Just 25 years ago, the top three career hopes for young people in Britain were teachers, bankers and doctors. Now, they want to be sports stars, pop stars and actors, according to a survey by The Guardian.
Rachel, a character in the popular TV show Glee, may be said to speak for British teenagers. “Nowadays being nobody is worse than being poor,” she said.
Emma Brockes, a reporter with The Guardian, believes it is “the bad influence of celebrity (名人) culture” that is to blame. “When children wanted to be a doctor, it wasn’t because they were really more interested in the functions of human organs than they are now; they go where the respect is,” she wrote.
It could explain why there has been such an increase in levels of anxiety and depression. Dr Carlo Strenger, at Tel Aviv University, studied the sense of self for his new book The Fear of Insignificance: Searching for Meaning in the 21st Century. He told the Daily Mail that young people now are “affected by the close connection to the global entertainment network, which has turned ranking and rating people according to wealth and celebrity into an obsession (痴迷)”.
“As humans, we naturally measure ourselves to those around us, but now we live in a global village. We are comparing ourselves with the most ‘important’ people in the world and finding ourselves unwanted,” he said.
Today, even high achievers constantly fear that they are insignificant when they compare themselves to success stories in the media.
The way out? Simply stop measuring your achievement through a fantasy of wealth and celebrity. Dr Strenger said that it is a process called “active self-acceptance through a constant search for self-knowledge through life”.
“The fear of insignificance can only be overcome through strong individual and cultural identity over and above measurable achievement,” he said.
32.Nowadays, young people in Britain have different career hopes because they want to_____________.
A.choose jobs based on interest
B.become famous
C.be teachers, bankers and doctors
D.earn more money
33.According to Emma Brockes, what causes the increasing level of anxiety?
A.Choices of future careers.
B.Access to the global network.
C.Bad influences of celebrities.
D.Endless comparison with others.
34.Which of the following is TRUE about Dr Carlo Strenger?
A.He is a newspaper reporter.
B.He is a spokesman for teenagers.
C.He tells success stories on TV.
D.He is against ranking people with wealth.
35.Dr Carlo Strenger suggests that young people should_________.
A.seek active self-acceptance
B.stick to their own dreams
C.make great achievements
D.search for the secret of wealth

Dear Leslie,
I’m so glad to hear from you! You asked about the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It usually falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is believed to be the fullest and brightest. During this festival, families gather together to enjoy a big dinner and admire the beautiful full moon. Eating mooncakes is also a must-do tradition.
Culturally, the round moon and mooncakes symbolize family reunion and harmony. It’s a wonderful time for people to express their love and missing for distant family members.
Hope you can experience it someday!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【解析】
【原文】W: On May 27th, 2021, my family visited the Lake Eyasi area. No bus or train could take us there, so we drove all the way there. The Hadzapi are one of the few remaining traditional hunter gatherer groups left in the world. When you visit them, they are not putting on a show. This is the real thing! We went to that area mainly because we were curious about how this group live. First we picked up a guide in a nearby village. Researchers from around the world visit and study the Hadzapi, and our guide went with them in the past and spent 6 months living with the bushmen. So this guide was familiar with the group and their language. When you visit the Hadzapi, you observe them as they go about their daily lives. They hunt daily using traditional hunting tools. They make fire by rubbing sticks together. In the dry season they don’t bother building huts to live in. They live the way I imagine people lived thousands of years ago. Watching them live was truly an amazing experience.
