Born in 1949, Diana Nyad developed an early interest in swimming and became a Florida State High School swimming champion. Like many young athletes, she dreamed of competing in the Olympics, but a serious illness ruined her chance to qualify for the Games. However, the disappointment did not stop her from moving forward. Instead, she turned her focus to marathon swimming. A naturally gifted athlete, Nyad was physically well-conditioned to endure long periods in the water. As a long-distance swimmer, she would compete not only against herself but also against obstacles such as distance, danger, cold, and exhaustion.
Over the next ten years, Nyad dedicated herself to becoming one of the world’s top long-distance swimmers. In 1970, she swam a ten-mile marathon in Lake Ontario, setting the women’s record for that course. In 1972, she broke another record by swimming 102.5 miles from a Bahamian island to the Florida coast. Then, in 1975, she broke a third record when she swam around Manhattan Island.
Nyad attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the stretch of water is less than 100 miles wide, it is rough and dangerous. After battling the water for two days, she was forced to abandon the attempt to protect her health and safety. Even so, she impressed the world with her courage and strong desire to succeed. For Nyad, the strength of her purpose mattered as much as reaching Cuba itself. “That was how she defined success,” she later reflected: “It didn’t matter that my swim fell short — I believed I had already touched the other shore.”
To her, success was never just about crossing a finish line — it was about refusing to back down from a dream. When Nyad eventually retired from swimming, she continued to take on new challenges: traveling the world as a reporter, writing books, and delivering public speeches about her life journey. Today, Diana Nyad still works to inspire others, just as she did when she swam the world’s most daunting waters.
56. What is the key reason that Nyad turned to marathon swimming?
A. She failed to qualify for the Olympic Games.
B. She wanted to find a less competitive sport than pool swimming.
C. She found she had a natural talent for spending long periods in water.
D. A health problem prevented her from achieving her original dream.
57. How is the information in the second paragraph organized?
A. By listing events in the order they happened.
B. By describing Nyad’s feelings during each swim.
C. By explaining why Nyad broke swimming records.
D. By comparing Nyad’s swimming speed with others.
58. What does the underlined phrase “fell short” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Ended in failure. B. Was stopped by dangers.
C. Was shorter than planned. D. Took less time than expected.
59. What did Nyad do after she finished her swimming career?
A. She trained young swimmers to achieve their Olympic dreams.
B. She reported on global events as a traveling journalist.
C. She shared her life stories through writing and speaking.
D. She advocated for safer conditions in long-distance swimming.
60. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the challenges of marathon swimming.
B. To describe the history of long-distance swimming records.
C. To tell the life story of an inspiring and determined athlete.
D. To compare Nyad’s swimming career with her later jobs.
C
“Look for the gap” “Move into space” Sound familiar? From the sidelines to the field, no matter the team sport, looking for relevant information in the playing environment can be as important as any other skill if you want to score. Think Allen Iverson, Scott Pendlebury, or Natalie Medhurst, coolly judging all the options before making important decisions. How do these excellent athletes become so great? As well as their physical strengths, their brainpower is an obvious advantage.
Regardless of whether an athlete is playing backyard cricket or Olympic basketball, their playing environment holds important information that must be found, explained and then acted on. Research conducted at Western Sydney University finds skilled players are better at looking for and seeing the options and what’s happening around them in the playing environment. They tend to look both at an opponent (对手) and at where they can move next. Less skilled players, however, might watch only one detail but not what is happening around them.
Skilled players are also often faster to make decisions compared to less skilled players; their experiences create more stored memories that help speed up their decision-making. Essentially, skilled players know what information is the most relevant to focus on and they act on it quickly.
Adding to this picture is new research that explores the negative impact of mental fatigue (疲劳) on physical performance. This work shows that our ability to exercise can be affected negatively after activities requiring long periods of thinking and mental effort, particularly when these activities are boring. It first considers the impact of using the brain so much that it makes you physically tired. This may be particularly relevant for coaches of young players shifting from the school day to training, especially if the day’s lessons have been complex. Coaches should therefore map out appropriate strategies by considering the amount of information they provide for athletes and the complexity of the tasks and instructions.
Overall, cognitive (认知的) skills, like physical qualities, are key to high performance and even play a role in identifying future potential. Cognition could be a reliable marker of ability over time and could provide some basis for prediction of talent.
61. Why are some great athletes mentioned in the text?
A. To compare different sports.
B. To highlight physical training.
C. To stress mental skills in sports.
D. To honor their achievements in sports.
62. According to paragraph 2, what advantage do skilled athletes tend to have?
A. Faster moving speed. B. Wider focus of attention.
C. More efficient teamwork. D. Stronger physical endurance.
63. Successful athletes make decisions quickly by ________.
A. referring to previous experience B. ignoring all outside distractions
C. learning from opponents’ strategies D. understanding coaches’ instructions
64. What does the author suggest coaches do after their players have had a hard school day?
A. Lengthen the warm-up for training.
B. Set the training intensity adaptively.
C. Prioritize physical over cognitive training.
D. Refer to their players’ previous performance.
65. What is the text mainly about?
A. The quality of sports talent. B. The overall training in sports.
C. The cognitive power in sports. D. The variables affecting sports.
D
In today’s motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated. Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett — “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” It seems that disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our life story that will ultimately end in victory
Nevertheless, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In other words, we fail to “fail forward”. We find ways to devalue (贬低) the task at which we failed, and become less motivated to persevere and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”, which was discovered by Professor Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that the “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism (机制). “Most of us picture ourselves as competent people, so when external feedback suggests otherwise, it poses a serious threat to that self-image,” he says. “The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the external signal, so we can reduce the inconsistency and preserve a positive sense of self. We do this even without noticing.”
If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don’t really want it at all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a sports trial, or if a publisher rejects the first submission of your manuscript. “We tend to explain away our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It doesn’t mean we should persevere in goals all the time. It can be healthy to change ambitions if the process is no longer making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect” may lead us to come to this decision prematurely, rather than hanging on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve.
Failures are unavoidable. By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and pretending nothing has happened, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.
66. What can we learn from paragraph 3 about the “sour-grape effect”?
A. It protects us from false feedback.
B. It pictures us as competitive people.
C. It poses a severe threat to the self-image.
D. It denies negative feedback to ourselves.
67. What is the author’s attitude towards failure?
A. Short-sighted. B. Wait-and-see. C. Objective. D. Skeptical.
68. What does the underlined word “prematurely” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Unhappily. B. Mistakenly. C. Hurriedly. D. Carelessly
69. Which statement would the author most probably agree with?
A. Don’t escape when our self-image is broken.
B. Don’t quit when goals no longer make you happy.
C. Never hesitate to replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.
D. Never forget to maintain a positive sense of self.
70. What is the main purpose of the author mentioning Samuel Beckett’s quote at the beginning of the passage?
A. To show the popularity of motivational literature in today’s society.
B. To introduce the common positive view on failure as a learning opportunity.
C. To criticize inspirational speakers for misleading the public.
D. To contrast with the following discussion on the “sour-grape effect”.
