Daryl, a specially trained rescue dog, owes his reputation to an unusual gift: the ability to pick up faint, days-old scents (气味) hidden within thick wild bushes. In late July, the six-year-old dog faced a test that would push this gift to its limit: locating 13-year-old Cody Trenkle Jr., who had disappeared for over three days.
Cody had headed out on his skateboard to a friend’s home. Security cameras captured him passing by, with no further clues afterward. Investigators guessed he had lost control of his board and fell down a deep, tree-covered valley. Suffering head injury and partial consciousness, Cody dragged himself into shaded bushes to escape the burning heat, hundreds of yards off any road. Hours slipped by before his family realized he was missing.
Relatives, firefighters and local residents launched a wide-ranging ground search yet failed to comb the valley’s deep, isolated areas. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports spread that the boy had been seen in distant towns. Though his mother, Stephanie refused to believe them, she could not shake off the worst fear: the longer it went on, the more she had to prepare for the possibility of finding her son’s body. When Cody’s skateboard was eventually spotted at the valley edge, officials called in Gillam and his team.
Gillam received the call with mixed feelings. “Look, given the three-day-old scent track, I could make no promises,” he told the officer. But the skateboard gave them a solid starting point, and his team would spare no effort to bring Cody home. He selected Daryl for the tough mission, for the dog performed best under hot conditions and on aged scent tracks.
Following Daryl’s lead, rescuers made their way deep into damp woods and found Cody. Severely dehydrated (脱水) and badly hurt, he barely possessed strength to speak. Doctors commented that only a few more hours alone in the wilderness would have cost him his life. After weeks of recovery from brain injury, Cody visited the rescue center to express his gratitude to the four-legged hero who had given him a second chance at life.
4. Why was Daryl chosen to search for Cody?
A. He was very familiar with the area.
B. He was chosen to test his unusual gift.
C. He was skilled at tracking days-old scents.
D. He had the best reputation in the rescue unit.
5. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. The unconfirmed reports. B. The distant towns.
C. The local residents. D. The searching officials.
6. What can we infer from Gillam’s words on the phone?
A. He was a man who made no promises.
B. The smells might be too weak to track.
C. He needed more time to assess the situation.
D. The landscape might make tracking difficult.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Dangerous Skateboarding Accident.
B. A Sharp-nosed Hero Saves a Teenager.
C. A Mother Persists in Waiting For Her Son.
D. A Tough Rescue Mission in a Remote Valley.
C
Human well-being depends on the ability to navigate the social world. Such social skill depends on reliable feedback: acts of kindness may be met with gratitude; on other occasions, a misstep brings about a friend’s disapproval and recognition that an apology is needed. These moments are crucial for deepening trust and personal growth. Social life is rarely frictionless, because people are not perfectly in tune with one another. Yet it is precisely through such social friction that relationships deepen and moral understanding develops.
Sycophancy (谄媚) is the opposite of this friction. Many users experience this when AI enthusiastically agrees with their ideas or writing. In academic contexts, the consequence may be investing more time in an average idea. But as AI systems are increasingly consulted for guidance about relationships and conflicts, affirmation (肯定) of this kind may shape how people interpret their own actions and their perspectives of others, and in turn, how they respond to conflict and whether they take responsibility when things go wrong.
Now imagine a world where people routinely consult a sycophantic AI about interpersonal conflicts or moral dilemmas. They are repeatedly assured that they are right, that others are wrong, and that no apology is needed. Over time, this patterned sycophancy may reshape expectations about what feedback should feel like. Individuals may begin to anticipate the same constant affirmation from real human beings. The cumulative effect is a reduction in tolerance for the very social friction through which accountability, perspective-taking, and growth occur.
An AI companion that is always “on your side” may keep users engaged and dependent. But it cannot teach them how to handle real relationships — how to disagree respectfully, repair damaged trust, or accept being wrong. Although AI could be improved to promote long-term personal development, such goals conflict with systems built to maximize user engagement. Challenging users or presenting uncomfortable truths is a sure way to drive them away. This tension raises fundamental ethical questions: Should we prioritize immediate emotional comfort or long-term social health? Who gets to decide? Addressing these challenges will require interdisciplinary collaboration among computer scientists, social scientists, ethicists, and policy makers.
8. What role does social friction play in relationships according to the author?
A. It generates positive feedback.
B. It guarantees harmonious relationships.
C. It causes open disapproval or conflicts.
D. It enhances social bonds and moral growth.
9. Which of the following is NOT a consequence of sycophantic AI?
A. Misguided judgment about one’s actions.
B. Reduced tolerance for interpersonal friction.
C. Weakened willingness to take responsibility.
D. Increased ability to resolve real-life conflicts.
10. What prevents AI systems from being improved to challenge users?
A. Lack of technical capacity. B. Conflicts with commercial interests.
C. Unawareness of its potential harm. D. Absence of interdisciplinary collaboration.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward current AI systems?
A. Strictly neutral. B. Strongly opposed.
C. Cautiously concerned. D. Mildly supportive.

Natural disasters can have a significant impact on the mental health of individuals and their communities at large. There’s no doubt that seeing homes wiped away and city infrastructure (基础设施) in a mess right after a disaster would be a severe blow. New research by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that survivors of natural disasters often experience worsening mental health effects many months or years later.
Surprisingly, the first few weeks after a natural disaster can be a time of emotional highs for a community. It includes a “heroic phase”, when people witness and perform rescues that inspire a sense of altruism That’s followed by the “honeymoon phase”, during which the arrival of large amounts of assistance encourages optimism and bonding within a community.
However, the support gradually decreases over time due to limited resources and lack of recognition of the lasting mental health impact of a disaster. That’s when communities enter the “disillusionment phase”. Recovery workers have packed up and moved on, and people feel left alone. Many community members become physically exhausted and substance use disorders surface during this period, which can last months or even years. And trigger events, like the anniversary of the disaster, can cause dramatic increases in mental health problems.
The study indicates that emergency preparedness plans should find ways to extend mental health services throughout the long-term recovery phase. “These things should come first: focusing on people with limited financial resources, increasing the awareness of mental health services during expected emotional lows, and suicide prevention strategies as well” said Dr Gary Small, chair of psychiatry at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Regardless of the strategy used, providing long-term mental health support is critical to helping disaster survivors get back on their feet and recover from trauma (创伤). It’s a reminder that the natural disaster isn’t just an environmental concern — it’s a mental health issue as well.
12. What mainly causes the community high spirits after a natural disaster?
A. Reconstruction work. B. Rescue efforts and support.
C. Thankfulness for surviving. D. Increased community participation.
13. What can be a typical feature of the “disillusionment phase”?
A. Resources have run out. B. Recovery workers are not helpful.
C. The disaster anniversary is observed. D. Survivors may experience hopelessness.
14. What does Dr. Small suggest regarding the mental health services?
A. Supporting poor survivors. B. Focusing on financial supporters.
C. Recognizing emotional lows. D. Helping survivors recover quickly.
15. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote natural disaster response plans.
B. To highlight the shortage of mental health services.
C. To call for long-term post-disaster mental health care.
D. To emphasize the damaging power of natural disasters.
We all know that our dogs have feelings, and that they can be happy or sad. But, do dogs actually cry real tears when they get sad? Dogs are highly sensitive pets, and they experience a variety of emotions, just like humans. ____16____ They might just have watery eyes. As far as scientists know, humans are the only species that cry for emotional reasons.
Dogs do “cry” when they’re sad. However, dogs use voices to express feelings rather than having watery eyes. They begin doing this at a young age by crying out for their moms when in trouble. ____17____ As they get older, dogs may continue this whining (哀鸣) when sad.
Once they have matured, dogs consider their human owners to be the pack leader, or mother figure, and will direct their whining or crying towards them. Many specialists believe dogs suffering from separation anxiety will whine for their mothers. ____18____
____19____ They can also be sad, in pain or attempting to let you know that they’re feeling uncomfortable or want something. Also, dogs may howl (嗥叫) occasionally, which is just another form of “crying”. In fact, many experts believe that howling is a dog’s ultimate expression of sadness.
If dogs don’t produce emotional tears, why do they tear up at all? Studies show there is oftentimes a medical reason behind dogs having tears. ____20____ A dog’s tear ducts (泪管) work somewhat differently. For dogs, the tears or liquid will flow back into the throat and nose rather than from the eyes.
A. This is because dogs are social animals.
B. However, no science proves dogs cry for sadness.
C. Separation anxiety isn’t the only cause of dogs whining.
D. Similarly, when sad, they go to their parent-like person.
E. Virtually, that may be a sign of a serious health condition.
F. The reasons for dogs crying or howling are exactly the same.
G. They learn to make distinct sounds that can be recognized instantly.

In my childhood, I tried many activities, and most of them were chosen by Mom. She would always say, “Join the swim team, Tara. Your sister is a good swimmer, so you should be too.” But she didn’t know that I was really scared of water. Even though I was afraid, I had to do this activity that made me nervous.
Every Saturday was a struggle. I would ask Mom with all my heart not to make me go to the swim meet. But most of the time, I didn’t succeed. When the starting gun went off with a loud sound, I would gather all my courage and strength and jump into the cold water. I would swim as fast as I could to the other side of the pool, but I would always see the other swimmers pass me easily.
But I didn’t give up completely. The reason was my dad. When I finally reached the edge of the pool, tired and defeated, he would be there with a warm, dry towel. He would tell me that he was proud of my hard work. His words and presence were like a life buoy, keeping me going in this uncertain situation.
Then, a big turning point came. Our school orchestra (管弦乐队) came to our class and gave a performance. The drums were just annoying, and the flutes were boring. But when I heard the violin… oh, that was different. It made the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. My heart started to dance with its melody.
For the first time in my life, I was very happy. And what’s more, the orchestra director gave me a permission slip (许可单) for my parents to sign, asking me to try out for the first seat in the community orchestra. This was a new start, a glimmer of hope in a journey that had been full of challenges and uncertainties.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

C 5. A 6. B 7. B
根据第一段“the ability to pick up faint, days-old scents hidden within thick wild bushes(能够捕捉藏匿在茂密野生灌木丛中、微弱且留存数日的气味)”以及第四段“He selected Daryl for the tough mission, for the dog performed best under hot conditions and on aged scent tracks(他挑选达里尔执行这项艰巨的任务,因为这只搜救犬在高温环境下、追踪陈旧气味痕迹的表现最为出色)”可知,Daryl擅长追踪留存数日的陈旧气味,因此被选中执行搜救任务。
根据第三段“Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports spread that the boy had been seen in distant towns. Though his mother, Stephanie, refused to believe them(与此同时,有未经证实的传言称有人在偏远小镇看到了这个男孩。
D 9. D 10. B 11. C
根据第一段“Yet it is precisely through such social friction that relationships deepen and moral understanding develops. (然而,正是通过这种社会摩擦,关系才能加深,对道德的理解才能发展。)”可知,作者认为社会摩擦能够加深人际关系并促进对道德的理解更深刻。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“But as AI systems are increasingly consulted for guidance about relationships and conflicts, affirmation (肯定) of this kind may shape how people interpret their own actions and their perspectives of others, and in turn, how they respond to conflict and whether they take responsibility when things go wrong. (但随着人工智能系统被越来越多地用于人际关系和冲突方面的咨询,这种肯定可能会影响人们如何解读自己的行为和他人的观点,进而影响他们如何应对冲突以及在事情出错时是否承担责任。)”可知,谄媚式AI会导致人们对自己的行为判断失误(选项A)和承担责任意愿减弱(选项C);根据第三段最后一句“The cumulative effect is a reduction in tolerance for the very social friction through which accountability, perspective-taking, and growth occur. (累积效应是对社会摩擦的容忍度降低,而正是通过这种社会摩擦,责任感、换位思考和个人成长才得以发生。)”可知,对人际摩擦容忍度降低(选项B)也是后果之一。“解决现实生活冲突能力的提升”文章没有提及。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Although AI could be improved to promote long-term personal development, such goals conflict with systems built to maximize user engagement. Challenging users or presenting uncomfortable truths is a sure way to drive them away.
D
B 13. D 14. A 15. C

With the wide spread of AI tools, our class had a discussion about their advantages and disadvantages for middle school students.
Some students hold the view that AI helps a lot. It can explain difficult knowledge, polish compositions and offer learning resources, greatly improving our learning efficiency.
However, others argue that AI has drawbacks. Some students depend too much on it and copy answers directly. Gradually, they lose the ability to think independently.
In my opinion, we should use AI properly. It is just a helpful tool, and we must keep independent thinking while using it.

Tightly holding the permission slip, I ran all the way home after school. I burst through the door, eager to share my discovery with my mom. I explained how the violin’s sound had captivated me, and to my surprise, she sensed the genuine passion in my words. With a gentle smile, she signed the slip, giving me her silent blessing to pursue this new path. That evening, I immersed myself in the violin’s world, my fingers exploring its contours, learning its structure. As I practiced, each scale and note became a step in my transformation, from a hesitant swimmer to a budding musician.
Finally came the tryout for the first seat. I stood before the mirror, the violin secure under my chin, feeling the strings resonate with my touch. The notes I played were echoes of my dedication, reflections of the hours I’d spent honing my skills. Stepping into the audition room, I felt the outside world melt away, leaving only the music and my connection to it. The judges’ gazes were upon me. The violin was no longer just an instrument; it was a part of who I was becoming, and as the last note faded, I knew I had found not just a voice, but a new identity. This audition marked my emergence from the challenges of the past into a future filled with potential.
