With the seasons changing, now is the perfect time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff! We’ve put together a list of the best ones to visit across the UK.
Grosvenor Park, Chester
Every summer, Storyhouse theatre packs up their items and builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year’s programme sees an eclectic trio:
The Gangs of New York, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. I’m most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young. I don’t think this story has ever been staged before and it seems like a wild pick for a summer outdoor show.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. Seeing anything at all, backgrounded by the azure Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire
Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor concert hall and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But this summer, you can see equally lavish productions at the amphitheatre, located in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas.
Shakespeare in the Squares, London
Is there anything more luxuriously summery than lazing down to your local square for a bit of Shakespeare and a picnic? These guys do what they say on the tin, travelling across the squares of London with a new Shakespeare production every year. This year will be All’s Well That Ends Well.

One of the most amazing experiences of our Round-The-World trip was spending a night in the Amazon rainforest. Our adventures started on a sunny morning when we got off from our boat in Santarém after a three and a half day boat trip on the Amazon. Our guide Gil, whom we contacted weeks earlier, was waiting for us in the port. We were worried, as the boat trip took a day more than expected, and we didn’t have any chance to communicate with Gil, but fortunately he was prepared for our late arrival.
Gil was brought up in the thick forest, so he knows all secrets of this incredibly rich environment. With no tracks, we had to cut through the jungle to search for a place to spend the night. After a couple of hours, we found a big tree ideal to attach the hammocks (吊床) to. We cleared ground and hung up our hammocks. It was dark when we made fire for dinner. Gil stuck some branches of a tree to pieces of chicken and we cooked them in the fire. It tasted great with special cooking spice.
When the fire was out, complete darkness came upon us, and this was the moment when the jungle around woke up. We started to hear louder and louder the noise of crickets, scorpions, small birds and monkeys which were jumping from tree to tree just above our heads. Many times we woke up during the night, when small branches or leaves fell into our hammocks. We could not sleep deeply, but we enjoyed listening to the music of the rainforest, which was an unbelievable experience.
We got up at 4 AM to see the sunrise from a very special place. We listened again to the sound of the roaring monkeys, and we were left breathless seeing the sunrise over the jungle. On the way out of the jungle, we saw a deer crossing the road.
24.Why did the author feel worried in the first paragraph?
A.They failed to find the port in time. B.Their boat arrived later than planned.

26.What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning “the music of the rainforest” in paragraph 3?
A.Their sleepless night. B.The fear of the jungle.
C.The noisy environment. D.The unique charm of the jungle.
27.Where does the passage probably come from?
A.A news report. B.A travel guide.
C.A travel journal. D.A geography textbook.

I planned my first solo (独自的) trip during my year off. People at college had quickly formed travel teams, eager to plan the perfect Gap Year adventure with friends. As a self-proclaimed (自称的) lone wolf, I had decided to go solo. I chose Thailand — a good backpacking choice for solo beginners. Now years have passed, but I still remember the first day of that trip, clearly.
It’s 2016. 19-year-old me is seriously sleepy after three back-to-back flights to Koh Samui, Thailand. Holding a fresh melon drink in my hands, I find myself standing among a crowd of backpackers. I’m waiting for a boat to Koh Tao.
I reach the island after dark, before being guided into the back of a pickup truck with 6 other backpackers. There’s something particularly magical about racing through the forest with the warm night air flowing against your face. Every so often we pass a cafe or bar among branches and leaves; the towering trees move slowly past us. We race around the island for seemingly hours, cheering and laughing like madmen.
I finally reach my concrete (混凝土制的) home only to discover that, of course, there is no air-conditioning. I am serious when I say I now know how it feels to be inside an oven (烤炉). A combination of jet lag (时差反应) and impatience drives me to leave my room at about 1 am. I walk past the wooden houses to the beach. A few young people sit outside a bar on the sand, drinking beer and playing cards. It’s almost too easy to join them. So, there I sit. I’d finally done it, feeling the sand between my toes and watching the lights of distant fishing boats shine on the surface of the sea.
28.Why did the author decide to travel solo?
A.He preferred to be alone. B.He was curious about solo trips.
C.He expected to challenge himself. D.He was unable to bring a team together.
29.How does the author feel on his truck ride?
A.Bored by the hours-long journey. B.Excited by the sense of adventure.

A.He invites a group of young people to drink.
B.He takes a fishing boat out to relax himself.
C.He goes to find new accommodation.
D.He goes to the seaside to calm down.
31.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A.To encourage people to try solo travel.
B.To discuss the advantages of solo travel.
C.To stress that solo travel has helped him become braver.
D.To share his experience during the first day of his solo trip.

As China accelerates its large-scale land greening and ecological restoration, once fragile ecosystems are transforming into vibrant tourism destinations. Forests, wetlands and karst landscapes have become powerful engines for consumption and employment. According to the 2025 China Land Greening Status Bulletin, the country completed afforestation of over 3.5 million hectares, with the forest coverage rate reaching 25.09%. This ecological miracle has fueled a total industry output value of 11 trillion yuan, directly driving employment for over 60 million people.
This green transformation has created booming tourism markets. In Libo County, Guizhou Province, the Xiaoqikong Scenic Area — known as the “Green Gem on Earth’s Belt” — has thrived. During the 2025 May Day holiday, single-day visitor numbers exceeded 70,000, setting a historical record. New activities such as hiking, heritage exploration and transparent boating have extended average visitor stays from four-and-a-half to around seven hours, effectively maximizing local consumption.
Similarly, in northeastern Heilongjiang, Yichun City — known as China’s “Forest Metropolis”— boasts an 83.8% forest coverage rate. During the 2025 holidays, the city saw a 13.5% year-on-year increase in visitor numbers, while online tourism consumption surged by 369.2%. This growth was driven largely by “forest-based tourism” and cool summer retreats.
The ecological gains extend deep into rural revitalization. Currently, 19 Chinese villages have been named on the UN Tourism’s “Best Tourism Villages” list, the highest number in the world. Officials underscored that the nationwide “Beautiful China” initiative has successfully turned lush mountains into invaluable assets, leveraging eco-tourism to build prosperous and sustainable communities.
32.Which group of people would be most encouraged by the 2025 Land Greening Status Bulletin?
A.Tech entrepreneurs seeking AI solutions.
B.Job seekers in the forestry and tourism industries.
C.Historians studying ancient karst formations.
D.Urban planners focusing on industrial expansion.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The diverse biological species found in Guizhou Province.
B.The challenges of preserving world natural heritage.
C.The historical evolution of the “Green Gem on Earth’s Belt.”
D.The impact of eco-tourism on local consumption in Libo.
34.By promoting “forest-based tourism”, Yichun City is able to __________.
A.decrease the overall forest coverage rate
B.limit the number of visitors to avoid crowds
C.witness a significant rise in online consumption
D.replace all traditional agriculture with cool retreats
35.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.China’s Rural Revitalization: A Global Model for the UN.
B.Booming Green Markets: Forests Become Invaluable Assets.
C.The Xiaoqikong Miracle: Records Broken During Holidays.
D.From Fragile to Vibrant: The Challenges of Land Greening.

Tourism can be both good and bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of jobs for locals, but it may also bring some problems.
36 . Tourists have used paint, rocks, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Qomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourist sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love them to death”. I have three words for people like this: please stop it. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. 37 .
Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing the local people and life. 38 . They wander around and take pictures of local people without asking for their permission. For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students, and disturbing their studies. Another example is Sanlitun, a neighbourhood in Beijing, China. Some tourists love to party there late into the night, making it difficult for locals to sleep. I have three words for tourists like this: please be considerate. 39 .
The number of problems from tourists is endless: walking in large groups without considering others who need to walk by, crossing roads without thinking of local traffic laws, and many more. The only way to solve the problem of the terrible tourist is to make sure that you are not one. 40 . Remember, whenever you step outside your country’s borders, you are representing your country to the rest of the world.
A.Pass kindness along to future generations, not destruction.
B.Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible.
C.One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited a destination.
D.It is important to learn about local customs before you travel.
E.These actions not only damage cultural relics but also hurt local people’s feelings.
F.Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.
G.Some tourists care little about the daily lives of the local people around them.

At the age of nine, I was informed that my family would travel to China to spend the dreamed-of summer holiday. I was greatly excited — never before had I seen the Great Wall and the Forbidden City by myself, but I was to feel the amazing history of China!
In the days to follow, I pictured the grand palaces, the impressive gates, and the wonderful stories hidden everywhere. Then came the day when we arrived in Beijing. I could hardly wait to admire the most magnificent buildings I had only seen on TV. Beijing was really fantastic.
There was nothing like the incredible Forbidden City standing in front of me. Under the sun shone the golden roofs. The delicately-carved shapes exposed the mysterious stories of emperors and empresses. Moreover, at the sight of the huge courtyards, I felt like I had entered a fairy tale world. Something amazing stood everywhere — a dragon statue, a marble stair, a hidden garden etc. — and I couldn’t help taking pictures, eager to record all of them. My parents couldn’t help laughing when I pulled them from here to there, wanting one more photo.
The striking colors impressed me deeply. The pure yellow rooftops against the deep red walls looked majestic (威严的). The stone passages looked glittering, bearing the footsteps of hundreds of years. I felt a carved marble handrail (扶手), wondering how many people had touched it in over hundreds of years.
The Forbidden City was crowded with tourists who spoke different languages with the same amazement hanging on their faces. They appreciated architecture carefully, took pictures happily and thought deeply. Everyone really felt the magic of this time-honoured place.
With the dusk approaching, I followed my parents toward the exit. The sea of people overwhelming, I grasped my father’s hand tightly, feeling the noise, the heat, and the excitement in the crowd. Suddenly, I looked down at the large hand I was holding. To my surprise, I was not holding my father’s hand.

Dear Mike,
I’m glad to receive your letter. It’s true that my city has become a popular tourist spot recently. However, with the increasing number of visitors, some have complained about inconvenient travelling across the city. To solve this problem, the government has increased bus routes and introduced more transport choices like shared bikes.
Among all local attractions, I believe Small Park Scenic Area is the most distinctive. Its ancient historic buildings perfectly combine the city’s past with its lively present.
As an old saying goes, “Seeing is believing.” I sincerely invite you to my city and experience its charm in person.
Yours,
Li Hua

【参考范文】
In that split second, I was at a loss. Grabbed by panic, I released my hand immediately, my palm sweating wildly. I searched for my parents in the mounting crowd, but they disappeared out of nowhere. I was on the point of collapsing when a sweet voice comforted me. It was a friendly Chinese man that detected my worry. He knelt down to my height, patted my shoulder and asked in fluent English whether I couldn’t find my parents. Nodding “yes” to him, I saw him smiling kindly. Then, he told me to stay calm and offered to help me find them. When I perched on his broad shoulders at the exit, he told my situation to the leaving crowd again and again. Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice calling my name.
Helped by the kind Chinese man, I saw my father. He hurried through the crowd, his face pale with worry. Instantly he saw me he hugged me tightly. Meanwhile, my mother followed closely behind, tears of relief streaming down her face. Knowing what great help the Chinese man had given to me, my parents approached the kind man, gave him the thumbs up and expressed to him the deepest gratitude. Shaking “no” to my parents, he smiled warmly, waved goodbye graciously and disappeared quickly into the crowd. It was at the fleeting moment that thanks crowded in on our minds. We came to know that the beauty of the Forbidden City lasts long, while the inner beauty of the kind Chinese lasts forever. (247 words)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
With the seasons changing, now is the perfect time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff!
21.Which play fascinates the author most?
A.The Gangs of New York. B.The Importance of Being Earnest.
C.The Wizard of Oz. D.Little Shop of Horrors.
22.Where can you enjoy a play in the Pitlochry Festival Theatre this summer?
A.On the cliff. B.In the woods. C.At a concert hall. D.On city squares.
23.What is a proper choice for a Shakespeare fan?
A.Grosvenor Park and Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
B.Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Minack Theatre.
C.Minack Theatre and Shakespeare in the Squares.
D.Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Shakespeare in the Squares.
【答案】21.A 22.B 23.C
【导语】本文是一篇应用文,主要介绍了英国各地的户外剧场以及他们即将上演的剧目。
【详解】21.细节理解题。根据“Grosvenor Park, Chester”部分第二段中“The Gangs of New York, The I’m portance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. I’m most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young.”(《纽约黑帮》、《认真的重要性》和《绿野仙踪》。我对第一个最感兴趣:由Kieran Lynn编写,John Young导演的新改编剧目。)可知,作者最感兴趣的剧目是“The Gangs of New York”。故选A。
22.细节理解题。根据“Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire”部分中“But this summer, you can see equally lavish productions at the amphitheatre, located in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain.”(但是今年夏天,你可以在位于森林中并且俯瞰Ben-Y-Vrackie山的圆形剧场看到同样豪华的制作。)可知,今年夏天你可以在森林中的Pitlochry Festival Theatre欣赏到剧目,故选B。
23.细节理解题。根据“Minack Theatre, Cornwall”部分中的“This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare.”(今年将上演巡回演出的“Little Shop of Horrors”和较少为人知的莎士比亚作品。)以及“Shakespeare in the Squares, London”部分中“These guys do what they say on the tin, travelling across the squares of London with a new Shakespeare production every year.”(这些人做到了他们所说的,每年都会带着新的莎士比亚作品在伦敦的广场上巡回演出。)可知,莎士比亚的粉丝可以选择Minack Theatre和Shakespeare in the Squares,故选C。

C.They lost contact with Gil on the way. D.They met bad weather on the journey.
25.Which of the following best describes Gil?
A.Shy and well-organized. B.Experienced and reliable.
C.Knowledgeable and smart. D.Adventurous and humorous.
26.What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning “the music of the rainforest” in paragraph 3?
A.Their sleepless night. B.The fear of the jungle.
C.The noisy environment. D.The unique charm of the jungle.
27.Where does the passage probably come from?
A.A news report. B.A travel guide.
C.A travel journal. D.A geography textbook.

C

29.How does the author feel on his truck ride?
A.Bored by the hours-long journey. B.Excited by the sense of adventure.
C.Anxious about the new environment. D.Regretful about choosing to travel alone.
30.What does the author do when he fails to sleep?
A.He invites a group of young people to drink.
B.He takes a fishing boat out to relax himself.
C.He goes to find new accommodation.
D.He goes to the seaside to calm down.
31.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A.To encourage people to try solo travel.
B.To discuss the advantages of solo travel.
C.To stress that solo travel has helped him become braver.
D.To share his experience during the first day of his solo trip.
【答案】28.A 29.B 30.D 31.D

第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

【答案】
