My parents, who had high hopes for me as the eldest son, were enthusiastic about my language learning. They gave me a new dictionary at each important stage.
My first dictionary was a children’s book in my mother tongue. Father bought it when I was five, thinking I would use it. But I was too lazy to look up new words. I either guessed their meanings or asked my parents. I only enjoyed flipping (翻阅) through its pages for the fresh smell of paper.
My second was a beginner’s English dictionary with a blue cover. I liked it so much that I actually tried to use it, and soon learned how to find words quickly.
A few years later, Mother gave me a thicker dictionary with a brown cover. I promised to make good use of it, but I didn’t. At that time, I only read textbook articles, and Mother sat beside me to explain new words. Occasionally, I picked up the dictionary out of guilt, but I usually relied on my mother to explain to me.
When I was eleven, I started reading the Harry Potter series. I read the first three books in my mother tongue, but the fourth book was not translated quickly enough. One day, I picked up the English copy. It was extremely slow and difficult; I had to stop frequently to ask my parents about unfamiliar words. A single page sometimes took me ten minutes. But soon my questions became too many. And my parents had to go to work.
That was when I turned to my dictionary — for the first time, with real purpose. I got my Longman and carried it everywhere. I consulted it like a close friend. The more I used it, the more words I remembered. By the end of the book, my dictionary was worn out, but my vocabulary had grown beyond my expectations. I realized that the right tool, used with intention, could make all the difference.
24.How did the author deal with his first dictionary?
A.He threw it away. B.He used it every day.
C.He turned pages for smell. D.He found it very hard.
25.Why did the author fail to use the third dictionary properly?
A.He had an e-dictionary. B.He disliked its cover.
C.He only read textbooks. D.He tended to ask his mother.
26.What can we infer about the author’s dictionary-using?
A.It improves with real need. B.It is highly enjoyable.
C.It works without effort. D.It amounts to asking parents.
27.What message does the author convey at the end of the text?
A.A good dictionary is a lifelong friend. B.Parental guidance is always necessary.
C.Children should read challenging books. D.Motivation determines tool effectiveness.

Shortly after sunrise, the students of Barrio San Luis begin their school run. A dozen girls and boys, wearing backpacks, jump down the muddy river bank and into the boat that provides their daily transport.
Their highway is the Rio Wichimi, a river lined with towering, parrot-filled trees. It winds through the Ecuadorian Amazon. And the fuel that powers their boat is the fierce (猛烈的) tropical sun.
Since 2016, the native Achuar people have travelled in solar-powered boats along the Amazonian waters of eastern Ecuador for trading, city tasks, monitoring illegal loggers and studying at school.
The project, set up by the nonprofit Kara Solar, shows sustainable infrastructure (基础设施) development in the rapidly disappearing Amazon rainforest.
Over the years, Ecuador has lost about 2.3 million acres of tree cover, or 5% of its total, according to Global Forest Watch. Road construction plays a significant role in that deforestation, both directly and indirectly: A study of 332 native lands in the Amazon found for every mile of road built, about 14 acres of forest are lost.
To minimize that destruction, Kara Solar invests in what it describes as the “ancestral highways” of the rainforest: rivers. By pairing nature’s pre-built infrastructure with solar energy, it aims to improve community livelihoods with minimal environmental impact.
Getting residents’ buy-in has been crucial for Kara Solar. The project began with a decade of discussions with Achuar communities before the first solar boat set sail and has been gaining favour since.
“Every single day I was driving the boat, everyone was asking me for help,” says Luciano, a 27-year-old Achuar boat operator trained by Kara Solar. “They said, ‘I need to go to my farm. I need to visit my parents. I need to go for medical treatment.’”
Currently, solar boats are slower than gas-powered ones, leading many to prefer the latter for urgent matters. However, Kara Solar expects that reliability will improve with further technological advances.
28.Why is the students’ daily school run special?
A.It allows for trading with people on the way.
B.It features eco-friendly boats as transportation.
C.It involves travelling through the expanding rainforests.
D.It requires students to get up early in the morning.
29.What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.The negative impact of road building on Ecuador.
B.The history of Ecuador’s infrastructure development.
C.The importance of protecting the eco-system in Ecuador.
D.The related studies on monitoring Ecuador’s tree cover loss.
30.Why does the author mention Luciano’s words?
A.To show the commitment of Kara Solar to the project.
B.To demonstrate the daily routine of a trained operator.
C.To suggest the inconvenience of the local transportation.
D.To highlight people’s positive response to the solar boats.
31.What is a challenge faced by Kara Solar currently?
A.The less than ideal speed of solar boats.
B.Resistance from some community members.
C.The higher cost of solar boats than gas-powered ones.
D.Insufficient funding for further technological advances.

Georgia’s barrier islands feel almost untouched, with dense forests and wide salt marshes (沼泽地) stretching as far as the eye can see. To most visitors, they look perfectly natural. Yet a recent study suggests that these ecosystems are actually the product of thousands of years of human activity. The islands’ earliest inhabitants, ancestors of today’s Muskogee Creek Nation, lived off the sea and ate large quantities of oysters, leaving the shells behind. Over time, the shells piled into huge deposits. What began as simple food waste gradually became part of the landscape itself.
How big a difference could discarded shells really make? To find out, researchers from Pennsylvania State University and the University of Georgia surveyed four barrier islands. They dug pits at regular intervals and measured the thickness of the shell deposits. The results were striking. Evidence of past human habitation, such as broken pottery and stone tools, was found across nearly two-thirds of the islands’ land. In one section of Sapelo Island alone, researchers estimated that about 1.6 billion oyster shells had accumulated. “Human action is interwoven into the landscape,” said Victor Thompson, one of the researchers.
The team then examined whether the shells helped protect the islands from the sea. By comparing elevation data with water-level measurements, they found that without the extra height provided by the shells, large areas of coastline would be regularly covered by water during high tides, with storm surges causing even more severe flooding. The shells benefited the islands in another way as well. Rich in calcium carbonate, they enriched the soil and encouraged certain plants to grow. Centuries later, plantation owners deliberately settled on the same sites, recognizing the value of the fertile, shell-enriched earth.
These findings may challenge the traditional idea of conservation, which often means keeping human influence out of nature. The study suggests that a landscape’s “natural” state is not necessarily the state before humans arrived. Inspired by this idea, Shell to Shore, a nonprofit organization, now collects oyster shells from restaurants and returns them to the coast to strengthen areas at risk of storm surges. Rather than simply keeping people and nature apart, it may be wiser to find ways for the two to work together.
32.What do we know about the shell deposits on the barrier islands?
A.They covered most of the islands. B.They formed the earliest human settlements.
C.They resulted from sea level rise. D.They came from the earliest inhabitants’ meals.
33.What does the underlined phrase “interwoven into the landscape” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Slowly destroying the landscape. B.Deeply connected with the landscape.
C.Passively adapting to the landscape. D.Clearly separated from the landscape.
34.Why does the author mention Shell to Shore in the last paragraph?
A.To promote the seafood business.
B.To encourage people to collect shells.
C.To illustrate human-nature cooperation.
D.To prove humans shouldn’t disturb nature.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Oyster Shells Reveal a Lost Civilization
B.Ancient Wisdom Reveals Cooperation’s Power
C.Rising Seas Threatened Georgia’s Barrier Islands
D.Ancient “Trash” Shaped Georgia’s Barrier Islands

Most adults maintain a habitual relationship with their mirrors, checking their appearance several times a day. 36 She acknowledged that she hardly ever looks in the glass, believing it provides useless information about herself. Host Dax Shepard instantly identified with her, admitting that less than 1% of his mirror-viewing experiences left him feeling encouraged.
Why does the mirror so frequently act as an enemy rather than a friend? The reason lies in its nature: it captures a frozen, critical snapshot rather than the dynamic, living self we present to the world. When we stare at it, we tend to focus on minor imperfections — a stray hair, a tired expression, etc. — while ignoring the overall energy we project. 37
Berner shared her strategy, which is both simple and revolutionary. 38 “I’m delusional (幻想的),” she admitted with a laugh, “but it helps, even if I have spinach (菠菜) in my teeth.” By adopting this seemingly delusional mindset, the intentional ignorance of physical imperfections serves as a powerful protection against body image anxiety.
Berner is far from the only one that has discovered this truth. In 2017, TV personality Claudia Winkleman revealed that mirrors were banned by her mother in her childhood. 39 Appearance is a waste of time; reading books, and being funny, clever, and chatty are what truly matters. To this day, Claudia owns only one mirror, which she uses only for brushing her teeth. These two cases, though from different backgrounds, powerfully confirm the same belief.
40 After all, I realize that the image that truly defines us is shaped by who we are, not by what we see. Turning away from the external glass might just be the first step toward embracing who we genuinely are.
A.The philosophy behind it was very clear.
B.Inspired, I’m determined to quit constant mirror-checking.
C.She pictures her best self in her mind when walking to a mirror.
D.This challenges a deeply rooted habit shared by the vast majority.
E.Consequently, the glass fuels self-doubt rather than self-acceptance.
F.Recently, comedian Hannah Berner shared a different view on a podcast.
G.It’s true that physical beauty should never be completely ignored in daily life.

Li Ming loved spending his summer holidays at his grandfather’s house by the sea. He liked looking for interesting shells and watching the seabirds fly.
One quiet afternoon, Li Ming was walking near some large rocks when he noticed something troubling. Plastic bottles, old fishing nets, and colorful bags were scattered across the sand. He had never paid much attention to this before, but today the mess seemed especially bad. As he bent down to pick up a broken bottle, he heard a soft, sad sound nearby. He looked carefully and saw a gray bird lying on the sand. Its leg was tangled (缠结) in an old fishing net. The bird was trying to escape, but every move seemed to make things worse. Suddenly, Li Ming understood: the trash (垃圾) he had just seen was not just ugly — it was dangerous.
Li Ming felt a strong wish to help. He slowly moved closer, but when he reached out his hand, the bird became very frightened and struggled wildly. Li Ming stepped back, worried and unsure.
Just then, he heard a kind voice behind him. “It needs careful help,” the voice said. Li Ming turned and saw an old man. Grandpa Chen, a retired fisherman, knelt down and opened his bag. He took out scissors and cloth, then gently covered the bird’s head to keep it calm. Slowly, he began to cut the net.
After several minutes, the net was cut. The bird stood up and flew into the blue sky. Li Ming felt a big smile on his face. He looked down at the broken net and some trash on the sand. Grandpa Chen said, “This beach is home to many creatures. Sadly, trash like this appears almost every day.”
Li Ming helped Grandpa Chen pick up the cut net and other plastic bags and bottles nearby. As they worked, Li Ming thought deeply. Saving one bird was wonderful, but the beach was very large, and the problem was very big.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
From that day on, Li Ming decided to turn his worry into action.

【答案】24.C 25.D 26.A 27.D
根据第二段中“I only enjoyed flipping (翻阅) through its pages for the fresh smell of paper.(我只喜欢翻阅书页,闻纸张清新的味道。)”
根据第四段中“Occasionally, I picked up the dictionary out of guilt, but I usually relied on my mother to explain to me.(我偶尔出于愧疚拿起词典,但通常依赖妈妈给我解释生词。)”
根据第六段“That was when I turned to my dictionary — for the first time, with real purpose. I got my Longman and carried it everywhere. I consulted it like a close friend. The more I used it, the more words I remembered. By the end of the book, my dictionary was worn out, but my vocabulary had grown beyond my expectations. I realized that the right tool, used with intention, could make all the difference.(就在这时,我求助于词典——这是我第一次带着实实在在的目的去使用它。我拿出朗文词典,走到哪里带到哪里,像挚友一样查阅它。我用得越多,记住的单词就越多。读完这本书时,词典已经翻旧磨损,而我的词汇量增长远超预期。我意识到,合适的工具,带着目标去使用,才会带来巨大改变。)”可知,作者使用词典的能力随着真实需求而提升。
27.推理判断题。根据第六段“That was when I turned to my dictionary — for the first time, with real purpose. I got my Longman and carried it everywhere. I consulted it like a close friend.

根据第一段“A dozen girls and boys, wearing backpacks, jump down the muddy river bank and into the boat that provides their daily transport.(十几个背着书包的男孩女孩,沿着泥泞河岸跳上船,这船是他们日常的交通工具)”以及第二段“And the fuel that powers their boat is the fierce (猛烈的) tropical sun.(驱动船只的燃料是强烈的热带阳光)”、第三段“Since 2016, the native Achuar people have travelled in solar-powered boats along the Amazonian waters of eastern Ecuador for trading, city tasks, monitoring illegal loggers and studying at school.(自2016年起,土著阿丘尔人乘坐太阳能船在厄瓜多尔东部亚马逊水域出行,用于贸易、进城办事、监视非法伐木者以及上学)”可知,学生上学的特别之处在于使用环保太阳能船作为交通工具。
根据第五段“Over the years, Ecuador has lost about 2.3 million acres of tree cover, or 5% of its total, according to Global Forest Watch. Road construction plays a significant role in that deforestation, both directly and indirectly: A study of 332 native lands in the Amazon found for every mile of road built, about 14 acres of forest are lost.(全球森林观察组织数据显示,多年来厄瓜多尔失去约230万英亩植被,占总量5%。修路直接或间接造成森林砍伐:一项亚马逊332片土著土地研究发现,每修建一英里道路,约14英亩森林消失)”可知,本段主要讲述修路给厄瓜多尔带来的负面影响。
30.推理判断题。根据第七段“The project began with a decade of discussions with Achuar communities before the first solar boat set sail and has been gaining favour since.(项目在首艘太阳能船启航前,与阿丘尔社群进行了十年磋商,自此越来越受欢迎)”和第八段““Every single day I was driving the boat, everyone was asking me for help,” says Luciano, a 27-year-old Achuar boat operator trained by Kara Solar. “They said, ‘I need to go to my farm. I need to visit my parents. I need to go for medical treatment.’”(27岁的阿丘尔族船员卢西亚诺受过卡拉太阳能组织培训,他说:“我每天开船的时候,所有人都来找我帮忙。他们会说:‘我要去我的农场。我要去看望父母。我要去看病。’”)”可知,引用Luciano的话是为了凸显当地人对太阳能船的积极认可与需求。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Currently, solar boats are slower than gas-powered ones, leading many to prefer the latter for urgent matters.(目前太阳能船速度比燃油船慢,因此很多人处理急事时更喜欢燃油船)”可知,Kara Solar当前面临的难题是太阳能船速度不够理想。

根据第一段“The islands’ earliest inhabitants, ancestors of today’s Muskogee Creek Nation, lived off the sea and ate large quantities of oysters, leaving the shells behind. Over time, the shells piled into huge deposits.(这些岛屿最早的居民,也就是如今马斯科吉克里克族的祖先,以海为生,食用了大量牡蛎,留下了大量牡蛎壳。随着时间推移,这些贝壳堆积成了巨大的沉积层。)”可知,关于堰洲岛上的贝壳沉积物,我们可以知道它们来自早期居民的食物。
33.词句猜测题。根据上文“The results were striking. Evidence of past human habitation, such as broken pottery and stone tools, was found across nearly two-thirds of the islands’ land. In one section of Sapelo Island alone, researchers estimated that about 1.6 billion oyster shells had accumulated.(研究结果十分令人惊讶。在这些岛屿近三分之二的土地上,都发现了破碎陶器、石器等古人类活动遗迹。仅在萨佩洛岛的一片区域内,研究人员估算就累计堆积了约16亿个牡蛎壳。)”可知,人类活动已经深深交织在这片地貌之中,interweave本义 “交织,编织在一起”;interwoven into the landscape意为“和自然地貌密不可分、深度关联”。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Inspired by this idea, Shell to Shore, a nonprofit organization, now collects oyster shells from restaurants and returns them to the coast to strengthen areas at risk of storm surges. Rather than simply keeping people and nature apart, it may be wiser to find ways for the two to work together.(受这一理念启发,非营利组织贝壳归岸如今从餐厅回收牡蛎壳,将其送回海岸,加固那些面临风暴潮威胁的区域。与其单纯将人与自然隔离开,不如寻找途径让二者协同共存,这或许才是更明智的做法。)”可推知,作者在最后一段提到 Shell to Shore 这个组织目的是为了举例说明人与自然的合作。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Yet a recent study suggests that these ecosystems are actually the product of thousands of years of human activity. The islands’ earliest inhabitants, ancestors of today’s Muskogee Creek Nation, lived off the sea and ate large quantities of oysters, leaving the shells behind. Over time, the shells piled into huge deposits. What began as simple food waste gradually became part of the landscape itself.(然而近期一项研究表明,这片生态系统实际上是数千年人类活动的产物。

From that day on, Li Ming decided to turn his worry into action. Every weekend, he would take a thick trash bag and walk to the messy beach, carefully picking up plastic bottles, broken fishing nets and all kinds of litter on the sand. Grandpa Chen next door often joined him, chatting and sharing warm stories of the clean and beautiful sea in the old days. Gradually, more neighbors noticed their efforts and came to help, making the beach cleanup a regular small activity in the community.
Realizing that his and his neighbors’ power was limited, he thought of using the Internet to get more people to join in the protection. He took photos of the polluted beach and the little bird he saved, writing a sincere appeal and posting them on social media. His post soon became popular, drawing many warm-hearted volunteers from nearby towns and villages. They organized regular monthly cleanups together and put up obvious warning signs to stop visitors from littering. By the end of summer, the beach had taken on a new clean look, and Li Ming truly understood that small kind efforts could make a huge difference to the world.
