Last winter. I went to Scotland for my holiday. Life was 36 for me at the beginning because of my poor spoken English. 37 , I found that body language made it easier to make conversations with others. How does body language work? Is it important?
Of course yes! As the old saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” Sometimes, we can talk about 38 even without a word. For example, shrug our shoulders (耸肩), and, without a word, we’ve just said, “I don’t know.”
Body language can help us show 39 better. Also, it can help us 40 if someone tells a lie. Often, people who tell lies do not make eye contact (眼神交流). They may turn away or raise their shoulders because they are 41 with the conversation.
Body language is important in our personal lives, too. It can show if you really care about your friends. Leaning forward (向前倾斜) into the conversation, for example, means you 42 what is being said. Listening with no eye contact means you don’t care but wait for your turn to 43 .
Scientists have been studying body language for a long time. They say people show more than 70% of our messages through body language. Sometimes, body language even can help us show our feelings 44 words.
So it is very important for us to learn body language. 45 understanding body language, we can understand each other more easily. We will find it easier to get a job. We will also have lasting friendships.

The summer vacation is a time to enjoy a change from the school year. It’s a good chance to work on different activities that you don’t have much time to do during the rest of the year.
We asked about 2,000 people what they would do during the summer vacation. Most of the survey-takers agreed that the summer vacation was a break from homework and they could relax.
Amy is in high school. After school, she sometimes works in a cafe. She told us, “It’s a chance to relax after a hard school year — sleep more, and see my friends more.”
We also asked them if they would be too busy or kind of bored. About 52% of the survey-takers said they would be busy during the summer vacation but still have time to relax. And that is exactly how it should be.
How bored or busy people feel during the summer vacation depends on how old they are. Survey-takers in their early teens were more likely to be bored. Among them, 40% said they would be bored and only 10% thought they would be too busy.
( ) 51. What does the underlined word “survey-takers” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A few weeks before Thanksgiving, I sent my son a short text. “Are you staying at school for the break, or coming home? And if you come back, when? Let me know your plans! Love you!!!” He replied (回复), “Sure.” Sure? Sure to what? Sure you’re coming home? Sure you are staying? I waited for more information, but got nothing. I texted him again the next day, but he did not reply for two weeks.
On Thanksgiving morning, he suddenly showed up at home. I did not expect (预料) that. “You are here?!” I asked. “Yeah! I said I would come.” “You only said ‘sure’” “Yeah. Sure is short for I’m coming home’.” Well, his short answer caused a problem: ▲
This made me think: Are one-word text replies polite, or am I just old?
I know that people talk differently now. One-word answers can save time. If someone texts you, “Did you buy milk?”, a simple “Yes” is fine.
But to some people, like your mum, one-word answers may be too impolite (不礼貌的). Also, one word can cause problems. Without voice or facial expressions (表情), one-word answers may seem cold.
So, when we are busy, we should still reply clearly (清楚地) or explain that we will reply more later. And to my son: I love you. I am glad you came home for the holiday! But next year, I will ask for full sentences. How about making that our promise?
( ) 56. Why did the writer text her son before Thanksgiving?
A. To show her love.
B. To ask him to go home.
C. To ask about his plan on Thanksgiving Day.
( ) 57. Which sentence is the best to put in “ ▲ ” in the passage?
A. He got bad grades.
B. We didn’t prepare enough food.
C. His grandfather got ill.
( ) 58. What does the writer think of one-word replies?
①cold ②impolite ③clear
A. ①② B. ①③ C. ①②③
( ) 59. What message do the underlined sentences show?
A. The writer will use one-word replies more often.
B. The writer wants to see a change in her son’s way of communicating.
C. The writer won’t speak with her son if he replies with one-word answers again.
( ) 60. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Why young people like one-word replies
B. How to reply when others use one-word answers.
C. A mother’s feelings about her son’s one-word replies.

Today, many people don’t 1 understand the role of a home organizer (房屋收纳师). They think home organizers just go into people’s 2 houses, tell them they have too many things, and ask them to throw some away. But that’s not exactly how we work.
Here’s what great home organizers really do.
We don’t say anything about your space. 3 , we try to make it better. We know life can be busy, and that’s why things get disorganized. That’s okay! We come to help, not to make you feel bad. We will work hard — moving things, 4 , and finding the right place for everything.
We also teach you how to keep things tidy. With right tips, we believe 5 home can be organized. Sometimes, not everything you have helps. We can help you 6 what to keep and what to take out as rubbish.
Most importantly, we see your home as a whole. We understand all your needs. And we will change every part of your home to make it a place where you live 7 .

It’s a new term! Do you know why we have to go to school? Or who created it?
From a very early time, people needed to pass down knowledge (知识) to stay alive. Parents taught their kids much, like hunting, farming and cooking…. But as more people lived together in towns, they had a better idea: what if one teacher could teach many kids at once? That was how ideas about school began.
The school system goes back thousands of years. In ancient Greece, parents of rich families sent their boys to school when they were 16. In ancient Rome, families would have tutors to teach their children at home. In ancient China, schools began as early as in the Xia Dynasty.
The modern schools we have today are much newer. In the 19th century, a man in the US named Horace Mann believed that every child should go to school and learn, even if their family was poor. So he created “common schools”. Money from taxes (税) kept them going. He also made sure teachers were trained (受训练) to be good at their jobs. His big idea was to bring kids from all different backgrounds together in one classroom.
Next time when you go to school, remember that you are part of a big idea – every child should be able to learn and have a better future.

Lots of people go travelling during holidays. As travelers look for personalized (个人特制的) experiences, many of them choose AI to be their online tour guides.
During the May Day holiday, Wu Hongbo, a visitor from Dalian, travelled to Shanxi. It was his first visit there, but Wu chose to have a self-guided tour. “If I travel with a tour group, I will spend much money. Also, it stops me from exploring freely,” Wu said.
To make his trip better, he turned to AI for help. There were so many places of interest in Shanxi and he was not familiar with the travel routes (路线), so he input his travel dates, budget and personal interests into an AI app. Soon, he got a personalized week-long travel plan. It showed him the ways to get around, places to visit, and hotels to stay in. Wu is interested in ancient buildings and tasty food, so the AI app also listed several not-so-famous but culturally rich places and delicious dishes.
“This AI-planned tour truly gave me great surprises,” Wu said. “The places and routes perfectly matched my taste, helping me understand Shanxi better.”
Some scientists say 2025 will be the breakout year for AI tour guides. They think AI can fully meet tourists’ needs for personalized travel. During a personalized trip, AI can serve tourists in real time. Through modern technologies (科技), an AI tour guide can even act like a personal guide, explaining cultural meanings behind the tourist areas.
So, in the future, more and more people will use AI tour guides. Besides, human guides and AI guides will certainly bring us more personalized experiences together. Let’s look forward to the bright future of AI touring!
1. Why did Wu choose to have a self-guided tour?
2. How did Wu get the travel plan from the AI app?
3. What does Wu think of the AI-planned tour?
4. What is the future of AI tour guides like in the writer’s eyes?
5. Do you want to use AI tour guides for travel? Why?
