My Secret Weapon Against Adversity
We are all bound to encounter moments when life seems overwhelming. For me,my secret weapon against adversity
lies in embracing a healthy lifestyle-specifically,persevering in long-distance running.
Last semester, faced with severe academic burnout,I was overcome with anxiety. Not only did my grades decline, but
my confidence also hit rock bottom.Rather than shrinking from the hardship,I turned to my running shoes. It was the
physical exhaustion during a 5-kilometer run that surprisingly relieved my stress and cleared my mental fog. With every
step,it dawned on me that true courage consists not in avoiding pain, but in confronting it.Running has profoundly
transformed my mindset, equipping me with the resilience to bounce back stronger.
Therefore,I strongly recommend that whenever you feel trapped, you step outside and sweat it out.Ultimately,
physical well-being contributes significantly to an unbreakable mind.
My Secret Weapon Against Adversity
We are all bound to navigate periods of darkness in life. For me,my ultimate secret weapon against adversity lies in
composing poetry.
Last year, struck by a severe setback in a crucial contest,I found myself drowning in self-doubt.Instead of yielding to
despair,I picked up my pen, pouring my fragile emotions onto paper. It was the rhythmic flow of words that magically
relieved my anxiety and rebuilt my inner peace.Through weaving pain into verses,it dawned on me that true courage
consists in acknowledging vulnerability and transforming it into strength.
Therefore,I highly recommend that you channel your struggles into writing whenever you feel trapped.A creative
outlet will surely empower you to weather any storm.

读后续写参考范文
范文1:
Pal lookedup from his phone. His face turned completely red."Uh,yes,Professor,"he answered in a low voice. The
whole classroom became very quiet, and everyone was watching him.Keeping my promise,I pointed to the front of the
classroom with a friendly smile."You know the rule,Paul.Speakerphone,"I said.Reluctantly,Paul walked slowly to the
front. His hands were shaking a little when he dialed his father's number. The classroom was so quiet that we could hear the
phone ringing loudly. All the students held their breath, waiting to see what would happen.
Mr.Davis's voice came through on speakerphone, sounding quite surprised."Paul? Are you okay? You should be in
class right now."Paul cleared his throat, his face still burning."I'm fine,Dad.I just called to tell you that I love you."There
was a short silence. Then, his dad started laughing loudly on the phone.Let me guess-you were caught texting in class,
right?I love you too, son. Now,listen to your teacher!"Hearing this, the whole class burst into laughter, and the nervous
feeling disappeared at once. After that day,no one played with their phones in my class again. My friendly rule truly worked
and brought us closer together.(197 words)
范文2:
Pal looked up fron his phone.Caught completely off guard,a flush of embarrassment crept up his neck, contrasting
sharply with his casual pajama bottoms."Uh,yes,Professor,"he mumbled awkwardly. The classroom instantly fell into a
hushed, expectant silence.True to my word,I smiled gently but firmly pointed to the front of the room."You know the drill,
Paul Speakerphone."Reluctantly,he trudged to the podium, his hands trembling slightly as he dialed his father's number.
The rhythmic dial tone echoed loudly in the tense air, with every student holding their breath, waiting for the inevitable.
Mr.Davis's voice came through on speakerphone, sounding quite surprised."Paul? Is everything alright? It's the
middle of your class."Clearing his throat,Paul leaned closer to the device, his face burning crimson."I'm fine,Dad.I just...
I called to tell you that I love you."A brief, stunned silence hung in the air before a hearty chuckle erupted from the speaker.
"Let me guess-you got caught texting in class, didn't you?Well,I love you too, son. Now pay attention to your professor!"
The entire class erupted into roaring laughter, the previous tension melting away instantly. From that day on,my"middle
way"not only eliminated digital distractions but also wove an invisible bond of warmth and mutual respect within the
classroom.(208 words)
第一段(段首句:Paul looked up from his phone.):描写Paul被抓包后的反应(如尴尬、紧张、无奈等);老师坚
定地要求他执行班规;Pul最终拿出手机,拨通父亲的电话并开启免提,全班处于期待或安静的氛围中。
第二段(段首句:Mr:Davis's voice came through on speakerphone, sounding quite surprised.):描写父亲的疑惑与惊

The story begins in 2016,during the last semester of my philosophy undergraduate, when I
decided to become a writer after being inspired by modemn and classic works I was reading.I earned a
journalism master's from New York University, worked at Toronto Life magazine and freelanced.I had
some success interviewing the former mayor John Tory and reporting for The New York Times. But
behind the scenes,I was constantly stressed and struggling to make rent.
Then things changed. This past summer,a friend invited me to coach a small group of
11-year-old volleyball players for their upcoming club season.I always loved volleyball but pushed it
aside for academics, thinking it couldn't be a career.I jumped at the opportunity to coach.Every
morning in late summer,I met the kids in a park in midtown Toronto and trained them on
fundamentals:passing, setting and serving.I had gone from interviewing the mayor to playing
volleyball in a park with kids. How had it come to this?
Over the years, laboring in journalism had drained me of my youthful spirit.I had started writing
because it was a free means of expression, but the stress of making a living through it was endless.I
wanted to be serious and well-respected,but it defeated the purpose of following my passion.
Volleyball reawakened a spirit of playfulness in me.While shouting at the kids about techniques and
strategies I'd not thought about in a decade,I didn't have to sit behind a computer. The parents paid
me fairly and promptly and I didn't have to fear that my work would be outsourced to artificial
intelligence.
So I went all in.I found a gym space and started running my own clinics.I created an
organization called Super Volley, which runs sessions for athletes aged 5-18 every Saturday
Things are going decently well so far.Like many small businesses,I'm at the mercy of a rising
cost of living,a harsh economy and consumers who might devote their Saturdays to something else.
But I'll keep going because this volleyball thing rewards me in ways that go well beyond money or
journalistic fame.
4.What can we learn about the author's early career from the first paragraph?
A.He achieved great success in journalism without any stress.
B.He gave up philosophy to focus on journalism and writing.
C.He worked as a full-time writer after graduation.
D.His journalism career brought him both achievements and struggles.
5.What made the author turn to volleyball coaching?
A.The high pay from volleyball clinics.
B.The fear ofAI replacing his journalism work.
C.The stress and loss of passion in journalism.
D.The invitation from a professional volleyball club.

New technologies tend to cause a cycle of concern, disorder, and conflict before eventually being
accepted.Recent writings about artificial intelligence (AD)and other advances in computer science
suggest that we are preparing to welcome the final stage of this latest round of invention.
The Last Human Job,sociologist Allison Pugh's new book centered on caregiving and human
connection in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of these
technological advances, citing "connective labor"as valuable human work that will not be easily
replaced by algorithms ()"Absent from discussions about AI and automation,"Pugh argues,"is
the impact that these systems might have on the emotional understandings we build of ourselves and
others.”
Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connection and the importance of both
seeing and being seen by others."Practitioners (said they gained a sense of purpose simply
from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,"she observes. She then provides a
summary of how care work is being increasingly automated, showing how quantification and
measurement have taken over many aspects of human-facing jobs, leaving little room for doctors,
teachers,and others to build connection.
"When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame,a risk
that makes it all the more powerful when practitioner's show empathetic(同理心的)reflection,”writes
Pugh.In chapter 8,she explains how such interactions can be done right.Research conducted by
herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective labor:"relational design",or how
people are set up to interact with one another,"connective culture,"or shared practices and beliefs that
influence how people interact, and"resource distribution,"which includes time given for interaction,
worker-to-client rates, and the extent of technology and data use, among other factors.
Pugh concludes by arguing that we need a social movement for connection."We need to fight
for what we might call our social health',"she maintains.
8.What is the main concern of Allison Pugh's new book?
A.The impact of AI on future employment.
B.The approach to living and working with AI.
C.The increasing role of technology in caregiving
D.The value of connective labor in the age of automation.
9.Why does the author mention "practitioners"in paragraph 3?
A.To explain how to do care work.
B.To argue against the automation technology.
C.To prove the significance of human connection.
D.To discuss the challenges of privacy in caregiving.

10.What does the underlined word"it"in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The encounter
B.The shame.C.The risk.
D.The potential.
11.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The overview of chapter 8.
B.The effective way to interact.
C.The new trend of caregiving.
D.The factors of avoiding shame.

Beneath the ocean's surface lies a secret world of light. While bioluminescence-the ability of
living things to produce their own light-has long interested scientists,a lesser-known phenomenon
called bio-fluorescence(生物荧光)is now stealing the spotlight..
Bio-fluorescence occurs when sea animals absorb light at one wavelength and send it out at
another,creating vivid lights in colors like green,red,or orange.Unlike bioluminescence,which
produces light through chemical reactions,bio-fluorescence depends on absorbing light from outside
to glow. This natural light show is not just for beauty,it serves critical survival functions.
In the coral reefs (of the Pacific, researchers observed corals sending out green under
blue light."It's a dance of partnership guided by light,"explains marine biologist Dr.Kenji Nakamura.
Without this interaction, coral bleaching ()-a major threat to coral ecosystems-would speed
p
Another wonder comes from the Hawaiian bobtail squid(短尾乌贼).When threatened by
hunters,it releases a cloud of bio-fluorescent ink.The sudden burst of light confuses attackers, buying
the squid precious seconds to escape.Dr.Emily Carter who led the study notes,"This is evolution's
version of a smoke screen-but far more shining."
The discovery of GFP一green fluorescent protein(绿色荧光蛋白)一in jellyfish in 1962
revolutionized science.Researchers realized GFP could be used to mark specific cells, making
invisible processes visible.Today,it lights up nerve cells in brain studies, helping map out connections
in diseases like Alzheimer's."GFP is a window into the brain's hidden workings,"says brain scientist
Dr.Maria Gonzalez.
Scientists are now copying bio-fluorescence to develop sustainable technologies. For example,
fluorescent proteins inspire energy-efficient LED lighting, and bio-fluorescent markers could improve
medical imaging."Nature's designs are blueprints for human innovation,"says materials scientist Dr.
Raj Patel.
Yet mysteries remain.Over 200 species of bio-fluorescent fish were recently discovered, their
purposes still unclear. As submarines dive deeper, each expedition reveals new players in this beautiful
underwater light show, proving that the ocean's depths still guard ancient secrets.
12.How is bio-fluorescence different from bioluminescence?
A.It is drawing less attention.
B.It produces brighter lights
C.It needs an outside light source.D.It makes better use of chemical reactions.
13.What can we learn about the examples in paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.They both describe light-based hunting methods.
B.They both show survival functions of bio-fluorescence.
C.They both explain the formation of a close partnership.
D.They both highlight potential threats to the environment.

14.What is the main use of GFP in science?
A.To protect corals from bleaching.
B.To create more efficient LED lights.
C.To treat the disease ofAlzheimer's.
D.To visualize cells for better observation
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Bio-fluorescence:Nature's Hidden Light Show
B.Bio-fluorescence:Nature's Display of Beauty
C.Bioluminescence:Ocean's Ancient Magic Power
D.Bioluminescence:Colourful Window into Ocean Secret

In modern busy life, mental overwhelm has become common for many people. We often struggle
with endless worries, messy thoughts and tiring to-do lists that leave us mentally exhausted.16
Thankfully, here are some practical and evidence-based ways to ease our mental pressure and regain
calmness in daily life.
Write about your problems.
Writing down what makes you feel stressed is more helpful than you think.Research has shown
that expressive writing can reduce troubling thoughts and improve your working memory.17
Just let your words flow freely on the paper without self-criticism.Doing this every day can prevent
messy thoughts from piling up and weighing you down.
·18
A recent study has found that people need nearly 23 minutes to fully regain focus after an
unexpected disturbance.Frequent distractions will only leave you feeling anxious and inefficient. To
solve this problem, you can identify common disturbances like social media updates and email notices
Set fixed periods to deal with them so that you can save your cognitive energy for key tasks.
·Connect physically.
Rather than keeping to yourself when feeling stressed, try to stay close to people who care about
you.19 Studies have made it clear that warm physical touch can lower stress levels and
improve your overall sense of well-being.Even small gentle touches can create a strong feeling of
comfort and calmness.
Learn to refuse politely.
Overwhelm often comes from taking on too many unnecessary responsibilities. You can list
things you plan to say"no"to,such as after-work emails or meaningless events.20 Only in
this way can you put them into what really matters and improve your mental health.
A.Schedule interruptions.
B.Manage time reasonably.
C.This daily practice helps clear your mind effectively.

their devices.Iknow I can't change what the world has become. But as a college teacher,I can shape my
classroom.
When it comes to cellphones,I've learned that one cannot be tough on students using them in class.
I once had a colleague who tried this, threatening punishment for violators. The rest ofher semester was,
in a word,.nhappy.But neither do I think it productive to take a hands--off(放手不管的)attitude toward
students who are texting friends while the poor teacher labors, ignored,at the blackboard.I knew a math
professor who tried this approach. One day,I asked some of his students who their math teacher was.
Their response:"Some guy."
Both examples suggested that there must be a middle way.So I came up with one.On the first day
of class,I struck a friendly but purposeful tone, telling my students,"If I catch you looking at your phone
during the class discussion, you must call your parents right then and there on speakerphone (and
tell them that you love them."I delivered this with a twinkle in my eye,and my students chuckled
good-naturedly.Then I followed up with my end of the bargain:"This means whenever you speak to me,
I promise to give you my full attention."
When delivered in a caring but serious way,my students are on board.Well,mostly.There's always
an exception.
His name was Paul Davis. He liked to test the waters of classroom norms ()like coming to
class in his pajama bottoms and slippers. One day, during a lively class discussion,I caught Paul typing
on his phone.
"Excuse me,.I interrupted.“Are you texting?”
