In August 2026, a heart-warming reunion (重聚) took place in the Mu Us Desert in Inner Mongolia. Yin Yuzhen, a Chinese farmer known for fighting desertification (沙漠化) , met Ronald Sakolsky, an American retired teacher, after 26 years apart. Their friendship began in 1999. Sakolsky, then teaching in China, saw Yin’s story on TV and was moved to tears. He raised $5,000 to help her plant trees in the desert. However, they did not get to meet each other face to face until the following year.
Over the years, Yin and her husband planted more than 50,000 trees with the money. The trees turned the sandy land into a forest. Yin named the forest “Saikaosi Forest” and put up a brick with his name on it. But she never forgot the American teacher who had helped her. In May 2026, she made a video and asked the internet to help find him. Within 48 hours, millions of people across China joined the search. They found Sakolsky and reconnected the two friends online.
Three months later, Sakolsky came back to China. On August 24, he and Yin stood together again in the forest. The small tree they had planted together 26 years ago was now over 10 meters tall. They planted a new tree together to mark their friendship. Sakolsky wrote “S” and “YIN” on a new stone monument, with a tree and a heart between them. He said, “This is a story written in Hollywood, not a reality. But we are experiencing this magnificent moment.”
Their reunion was not just about trees. Sakolsky also visited Luoyang, where he had taught in 1999. He met his former students, some of whom had become professors, doctors, and business people. He said, “Teachers plant a seed in students’ hearts. That seed grows into a tree and then a forest.” He added, “If a simple teacher and a simple desert lady can create this forest, imagine what more people can do together.”
When Sakolsky left China on September 1, he and Yin hugged tightly at the airport. Both had tears in their eyes. He said, “Any act of kindness, no matter how small, will never be wasted.” Their story shows that friendship and kindness can cross oceans and time. As Sakolsky once said, “Chinese people and American people can be one family.”

Time passes quickly, and many old traditions slowly disappear. Some young people hardly know stories from their hometown. To change this situation, a group of local volunteers started a project called “Voices of the Past”.
The volunteers visit elderly villagers. They record the old stories told by the elders. These stories are about local history, old festivals and special skills. They also take photos of old houses and traditional tools.
All the videos and photos are kept in an online digital museum. Anyone can visit it for free. The volunteers hope teenagers will look back on their local culture and feel proud of their hometown.
So far, they have collected over 200 stories. However, they still face difficulties. Some elders are too old to remember full stories. The volunteers spend lots of time chatting patiently to get complete information.

① What comes to mind when you think of archaeologists? Are they as cool as the characters in some movies? Let’s discover the world of archaeologists.
② Find places. Historical treasures are often hidden underground. To find the right place for digging, archaeologists do surveys to search for signs of ancient sites (遗址), such as broken pieces of ancient tools. It’s hard work.
