Dear Peter,
Thank you for your letter. You asked me about my pocket money. My habit is to get 100 yuan from my parents every month, but I often spend it all before the month is over. So I decide to make a plan.
First, I will save part of the money for the future. I plan to put 30 yuan in the bank every month. In this way, I can use it for something important later. Second, I will spend some money on my study. I will pay about 50 yuan on pens, notebooks or exercise books. These are necessary for my daily learning. Third, I will use the rest for fun. Some snacks or a movie with friends can make my life more enjoyable.
By making this plan, I can learn to manage my money wisely. It also helps me develop a good habit of saving. I believe it will be good for my future life.
What about your plan? I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,

“Everyone has a problem with money,” Money began. “But most people think the problem is that they don’t have enough. That is wrong. The real problem is that they don’t believe in themselves.”
Kira frowned (邹眉). “What does believing in myself have to do with money?”
“Everything,” Money replied. “If you don’t believe you can do something, you won’t even try. You will look at a chance to earn (赚) money and think, ‘I can’t do that.’ But when you have confidence, you see opportunities (机会) everywhere.”
Money then told Kira about a simple tool: the success journal (日志).
“Every evening,” Money explained, “write down at least five things you did well that day. They can be small. You helped a friend. You finished your homework early. You learned a new word.”
“That’s too easy,” Kira said. “How can that help me make money?”
“Because you build confidence one small success at a time,” Money said patiently. “Most people spend their days thinking about what went wrong. They focus on failures. Their confidence shrinks. Then they stop trying new things. And without trying, they never earn more.”
Kira agreed to try. For the first week, she struggled (努力) to find five things each day. But soon she noticed something strange. During the day, she began watching for things she did well. Her mind was no longer hunting for (寻找) mistakes. It was hunting for successes.
Months later, Kira looked back at her journal. Page after page was filled with small successes. She read about the first dog she walked for a neighbor. She read about the first time she spoke up in class. She realized something important: she had not become a different person. She had simply started paying attention to a side of herself that she had never noticed before.

When the bell rang, Matt entered the classroom with a heavy heart. “Hey, Matt,” his best friend Tom greeted him. He and Tom were in the school’s basketball team. “Why the long face? Are you still feeling blue (情绪低落) about Saturday night’s game?” Tom asked.
“Of course I am,” Matt said quietly. He didn’t dare (敢) to look at Tom as he spoke. “I’m really sorry about letting everybody down. The other team got those points because of me.”
“Don’t be too hard on yourself!” Tom said. “Although you pushed their player, it was just an accident. Everyone knows that!”
Tom was a good friend. But Matt knew the referee (裁判) didn’t share Tom’s opinion. When the referee saw Matt push another player, he gave the other team two free throws (两次罚球机会). Matt was as shocked as anyone else when the accident happened, but it was too late. He couldn’t take it back.
“I guess we have to respect his decision,” Matt said after a while. “But we had a good chance to win until I made that mistake. Why wasn’t I more careful?”
“Listen, Matt,” said Tom, “try to look on the bright side. The other team is the best in our area, but our scores were really close. I’m proud of us, and I know our coach and everyone else in our school are as well.”
Matt felt a bit better. “Thanks, Tom. I guess it’s just hard (难受的) to lose.”
“Hey, you can’t win them all,” said Tom. “It’s more important to learn from your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them from now on. We’ll keep working together as a team. One for all, and all for one, right?”
“You’re right. If we pull together, we should win next time.” Matt smiled. He was lucky to have a friend like Tom!

Happy birthday to the Qinghai-Xizang Railway! Located on the “roof of the world (世界屋脊)”, the 1,956-kilometer railway celebrated its 20th anniversary (周年) this July.
Travel between the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and the rest of China used to be difficult. In the 1950s, camels (骆驼) took three or four months to carry goods (货物) from Qinghai to Lhasa, Xizang. Now, trains can do it in 48 hours.
The railway has helped business grow. Near Xining Railway Station, a market for caterpillar fungus (冬虫夏草) has developed. In the past, business people had to drive for days to Xizang to collect the herbs (中药). Now, people in Xizang can bring the herbs by train, and packages (包裹) from the market can reach many parts of China the next day.
Lhasa West Station has changed too. The area used to be open land with dirt roads (土路) Now, it’s a modern transport center with 11 lines that carry cars, home appliances (家电), vegetables, fruits and many other goods. Local products, such as apples from Nyingchi and Shannan, are also sold to Nepal by rail.
To protect the local environment, many parts of the railway are built on bridges so that wild animals can pass safely below. Today, then umber of Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊) in Xizang has grown from about 70,000 in the 1990s to more than 300,000. “Now, you can often see them running alongside the railway,” Hao Baojun said, who has worked on the line for 40 years.
But the changes do not stop there. Earlier this year, China started a new power project (供电工程) for the railway. As soon as it is finished, more trains on the line will run on electricity instead of diesel (柴油).
13. How long did camels take to carry goods from Qinghai to Lhasa in the 1950s?
A. About 48 hours. B. Three or four weeks.
C. Three or four months. D. More than 20 years.
14. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to (指代)?
A. The new power project. B. The railway.
C. Electricity. D. Diesel.
15. What can we infer (推断) from the fact that Tibetan antelopes often run alongside the railway?
A. The railway is safe for wild animals.
B. The railway makes the plateau too hot for animals.
C. The antelopes have lost their homes.
D. The railway has increased the number of camels.
16. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To advise people to travel by camel.
B. To explain how to grow caterpillar fungus.
C. To show that the railway has done harm to wildlife.
D. To introduce the Qinghai-Xizang Railway and its positive changes.

AI is also very useful when I write. Sometimes I finish an essay (过程) and feel that something is wrong, but I cannot explain why. Then I turn to DeepSeek. It helps me see my weaknesses more clearly, so I can revise (修改) my work in a better way.
20 We still need to check facts, revise our work carefully, and think independently. After all, AI is powerful, but with math, it still gets things wrong surprisingly often, which always makes me laugh.
