The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day, I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four classes without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth class changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing. But come on 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was afraid.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

Many senior high students know the feeling: you lie in bed at eleven, decide to check your phone “for five minutes”, and the next time you look up it is one o’clock. A recent study of 1,200 students in Jiangsu found that those who used their phones for more than two hours after ten in the evening went to sleep almost an hour later than the others, and felt sleepy in class four mornings a week.
Why is this? Doctors say there are two reasons. The first is the light from the screen. Bright light tells the brain that the day is still going on, so the body waits before it feels ready to rest. The second is what the students are doing. Games, short videos and group chats keep the mind excited; even after the phone is put away, the brain is still busy with what it has just seen.
Li Lan, a school doctor in Nanjing, has noticed something else. “The students who sleep least are not always the ones who study most,” she says. “They are the ones who never plan their evening.” In her school, students who wrote down a simple plan — homework first, then twenty minutes of phone time, then bed — reported falling asleep about thirty minutes earlier after only three weeks.
Dr Li does not ask students to give up their phones. “A phone is not an enemy,” she says. “It is simply a bad companion at bedtime.” Her advice is practical: leave the phone outside the bedroom, or at least out of arm’s reach, and do something quiet for ten minutes before lying down — reading a few pages, or writing down the three things you want to do tomorrow.
28. What did the study of 1,200 students find?
A. Most students go to bed after one o’clock.
B. Late phone users slept later and felt sleepy in class.
C. Short videos are the most popular with teenagers.
D. A phone is a bad companion at bedtime.
29. Why does the light from the screen make it hard to fall asleep?
A. It hurts the eyes of young people.
B. It makes the phone too hot to hold.
C. It tells the brain the day is still on.
D. It makes the screen too bright to see.
30. What does Li Lan’s finding suggest about the students who sleep least?
A. They study harder than their classmates.
B. They seldom use phones at night.
C. They need help planning their time.
D. They always stay up past midnight.
31. What does the underlined phrase “out of arm’s reach” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Not easy to see.
B. Not easy to charge.
C. Not easy to repair.
D. Not easy to touch.
D
Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward, turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to AA-head and map unknown environments.
The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots They are made of something like a ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.
When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls.
“The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴), giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted ring-bot meets a boundary — like the wall of a box — it will travel along the boundary.
The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human.
“Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.”
32. What makes the robot roll faster and faster?
A. The ribbon.
B. The central axis.
C. The shape and material.
D. The higher surface temperature.
33. How does the author introduce the new soft robots?
A. By explaining the robot’s working ways.
B. By quoting experts’ opinions.
C. By making some comparisons.
D. By offering reasons and results.
34. What is Yin’s attitude towards twisted ring-bots?
A. Unclear.
B. Supportive.
C. Disapproving.
D. Doubtful.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The New Soft Robots
B. Ribbons and Their Rolling
C. Three Creative Movements
D. Twisted Rings and the Axis

第二段明确写道“Bright light tells the brain that the day is still going on, so the body waits before it feels ready to rest”。
D 33. A 34. B 35. A
根据第三段“When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls.(当机器人放置在至少55摄氏度的表面上(这个温度高于周围空气),缎带接触表面的一部分会变小,而在空中的一部分不会。这会引发滚动运动:表面越热,机器人滚动得越快。” 周围空气的温度)时,接触该表面的一段带子会变短,而处于空气中的那一段则不会。这就会引发一种滚动运动:表面温度越高,机器人滚动的速度就越快”可知,其接触表面的温度越高,旋转越快。故选D。
【33题详解】推理判断题。根据第二段“The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人). They are made of something like a ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.(这种新型软机器人被称为“扭曲环机器人”。它们由类似丝带的材料制成,然后在末端连接起来形成一个环状结构)”以及第三段“When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls.(当机器人放置在至少55摄氏度的表面上(这个温度高于周围空气的温度),接触该表面的一段带子会变短,而处于空气中的那一段则不会。这就会引发一种滚动运动:表面温度越高,机器人滚动的速度就越快)”可知,作者主要通过解释机器人的工作方式来介绍新的软体机器人。故选A。
根据最后一段““Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.””(“软体机器人技术仍是一个相对较新的领域。”
根据第一段“Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward, turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to AA-head and map unknown environments.(研究人员开发出了一种新型的软机器人设计,它能够同时具备三种行为:向前滚动、像唱片一样旋转以及沿着围绕中心点的路径行进。这种无需人类或计算机控制就能运行的设备,有望用于制造能够自主探索和绘制未知环境的地图的软机器人)”以及全文内容可知,本文主要介绍了新型软体机器人——扭曲环机器人的相关工作原理和特点等。因此推断A项“新软体机器人”为最佳标题。故选A。
