He stopped by and began talking to his neighbor through the family’s front door security camera. His neighbor, Brennan Ray, responded and told him there were some kids nearby. But that wasn’t good enough for Shayden. “They’re not my friends anymore because they’re bullies,” the boy explained. The two continued a brief conversation about whether Ray had children of his own that Shayden could play with. However, Ray’s daughter was just a baby, he told the boy. The conversation inspired Ray to post the video on TikTok, hoping to connect with the boy’s family. “You never know what people are going through until you take the time to talk to them. This young man is well-mannered, kind, and brave. So TikTok, can we help Shayden make some friends?” Ray said in the video. The post quickly gained nearly 69 million views. Shayden was diagnosed with autism and several other mental health conditions, according to his mother, Krishna Patterson. “People need to understand that these mental health issues can make children, and even adults, feel sad and isolated. Shayden has had difficulty maintaining friendships and sometimes experiences meltdowns that involve crying and accidentally hurting himself or others who try to calm him down,” she added. When these meltdowns occurred, people would say, “We don’t want our kids to hang out with your child.” After his visit to the Rays’ house and receiving kindness from so many people, Shayden said he felt “pretty good.” He has made friends from all over the world, including Hawaii, China, Australia, and England. Ray and his wife also started a GoFundMe campaign, which raised over $37,000 for Shayden. The money can be used for anything he wants, including a gaming setup, school clothes, and amusement park tickets. Shayden’s mother mentioned that he wants to donate some of the money to charities. As for Ray, his video has taught the world a valuable lesson in kindness and acceptance. 4. Why did Shayden go to his neighbor’s house? A. To test the security camera system. B. To report some bullies in the area. C. To have a casual chat with his neighbor. D. To find someone he could play with. 5. What does Ray think of Shayden after their short conversation? A. He sometimes causes harm to himself. C. He behaves just like other children. D. He can control his emotions easily. 7. What will Shayden likely do with the money raised for him? A. Make more friends online. B. Do something generous and helpful. C. Help build new schools for children. D. Save it all for amusement park tickets. C Start reading recent internet conversations about AI, and you’ll find a topic that surfaces with increasing frequency: ChatGPT delivered lifesaving medical advice. “Three weeks ago I woke up from a nap and found some red spots all over my legs,” begins one such account in a video from Bethany Crystal, who lives in New York. After an exchange with ChatGPT, it told her, “You need immediate evaluation for possible bleeding risk.” “What followed was a terrible three-day experience that got increasingly scary,” says Crystal, who was eventually diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder. She says she may not have gone to the emergency room in time if ChatGPT had not been insistent. Hundreds of millions of people now consult ChatGPT weekly for wellness advice, according to its maker, OpenAI. In early January, the company announced the launch of a new platform, ChatGPT Health, which it says offers enhanced security for sharing medical records and data. It joins other AI tools such as My Doctor Friend in promising to partner with patients on navigating health care. Many patients describe using different AI platforms to help with daily management of health as a complement (补充) to advice from medical professionals. Sixty-year-old Burt Rosen uses AI to help manage symptoms and treatment for the cancer he’s been diagnosed with. He frequently shows AI test results and asks it to translate them into comprehensible English. Rosen says AI has changed the relationship he has with his doctor. “When I go into a doctor’s appointment, I no longer need him to explain much to me,” he says. “My doctor’s appointment is much more of an action-planning session.” Of course, AI is not a replacement for a doctor. Doctors say that without clinical oversight (监督), misdiagnosis, misleading advice, or human misunderstanding are significant problems. Despite these hazards, they are optimistic about the contributions AI can make to health care and believes the benefits will eventually outweigh the dangers, if they don’t already. 8. What does Bethany Crystal’s case in paragraph 2 indicate? A. The popularity of ChatGPT. B. The significance of regular checkups. C. The lack of medical knowledge. D. The value of AI-aided medical diagnosis. 9. What do we know about ChatGPT Health? A. Its users’ privacy is better protected. B. It provides better health care than doctors. C. It has 100 million registered users. D. It is used as a tool by My Doctor Friend. 10. What impact has AI brought to Rosen? A. It improves the cure rate for his disease. B. It reduces his trust in medical personnel. C. It offers him real-time translation at the doctor’s. D. It changes the way he communicates with his doctor. 11. What does the underlined word “hazards” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Virtues. B. Risks. C. Signs. D. Reminders. D For thousands of years, human beings have relied on seeds and farmland to grow food. Ploughing (犁地), also known as tilling, is the process of turning over soil to bury weeds, loosen the earth and bring fresh nutrients to the surface. But ploughing, particularly over long periods, can erode (侵蚀) the soil and make it less healthy. This is where conservation-focused farming methods, including no-till farming, come in. Conventional farming involves sowing a crop into ploughed soil. Ploughing kills weeds that compete with crops for resources, such as water. It also buries weeds and dead plant material deep into the ground, where they are then broken down by bacteria and fungi. But herbicides, which are chemicals sprayed (喷) to kill weeds, became much cheaper to buy from the mid-20th century. This allowed farmers to kill weeds without cultivating the soil. And it paved the way for the no-till farming movement. Put simply, no-till farming is farming without disturbing the soil. It gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s as more people learnt of its potential benefits. These include: limiting soil erosion, keeping soil moisture (水分), protecting the large holes in the soil, and reducing our reliance on machinery such as disc ploughs and rotary hoes, and the fossil fuels needed to operate them. Supporters of no-till farming claim it boosts the amount of beneficial organisms and nutrients in the soil. They also say no-till farming improves water quality, reduces the risk of pests and diseases, and increases farmers’ income. However, there is a darker side to no-till farming. No-till farmers must use much more chemicals to destroy weeds that would otherwise be killed by tilling. Research has linked these chemicals with higher rates of cancer, birth defects, infertility and other medical conditions. In addition, research shows soils that haven’t been ploughed contain about 5% less stored carbon than conventionally-farmed soils. Even if no-till farming is better for the environment, it may not produce the yields farmers need to earn an income. One international meta-analysis found farmers’ crop yields fell by about 5%, one to two years after switching from conventional to no-till practices. 12. What can we learn about ploughing? A. It hardens the soil. B. It improves soil moisture. C. It is conservation-focused. D. It is double-edged. 13. What is a result of no-till farming according to the text? A. Fewer weeds. B. Poorer crop harvests. C. More soil erosion. D. More stored carbon. 14. What is the author’s attitude to no-till farming? A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Favourable. D. Uncaring. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. No-Till Farming: A Better Choice? B. Healthy Soil: The Key to More Produce C. Modern Farming: Less Work, More Profit? D. Weed Control: A New Challenge for Farmers 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Unexpected Benefits of Volunteering as a Family Are you looking for a way to bring your family together? In Emily White’s hometown, there was a yearly performance in the school hall. It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people. Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field. Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens—her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Emily’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable, It would make them uncomfortable, too.” Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired. This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try. Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day. Emily couldn’t sleep that night. A. A. Virtues. B. Risks. C. Signs. D. Reminders. 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. D. Weed Control: A New Challenge for Farmers 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. Believe in yourself.” Greatly encouraged, Emily practiced really hard. Finally, the day of performance came. Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily. “Emily White!” Someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out.
