A strong core brings us many benefits in daily life. Despite busy schedules, there are several core exercises you can do without going to the gym.
1 The Bridge
Lie on your back with your knees bent. Keep your back in a neutral position. This means do not arch or round your back. Then raise your hips (髋部) off the floor until they are on the same level as your knees and shoulders. Hold for several deep breaths.
2 The Quadruped
Place your hands on the floor directly below your shoulders. Make your head, neck and your back in a line. Raise your left arm and your right leg at the same time. Then hold for three deep breaths. Release back to your hands and knees. And repeat with your right arm and left leg.
3 The Plank
Start on your hands and knees. Lower yourself down so that you are resting on your forearms. Stretch out your legs backwards. Make your head, neck and your back in a line, placing your shoulders directly above your elbows. Hold for as many breaths as you can.
4 The Superman
Lie on the floor on your stomach. Place a rolled up towel under your hips to support your back. Raise your right arm off the floor. Hold for several deep breaths. Lower your right arm and repeat with your left. Then raise your right leg off the floor. Hold for several deep breaths. Lower your right leg and then repeat with your left.

Recently I’ve received many emails in perfectly right English from Chinese readers. At first I was amazed at their superb English, but soon I realized they’d used AI. Such readers probably imagined they were therefore drawing nearer to me, but I felt the opposite.
As a teenager, I fell in love with foreign languages. Over my lifetime, I’ve worked on at least 10 languages, several for many years. The results have often left me highly upset, but also have given me dramatic joy when I absorbed some of the indescribable beauty of those tongues.
Why did I learn those languages? Out of love for every different aspect of foreign languages, sound, writing, grammars, concepts and so on. To me, it is a deep joy to try to internalize (内化) another culture, to feel what it would have been like to grow up in, say, France, India, or China. Through years of efforts, I have good mastery of some languages, French topping the list.
However, Chinese is another thing. I’ve struggled with it for many years, still lost in a group of native speakers. But if there were a magic that can make me speak perfectly, I would say no. I want to climb to the Everest of the Chinese language on my own. If I can’t, so be it. We try our best, and sometimes we succeed admirably, and sometimes we don’t. It’s all part of being human. Learning another language is one of the deepest and most human things one can possibly do. Language is at the core of who we are. Language makes us who we are. Maybe attitudes like mine are fading fast these days, but that’s how I grew up, and that’s how I’ll feel till my dying day.
4. How did the writer feel when reading emails from Chinese readers?
A. Surprised but close. B. Unbelievable and distant.
C. Moved and understanding. D. Unexpected but approving.
5. What can be brought to the writer when learning another language?
A. A nice chance to grow up abroad. B. Rich new ways of seeing the world.
C. Much deeper love for the mother tongue. D. An experience to contact foreign readers.
6. How is the writer’s Chinese?
A. It is still in progress. B. It is out of the reach.
C. It is as good as natives. D. It goes well like magic.
7. Which of the following may the writer agree with on language learning?
A. Better late than never. B. The journey is the reward.
C. Honesty is the best policy. D. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. A 7. B

【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“But if there were a magic that can make me speak perfectly, I would say no. I want to climb to the Everest of the Chinese language on my own. If I can’t, so be it.(但如果有一种魔法能让我流利完美地说中文,我会拒绝。我想独自攀登中文这座高峰。就算做不到也没关系)”可知,作者看重学习的过程,旅途本身就是回报。
C
Comfort food makes a person feel good. Food high in sugar or fat tends to improve mood by stimulating the brain’s reward system. So it makes sense that many of us may turn to food for comfort in times of stress. There’s some fascinating research that examines food as a source of comfort. However, the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than we tend to believe they are.
Traci Mann, a professor of psychology, and her colleagues conducted a series of studies with college students. The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve mood. They provided students with one of the three foods that they had indicated were their top personal comfort foods. After producing a negative mood by having them watch movie clips designed to increase their sadness, anger and anxiety, the researchers offered the students their comfort food.
They had to assess how the students felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better. All of the students completed the study on two separate occasions: once when they were able to eat their comfort food and once when they were able to eat another food they liked but they wouldn’t call a comfort food. The researchers found that comfort food did improve students’ moods — but only by a little bit and not more than the other food they liked.
The take-home message from the studies? While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to address emotional problems. Of course, everyone can indulge (沉湎) in a comfort food from time to time, but overall, aim for these instances to be the exception rather than the rule.
8. What was the focus of the studies about comfort food?
A. The level of its effects. B. The principles of its effects.
C. The bad sides of its effects. D. The significance of its effects.
9. Why were movie clips arranged during the research?
A. To amuse the students. B. To add a little more appeal.
C. To relieve the students’ stress. D. To create a negative atmosphere.
10. What did the studies imply about the effect of comfort food?
A. It works slightly. B. It has a lasting impact.
C. It makes no difference. D. It matters more with films.
11. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To state a fact. B. To introduce a rule.
C. To offer a suggestion. D. To add a background.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. A 11. C

D
In Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, when pop superstar Jay Chou took the stage for three nights there last April, he did more than entertaining tens of thousands of fans.
The concerts attracted 141,800 ticketed attendees and about 28,000 fans who gathered outside the concert spot to enjoy the atmosphere. Data showed 85 percent of attendees traveled from outside Nanning. The three concerts generated 1.26 billion yuan in citywide consumer spending.
The figure offers a vivid illustration of how major cultural events produce ripple effects across hotels, restaurants, retail and transportation — far topping ticket sales alone. China’s live performance market reached 96.9 billion yuan in 2025 and is expected to go over 100 billion yuan this year, said iiMedia Research. “Fans from other cities traveling for a show might spend money on flights, hotels, meals, souvenirs and even extend their trips to explore local attractions,” said Jiang Zhao, the associate researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation.
Generation Z has emerged as the driving force behind the increasing concert economy, nearly 60 percent of young consumers willing to pay for emotional value — a trend that is reshaping consumption patterns. Meanwhile, the recently released outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) has identified the expansion of culture, sports and tourism consumption as a key priority. Cities are launching targeted policies designed to transform large-scale concerts and cultural events into fresh economic engines.
Zhejiang province, for example, has introduced different rewards this year for large-scale performances based on ticket sales, profit scale, and most importantly the percentage of attendees traveling from outside the province. Events that choose Zhejiang as their only stop, or launch their national tours in the province, may enjoy even higher rewards.
A single ticket could now offer discounted or free entry to scenic areas, museums and cultural sites, while also causing savings at hotels, restaurants and retail shops. China’s concert economy is rapidly growing as a major investment (投资) destination, strongly influencing investing trend.
12. Why is Jay Chou’s concert introduced?
A. To praise the contributions of big figures.
B. To prove the wide popularity of pop stars.
C. To show the growth of China’s regional tourism.
D. To illustrate the influence of the concert economy.
13. What does the underlined phrase “ripple effects” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Spreading and chain-reaction results. B. Unreal and continuing consequences.
C. Expected and uncontrolled situations. D. Increasing and depressing conditions.
14. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4?
A. Reasons for cultural consumption. B. Predictions on future cultural events.
C. Policies on economic transformation. D. Generation Z’s attitude to consumption.
15. What can we learn about Zhejiang’s measures?
A. They involve both rewards and punishments.
B. They work mainly based on national supports.
C. They aim to stimulate local cultural consumption.
D. They encourage the natives to travel to other cities.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. A 15. C

【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Generation Z has emerged as the driving force behind the increasing concert economy, nearly 60 percent of young consumers willing to pay for emotional value — a trend that is reshaping consumption patterns. Meanwhile, the recently released outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) has identified the expansion of culture, sports and tourism consumption as a key priority. With us long believing that talking plants are fantasy, new research has revealed something amazing: it appears that plants can communicate after all.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate. When a bean plant is attacked by insects, it releases tiny quantities of chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. When another bean plant detects these warning signals, it produces its own different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. ___16___
Surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. ___17___ They can also “listen” to the sounds from other plants. A chilli plant can tell if a neighbouring plant is helpful or unfriendly. Some trees make clicking noises under water-shortage conditions, indicating drought is arriving.
___18___ Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. While the Internet is a worldwide network of computers linked by cables and satellites, the wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (真菌). This fungal network links the roots of different plants to each other. ___19___ However, it isn’t all good news. Plants can steal food from each other, or spread poisons to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more about the secret ways plants communicate. ___20___ Maybe one day we will know enough to “talk” with plants ourselves.
A. Corn and chilli plants are two typical examples.
B. Who knows what surprises the future of plant research holds?
C. Scientists are doing experiments on how plants react to these warning signals.
D. It remains unknown how plants send messages through this underground network.
E. Others attract insects — the wasps (黄蜂) killing those harmful plant-eating insects.
F. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other.
G. More surprisingly, plants have an amazing communication system linking every forest plant.
【答案】16. E 17. A 18. G 19. F 20. B

【导语】本文介绍植物的多种交流方式:释放化学物质、发出声音,还存在地下真菌网络 “树木万维网”,植物可传递信息,也会互相争斗,植物研究还有更多未知等待探索。
【16题详解】
根据上文“It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate. When a bean plant is attacked by insects, it releases tiny quantities of chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. When another bean plant detects these warning signals, it produces its own different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away.(人们早就知道植物会利用化学物质进行交流。
根据上文“Surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots.(令人惊讶的是,植物还可以通过声音交流。人类听不到这些声音,但植物确实在发出声响。部分植物利用根部制造声音)”可知,本段核心讲植物通过声音交流,空前提到部分植物用根部发出声响,A项“玉米和辣椒植物是两个典型例子”举玉米和辣椒植物的典型例子,承接前文说明发出声响的植物类型,逻辑通顺。
【18题详解】
根据后文“Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. While the Internet is a worldwide network of computers linked by cables and satellites, the wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (真菌). This fungal network links the roots of different plants to each other.(科学家将这套系统称为 “树木万维网”。
根据上文“Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Plants can steal food from each other, or spread poisons to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.(然而,并不全是好消息。植物之间会互相抢夺养分,或是释放毒素攻击别的植物。或许有一天,科学家能研究出 “防火墙”,来抵御树木万维网内的这类攻击)”可知,空前介绍该真菌网络将不同植物的根系连接起来,空后转折说明也存在植物互相偷取食物、传播毒素的负面情况,F项“植物通过树木万维网可以相互分享信息,甚至食物”说明借助该系统植物可以共享信息甚至食物,和后文的负面内容形成转折对应。
【20题详解】
根据后文“Maybe one day we will know enough to “talk” with plants ourselves.(也许有一天,我们掌握足够知识,就能亲自和植物 “对话”)”可知,空后提到未来人类或许能和植物“对话”,B项“谁知道植物研究的未来会带来什么惊喜?”呼应后文对未来的畅想,衔接收尾自然。

Grandpa’s Old Chair
It was the annual cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside and outside until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Just then, John’s mom noticed an old chair that was faded and worn. That chair was for John’s grandpa, who had lived with them since John’s grandma had died.
“John, come and help me.” John’s mom sprang to her feet. “We’ll take the chair to the curb (路边). The garbage truck is picking up on our block tomorrow.”
As they attempted to move the chair, John’s grandpa made his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly tried to stop them. “No!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“But it’s so old...” John’s mom argued. “We’ll buy you a new one.”
“No,” he persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
John’s mom finally let go of the chair and left the room. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair?” John asked.
“You don’t understand, John.” His grandpa shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair with your grandma right here when I asked her to marry me. And I sat in this chair the night your father was born. Many years later,” Grandpa’s voice broke, “I sat in this chair when the doctor called and told me that your grandma was ill. I was lost without her, but the chair gave me comfort and warmth.” The old man’s sadness seemed to grow as he recalled that fateful day.
“I understand now.” John looked at his grandpa and said, “This is not just any old chair. It is more like a friend.”
“Yes,” he nodded. “We’ve gone through a lot together.”
However, that night, when John and his grandpa were asleep, John’s mom and dad carried the chair outside. It was a starless night. Snow fell silently from the black sky and covered Grandpa’s chair in a blanket of white.

The chair stood at the curb on the street, covered in snow. “Wait! Don’t take that chair,” he shouted. John then ran back inside and said, “Mom, you can’t throw out grandpa’s chair. It has been with him for decades and is like a loyal friend that has witnessed the most important moments in his life!”
Paragraph 2:
Hearing this, John’s mom looked at his grandpa and slowly walked towards him. She handed grandpa a tissue and said, “I’m sorry… I just didn’t realize how much it meant to you. John and I will bring your chair back.” They took the chair back inside. They placed it next to the fireplace so it could dry. John’s mom stepped back, as if seeing the chair for the very first time. “Mm... I guess it does give the room a certain touch of character,” she mused. John and his grandpa wholeheartedly agreed that the living room would be rather dull without this old chair.
