A Good Book Is a Good Friend
April 23 is World Book Day,a celebration of books sponsored by UNESCO to improve
reading and literacy around the world. On that day everyone is31(o pick up a book, sit
quiculy for a few hours, and just read.
When World Book Day first began in 1995,it didn't seem too difficult for people to just sit
and read for a while-but that was before social media took over our lives.Today, our attention
spans have become32 affected by the use of our smartphones and other electronic devices
that many of us are finding it difficult to focus on anything for more than a few minutes at a time
-a condition which is having a direct impact on our very ability to think and to learn.
One study compared the reading level of 13-year-olds a hundred years ago with 13-year-olds
today. It found that your great grandparents were reading at a level comparable to modern college
students.In other words,your"ancient"ancestors had a better33of vocabulary and better
reading comprebension abilities than you do now.And things aren't improving.
Another study found that, just a few years ago,37 percent of Generation Z read for fun,but
that number34 to 17 percent.School closings as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic may
have had something to do with that 35,but the influences of social media seem to be the
bigger cause.
I've always thought of books-real books,printed on paper-to be my friends.A really
good book, such as Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, would give me such pleasure that I was
36sad to have it end.But I would place it on my bookshelf with all my other friends.
Whenever I passed by that shelf and saw the book standing there quietly among the others,I would
be 37of that pleasure again.
Books,especially those of literature,are a(n)38.part of civilization.They contain
the wisdom and experience of the past and help us understand the present. They help us to
understand what goes on in the minds of other people-their emotions, desires and struggles-
and this helps us to be less 39 of the people around us.
On World Book Day,or any day for that matter, pick up a book and sit quietly for a few hours
and read. You may just40_a new friend.

C and D.Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Do you ever throw away food at home?Have you ever thought about what happens to the food
supermarkets don't sell?Well, you might be 41 shocked to find out that approximately one
第3页共10页
third of food gets lost or wasted.42,around 800 million people in the world don't have
enough food to lead a healthy life.
Many people are trying to do something about this 43 and make use of thrown-out food
that is perfectly safe to eat For example, there is a cafe in the UK whose meals arc all created using
44 food from supermarkets, including vegetables, fruit and other items. This unwanted food
is 45 delicious soups and sauces that fecd the hungry people.Customers simply pay what
they can 46,or help with the washing up.In just ten months,10,000 people were47
at this cafe, using twenty tons of unwanted food!
Also, last year the UK's first food waste supermarket opened. The supermarket works on a
"pay as you feel"basis;customers pay whatever they want for the produce.The48changes
daily but you can usually find things such as pasta, fresh vegctables and milk there.Some49
families said that it has changed their lives.
Some people50 "skipping",which means going to bins and finding food there to eat
Often the food is 51,within its use-by date and is perfectly fine to eat!
I have always been very conscious of the 52of food we waste, and very rarely throw
food away.I have had lunch at a food waste cafe, and it was delicious.I couldn't believe that it was
all food that supermarkets had thrown away!I have also 53 projects such as "Foodcycle",
using supermarkets unwanted food to cook meals for refugees.
More cafes like this are being opened in other parts of the UK such as Bristol and Manchester
and it is now becoming a(n)54 phenomenon.I think this is an amazing55 as food
waste is one of the world's biggest problems.I also believe that the law should be changed,so that
supermarkets don't throw away so much perfectly good food!

in college,a research study finds.
The group of three researchers put that advice to the test at Berea College by looking at how
much friends actually influence study habits and grades. They found that students who befriended
hardworking peers spent more bours studying themselves and posted higher grades during their
freshman year.
"It's no fun to study by yourself,"said Nirav Mchta, one of the study's authors, explaining the
intuition behind the study."If you want to goof off,and your friends are at the library, then you're
going to go to the library, too. And while you're there, you're probably going to get some studying
done too."
Of course,it's possible that studious people gravitate toward other studious people. They might
have hit the books and got as many A's no matter who their friends were.So the researchers checked
to see if randomly assigned roommates also have a positive influence on study habits and grades.
They found almost the same results:students who were assigned a studious roommate freshman
year also studied more each day and had higher grade-point averages.
Unfortunately, the opposite is also true, the researchers found. If you have friends and
roommates who don't study a lot, you're likely to get dragged down by their poor habits, studying
less and earning lower grades.
Analyzing friends and study habits is usually difficult for researchers. But students at Berca
College were asked to list their four best friends at the end of each semester and they kept careful
daily logs of their time, including time spent studying. At the beginning of freshman year, the
students were surveyed on their high school study habits. The researchers also had access to
roommatc assignments, high school grades and college grades.
From this information, the economists calculated the average amount of time each student's
college friends had reported studying in high school. They found that for every additional 10 hours
a week that a student's frieods had spent studying,on average, the student's own study time in
college would likely increase by almost 25 minutes a day,and the student's own GPA would likely
rise by almost a tenth of a point during freshman year.
56.The phrasc"goof off'(paragraph 3)most probably means
A.achieve higher grades
B.choose your friends
C.go to the library
D.be lazy about studying
57.Why did the researchers also study the randomly assigned roommates?
A.To further test the theory.
B.To figure out more study habits.
C.To put fonvard a new theory.
D.To get more students to work hard.
58.To carry out their research, what information did the researchers collect from students at Berea
College?
A.How many studious friends they have.
B.How they comment on their friends'grades.
C.How much time they spent studying each day.
D.How they thought of their own college grades.
59.What suggestion would the researchers most likely give college students?
A.If you want to do well in study, you'd better pick a hardworking friend.
B.If you want to get on well with your roommates, you'd better work hard.
C.If you want to raise your GPA,you'd better keep track of your study time.
D.If you want to have a happy freshman year, you'd better care less about peer effects.

"I've never met a human worth cloning,"says cloning expert Mark Westhusin from his lab at
Texas A&M University."It's a stupid eodeavor."That's an interesting choice of adjective,coming
from a man who has spent millions of dollars trying to clone a 13-year-old dog named Missy. So
far,he and his team have not succeeded, though they have cloned two cows and expect to clone a
cat soon. They just might succeed in cloning Missy this spring. It seems the reproductive system of
man's best friend is one of the mysteries of modem science.
Westhusin's experience with cloning animals leaves him upset by all this talk of human cloning.
In three years of work on the Missy project,he and the A&M team has failed over and over again.
The wastage of eggs may be acceptable when you're dealing with cats or bulls,he argues, but not
with humans."Cloning is incredibly inefficient, and also dangerous,"he says.
Even so,dog cloning is a commercial opportunity, with a nice research payoff Ever since Dolly,
the sheep was cloned in 1997,Westhusin's phone has been ringing with people calling in hopes of
duplicating their cats and dogs, cattle and horses."A lot of people want to clone pets, especially if
the price is right,"says Westhusin.Cost is no obstacle for Missy's mysterious billionaire owner;
be's put up $3.7 million so far to fund A&M's research.
Contrary to some media reports,Missy is not dead. The owner wants a twin to carry on Missy's
fine qualities after she does die.The protonpe (is,by all accounts,athletic,good-natured and
super-smart.Missy's master does not expect an exact copy of her.He knows her clone may not have
her temperament. In a statement of purpose,Missy's owner and the A&M team say they are "both
looking forward to studying the ways that her clones differ from Missy."
Besides cloning a great dog.the project may contribute insight into the old question of nature
vs.nurture.It could also lead to the cloning of special rescue dogs and many endangered animals.
However,Westhusin is cautious about his work.He knows that even if he gets a dog pregnant,
the offspring, should they survive, will face the problems shown at birth by other cloned animals:
abnormalities like immature lungs and heart and weight problems."Why would you ever want to
clone humans,"Westhusin asks,"when we're not even close to getting it worked out in animals yet?"
63.By cloning Missy,Mark Westhusin and A&M team attempt to
A.figure out the possibility of human cloning
B.find out the differences between Missy and its clone

D.show their love for lovely Missy since it has passed away
64.It can be seen from the passage that dog cloning
A.was conducted long before the sheep cloning
B.has gained an unexpected cold response from the society
C.has posed a great financial challenge to Westhusin
D.can generate an enormous wealth of economic returns

65.What is Westhusin's attitude towards what he is doing?
A.Careful.
B.Optimistic.
C.Passive.
D.Indifferent.

A.Current cloning techniques have proved quite adequate for human cloning.
B.The outcome of Westhusin's dog cloning project remains uncertain.
C.Dangerous as it is,cloning is an incredibly efficient method.
D.Westhusin thought it an interesting attempt to clone human beings.

A.But how did this happen?
B.What impact could instant noodles have?
C.Their rise in popularity has come at an environmental cost.
D.But Japanese people are not alone in their devotion to instant noodles.
E.Nevertheless, instant noodles are undoubtedly lifesavers in emergency or extreme situations.
F..Momofuku Ando,a Japanese entrepreneur, spent a year perfecting the recipe just after the
Second World War.
The History of Instant Noodles
What do a student in China,an office worker in the UK and an astronaut in space all have in
common? They all eat instant noodles. And they're not alone.Over 100 billion servings of instant
noodles are consumed globally each year, making them one of the world's most successful industrial
foods.
67
Put simply, they're cheap to produce and cheap to buy, which was exaculy what their creator
intended.68He wanted to make something similar to traditional Japanese ramen noodles,
while using the wheat flour given to Japan as food aid.His creation was instantly popular, playing
a part in Japan's post-war economic rise.Even in the year 2000,instant noodles were voted Japan's
most successful invention.
69 According to the World's Instant Noodles Association,China,Indonesia,
Vietnam and India all consumed more instant noodles than Japan in 2021.Instant noodles'
popularity abroad is in part due to how easy they are to adapt to local tastes. In Thailand, for example,
you can get green curry flavor, while in Mexico the noodles are gamished with lime and salsa.
Instant noodles have their critics,too.70 They're made with palm oil, contributing
to forest loss, and their packaging is plastic. And while they are a hot, tasty and filling meal, instant
noodles don't have much nutritional value, and include high levels of salt and fat.
More than 60 years after their invention, instant noodles have become the default food for
anyone short on money, time,or even a kitchen.
