Many people take part in half marathons (马拉松), which are not as 21 as full marathons. But running about 21.1 kilometers is still not easy. That’s why it is surprising to hear of someone finishing hundreds of them in just a year. Edward Molineaux, a 34-year-old personal trainer from Willenhall, England, 22 465 half marathons in just one year to break the world record and covered over 6,000 miles 23 . His achievements included running six half marathons in a 24 day, which pushed his body and mind to their limits (极限)
Molineaux began running at 16, but didn’t take it 25 until he suffered a disease that forced him to give up high-impact (高强度的) sports like boxing. “All I could do was 26 ,” he later said. Running first began as a form of physical treatment, but then turned into a deep, lifelong love. “I love giving inspiration to other people, and that feeling keeps me going,” he shared.
To achieve 13 half marathons on a 27 basis, Molineaux followed a strict and tiring timetable: three run each on Monday and Wednesday, two each on Tuesday and Thursday, and one each for the remaining three days. He has 28 races with blisters (水疱) and tiredness, but he also developed a clear nutrition (营养) strategy for his “madness”: He avoided eating before runs, but took bananas for quick energy, then ate meat and fish at night to rebuild his strength.
Molineaux’s road to success shows the power of determination. He has become a 29 of hope and inspiration, proving that limits can be redefined (重新定义) through strong will and purpose. His story reminds us that true strength is not just physical, but the courage to keep moving 30 when life knocks you down.

Jake Pinnick, the 36-year-old from the United States, has an unusual story of “Becoming Chinese”. Now he is known as a foreign coach at Wudang Mountain in Hubei province, teaching martial arts (武术) to students from around the world.
As a fan of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, Pinnick always wanted to learn “real kung fu from its roots”. Attracted by a video of Wudang martial arts online, he finally made up his mind to come to China in 2010.
Life in China was not easy at the beginning. The training was hard, but he never gave up. By repeating every move countless times each day, he gradually realized that martial arts are never supposed to compete against or win over others. Instead, they help achieve balance between inner spirit and outer strength, just as his master once told him, “Develop virtue before practising martial arts.”
After finishing his five-year training at Wudang Mountain, Pinnick returned to the US with his Chinese wife and their daughter. However, he found himself “stuck between Chinese and American culture”. So in 2018, he decided to return to Wudang Mountain to teach and spread Wudang culture.
Over the past years in China, Pinnick has become completely used to the local life. He now enjoys drinking hot tea instead of coffee. He is also proud of his Chinese name, Li Zigen, given by his master.
Pinnick hopes to deepen understanding between different cultures through his efforts. With encouragement from his wife, he started posting videos online about martial arts in 2020. His videos soon got popular, attracting millions of fans. Now he is busy preparing for a new international summer camp. “I want to let people from all over the world enjoy the beauty of traditional Chinese culture and benefit from it,” he said.

Scenic spots (景点) usually hold various fun activities to welcome tourists. These days, real-life NPC performances have become a big hit in China’s cultural tourism.
NPC, or Non-Player Characters, first came from video games. It means the computer-controlled characters that talk and play with game players. These characters make players have more fun while playing games. Now, this idea has come to scenic spots. Professional actors dress up as historical people or local cultural characters, talking and playing with visitors in a natural and relaxing way. They are known as real-life tourism NPCs.
Lots of real-life NPC performances have become very popular online. The famous show “Snow Cake Monkey” in Changchun is loved by tourists for its funny, down-to-earth acts. In Suqian, the actor, who plays the ancient hero Xiang Yu, shows the special charm (魅力) of that time. Also, the funny local matchmakers in Kaifeng and the graceful Tang Dynasty actors in Xi’an make visitors’ trips much more enjoyable.
The popularity of these tourism NPCs shows that people’s travel needs have changed. Modern tourists are no longer satisfied with trips where they only take photos. Instead, they hope to have warm, personal connections with the place. These live shows can make tourists stay longer, help people spend more money in the local area, and make different scenic spots feel less the same.
Besides bringing money and growth to tourism, real-life NPCs help spread traditional culture in a creative way. By mixing historical stories with new interactive (互动的) forms, they make traditional culture easier for young people to understand and enjoy. This new trend (趋势) shows China’s hard work to connect culture with tourism, and pass down our cultural treasures to more people.
51. What are real-life NPCs in tourism?

B. Players who are controlled by computers.
C. Actors who play cultural roles in scenic spots.
D. Characters who perform in online video games.
52. How does the writer show the popularity of real-life NPC performances in Paragraph 3?

① They make tourists feel closer to the place.
② They make different scenic spots the same.
③ They help people spend more money in the local area.
④ They help spread traditional culture in creative ways.
A. ②③④ B. ①②③ C. ①②④ D. ①③④
54. What is the best title for the text?
A. China’s tourism NPC: A fun story about short trips
B. China’s tourism NPC: A creative designer of short trips
C. China’s tourism NPC: A new attraction of cultural tourism
D. China’s tourism NPC: A traditional form of cultural tourism

Minqin, lying in the city of Wuwei in Gansu, is sandwiched between China’s third and fourth-largest deserts. It is one of the country’s main sources (来源) of sandstorms. In 2007, then 26-year-old Ma Junhe started Minqin’s first environmental protection volunteer program named Save Minqin after reading in a newspaper that his hometown was at risk of being covered by sand within 17 years. The program started with just 60 volunteers. Last year, more than 6,000 volunteers planted suosuo trees there, most of whom were aged between 18 and 30, also called GenZers.
Zhang Liwen, an 18-year-old girl from Xi’an, spent five days planting suosuo trees in Minqin. “This idea came from my wish to complete a meaningful coming-of-age ceremony (仪式), but now I find value in contributing (贡献) to society,” Zhang said. The vlogs shared by Zhang are lively and attractive. Since 2007, over 80,000 volunteers have joined this program and they have planted over 1.52 million trees, making a green promise in the yellow sands. Ma Junhe said, “GenZers are more confident in achieving their dreams. One sunny morning, Ms. Green placed paper, scissors, and glue on a table. “Your task,” she told her class, “is to build a paper bridge strong enough to hold this small toy car.”
Some students, like Tom, were sure they could do it alone. Others thought it was a job for everyone. They gathered around the table, all talking at once. Everyone had a different idea. Papers were pulled, cuts were made too quickly, and the first bridge fell down before it was even finished.
The laughing and talking stopped as they began to feel upset. They tried again, but the result was the same. Then, Sarah, who was usually quiet, spoke up. “Maybe… we need a plan first?” She carefully drew a design on the board. Seeing the clear drawing, the class grew quiet.
This time, they worked differently. Jack did all the cutting. Amy carefully folded the pieces. Tom held the main parts while others glued them together. There were a few shakes, but no one argued. They helped each other change their holds.
Slowly, a strong bridge took shape. When the toy car rolled safely from one end to the other, a cheer went up. Ms. Green smiled but said nothing. The students looked at their creation, and then at each other. They didn’t need to be told why it worked this time. The proud smiles on their faces said it all.
