energetic dog.Ho loved to run but had to sotuo for our kids'slow walks until it hit me:I
could build a dog wagon ()A fow days later,I transformed our old jogging stroller
into a two-seat dog wagon with a screwdriver. Now when Wendell sces me pick up his
harness (I built from old lcather belts,he races to the door, eager to pull the kids
around the town at a paco that thrills us all.
When I left my law career four years ago,it was a promise to my children:I may not
be able to buy you as many things, but you will know your father. So when we noticed a
few inches of water had frozen in a deserted lot,we grabbed our ice skates and made it our
own private rink. When my 5-year-old daughter became interested in ancient Egypt,we
turned pizza boxes into pyramids. When my 2-year-old son wanted to be RoboCop for
Halloween,I made his costume from recycled bottles and pieced his mask together from an
old bike helmet and a wash bucket.
Creativity rubs off.Not long ago,my daughter asked me to build her a horse, and I
made sure she was part of every step of the process that didn't involve power tools. She
helped build her wooden toy horse from start to finish-drawing the design, then painting
the final coat.Something that previously existed only in her imagination became a toy she
could ride.Every project we finish feels like the fulfillment of a promise-it's not the
things we create that matter but the time we spend creating things together.
24.Why did the author build a dog wagon?
A.To improve his craft building skills.
B.To meet the exercise need of his dog.
C.To recycle the broken jogging stroller.D.To provide a safer transport for the children.
25.Which of the following best describes the author's parenting style?
A.Imaginative and hands-on.
B.Traditional and safety-centered.
C.Encouraging and play-based.
D.Adventurous and talent-focused
26.What does the underlined sentence"Creativity rubs off"in the last paragraph mean?
A.Creativity lies in imagination.
B.Creativity calls for observation.
C.Creativity originates from daily life.
D.Creativity spreads through interaction.
27.What does the text advocate?
A.Valuing quality family time with children.
B.Replacing store-bought toys with DIY projects.

they seem like part of our lives.Pcople like and sharc these posts, and over time,
admiration can start to fccl like friendship-pcople like to think they know celebrities(
).Psychologv Today defines this phenomenon as a parasocial relationship(准社会关系)
-a one-sided conncction that cxists only in the fan's mind.First identified in 1956 to
describe telovision viewers feeling closely connected to on-screen figures, this behavior has
cxisted for ages.
Today, social platforms deepen this illusion (by offering constant.seemingly
real updates on the lives of public figures. However, what audiences actually seo is a
carefully selected version of reality, edited for perfection rather than truth.Despite this
created closeness, young people frequently view celebrities as standards for success. This
influence often unconsciously shapes everything from their self-image to their long-term
career goals.
These relationships are not always harmful. For some, especially those who feel left
out in society, seeing public figures with similar backgrounds can offer a sense of
belonging. These connections can inspire confidence and make people feel less alone. In
that sense, they can serve a real and meaningful purpose, offering comfort.
The danger arises when the line between admiration and imagination disappears. The
relationship becomes unhealthy when fans act as if they truly know a celebrity. They might
take planned posts as personal messages and develop unrealistic expectations.Furthermore,
these feelings now extend to artificial intelligence (AI).Chatbots acting like real friends
can produce deep emotional responses, making it harder to tell real human connection from
AI.
Admiration itself is fine.Music, sports and entertainment have long connected
communities,but that influence needs clear boundaries.Without them,simply watching a
video is easily mistaken for close friendship, and carefully chosen content is mistaken for
true connection.Parasocial relationships should remain what they are:distant and
one-sided.In a digital age where everything is designed to feel personal,we must
remember that it is not.
28.Why did the author mention the musician and the athlete in the first paragraph?
A.To reveal the market value of stars'posts.
B.To criticize celebrities'too-much-sharing.
C.To show an imagined familiarity with stars.
D.To illustrate progressive fan-star connection.

Bilingualism (has long been an attractive subject for researchers, educators,
and linguists alike. In the past, the concept of bilingualism was often tied to cognitive
advantages. But what's going on in a bilingual brain has remained somewhat
unexplained.
To dig deeper, two researchers from New York University,Phillips and Pylkkanen,
conducted an experiment to observe the brain activity of bilingual individuals who spoke
both English and Korean. They also examine single language participants, which offers
them a clearer picture of how speaking two languages influences brain function
What they discovered was nothing short of inviting.Contrary to common belief, the
brain of a bilingual person doesn't necessarily focus on one language over the other.
Instead,it operates in a smoother way.The bilingual brain appears to process information
in both languages with remarkable ease.adapting quickly depending on the context.
The most surprising finding from Phillips and Pylkkanen's study was how
effortlessly bilingual brains shifted between languages.Their research revealed that the
brain activation patterns of bilinguals were less tied to which language they were using at
the moment. This challenges previous assumptions that bilinguals would have specific
"mental separate areas"for each language, switching between them like different modes.
Instead, the brain activity of bilingual individuals shows less different separation between
the two languages.
For example, when switching between Korean and English, the brain didn't have a
stop or experience a mental block.Rather,it simply adapted. This is why bilingual
individuals tend to be good at tasks requiring cognitive flexibility, such as problem-solving

or multitasking.
For years, bilingualism has been associated with various cognitive benefits.Studies
have shown that bilinguals may experience a slower decline in cognitive function
compared to those who speak only one language. The ability to switch between languages
effortlessly may help people keep clearheaded, even in older age.
Despite these stimulating findings, some reviewers claim that the cognitive benefits
of speaking two languages are overstated and that other factors-such as socioeconomic
status or education-play a larger role in cognitive development.
32.How did Phillips and Pylkkanen carry out their research?
A.By making comparisons.
B.By researching on pictures.
C.By referring to previous studies.
D.By analyzing brain's structure.
33.What is the common belief about a bilingual person's brain?
A.It is often short of attractive context.B.It ranks one language over the other.
C.It always confuses the two languages.D.It balances two languages harmoniously.
34.What causes bilingual people to be good at multitasking?
A.Encounter of mental blocks
B.Mental adaptability of the brain.
C.Frequent language switching training.D.Mental separate areas for each language.
35.What is the reviewers'attitude towards the findings?
A.Indifferent.
B.Tolerant.
C.Objective.
D.Appreciative.

The Weight of Victory
The annual Maplewood Charity Walk was just two weeks away, and this year's
theme was“Stronger Together''.Evan,atwo--time defending champion(卫冕冠军),had
every intention of winning the trophy(奖杯)again.However,.Principal(校长)Miller'snew
rule-that all students must walk in pairs-threatened his plan.Evan complained,
convinced that being tied to a younger partner would ruin his record.
When the randomly drawn partner list was posted,Evan found himself paired with
Leo,a seventh grader. At lunch break,he looked for Leo near the water fountain, only to
realize the smaller boy was in a wheelchair.Stunned,Evan wondered how he could keep
his champion pace while pushing a chair. To his surprise, during their first practice lap(
道的-圈),Leo moved forward with surprising upper-body strength.forcing Evan to run
just to keep up.They quickly found a rhythm:Leo would signal when his arms were tired,
and Evan would take the handles;Evan would call for a break when his legs burned.
On the day of the event, the cool autumn air buzzed with excitement.Principal
Miller reminded everyone that the winners would be decided by the number of laps
completed as a team, not speed alone within three hours. It meant only laps finished with
both partners participating would count toward their final score. As the starting whistle
blew,Evan and Leo settled into a steady pace. Two hours passed, and most teams had
given up.Just as victory seemed close, disaster struck.Suddenly,Evan tripped on a rough
part of the track. He fell hard and felt a sharp pain in his knee as he tried to stand.Pain shot
through his leg as he held the wound, looking up at Leo

Dear Paul,
I understand your dilemma regarding joining the art club while your parents prefer you to
choose an academic club. Here are a couple of suggestions to help you reach a compromise.
To begin with, you might want to show them how art actually benefits your studies,
explaining that drawing sharpens your focus and boosts your creativity.Furthermore,
presenting a well-thought-out schedule can reassure them that your hobby will not compromise
your grades.
Remember,communication is key.Have a heart-to-heart chat with them,and I'm sure they
will come around once they see your sincerity and determination.
Yours,

第二节读后续写
Staring at his bleeding knee,Evan felt all hope of winning slip away.Sharp, burning
pain spread across his wounded knee, making every slight movement unbearable.Noticing
Evan's frustration,Leo looked up softly and whispered,"We've come so far.We finish this
together."Encouraged by Leo's calm voice,Evan regained his resolve.Gritting his teeth
against the stinging pain,he hopped unsteadily to grip the wheelchair handles. They struggled
forward in perfect teamwork,Evan hopping and guiding,Leo straining his tired arms to push
the wheels, lap by painful lap.The designated time drew to a close, and the competition came
to an end.
Principal Miller held up the lap cards and announced the result.A hush fell over the
crowd.Evan barely dared to look, convinced their injury had cost them the championship.
1
Surprisingly, their total laps ranked first, drawing loud cheers instantly. The principal placed
the trophy gently between the two exhausted boys.Evan smiled warmly, squeezing Leo's
shoulder tightly. At that moment,he truly realized victory was never a personal glory. It was
the shared trust, perseverance and partnership that made their hard-won triumph the most
meaningful one he had ever achieved.
1.M:Mom,I'm going to basketball practice after school today.

month.
W:That's wonderful! You've always been good at public speaking.I'm sure you'll do great on

W:Yes!I'm writing about my grandmother's journey from the countryside to the city. Her
story inspired me to work hard.
4.W:Excuse me,could you tell me where I can sign up for the cooking workshop this
Saturday?
M:Sure!Just head to the community office on the second floor of this building. It's still open.

M:It's amazing! My grandfather used to make kites like this. It's a traditional art that's not so
common anymore.
6-7 W:Peter,I haven't seen you at the school library lately.Where have you been studying?
M:I've been going to the city library downtown. It's quieter there and has more resources for
my history project.
W:How often do you go there?

M:History and social studies are very valuable. They help you understand current events
properly
W:That makes sense.What else can I do?

W:Back to the drawing board,I'm afraid.
M:Oh no,that's crazy-all the work I've done.
W:I'm sorry for that, but look on the bright side. He's ordered double the quantity. It's good
news for the company. We must be doing something right.
M:But my whole week's work-I will have to do it all over again.
W:That's business,I'm afraid. The customer is always right, especially when he intends to
spend more money.
M:I suppose you're right,but I don't feel any better about it.
18-20 Thank you all for choosing me as your class president. Also, thank you to Ms.Smith for
all her help. She's been with us ever since we were just young junior high school students.
Now,as we prepare to go to university,I think I can do some things to make us all enjoy being
here this year.It is not usually the president's job to make you study harder.Instead,I will
3
make sure we all have stuff to do outside of class. Our football field has no grass.Using
donation boxes at the school front desk,I will raise money to buy grass.People will pass this
box when they drop off their kids every morning. We have about a thousand students,so I
think this will work. Also, the previous president did a great job making field trips more fun.
For example,we all went to the history museum because he suggested it to the teachers.By
writing a survey for you to fill out,I hope to better understand what kind of field trips you want.
That is all I have to say today. If you want to ask any questions, you know where to find me.
