and witnessed the amazing movement of monarchs. It was a transformational experience. More and more visitors came every spring. The monarchs bring in thousands of tourists each year, helping the local economy and providing new ideas to protect the remaining forest.
Monarch butterflies, and science programs supporting them, helped draw me into science over 20 years ago. Other projects like Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count have also inspired other young students to embark on careers in science. Engaging in any manner of projects, like monitoring sea level rise, contributes to science and helps get students of any age outdoors. Remember: science isn’t just for scientists.
32.What motivated the author to study biology in the college?
A.Playing a butterfly game. B.The monarch’s migration.
C.Her interest in butterflies. D.Feeding monarchs at home.
33.What might be a cause of monarch’s delayed migrations?
A.Loss of forests. B.Lack of food sources.
C.Climate change. D.Tourism development.
34.What does the author think of their visit to the monarch reserve in 2007?
A.Well-organized. B.Rewarding. C.Laborious. D.Boring.
35.Why does the author mention Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count?
A.To show who are real scientists. B.To prove her predictions.
C.To advocate animal protection. D.To show its inspiring effect.

We all know that our dogs have feelings, and that they can be happy or sad. But, do dogs actually cry real tears when they get sad? Dogs are highly sensitive pets, and they experience a variety of emotions, just like humans. 36 They might just have watery eyes. As far as scientists know, humans are the only species that cry for emotional reasons.
Dogs do “cry” when they’re sad. However, dogs use voices to express feelings rather than having watery eyes. They begin doing this at a young age by crying out for their moms when in trouble. 37 As they get older, dogs may continue this whining (哀鸣) when sad.
Once they have matured, dogs consider their human owners to be the pack leader, or mother figure, and will direct their whining or crying towards them. Many specialists believe dogs suffering from separation anxiety will whine for their mothers. 38
39 They can also be sad, in pain or attempting to let you know that they’re feeling uncomfortable or want something. Also, dogs may howl (嗥叫) occasionally, which is just another form of “crying”. In fact, many experts believe that howling is a dog’s ultimate expression of sadness.
If dogs don’t produce emotional tears, why do they tear up at all? Studies show there is oftentimes a medical reason behind dogs having tears. 40 A dog’s tear ducts (泪管) work somewhat differently. For dogs, the tears or liquid will flow back into the throat and nose rather than from the eyes.
A.This is because dogs are social animals.
B.However, no science proves dogs cry for sadness.
C.Separation anxiety isn’t the only cause of dogs whining.
D.Similarly, when sad, they go to their parent-like person.
E.Virtually, that may be a sign of a serious health condition.
F.The reasons for dogs crying or howling are exactly the same.
G.They learn to make distinct sounds that can be recognized instantly.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At the age of eighteen, I grew to be a rebellious (叛逆的) person. Usually, my mother asked me to behave in a way that she thought acceptable. However, I often turned a deaf ear to her words.
“This room has become one for pigs!” she angrily said. “Clean it up, or you can’t go out with your friends!” But it looked okay to me. There were only a few clothes and something else on the floor. And it would only take five minutes to pick them up. Why did she have to be always anxious and angry?
Our relationship became worse when Mum began to criticize (批评) me for not listening to her. And I started to think she was too strict and didn’t love me.
A few months before I left for college, one accident made me realize how wrong I was.
“Dear, I don’t want you to drive the car today; it’s going to rain and you might lose control of the car,” she told me early on a spring Saturday morning. My heart sank. I had planned this trip to the shopping centre all week. “She’s naturally anxious again,” I thought.
In my mind, the idea that Mum was unreasonably anxious excused my next action. I secretly walked out of the house and slipped into the car. I slowly drove away from our house. When I lost sight of the house, I drove quickly away from my unreasonably worried Mum. “I’m free!” I thought.
Of course, the chances of having a car accident increase rapidly when you don’t have your mum’s permission (允许) to drive the car in the first place. I didn’t see the dark blue car coming as I turned in front of it in the mall parking lot. Luckily, the dark blue car suffered little damage (损伤) and I only had minor injuries.

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Elephant transit Home

23.The workers reduce human connection with the elephants to ______.
A.train them to stay away from hunters
B.provide them with more living space

24.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To show the ways of wildlife protection.
B.To explain the threat baby elephants face.
C.To introduce an animal protection project.
D.To persuade the readers to protect elephants.

Welcome to the museum tour. Please allow me to express a warm welcome and I’m honored to show you around. First I will go over the map with you in the hall in case you get lost. Do not worry if you get lost. You can ask one of our staff members for directions. After we get out of the hall, our first stop will be the Egyptian section. This one has our oldest art in it. Next, I will take you to the Asian art and ancient objects on the left. This is my favorite section, because each piece has a wonderful story. The tour’s last part will be the European section. We have borrowed some of those items from the National Museum! The first thing you should notice is the writing below each piece. I will speak about most things, but you can also check the information there. No photo is to be taken here, so please turn off your cameras. Most importantly, please do not touch any of the art! The oil on your hands will damage these ancient objects!

【答案】28.A 29.D 30.A 31.B
根据第二段“Gibraltar offered a useful natural experiment. Its macaques live in several groups across the Rock, some around crowded viewpoints (观察点) and others on quieter slopes (斜坡).(直布罗陀提供了一个有用的自然实验。其猕猴生活在直布罗陀巨岩上的多个群体中,有些位于人流量较大的观景点附近,另一些则分布在较为安静的斜坡上)”可知,猴子离游客远近不同,获取人类食物机会不一样,故划线词意思是“接近”。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Groups that spent more time around tourists consumed more human food and showed higher rates of geophagy.(在游客周围停留时间更长的群体消耗了更多的人类食物,并表现出更高的食土行为发生率)”可知,那些食用更多游客食物的猕猴最有可能进行地食行为。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段“Since pregnant and nursing females did not eat more soil than others, the behaviour was unlikely to be mainly about getting extra nutrients.(由于怀孕和哺乳期的雌性动物与其他个体相比并未摄入更多的土壤,因此这种行为不太可能是为了获取额外营养)”可知,研究人员发现怀孕和哺乳期的雌性猕猴对土壤没有更强的欲望。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“For the researchers, this shows how a human-shaped environment can change not only what macaques eat, but also how new local traditions may form.(对研究人员而言,这表明人为塑造的环境不仅会影响猕猴的饮食,还可能改变新的地方传统的形成方式)”可知,这项研究的主要发现是人类活动可能影响猕猴的行为习惯。

第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Seconds later, the driver of the dark blue car angrily walked towards me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Instead of checking the damage to the car, Mum carefully examined my body.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
