By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
01 Lead-in
A letter, a real problem
A new programme on our school radio
Communication Week · School Radio
Ask the Professor
Students drop their worries into the letter box, and the Professor answers them on air. Today, you are the editor of this episode.
First read the words right, then catch his advice, and finally write a reply of your own.
Today's first letter
To: Ask the Professor
Dear Professor,
Sometimes my friends and I argue,
but we don't know how to make up.
What's the best way to communicate
in this situation?
— Jason
Jason's problem:
He argued with a friend.
How can they make up?
Hold your answer — listen to the Professor first.
Before listening, do what every broadcaster does: read it right.
Think first: have you ever argued with a friend?
Q1
What do you usually argue about?
phones, games, things borrowed and never returned...
Q2
How did you feel at that time?
angry / sad / didn't want to talk
Q3
What did you do to make up?
said sorry / gave a gift / talked
You will answer these three questions again when you write your reply.
Know how it felt, and you will know whether to comfort or to explain.
02 Pronunciation
Broadcaster's basics: read the words right, give the sentences rhythm
What is a syllabic consonant?
A consonant + /l/ or /n/ → /l/ and /n/ act as the vowel; never add /ə/
a-pple /ˈæpl/ ✗ /ˈæpəl/ li-sten /ˈlɪsn/ ✗ /ˈlɪsən/
The cost of one extra sound
One extra /ə/ adds a syllable, the listener needs one more second.
Task: read after the teacher. Don't drag the ending.
Listen once → class repeat → one by one → pair check (did your partner add /ə/?)

Read with rhythm
Three reading rules
1. Stress the content words
(give / cat)
2. Pause after each clause (|)
3. Link the sounds: become your
→ /bɪˈkʌm jə/
Read-aloud challenge: one breath per sentence — make it sound real.
03 Pre-listening
Clear the words first, then open your ears
Four words to know
professor
/prəˈfesə(r)/
n. 教授
Eg.
the professor's advice
speech
/spiːtʃ/
n. 演说;发言
Eg.
a speech on communication
argue
/ˈɑːɡjuː/
v. 争论;争吵
Eg.
argue with friends
make up
/ˌmeɪk ˈʌp/
短语 和解;和好
Eg.

Put them together — this is Jason's situation:
He heard a ______ on communication, then ______ with his friends, and now he wants to ______.
Think and share
Have you ever argued with your friends and didn’t know how to fix the relationship(修复关系)? What did you do then?
Said sorry
Face to face talk
Write a letter
Send messages
Before listening: guess first
Two predictions
1
How many pieces of advice?
Two? Three? Four?
2
Which one will he put first?
Calling? Texting? Face to face?
Listening strategy: catch the 'if' signals
Every piece of advice starts with 'if':
If you want to solve the problem, ...
If you can't meet, ...
If it is still hard to talk, ...
Hear 'if' → note the pair:
condition + advice.
04 While-listening
Three listenings, three jobs: main idea → details → language
1st listening: what is it about?
Listen and choose the main idea.
A
How to give a good speech.
B
How to make up with a friend.
✓
C
How to learn English well.
Watch three words
argue
make up
advice
Hear them,
the main idea is clear.
2nd listening: 2a fill in the blanks
Jason:Professor, thanks for the helpful speech on communication. I have a question. Sometimes my friends and I argue but don′t know how to make up. What′s the best way to communicate in this situation?
Professor:If you want to solve the problem,_________.
Jason:I understand, but meeting in person is not always easy.
Professor:If you can′t meet,_________. Some of you may prefer texting, but _______ if you′re not careful with your words.
Jason:But what if we argue more over the phone?
Professor: If you stay calm and say sorry, it will help. If it is still hard to talk, ________. Meet when you're both ready.
Jason:I′ll call and try to meet. Because friendship is important. Thanks for the advice!
Professor:You′re welcome.

take a break
Think
Why does he put
'face-to-face' first?
因为面对面能看见表情、
听到语气;
文字只有字,
最容易“读错意思”。
Feelings first,
then the problem.
2b Read the conversation. Answer the questions.
1
When did this conversation probably happen?
After a speech on communication.
2
What does the professor think is the best way?
A face-to-face talk.
3
What are the problems with texting?
It takes longer and can make things worse.
4
Why does Jason worry about talking on the phone?
They may argue more over the phone.
How many answers
come from an if-sentence?
Think again: does each piece of advice deal with the problem or the person?
2d Read it like a broadcaster
Work in pairs: one is Jason, one is the Professor.
Read along once, then swap roles. Give stars with the table.

Scoring: 16 stars in all. 12 or more, and you're on air.
Peer feedback: one praise + one suggestion.
05 Post-listening
Your turn: write a reply, then go on air
Three more letters — pick one and reply
1
Susan (classmate)
invites you to her birthday party this weekend
Task: accept, and say what you will do
2
A classmate
has problems with homework and really needs help
Task: give one specific suggestion
3
A friend
found a good place to go jogging
Task: invite him or her along, and fix a time
Before you write, ask yourself
1. What is the real problem?
2. What two suggestions can I give?
3. How do I want them to feel?
Six sentences, two jobs
Invite
If you can come, I'll be very happy.
If you want to make some new friends, this is a good chance.
If you join me, we can go together.
Advise
If you need help, I think you should tell your teacher.
If you talk to him, I think he will be happy to help you.
If you go there, you'll feel much better.
In common:
if + present tense, main clause with will / can / think. Pick one from each column.
Four steps to your reply
STEP 1
Pick one
Choose one letter,
circle the problem.
STEP 2
Plan advice
Write two specific
suggestions.
STEP 3
Build turns
Greeting — empathy —
advice — encouragement
— sign-off. 6-8 lines.
STEP 4
Read 3 times
Read it smooth, fix errors,
add feeling.
Where marks are lost
Only reasons, no action; advice without empathy; will inside the if-clause (✗ If you will come...).
Script template: fill it in, nothing is missing
Greet
Dear ______,
Feel
I'm sorry to hear that ______.
I know how you feel.
Advise
If you ____, I think you should _____.
If you ______, you can ______.
Cheer
Don't worry. I'm sure ______.
Sign
Yours,
______
While writing
1. One job per part
2. No more than three if-sentences
3. Use words you know,
not fancy ones
Model 1: a reply to Susan
Dear Susan,
Thank you for inviting me to your birthday party. I'm really happy.
If my parents agree, I'll be there at six. If you need any help with the food or music, just tell me — I can come earlier.
If you want to make some new friends, this is a good chance. I'm sure we'll have a great time.
Don't worry about the details. Everything will be fine.
Yours,
Li Hua
Why it works
① 先回应邀请,再接情绪
② 两个 if 句,都是具体承诺
③ “我可以早点来”,
比“我很乐意”更暖
④ 结尾给对方信心
⑤ 全文 66 词,没有难词
Model 2: a reply about homework
Dear Mike,
I'm sorry to hear that you have problems with your English homework.
If you need help, I think you should tell Mr Li first. He is patient and he knows exactly where your problems are.
If you talk to him after class, I think he will be happy to help you. If you want, we can also do the exercises together.
Don't worry. You'll get better soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
What is new here
① 先接住难处
(sorry to hear that)
② 建议分层:
先找老师,再一起练
③ “If you want, we can...”
把帮助落到实处
④ 结尾一句,让人安心
The Professor's last words
生气时说的话,
往往是最后悔的话。
所以第一条建议不是“讲道理”,
而是“当面谈”——
先让对方看见你的表情,
再让他听见你的话。
Different people,
different ways.
