Qian Xuesen was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province on December 11,1911. In 1929, Qian placed third in the national college entrance examination and got a chance to attend Shanghai Jiao Tong University. There, he received a degree in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on railroad administration. In 1932, Shanghai was bombed and invaded by Japan. Qian graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1934, and the following year he left China for graduate study in the US.
In an age before computers, Qian’s ability to quickly perform complex calculations attracted a group of rocket scientists at California Institute of Technology. Qian joined them and received his PhD. degree in both aerospace and mathematics three years later. After he graduated, he became a professor as well as a researcher who studied rockets and missile (导弹) theories.
In 1949, when the news of the birth of the People’s Republic of China came to the United States, Qian Xuesen and his wife decided to return to China. In 1950, when they were ready to return home, they were stopped by US officials and sent to prison. With the help of Chinese government and his friends, he finally returned home.
When he returned to China in 1955, our country’s space research was almost deserted. In 1956, he set up the first research institute of rockets and missile. And he personally trained the first generation of China’s aerospace engineers. He was a pioneer and was honored as “The father of China’s missile”. He is the pride of the Chinese people. Today, plenty of energy is needed in our daily life, so we have to look for new ways to produce energy. Luckily, Chinese scientists are working on a green-energy project — photovoltaic (光伏) roads. The world’s first test road of this kind appeared in Jinan, Shandong, and it may offer us a new way of producing clean energy on public roads.
Photovoltaic roads are special road surfaces with solar panels Unlike common roads built only for traffic, these new-style roads can be used for another reason. First, cars and buses can run safely on them. Second, they take in sunlight and turn solar energy into electricity. The power they create can light street-lights, supply nearby public buildings or be sent into the city power network.
Photovoltaic roads bring several clear advantages. Since roads spread all over cities, engineers do not need huge pieces of extra land to set up solar equipment (设备). Besides, energy from the sun is renewable Once built, a photovoltaic road can produce clean power year after year without burning coal or gas. This helps greatly to cut down pollution.
However, this new technology still faces great challenges. The solar panels on roads are easily damaged by heavy traffic. Dust and rainwater may also cover the road surface and reduce power production. Engineers are testing strong protective layers (保护层) to solve these problems. High building costs also slow down its development. It will take much time before photovoltaic roads can be widely used across the country.
Many experts hold the view that photovoltaic roads have a bright future. With technology improvements, they may become an important part of China’s green-energy plan. Although we still have a long way to go, this creative idea shows how humans can make full use of public space for a greener world.
14. What is the main purpose of photovoltaic roads according to the passage?
A. To reduce traffic accidents on city roads.
B. To provide new parking spaces for city cars.
C. To carry traffic and create clean solar power.
D. To store plenty of digital information for cities.
15. According to Paragraph 4, which of the following is TRUE about photovoltaic roads?
A. Photovoltaic roads are widely used in many cities now.
B. Dust on the surface cannot influence the production of electricity.
C. More than one difficulty is slowing the development of photovoltaic roads.
D. Engineers have found perfect protective layers to stop panels from being damaged.
16. Which picture can best show the working process of a photovoltaic road?
A. B.
C. D.
17. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Photovoltaic roads can avoid power-production losses.
B. Lower costs may help photovoltaic roads develop faster.
C. Many cities are testing this kind of road all around China.
D. Engineers are now testing strong protective layers to solve the problems.

A Special Birthday Gift
It was my 14th birthday. I had hoped for a new smartphone, but my parents gave me something different — a piggy bank and a notebook. At first, I felt disappointed. “What’s this?” I asked. My father smiled and said, “This is a start to your financial journey. We want you to learn how to manage money.”
He explained that I should put all my pocket money into the piggy bank and write down every expense in the notebook. “This way, you’ll know where your money goes,” he said. My mother added, “If you save 20 yuan every week, by the end of the year, you’ll have enough to buy the smartphone you want.”
I decided to try. Every week, I saved 20 yuan from my 50 yuan pocket money. I wrote down everything I bought: a pen for 3 yuan, a snack for 2 yuan, and so on. After three months, I had saved 240 yuan. I felt a sense of achievement. I also found that I didn’t waste money on unnecessary things anymore.
On the last day of the year, I counted my money: 960 yuan! It was almost enough for the smartphone. My parents were very proud of me. They matched my savings with an extra 40 yuan, and I finally bought my dream phone. But more importantly, I learned the value of saving and managing money. Now, I still keep a spending diary and make a budget every month.

根据第一段中“In 1929…he received a degree in mechanical engineering…”以及“…in 1934, and the following year he left China for graduate study in the US.”、第二段中“…Qian’s ability to quickly perform complex calculations attracted a group of rocket scientists at California Institute of technology.”、第三段中“In 1950, when they were ready to return home, they are stopped by US officials and sent to prison. ”以及第四段中“In 1956, he set up the first research institute of rockets and missile.”
根据第四段第二、三句“In 1956, he set up the first research institute of rockets and missile. And he personally trained the first generation of China’s aerospace engineers.”
根据第三段第二句“In 1950, when they were ready to return home, they were stopped by US officials and sent to prison.”

根据前文提及她初中成绩优异以及文末“The challenge is to become…”
根据后文“she knew it would be difficult for her to be selected”可知,竞选啦啦队员的竞争非常激烈,对手们都身怀才艺,应选用talented表示“有才华的;有天赋的”。
根据前文“Her heart got down as the list ended without her name”可知,初试落选让Amy的心情跌入谷底,感觉糟糕透顶,应选用awful表示“难过的;糟糕的”。
根据空后的“math”以及下文“She moved on to English and history”的承接可知,此处是固定短语start with sth.,表示“从…… for“为了”,of“关于”,in“在……
Smith的回答“we have…writers for the newspaper already”可知,Amy想要应聘的是学校的校报团队,应选用newspaper与school构成school newspaper,表示“校报”。
根据后文“Come back next year and we'll talk then”拒绝接收新成员的态度可知,校报目前的撰稿人手已经满员充裕,形容词enough意为“足够的”,应选用enough修饰writers表示人员已饱和。
根据前文“Amy tried hard to work on the problems that had given her so much trouble”可知,Amy在课上刻苦钻研困扰自己的难题,最终理解了正确的解题方法,固定搭配get sth. right意为“把某事做对;把题目解答正确”,应选用right表示“正确的”。
