Shared mobility: Making travel easier for all
In many big cities in Europe and the US, it might seem like we’ve achieved cheap and easy mobility for everyone — just use your phone to find shared e-bikes and electric cars. But if you’re elderly, living in a low-income area or imagine without a smartphone or credit card, using these shared services becomes much more difficult. Here is a survey reporting barriers to using bike sharing.
Shared mobility could be a key part of a more sustainable transportation system. But to be most effective, it needs to include everyone. For-profit shared mobility providers have largely failed to deliver on this, but various initiatives and projects are finding creative solutions to reach underserved communities.
By combining economic support, grassroots innovation, and empathetic (能产生共鸣的) design, these efforts aim to make mobility available to everyone, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and ensure fair access for all. “You tend to plan for what you know. That’s why it’s so important to bring in different views in the development of mobility, ” says Lina Mosshammer, founder and CEO of the Austrian mobility consulting company Point&.
1. What percentage of lower income people express concern on safety in the survey?
A. 24%. B. 27%. C. 42%. D. 88%.
2. Which solution involves the idea of recycling used bikes?
A. Public-Sector Intervention. B. Community-Centric Design.
C. Technology Adaptation. D. Non-Profit Innovation.
3. What does Mosshammer stress to address the challenge?
A. Increasing urban mobility. B. Offering affordable alternatives.
C. Integrating diverse viewpoints. D. Consulting with the users beforehand.
B
For twenty years, the internet has been my second home while communicating science. Recently, I came across an image: a crying Earth surrounded by fallen trees, declaring, “No intelligent species would destroy their own home.” This image troubled me deeply. I refuse to let my eight-year-old son believe humans are stupid or evil — because it’s obviously untrue. But I often find myself quite lonely. I’m wondering if, perhaps, there are other folks out there who feel the same as I do.
We didn’t cause climate change through being stupid, but through being extremely smart. Our ancestors burned coal to solve urgent problems: growing more food, heating and lighting homes. We want to provide a good life for ourselves and our children. The results have been astonishing. In the U.S. in 1895 one quarter of people died before age five. Today it’s under 1 percent, and we will keep pushing until it hits zero. Imagine the essays Ben Franklin or Mark Twain would write about this level of advancement. How would they keep tears from their eyes if they saw what we’ve achieved?
So much of that achievement has been based on the fossil fuels we’ve burned to generate it, whether coal, natural gas or oil. We’ve learned that this harms both the environment and people, and to our credit we aren’t always bad at addressing this. It was not long ago that London cleaned its smoke-blackened air. When rain becomes acidic, the world changes its policies. When harms are done locally, we tend to be pretty good at cleaning things up. Here’s where I feel hope: we have already done this, and we know it is possible.
I don’t want my son growing up thinking that his species is in some way evil. I want him thinking humans are problem solvers, and whatever strategies we take to fix global warming will create more new problems, too. This is a pretty normal story for intelligent species.
4. How did the author feel seeing the picture online?
A. Disturbed. B. Ashamed. C. Frightened. D. Confused.
5. What is implied by mentioning Ben Franklin and Mark Twain?
A. The warning of the warming Earth. B. The progress in social development.
C. The praise for human modesty. D. The demand for greener energy.
6. Why does the author feel hopeful about humans?
A. We will make more policies. B. We have discovered more fossil fuels.
C. We highly value the role of the earth. D. We can restore damage to the environment.
7. What does the underlined word “story” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. The cycle of causing and tackling problems. B. The ability to create a bright future.
C. The evil nature of human beings. D. The positive attitude to life.
C
Statistically speaking, you’ve probably already pressed a like button several times today. If you’re under 20 years old, you may press it even more. Perhaps you recently posted on social media platforms and are eagerly checking as the like count rises on your phone. But what makes the like button so appealing to us? According to Nicholas Christakis, a sociologist and physician at Yale University, it is because “the like button is built, in a very deep and distant way, on the back of evolutionary (进化的) biology”.
All animals learn and evolve as they interact with a challenging world, but only certain of them have the ability to learn from the experience of other individuals. “Social learning” showed great evolutionary benefits, allowing human ancestors to raise their chances of survival by avoiding the mistakes they saw others making, and copying the successful moves.
This helps explain why human beings are often affected by “homophily” (同质偏好), a preference for people we consider as similar to ourselves. Just as birds of a feather flock together (物以类聚), a vast amount of research has shown that humans have a deep-seated preference to respond positively to sameness. This tendency can lead to prejudice, but it is also connected to humans’ powerful advantage of social learning.
There are other consequences of an evolved social learning ability. They include our habits of expressing gratitude and acknowledging — essentially saying “thank you for letting me learn from you”. Because we are happy to get clues about threats and to gain opportunities, we receive knowledge in a fashion that will encourage more of it to come our way. In turn, we as givers respond to that positive confirmation. It’s what keeps us sharing what we discover.
All this explains why we have grown to welcome liking and being liked. It’s just not possible for something to become so popular without being connected with something fundamental in our biology.
8. How does the author lead in the topic of the text?
A. By making a comparison. B. By asking pointed questions.
C. By explaining an assumption. D. By presenting a social phenomenon.
9. What does the author say about “homophily”?
A. It has both harm and benefits. B. It’s the key to social learning.
C. It’s far from well-documented. D. It helps to express preferences.
10. Why do humans tend to say thanks?
A. To gain more opportunities. B. To deepen social interaction.
C. To respond to positive feedback. D. To boost more knowledge sharing.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Discovery: Humans Evolve to Like “Likes”
B. Social Learning: A Real Evolutionary Advantage
C. Like Buttons: The Main Driver of Social Media
D. Interpretation: Homophily Shapes Human Behavior

London-based startup Brilliant Planet has rented 6,100 hectares of land in southern Morocco, situated between the Atlantc Ocean and the Sahara. And it’s using it to grow algae (藻类), which absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide and sends out oxygen.
Brilliant Planet’s CEO Adam Taylor says the company has developed a way to grow algae at extreme rates starting in a glass cup in a lab and ending in 12,000-square-meter pools of locally-sourced seawater. The algae is obtained from the water then pumped up a 10-story tower and sprayed into the desert air. In the 30 seconds or so it takes to reach the ground, hot air dries the biomass (生物质) out, leaving hypersaline (超盐的) algae pieces which can be collected and shallow buried, sequestering (使隔绝) their carbon for thousands of years.
“Nature-based solutions are a great way of removing carbon,” Taylor said. “Deserts are an underused environment. It does not cost a lot of money to rent the desert. What’s more, you’re not competing with farms or forests. You’re out of the way, not bothering people.”
Taylor claims that Brilliant Planet’s solution can permanently remove 30 times more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per hectare per year than a typical European forest. Brilliant Planet’s goal is to remove one million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year by the end of the decade.“Globally, we’ve identified about half a million square kilometers of flat desert-ocean land where it works,” Taylor said, adding that the company hopes to set up in Namibia next.
Fatna Ikrame El Fanne, an environmental engineer, described the use of algae as “a new and promising strategy” that “is a typical example of innovative use of natural process to address an urgent global issue.” Nevertheless, she expressed caution. “Microalgae production on a large scale might damage local ecosystems, lead to overuse of water resources, and change habitats,” she said.
There’s an acknowledgement that one company can’t do it all — and can’t go it alone. “We are part of a group of probably 40 to 50 wonderful ideas of how people can remove carbon from the atmosphere,” Taylor said, calling for “a Manhattan Project-type attitude” to tackling carbon capture. Whether algae is the solution the world needs remains to be seen. But the idea’s growing on people.
12. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Brilliant Planet?
A. Its establishment of an algae plant.
B. Its method of growing algae.
C. Its process of carbon capture.
D. Its daily routine in the desert.
13. What advantage did Taylor highlight about using deserts for carbon removal?
A. Huge profits.
B. High temperature.
C. No occupation of rich land.
D. No biodiversity concerns.
14. What can be inferred about the use of algae from El Fanne’s words?
A. It needs improving.
B. It is highly efficient.
C. It is not worth promoting.
D. It is commercially developed.
15. Why is “a Manhattan Project- type attitude” mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To highlight the challenges of carbon removal.
B. To recognize the contributions of Brilliant Planet.
C. To prove the effectiveness of nature-based solutions.
D. To emphasize the necessity of joint efforts.

Stephanie, a freshman at East Peoria High School, had just finished her second day of classes, filled with excitement. Eager to enjoy the warm afternoon, she decided to take her bicycle out for a ride. The wind rushed past her, refreshing her spirit as she sped down a hill. Suddenly, something went wrong. She lost control of her bike and fell hard to the ground. Everything seemed to slow down. Then she realized something terrible: one of the bike’s handle grips (车把) was gone, leaving a sharp, exposed metal bar. It cut into her right leg, damaged a main blood vessel and caused great pain.
Panic set in as she lay on the ground, her mind racing. Damage to a main blood vessel can cause heavy bleeding, making a person lose consciousness or even die within minutes. Stephanie felt herself slipping away, believing she wouldn’t survive.
At that moment, help was coming.
Kupris, who had been working on a woodworking project nearby, heard the chaos, dropped his tools and rushed outside. His heart pounded as he dashed along a block, driven by a desperate desire to assist. Following the blood on the road, he felt a surge of fear and concern. When he finally reached the scene, the sight that came into view was shocking. There lay Stephanie on the ground, her face pale and her body twisted in pain.
“The whole thing looked impossible — it couldn’t be real,” Kupris recalled later, still shaking with fright. He saw a severe wound on her upper leg. Blood was flowing quickly from the wound. He called her, but there was still no response. Panic surged through him as he realized he needed to act quickly — every second counted.

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. A

【答案】12. C 13. C 14. A 15. D

Firstly, community service should be a graduation requirement because it benefits society and promotes students’ growth. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。

“What should I do?” echoed in Kupris’s head. With great effort, he managed to calm himself down, recalling the first aid knowledge he had acquired before. Swiftly, he removed his shirt and tightly bound it above the wound on Stephanie’s leg, attempting to slow down the bleeding. Then, taking out his phone, he dialed 911 with trembling fingers, shouting the situation and location to the operator, his voice hoarse due to nervousness. While waiting for the ambulance, he kept talking to the unconscious Stephanie, striving to maintain a calm tone despite his inner fear, hoping to offer her some spiritual support.
Luckily, Stephanie opened her eyes. She looked disoriented and was in great pain. Upon seeing this, Kupris felt a mixture of joy and worry. He softly comforted her, assuring her that help was on the way and that she should not be afraid. At that moment, the siren of the ambulance was heard in the distance. Kupris quickly stood up and waved to signal its arrival. When the paramedics carried Stephanie onto the stretcher, he finally let out a sigh of relief and slumped to the ground, his mind filled with mixed emotions as he recalled the thrilling scene just now.
