It is a strange feeling to know your own country only as a child and to become an adult on foreign ___46___. I experienced very little culture ___47___ upon arriving in 1998 because I knew very little about China. I had no expectations. Just live and learn. I arrived in China as a college student at Nanjing University. On my first day living at the student dormitory, I went downstairs to the convenience store to buy a (n) ___48___ of chips. I came back five minutes later to buy a Coke. As a joke, I said to the cashier, “Long time no see!” She ___49___ corrected me and said. “No, you were here five minutes ago.” That was lesson number one in China: irony does not ___50___. Soon after, a local friend invited me to his house for my first ever lunch in a Chinese home. His father finished eating first, put down his bowl and chopsticks and said to me man man chi (“Eat slowly”). I was ___51___ I didn’t realise this was part of Chinese table manners. He wanted to express that just because he was done eating, I should not feel ___52___, to finish. I thought, “Am I eating too fast? Why does he care about the speed at which I eat?” After they explained it to me, I learned my second important lesson: to learn the language, one has to learn the culture. I had already studied the language for three years before I came to China, but there was so much I didn’t understand. Why were people putting food into my rice bowl? Why were people at the table telling me when I could and couldn’t drink my cup of beer? Why was it okay for everyone to spit things out ___53___ onto the table, but they covered up their mouths with their free hand when using a toothpick to be polite? Living my adult life in a foreign country has become a lifelong learning process. Chinese ___54___ have now become my own. They are so deeply ____55____ in my daily routine that I do not think about them. And it’s not just the little things. The way I see society, government, and personal relationships has all changed. The culture shock happens when I go back to America. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) We recently went to a friend’s backyard to meet her new puppy. He was lovely beyond words. Our friend was wearing smiles as she told us about his first days at home. It was truly puppy love. Later that night, I walked behind my own dog to help her climb up the stairs, and heated up the homemade food that helps control her kidney (肾) disease. You can’t imagine these extra cares when you began raising a puppy. For me, I am lucky to know this more “mature” love. To love, and to be loved, by an old dog is truly an honor. For a long time, I denied the fact that our dog was getting old, or I really didn’t notice that Skyler was getting older. But these days, there is no denying the fact. Sometimes, she will fall while eating from her bowl and wait patiently for someone to help her up. I still remember the first days of Skyler. In the home, she always needed to be beside someone, with at least one part of her touching one part of you. At the park, it was different. If we started running toward the end of a field, she would cross the finish line before we had even made it halfway. Now, at 15, Skyler still needs to be right beside you on the couch. But it is hard. It is sad to see this once fast, strong dog struggle to walk up the front steps or to see her begging eyes whenever she needs help to get up on the couch. Over the past few years, we have had to give up certain family trips because we wanted to take care of her at home. However, I know this experience has taught our children about sacrifice and unconditional love. It has taught me the same. Dogs give us unconditional love. The least we can do is give it back. There will likely be times of great sadness and hardship, but in the end, you will feel very lucky for the time you have together. 71. In paragraph 2, why does the author mention what she did late that night? A. To complain about the troubles of raising a dog. B. To show her regret of meeting her friend’s new puppy. C. To tell readers that she is taking care of an old sick dog. D. To describe the correct way of caring for dogs. 72. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. When the author first got Skyler, she was always running in the house. B. Skyler has always been eager to have people beside her in the home. C. Skyler will beg for some food before she gets up. D. To take care of Skyler, the author often brings her during the journey. 73. According to the passage, what does the author think of keeping a dog? A. She is strongly against keeping a dog. B. She considers it a double-edged sword to keep a dog. C. She suggests we should think twice before keeping a dog. D. She thinks keeping a dog is worthwhile for the whole family. 74. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. A Friend’s New Puppy B. The Honor of Loving an Old Dog C. How to Care for a Sick Dog D. (C) The term culture now is more used to describe everything from the fine arts to the outlook of a business group or a sports team. In its original sense, however, culture includes all identifying aspects of a racial group, nation, or empire: its physical environment, history, and traditions, its social rules and economic structure, and its religious beliefs and arts. The central beliefs and customs of a group are handed down from one generation to another. It is for this reason that most people regard culture as learned rather than innate. People acquire a culture because they are not born with one. The process by which a person develops a taste for regional foods, accented speech, or an attitude towards the world over time, therefore, is known as enculturation. Cultures are often identified by their symbols — images that are familiar and coated with meaning. Totem poles (图腾柱) carved with animals and creative figures suggest aspects of the Native American peoples of the Pacific Northwest but more literally represent specific tribes. In Asia and India, the color of yellow is connected with temples while in ancient China it was a color only the emperor’s family was allowed to wear. Thus, different cultures may respond to a symbol quite differently. For example, to some a flag may represent pride, historical accomplishments, or ideals; to others, however, it can mean danger or oppression. To individuals unfamiliar with cultures outside their own, the beliefs, behaviors, and artistic expression of other groups can seem strange and even threatening. A society that judges all other cultures against its own standards is considered to be ethnocentric. A strongly ethnocentric society assumes also that what is different from its own culture is likely to be inferior and, possibly, wrong or evil. All people are ethnocentric to some degree, and some aspects of ethnocentrism, such as national pride, contribute to a well-functioning society. An appreciation for one’s own culture, however, does not prevent acceptance and respect for another culture. History documents the long-term vigour and success of multicultural groups in which people from numerous and various cultural backgrounds live and work together. Extreme ethnocentrism, in contrast, can lead to racism — the belief that it is race and racial origin that account for variations in human character or ability and that one’s own race is superior to all others. 78. The underlined word “innate” in paragraph 2 most probably means ________. A. avoidable B. developed C. managed D. inborn 79. Which of the following best describes the development of paragraph 3? A. From symbols used in ancient religious settings to symbols used in modern political settings. B. From symbols understood in the same way worldwide to symbols limited by culture. C. From symbols shaped by particular cultures to symbols open to competing readings. D. From symbols learned through cultural spread to symbols judged by ethnocentric standards. 80. What makes extreme ethnocentrism different from the ethnocentrism shared by most people? A. It appreciates various cultures and treats all cultures as equally worthy. B. It is based on national pride and contributes to a well-functioning society. C. It may develop into racism and a belief in one’s own racial superiority. D. It denies the value of one’s own culture and rejects all forms of cultural loyalty. 81. Which statement may the author support most? A. All aspects of ethnocentrism can produce negative effects on a society. B. Countries with a strong sense of national pride play a superior role in the world. C. Racism is unlikely to bring about serious conflicts among different cultures. D. Respect and acceptance of different cultures are a proper cultural attitude. Section C (8’) Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need. Good News for Gamers Video games can sometimes have a bad reputation because they keep people indoors and looking at a screen instead of talking and playing with others face to face. ___82___ Scientists from the University of Vermont used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) scheme, which is a study of brain development and health of children in the US as they move into adulthood. The results were taken from 2,217 children aged nine or 10. They were divided into two groups: young people who never play video games and those who play them for three or more hours a day. The young people were set two tasks. The first one measured their reaction times by seeing how quickly they could press buttons that matched images on a screen. The second test involved using their memory. ___83___ During the tests, their brains were scanned with fMRI, which uses magnets to measure brain activity. The people who played video games were consistently better at the two tasks, and the fMRI scans showed that they also had more activity in the parts of their brains that look after memory and attention. ___84___ However, it’s important to note that researchers don’t yet know if gaming improved their memory and reactions, or if they already had good memories and reactions and therefore enjoyed gaming and played a lot. ___85___The team could also perhaps find out in future if particular types of video games affect people’s brain activity differently. The lead scientist on the study, Bader Chaarani says that too much screen time is not good for people’s mental well being or physical health. It is still very important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, taking exercise and having fun with friends and family. A. This means that people who play video games show more brain activity. B. Compared with scrolling through videos on YouTube, playing video games surely makes brain more active. C. However, a new study has revealed that video games might be good for brain development in young people. D. Not all of gaming’s effects on the brain are positive despite the activated brain. E. The scientists are hoping to carry on studying the same young people as they get older to track the effects of gaming. F. They were shown pictures of people’s faces and then, a bit later, were shown more and had to say if any of the faces were the same.
