Slides are simple but always fun. All you need to do is climb up to the top and then slide down. But do you know that there is science behind this simple playground equipment (设备)?
①You climb up the slide and sit down.
You are ready to go. Are you sliding down? No, not yet. Things stay still (静止) unless something makes them ________. It is Newton’s first law. So you have to give yourself a push to start the journey down.
②Now you are sliding down.
Do you feel you are slowing down a bit? When two things rub (摩擦) against each other, they cause friction (摩擦力). Without friction, you will slide down faster and faster to the bottom.
③At the bottom of the slide, you come to a full stop.
Your feet touch the ground and add extra friction. Newton’s first law also says moving things keep moving unless something makes them stop. So, if you do not use your feet, you’ll fly off the slide.
Isaac Newton said what goes up must come down. He was talking about gravity. Slides work because of gravity. But that is not all.
11. How does the writer start the text?
A. By giving a fact. B. By giving an example.
C. By telling a story. D. By asking a question.
12. The best word for the blank is ________.
A. stop B. fly off C. move D. change direction
13. Which picture explains why you slow down a bit when sliding down?
A. B. C. D.
14. What would happen if you do not use your feet at the bottom of the slide?
A. You would stay still. B. You would stop immediately (立即).
C. You would add extra friction. D. You would slide uncontrollably.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Fun with a Slide B. Science Behind a Slide
C. Newton’s First Law D. Secrets of Gravity

Change is the only constant in our world. From how we communicate to how we work and study, new technologies and ideas are reshaping our lives every day. These changes bring exciting chances, but they also bring new challenges that everyone must face. How we deal with them decides whether we grow with the times or fall behind.
★ While smartphones and the internet let us connect with anyone instantly, some people feel more lonely than ever. They spend hours online but have fewer real, face-to-face conversations with family and friends. Another challenge comes from fast transportation, like high-speed trains and planes. They make travel easier, but they can also lead to heavier traffic and more air pollution in busy cities.
The way we learn and work is also different now. Digital tools help us find information quickly, but they also mean we have to keep learning new skills all the time. This can be stressful for students and workers. The pressure to be always online and the worry about falling behind can make it hard to relax. These are the real difficulties that come with a changing world.
So, how can we handle these challenges well? The key is to have a positive and active attitude. We should value real-world communication and make time to talk with people in person. We can choose greener ways to travel, like buses or bicycles. Most importantly, we should see learning not as a burden, but as a useful tool. Being willing to learn new things is the best way to stay confident and capable.
In short, change itself isn’t good or bad. It’s like a river — we can’t stop it, but we can learn to swim in it. The real challenge is not the change outside, but our attitude inside. If we face difficulties bravely, stay curious, and keep trying, we will not only get through the changes but also grow stronger, wiser, and more ready for the future.
16. What is mentioned as a problem caused by fast transportation?
A. It makes people travel less. B. It leads to heavier traffic and pollution.
C. It is only for rich people. D. It causes more traffic accidents.
17. Which of the following can be put in ★ ?
A. Challenges are everywhere. B. One big challenge is communication.
C. Nobody can avoid challenges. D. Face-to-face conversation is important.
18. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. B. C. D.
19. According to Paragraph 3, what makes learning and working stressful now?
A. Having no digital tools. B. Having too much free time.
C. Working only in offices. D. The need to keep learning new skills.
20. What might the writer agree with?
A. We should avoid all changes to be happy. B. Our attitude towards change is very important.
C. Technology is the cause of all problems. D. Changes are always bad for personal growth.

①Did you take part in any tree-planting activities this past March 12th? Or maybe you went to check out the little tree you planted a few years ago? Standing beside it, you might have been amazed at how much it has changed. It’s really great to watch a tree grow year by year. Even the tallest ones of them grow from tiny seeds. Have you ever wondered how?
②A full-grown tree may drop hundreds or even thousands of seeds a year. Inside each seed is something called an embryo (胚). Think of it as a small group of cells (细胞). These cells are ready to form roots, stems (茎), and first leaves.
③Once the covering around the seed gets wet, the embryo cells, which have been patiently waiting, suddenly come to life. They start to grow and break out. This is called germination. First, the roots develop and push out and down into the soil. This makes sure the new plant can get water from the soil. Then the stem grows up and makes the first leaves. As these leaves produce “food” in the sunlight, the plant gets the energy to grow more new leaves.
④Let’s imagine you drive a nail (钉子) into a tree at one metre above the ground. What will you see when you come back in ten years? The tree will be much taller, but the nail will still be only one metre above the ground. That’s because trees grow taller upwards from the top. At the same time, their trunk grows thicker outwards. It is like the tree has two different ways of growing at the same time. The upward growth is like a race towards the sky, reaching for more sunlight, while the outward growth of the trunk is like adding more and more rings of protection and support.
⑤As trees get older, they continue to grow taller and thicker. Guess how tall the world’s tallest living tree is? Over 110 metres! That’s as tall as a 30-floor building! Isn’t it amazing?
21. According to Paragraph 2, what CANNOT a plant embryo be ready to form?
A. Roots. B. Flowers. C. Stems. D. First leaves.
22. If a tree trunk grows thicker over time, what will happen to a metal (金属) ring put around the bottom of the trunk (树干) after 10 years?
A. The metal ring will go into the soil.
B. The metal ring will be higher off the ground.
C. The metal ring will move up and down along the trunk.
D. The metal ring will stay at the same height but may embed (嵌入) in the tree.
23. Which one of the pictures shows the stage of germination?
A. B. C. D.
24. From the article, we can find the answer to the question “________”
①How do trees get water from the soil?
②Why does a nail in a tree trunk stay at the same height over time?
③How many seeds does a full-grown tree drop in its lifetime?
④How tall can the tallest trees in the world grow?
⑤How long does a seed take to grow leaves?
A. ①③④ B. ①②③ C. ②④⑤ D. ①②④
25. Which of the following best explains the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. Tell stories→List facts→Give a warning
B. Ask questions→Explain steps→Share a fact
C. List problems→Study reasons→Offer advice
D. Share experiences→Show examples→Introduce features
D

Some people are very forgetful, while others can remember everything they have done. Scientists know a lot about how our brains store and remember facts and experiences. ____26____, which is equally necessary for normal brain activity.
A new study focuses on the process of forgetting. A team of researchers from the US studied the brain’s process of forgetting things. The researchers are cognitive neuroscientists (认知神经科学家). ____27____. On the one hand, cognitive neuroscientists’ work may help people who have memory problems. ____28____. The lead scientist Marie Banich said, “It may sound surprising that people can control what and how they forget.”
____29____. She also said it could keep the brain working smoothly. Her research found ways for people to remove information from their brain. She said, “____30____.” Removing information is important because it means we can focus on more important tasks. Too many useless memories take up brain space and slow down our thinking speed. However, although we can control what and how we forget, the act of forgetting needs a lot of effort. Another researcher, Sara Festini, agreed. She said, “We’ve found that intentionally (有意地) forgetting no-longer-relevant information from the mind is beneficial, but it doesn’t happen automatically (自动地).”
A. Banich said, “Forgetting is important”
B. But few studies focus on the forgetting process
C. And they have found many secrets of memory
D. Cognitive neuroscientists study the brain and how it thinks and works
E. We have control over the ability to remove information from our thoughts

Remember Chen-Ning Yang
The world of science is sad because Chen-Ning Yang, a great scientist and a true Chinese, died in Beijing on October 18, 2025, at the age of 103. He was a professor at Tsinghua University. He contributed greatly to science and China through his life.
Yang was born in Hefei, Anhui, in 1922. He studied at the National Southwestern Associated University and got his master’s degree from Tsinghua. Later, he got his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. After working in other countries, he came back to Tsinghua in 1999. He spent his later years teaching young people in China.
Yang’s work in science is very important. He and Robert Mills made the “Yang-Mills gauge theory”. It is a key part of the Standard Model of particle physics. This model is as important as the works of Maxwell and Einstein. Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee also did great work on the concept (概念) of “parity non-conservation in weak interactions”. They won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. They were the first two Chinese to win this prize. Yang also found the “Yang-Baxter equation”. This opened new areas in maths and physics.
Yang was also a great lover of his country. In 1971, he visited China and helped start academic exchanges between China and the U.S. He raised money to help nearly 100 Chinese students study in the U.S. Many of them later became leaders in China’s science. After coming back to Tsinghua, he worked on basic research. He believed in being simple and honest, not clever or flashy.
Yang’s life is more than just his science. He was a man who worked hard and loved his country. His story teaches young people to be brave in exploring and to serve their country with all their heart. Though he is gone, (A)__________________________

“Lying down”, also known as tang ping, has become a hot phrase among young Chinese people these days. The idea of low material needs and being willing to accept whatever life gives them is described as a “lying down” lifestyle.
Some young people complain that raising a child needs too much money and they often get into fights with their family. At the same time, the rising living costs including food and housing have pushed them so hard that they could hardly breathe. Some want to lie down because their tiring jobs, competition with peers, as well as personal relationships make them want to escape.
On the other hand, with the great improvement of living conditions, it is true that some Chinese youth today have lost the spirit of fighting hard for a better life. “I stay at home, sleep and watch TV series, and I’m pleased with what I have now. Actually, there are many people around me who value happiness and freedom most,” said Daisy, who left her job two weeks ago. No wonder that some young people would choose to live a simple life instead of always following the good quality of fighting hard.
Interestingly, most young people, who are “big fans” of the “lying down” lifestyle, point out that they only accept a temporary (暂时的) lying down as a short rest. In fact, lying down is not totally comfortable for them. Most young people who lie down always regard it as a lack of ambition (抱负) and feel ashamed about it.
“Young people have both ambition and confusion about their future, but most of us have refused to waste chances and challenges,” a college student said.
45. What are Paragraphs 2-3 mainly about?

Now, I can communicate with others confidently and get good grades.
In short, proper methods are the key to success. I feel proud of my progress.
