I still remember the day when my family and I made time to return to my hometown. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal (水渠) ran past every orchard (果园) so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandmother took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservancy project (水利工程) was done, a policy was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
This reminded me of my childhood. When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because we were short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our country,” my grandmother replied. Shortly after, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside. ▲
Nowadays, people work hard to live in a big city. However, we should not forget our hometowns, where we are from.

②The villagers had to carry water from the river to water the trees.
③The writer found that the countryside changed a lot in many ways.
④In order to solve the problem, workers started to build the water conservancy project.
A. ②①④③ B. ②④①③ C. ③②①④ D. ③②④①

In 2020, at age 14, William Cabaniss noticed that some of his classmates were skipping meals due to food shortage, and he wanted to do something. To help his classmates and his community, he started making bottles of homemade vanilla extract (香草精) and donated 100% of his profits (利润) to his local food bank.
“No one should be hungry,” William said. “No one should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.”
William had been enjoying baking as a hobby. One day, while baking a pan of cakes and adding vanilla, he realized he could easily produce his own vanilla extract rather than buying it at the supermarket. Then he took the idea a step further by planning to sell the vanilla extract and donate all profits to the local food bank where he volunteered.
He immediately went to work putting his new plan into action. He used his own recipe to produce as many bottles of vanilla extract as possible during his free time. He then created a logo and designed a website to start the business.
In 2020, William invited volunteers to join him on his mission to fight hunger in his community. The extremely positive response allowed him to expand his program into a non-profit organization, Vanilla Feeds Tomorrow. The non-profit project continues operations today, and William donates the profit to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. Each 30 bottles sold provides about 42 meals to people in need, and the organization has raised more than $200,000 to date.
“There was no one better. They support so many counties across East Tennessee and, within those counties, there’ re so many distribution areas or food storage rooms and charities,” William said of Second Harvest. “Their range is just truly awe-inspiring. I wanted every penny to go as far as it could.”
23. What can we infer about William from the first two paragraphs?
A. He was forced by his school to help his classmates.
B. He was sad because his family was short of food.
C. He decided to take action after noticing a problem.
D. He believed that only he could solve the hunger problem.
24. What does the underlined word “expand” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Grow in size. B. Change in purpose. C. Speed up. D. Make more money.
25. Why does the author mention “Each 30 bottles sold provides about 42 meals”?
A. To show the price of the vanilla extract is too high.
B. To explain why William needed to sell so many bottles.
C. To show the great influence William’s project has made.
D. To prove that selling vanilla extract is a good business.
26. What can be the best title of the text?

Have you heard of the “Odyssey years” (奥德赛时期)? This term is getting a lot of attention these days on Chinese social media. On Xiaohongshu, the hashtag (话题标签) has already received 14.28 million views. Many young people are using it to describe the confusing time between adolescence (青春期) and adulthood.
So, where does this term come from? It was first introduced in 2007 by New York Times columnist (专栏作家) David Brooks. He was inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, an ancient Greek epic in which the hero Odysseus spends ten years wandering at sea before finally returning home. Similarly, the “Odyssey years” describe the long and confusing journey from school to working life, usually happening in one’s 20s and early 30s.
Today, many young people in China use this term to express their feelings of nervousness about what to do in life. They may change jobs often, switch (转换) between different ideas, and feel worried about their future. In our rapidly changing world, old paths to success no longer work as new directions are still being formed. This leaves young people facing more unknown changes.
However, there is no need to fear the “Odyssey years.” This period is not about failure and it is about finding your own path. Rather than seeing it as wasted time, many young people now view it as a journey of growth. For young students like you, remember: the “Odyssey years” are just another chapter in your life story. Take your time, try new things, and trust that every step brings you closer to where you want to be.

A. The term was created by a famous Greek writer.
B. The term first appeared on Chinese social media in 2007.
C. The term describes a period of confusion between school and working life.
D. The term suggests that young people should get the job as soon as possible.
28. From the passage, we can infer that young people today may feel ________ about their future.
A. sure and clear B. sad and negative C. worried and lost D. excited and confident
29. Which is the correct structure of the passage?
A. Examples → History → Solutions B. Introduction → Problems → Advice
C. Problems → Solutions → Examples D. History → Introduction → Advice
30. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain why the “Odyssey years” is a terrible period for young people.
B. To introduce the “Odyssey years” and encourage young people to face it positively.
C. To describe the life of Odysseus in ancient Greece.
D. To criticize Chinese young people for changing themselves too often.

A. To show the price of the vanilla extract is too high.

27. Which statement about the “Odyssey years” is TRUE according to the passage?
