During the design process,they met a lot of problems.For example,designing a
nuclear reactor(核反应堆)was really hard. They couldn't get help from foreigr
experts,so they could only depend on their own research. They used simple tools like
abacuses and slide rules(算盘和滑尺)to calculate and do experiments with great
effort.Another important problem was to make sure the submarine was stable

Some fish weigh more than a fridge. Some fish look like cows. Now,getting to
know these very special creatures is becoming easier. On a new website, called the
Encyclopaedia of Life (EOL),you will find basic facts on about 30,000 species-or
kinds-of fish.
But as surprising as 30,000 fish sounds,it's just a baby step for the website. Its
designers dream of making it the largest biological(生物学的)encyclopaedia ever,
with a web page for every living species.
单元测试卷Unit1第3页(共6页)
"Although there are already a lot of websites about living things, and a lot of
encyclopaedias too, they're not the best tools for scientists,"say the encyclopaedia's
designers.Scientists need websites with information that has been double-checked by
other scientists.A dream site would include links to all the basic research and also
automatically(自动地)update itself as new research is published..Finally,even
people who aren't scientists should be able to use such a site to get to know what's
living in their backyards or anywhere else in the world.
Think of it as one huge book that can keep growing in size-to millions of pages.
If those pages were made of paper, the book would become large and heavy and hard to

pages easily. Moreover, those new pages can be added quickly.

)23.What can be inferred from today's websites and encyclopaedias about
living things?

D.They are easy to search for information.
)24.What's the aim(目标)of the EOL designers?
A.To make the encyclopaedia popular.
B.To provide description of every species.
C.To give correct information to the scientists.
D.To challenge the other websites and encyclopaedias.
)25.Which one is the best title of this passage?

Digital Life
Digital life is part of our lives now.It brings both
good and bad sides. On the good side, digital life is very
convenient. We can easily find information online, shop
without going out,and talk to friends far away anytime. It
also helps us learn new things quickly. However, there
are problems too. Some people spend too much time on
phones or computers. This wastes time and can hurt their
eyes or sleep. Also, not everything online is true or safe.
I think digital life is useful, but we need to use it
wisely. We should not spend too much time online and
must protect our personal information. If we do this,
digital life can help us a lot.
