The Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh may not have many art groups for visitors to experience local traditional arts, but there are still a handful of top-class choices that are worth keeping an eye on.
Sovanna Phum Arts Association
Sovanna Phum Arts Association works tirelessly to keep the arts alive in the capital. With over 120 artists, it hosts a variety of shows, including mask dances and traditional music, every Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm. Beyond watching the shows, visitors can even try their hand at drumming and dancing in private workshops.
Sophiline Arts Ensemble
This troupe (剧团) is an internationally-famous classical dance and music company that is based outside Phnom Penh. While the award-winning troupe is often overseas showing groundbreaking original dance pieces, the artists also perform nationwide several times a year, so it’s worth following their website and Facebook page.
Selapak
If you fancy learning first-hand the traditional art of Cambodian dance or the ancient martial art (武术), then Selapak is a good place to start. It runs traditional dance and martial art classes, all led by experts in their fields. Private classes can be arranged on request. On top of that, performances given by talented students take place four days a week.
Cambodian Living Arts
As the main organization tasked with bringing traditional arts back to life and guiding them in a new, modern direction, Cambodian Living Arts trains performers and presents daily shows at the capital’s National Museum. Its traditional dance show takes audiences on a journey from Angkor’s palaces to the villages of today through song, music, and theatre.

Black Americans like Ed Dwight were not given the same opportunities as other Americans. But he didn’t notice. During his early years, his eyes were on the single-engine private planes near his family’s farm and the stars in the night sky, which inspired in him a longing for exploration and opened the door to possibilities.
As soon as he could, Dwight applied to join the Air Force, but there was one challenge. Dwight was a quarter-inch too short to pass the physical examination to become a fighter pilot. His teammates came up with a plan to put cardboard in his socks. Though the plan failed, a commanding officer was so impressed by Dwight’s determination that he pushed him to join the USAF flight training program. Dwight didn’t waste the opportunity, pouring himself into demanding training. “I got to work a little earlier and stayed a little later. I was taking other people’s missions, trying to build up flying time.”
In 1961, Dwight’s excellence caught the attention of America’s newly formed space agency, NASA. He was chosen to become an astronaut in training — the first Black pilot to reach such heights. But in a painful turn, he was eventually not selected for the team that was launched into space. It was disheartening. But as his mother taught him, challenges are simply goals not yet achieved, and anything is possible.
That “anything” came true in a full-circle moment in 2023, when Dwight got a very unexpected, life-changing phone call. That call resulted in Ed Dwight boarding a Blue Origin rocket ship on May 19, 2024, to break the bounds (束缚) of Earth’s gravity and become the world’s oldest living astronaut — at 90 years old.
24. What started Ed Dwight’s dream of flying?
A. Farming experience. B. Desire for freedom.
C. Curiosity about the sky. D. Unfair opportunities.
25. Why was Ed Dwight finally accepted by the Air Force?
A. His strong will moved the officer. B. The cardboard plan worked.
C. His teammates recommended him. D. He excelled in the examination.
26. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Dwight was the first Black pilot. B. Dwight’s mom influenced his mindset.
C. Dwight lost hope after being rejected. D. Dwight’s height prevented his selection.
27. Which of the following can best describe Ed Dwight?
A. Creative and intelligent. B. Hard-working and positive.
C. Energetic and humorous. D. Open-minded and generous.

Recently, a growing number of young Chinese prefer a zero-sugar diet, showing a health-focused and wellness-driven approach to life. This “zero sugar” trend (趋势) has now moved from dining tables to social interactions, giving rise to the increasingly popular idea called “zero sugar socializing”.
Zero sugar socializing refers to young people keeping a certain level of distance and independence in their relationships, avoiding relying too much on others for emotional comfort. Just like zero-sugar foods, this style of socializing stresses a non-sticky, non-dependent approach.
According to the Insights Report on Social Trends released by the Just So Soul Research Institute, young people today usually have around two close friends. When asked about their ideal state with friends, 54% of them chose “frequent contact while still having their own space”.
In moments of loneliness, digital characters become new companions and ways of communication for netizens. “The popularity of digital friends and idols comes from their down-to-earth nature, serving as ‘spiritual companions’,” wrote Xiaoqiaoliushui in a comment.
“Choosing zero sugar socializing is an expression of young people’s pursuit (追求) of self-fulfillment,” noted Wang Zhongwu, a sociology professor at Shandong University. With busy study or work, young people now prefer friendships with low social costs, featuring a relaxed and fashionable atmosphere. The rise of this social mode stresses independence in interactions, turning socializing into a burden-free experience.
“Zero sugar socializing isn’t equal to ‘zero socializing’ but rather encourages young people to put independence first in their connections,” said Wang. He believes it fits the trends of social development and meets the practical needs of modern life. However, while enjoying the ease and freedom brought by zero sugar socializing, young individuals should not overlook the pleasures and significance of traditional social interactions.
28. Why does the author mention a zero-sugar diet in the first paragraph?
A. To give an example. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To make comparisons. D. To support an argument.
29. What can be learned about zero-sugar socializing?
A. It is a way to avoid social contact with others.
B. It meets young people’s need for digital friends.
C. It represents a choice for self-dependent relationships.
D. It encourages young people to have more close friends.
30. What might be a reason for the popularity of zero-sugar socializing?
A. It features zero social cost.
B. It focuses on health and wellness.
C. It makes up for young people’s loneliness.
D. It leaves young people freedom and space.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A New Trend of Independent Friendship B. Digital Companions in Modern Social Life
C. The Growing Popularity of Zero-Sugar Diets D. The Decline of Traditional Social Interaction
D
Most adults cannot remember events from early childhood, a phenomenon (现象) known as infantile amnesia. This is true whether you ask a college student or a grandparent, suggesting adults’ lack of infant (婴儿) memories is not just the result of normal forgetting that happens with the passage of time.
There are two possible explanations for this. One is that the hippocampus, a brain area important for memory, is too underdeveloped in infants to store long-term memories. Another is that the infant brain can store memories, but we finally cannot reach them. Recent studies in mice show that the hippocampus not only can store memories early in life but may keep them into adulthood.
But what about humans? A research team conducted fMRI studies with infants who were wide awake — a method not tried before because it is hard to study babies who move a lot and are hard to stay focused. Since memory formation depends on wakeful experiences, through over 400 tries and a lot of help from families, the team developed new ways to keep infants calm and interested.
In one key test, infants were shown photographs of faces, objects and settings one at a time during fMRI scanning. Soon after, their memory was checked by showing each of these known photographs next to a new image of the same kind. When infants looked longer at the earlier seen photograph, researchers labeled (标记) it as remembered; or it was considered forgotten. Results showed greater hippocampal activity when infants saw images they remembered, especially in those over 12 months old. These results suggest that the infant hippocampus can form memories from short experiences.
These findings support that early memories are stored but become hard to reach. Important questions remain: How long do these memories stay? Could earlier memories be found again? Answering these could solve a long-standing scientific problem and help understand language learning, developmental disorders, and memory loss. What’s your earliest memory? Earlier ones may stay hidden in your brain.
32. What do the underlined words in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Memory change with age. B. Lack of infant memories.
C. Normal forgetting over time. D. Unwillingness to remember events.
33. What is the challenge in using fMRI to study infants’ memory?
A. Getting enough family help. B. Applying a brand new technology.
C. Understanding memory formation. D. Keeping the attention of wakeful infants.
34. What did the key test find about infants’ memory?
A. Memory improves greatly after age two.
B. Memories from babyhood can last for years.
C. Infants look longer at what they’ve forgotten.
D. Infants store memories they later fail to get back.
35. Why are the important questions mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To guide further studies. B. To raise public concerns.
C. To doubt research methods. D. To provide related answers.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Ever woken up from a nap feeling lost or more tired, as if you’ve forgotten which planet you’re on? 36 It is a sign that you might go beyond your napping mark. It can slow you down in the short term and potentially affect your nighttime sleep in the long run. To avoid this and wake up refreshed, follow these principles for taking the perfect nap.
Take regular naps
You don’t want a casual napping schedule where you sleep “sometimes early, sometimes late, sometimes short.” So pick a time, like after lunch or in between your afternoon meetings and stick to it. 37 If you’re napping in your car on your lunch break for example, consider bringing a pillow, an eye mask or earplugs to help boost your nap experience.
38
From the moment you wake up in the morning, sleep pressure builds in your body to push you to fall asleep again at the end of the day. Napping relieves some of that pressure, so it’s important that you nap early enough in the day for it to build back up by bedtime. If you follow a conventional nighttime sleep schedule, take a nap between noon and 3 p.m. 39
Keep your nap brief
40 It might be painful if you’re a fan of a long, leisurely afternoon snooze. However, the truth is that longer naps can lead to sleep inertia (睡眠惯性) more easily because you might enter deeper sleep, making it harder to wake up. If you find yourself falling asleep quickly and dipping into deep sleep with only 30 minutes of napping, that’s a sign you’re not getting enough sleep at night. If this is the case, take steps to raise the quality of your nighttime sleep.
A. Nap early in the day.
B. Follow a nap schedule early.
C. A good, short nap can offer mental health benefits.
D. That sleepy, almost-drunk feeling is called sleep inertia.
E. Experts suggest keeping your naps from 10 minutes to an hour tops.
F. Use the same sleep environment each time and create a cosy nap space.
G. For people who work nights, take a nap at least 6 hours before you sleep.
