The risk of children and young people (CYP) being exposed to and experiencing fraud (诈骗) is considerably growing compared to elderly people as the internet increasingly becomes part of their daily lives. Here’s a report revealing fraud against CYP in 2025 in England and Wales.
Scale of fraud
70% of CYP aged 13-21 were targeted by fraud in the last year. Nearly a third of CYP have been a victim of fraud. Only 1% of CYP have never encountered fraud. Some CYP are more likely to experience fraud victimization, including older CYP (aged 18-21) and CYP with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Methods used by fraudsters
✲ A message from a stranger asking for your personal details: 30%
✲A spam email or other online message with a suspicious link: 24%
✲ Pop-up window asking you to click on a suspicious link: 24%
✲Someone pretending to be your friend or family member: 20%
✲ A message from a stranger asking for your bank account details or for money: 18%
Action plan
The findings of this report have been used to inform an action plan which sets out how key authorities can help prevent fraud experienced by CYP, minimize its impact and improve their understanding of what fraud is and how it may present.
Actions
Actors
The Home Office/ Department for Education (DfE) should produce a separate strategy meant for CYP.
Government, Home Office, DfE
Existing networks such as the Joint Fraud Taskforce should include child protection experts and a DfE representative.
DfE, child protection experts
Private sector actors are encouraged to tackle fraud against CYP, for example the Online Safety Act should be updated to require social media companies to protect children from fraudulent content.
Social media companies, banks
1. What can we learn about CYP fraud from the scale data?
A. Disabled CYP are free from fraud attacks.
B. Most CYP have never met fraud-related tricks.
C. Almost all CYP have come across fraudsters.
D. Young teens face higher fraud risk than 18-21-year-olds.
2. What do the fraud methods have in common?
A. They involve identity theft. B. They are conducted remotely.
C. They are carried out by friends. D. They lead to investment losses.
3. What are private sectors expected to do to protect CYP?
A. Add experts into existing working groups. B. Draw up independent national safety rules.

Woodpeckers (啄木鸟) hopped into my life in an unexpected place. As a young boy of eight or nine, I peered impatiently through the kitchen window into the backyard, waiting for the rain to stop so I might escape my tame suburban home to a wilder place where I could watch more than American Robins (知更鸟).
Suddenly, a bird caught my attention. As it bounced closer, the bright red mustache, and veins of orange on the tail and wings revealed it was a male woodpecker! With what seemed like an explosion of red feathers, he was gone. From that moment on, I read everything I could about woodpeckers. Instantly I became a woodpecker enthusiast.
Since that day, the call of the woodpecker has led me on many journeys from my backyard to distant continents and inspired me to rise before the sun so that their syncopated (切分节奏的) drumming might allow me to find them, follow them, and learn about their mysterious lives before they disappear back into the trees. My fascination has only grown over the years as I noticed that no matter where I was in North America, as long as there were large trees and surrounding natural landscape, there was at least one species of woodpecker to trigger my wonder at the richness around me and the woodpecker’s role in enhancing it.
My book Woodpecker contains an exploration of the lives of the forty-one species of woodpeckers in North America. In telling the stories of these woodpeckers, I focus my lens, narrative, and anecdotes on the species and behaviors that are most representative, while also highlighting interesting exceptions and contrasts. I hope that by sharing intimate images and stories from the more secreted moments of their life histories, I can motivate people to better appreciate their critical role in enhancing our natural world and perhaps inspire the long-term protection of these birds and the habitats that they rely upon.
4. What do we know about the author from paragraph 1?
A. He was bored of bird-watching. B. He hated leaving his suburban home.
C. He longed to see more varied wildlife. D. He loved American Robins very much.
5. The author’s fascination with woodpeckers began with ______.
A. his determination to make a change B. a single, unexpected childhood sighting
C. some research on their beautiful feathers D. books that introduced him to woodpeckers
6. Why has the author’s love for woodpeckers grown?
A. They lead him to many different places.
B. Their distinctive sounds have amazed him.
C. They enable him to uncover the world’s mysteries.
D. Their widespread presence helps him see nature’s richness.
7. What is the key strength of the author’s book?
A. It centers on rare woodpecker species.
B. It covers all woodpecker species in detail.
C. It reveals the threats to woodpeckers’ survival.
D. It features typical species and interesting exceptions.
C 5. B 6. D 7. D

Scroll through #SingingDog posts on social media, and you will find many clips of dogs howling (嗥叫) along to their favourite tunes. But can these doggy “singers” show any real musicality? That’s the question that psychologist Aniruddh Patel and his colleagues at Tufts University have attempted to answer with an ear-catching new study, which shows some dogs really are perceiving pitch (音高) and adjusting their “singing” accordingly.
The idea for the study came from descriptions of wolves’ howling in a pack. Observations from the wild suggest that each wolf attempts to hit a different tone. The result is a rough mixture of sounds that might create the impression of a much larger group, which would help frighten away potential enemies. “And so it had been theorised that they were actually paying attention and changing their pitch,” says Patel.
This is very hard to test experimentally, of course, which is why Patel and his colleagues turned to house pets. They asked a handful of dog owners to record their dogs howling to their personally preferred track-first in the original key and then in versions that had been changed three semitones above and three semitones below-to see how they would respond to the change in pitch. The team focused their analyses on two ancient breeds (品种), Samoyeds and Shiba Inus, that are thought to be more closely related to their wolf ancestors.
All four of the Samoyeds studied showed some sensitivity to the track’s pitch, consistently adapting their howls to the new key, though not perfectly. “They’re trying to match their own voice to what they hear; they’re not just making some instinctive and inflexible response,” says Patel. The two Shiba Inus, in contrast, appeared to be tone-deaf. He believes genetic variation may explain the gap.
The findings might shed light on the origins of human music. Some theorists have argued singing evolved from speech-related sound control, but the fact that dogs can also control pitch without any other forms of vocal learning suggests that language may not have been necessary at the beginning.
8. What first inspired Patel to study dogs’ musical ability?
A. Theories of sound control. B. Dogs’ singing videos on social media.
C. Observations of wild hunting. D. Wolves’ tone awareness in pack howling.
9. What aspect of the study does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Its design. B. Its purpose. C. Its subject. D. Its significance.
10. What does the study find according to paragraph 4?
A. Genes decide dogs’ pitch. B. Dogs’ responses to pitches differ.
C. Dogs are music-insensitive. D. Musicality is shared across species.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Are Dogs Born Singers? B. Can Dogs Learn to Sing?
C. What Tunes Do Dogs Prefer? D. Which Dogs Like Music Most?
D 9. A 10. B 11. A
根据第二段“The idea for the study came from descriptions of wolves’ howling in a pack. Observations from the wild suggest that each wolf attempts to hit a different tone.(这项研究的灵感来源于对狼群嚎叫的描述。野外观察表明,每只狼都会尝试发出不同的音调)”可知,狼群在嚎叫时对声音的感知最初促使帕特尔研究狗的音乐能力。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“This is very hard to test experimentally, of course, which is why Patel and his colleagues turned to house pets. They asked a handful of dog owners to record their dogs howling to their personally preferred track-first in the original key and then in versions that had been changed three semitones above and three semitones below-to see how they would respond to the change in pitch. The team focused their analyses on two ancient breeds (品种), Samoyeds and Shiba Inus, that are thought to be more closely related to their wolf ancestors.(当然,这在实验上非常难以测试,因此帕特尔和他的同事们转而研究家养宠物。他们邀请了几位狗主人记录他们的狗在听到自己最喜爱的原始音调以及上下各三个半音的版本时发出的吠叫,以观察它们对音高变化的反应。研究团队将分析重点放在了两个被认为与狼祖先关系更近的古老犬种——萨摩耶和柴犬上)”可知,第三段主要讨论了研究的设计。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“All four of the Samoyeds studied showed some sensitivity to the track’s pitch, consistently adapting their howls to the new key, though not perfectly. “They’re trying to match their own voice to what they hear; they’re not just making some instinctive and inflexible response,” says Patel. The two Shiba Inus, in contrast, appeared to be tone-deaf.
根据最后一段“The findings might shed light on the origins of human music. Some theorists have argued singing evolved from speech-related sound control, but the fact that dogs can also control pitch without any other forms of vocal learning suggests that language may not have been necessary at the beginning.(这些发现或许有助于揭示人类音乐的起源。一些理论家认为,歌唱是从与语言相关的发声控制中演化而来的,但狗也能在没有任何其他形式的发声学习的情况下控制音高,这表明语言在最初可能并非必要)”结合文章主要说明了科学家受狼群嚎叫启发,实验发现萨摩耶能感知音高并调整嚎叫,柴犬却不行。该发现为探究人类音乐起源提供新思路,证明乐感未必依托语言产生。可知,A选项“狗是天生的歌手吗?”最符合文章标题。
D
In an era dominated by short-form content and instant gratification (即时满足), poetry is often regarded as an outdated literary form. Critics argue that its complex images, unusual rhyme patterns, and symbolic language make it difficult for modern readers to appreciate. Yet poetry’s value has not faded; rather, it has grown increasingly essential.
Poetry allows individuals to express complex emotions and experiences in a way that standard language is unable to. Life is complex and often rejects a simple interpretation of its hardships, so it makes sense that poetry does the same. Poet Dylan Thomas wrote, “A poem may make us laugh, cry, think deeply, or remain silent.” In an age marked by emotional pressure and uncertainty, poetry offers both writers and readers a healing release, helping them find connection in shared human experiences, whether those are about love, loss or joy.
Moreover, poetry plays a vital role in helping young people reflect and think deeply about social, political and cultural issues in this modern age. The rise of social media has conditioned the brain to seek quick fixes, weakening the ability for deep thinking and reflection. Reading a complicated poem — with its packed verses and layered meanings — can force readers to slow down and explore language rather than mindlessly snack on information, which might lead to an improvement in analytical and critical thinking skills.
Poetry, as an art form, also encourages creativity. Individuals can break free from traditional forms of expression and experiment with language, rhythm, structure and sound. Besides, poetry invites writers to dive deeply into emotions and ideas, allowing new insights and perspectives to be uncovered. Hence, poetry gains its significance in a society that highly values creativity.
Admittedly, poetry may never recover the popularity it once held during the Victorian era. It would be unrealistic to expect everyone to enjoy The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot. Yet readers can learn to appreciate poems that both challenge and entertain. Poetry still matters — not despite its difficulty, but because of it.
12. What is critics’ view on poetry in modern times?
A. It lacks deep meanings.
B. It fails to relate to modern life.
C. It discourages average readers.
D. It falls short of symbolic images.
13. What is the value of poetry according to paragraph 2?
A. Providing instant pleasure. B. Creating new literary trends.
C. Offering emotional connection. D. Encouraging social interaction.
14. What do the underlined words “snack on” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Dig into. B. Glance through. C. Reflect on. D. Sort out.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Difficulty sustains poetry’s appeal. B. Poetry will regain its popularity.
C. Readers dislike challenging poems. D. Everyone is expected to read poetry.
C 13. C 14. B 15. A
根据第一段的句子“Critics argue that its complex images, unusual rhyme patterns, and symbolic language make it difficult for modern readers to appreciate. (批评家认为,其复杂的意象、不寻常的韵律模式和象征性语言使现代读者难以欣赏。)”可知,批评家认为诗歌让普通读者望而却步。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“In an age marked by emotional pressure and uncertainty, poetry offers both writers and readers a healing release, helping them find connection in shared human experiences, whether those are about love, loss or joy. (在一个充满情感压力和不确定性的时代,诗歌为作者和读者提供了治愈的释放,帮助他们在共同的人类经历中找到联结,无论是关于爱、失去还是喜悦。)”可知,诗歌的价值在于提供情感联结。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段的语境“Reading a complicated poem — with its packed verses and layered meanings — can force readers to slow down and explore language rather than mindlessly snack on information (阅读一首复杂的诗——诗节紧凑,含义层次分明——可以迫使读者放慢速度、探索语言,而不是无意识地snack on信息)”,rather than表示对比,前文是“slow down and explore (放慢探索)”,后文应是与之相反的快速浏览。
根据最后一段的句子“Poetry still matters — not despite its difficulty, but because of it. (诗歌依旧意义非凡——并非因为它晦涩难懂,恰恰是因为这份晦涩(才更显珍贵)。)”可知,难度恰恰维持了诗歌的吸引力。
第二节 (共5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Touching movies, stressful events at home or work, and even good news like a wedding or a baby might bring on the waterworks. ____16____ But you might not know that crying can have a big effect on your body and mind — here’s how.
● Crying relieves stress.
Humans are the only species to weep from emotions, but scientists still don’t know exactly how the physical act of crying is connected to our feelings. ____17____ Maybe it helps relieve the physical tension of feeling upset. In other words, crying occurs as our body returns from an aroused “fight or flight” state to a calm “rest and digest” state.
● ____18____
You might think that crying would make you feel better if it means your stress is relieved — it does, sometimes. “In surveys about two-thirds of people generally report feeling better after crying,” says Jonathan Rottenberg, a professor at the University of South Florida. In many cases, however, the better mood after having cried is the consequence of receiving emotional support and comfort.
● Crying strengthens bonds.
When we communicate with others through tears, we are revealing our own vulnerability (脆弱). “With supportive people, it can create an increased feeling of bonding and connection,” Dr. Orloff says. “You trust the person enough to cry around them.” ____19____ And this can promote an empathetic response and an emotional connection.
● Crying helps us get what we want.
Tears can be a way to cause a specific reaction that works in our favor. ____20____ Even if we don’t mean to control others, our crying may have the result of easing anger and making others feel guilty or more willing to bend to our will.
A. Crying boosts mood.
B. Crying lets you release emotions in private.
C. Sometimes, you just need to let the tears flow.
D. Why do we cry when we’re sad (and sometimes happy)?
E. Crying is, therefore, a signal that we feel close to someone.
F. So, it may take a while before crying makes you feel better.
G. Anyone who’s ever cried after getting pulled over for speeding knows that.
C 17. D 18. A 19. E 20. G
根据上文“Touching movies, stressful events at home or work, and even good news like a wedding or a baby might bring on the waterworks.(感人的电影、家庭或工作中的压力事件,甚至像婚礼或新生儿这样的好消息,都可能引发情绪波动)”以及后文“But you might not know that crying can have a big effect on your body and mind — here’s how.(但你可能不知道,哭泣会对你的身体和心理产生重大影响——具体是这样)”可知,第一段开头提到多种场景都会引发哭泣,空后转折指出人们大多不了解哭泣对身心的好处,C项“有时候你就是需要让眼泪流出来”符合上下文衔接。
根据上文“Humans are the only species to weep from emotions, but scientists still don’t know exactly how the physical act of crying is connected to our feelings.(人类是唯一会因情绪而流泪的物种,但科学家至今仍不清楚哭泣这一物理行为与我们的情感之间究竟存在怎样的联系)”以及后文“Maybe it helps relieve the physical tension of feeling upset. In other words, crying occurs as our body returns from an aroused “fight or flight” state to a calm “rest and digest” state.(也许这有助于缓解因情绪低落而产生的身体紧张。换句话说,哭泣是身体从被唤醒的“战斗或逃跑”状态恢复到平静的“休息与消化”状态时的一种表现)”可知,第二段提到科学家尚不清楚哭泣和情绪的具体关联,空后给出“哭泣帮助缓解情绪紧张”的可能解释,D项“为什么我们悲伤时、有时开心也会哭?”引出问题衔接后文解释。
【18题详解】
根据后文“You might think that crying would make you feel better if it means your stress is relieved — it does, sometimes. “In surveys about two-thirds of people generally report feeling better after crying,” says Jonathan Rottenberg, a professor at the University of South Florida. In many cases, however, the better mood after having cried is the consequence of receiving emotional support and comfort.(你可能会认为,如果哭泣意味着压力得到了缓解,那么哭泣会让你感觉更好——有时确实如此。南佛罗里达大学教授乔纳森·罗滕伯格表示:“在调查中,三分之二的人普遍报告称,哭泣后心情变好了”然而,在许多情况下,哭泣后情绪好转其实是由于获得了情感支持和安慰的结果)”可知,第三段整段内容围绕“哭泣后大多人会感觉更好、改善心情”展开,A项“哭泣提升情绪”符合段落小标题要求。
【19题详解】
根据上文“When we communicate with others through tears, we are revealing our own vulnerability (脆弱). “With supportive people, it can create an increased feeling of bonding and connection,” Dr. Orloff says. “You trust the person enough to cry around them.”(当我们通过泪水与他人交流时,实际上是在展现自身的脆弱。

My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep house plants. Anything in pots gets either over watered or underwatered. But after I was diagnosed (诊断) with a brain cancer, with an expectation of no more than a year to live, I loved the idea of having something new and green around.
My friend Mitch gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green pottery bowl with three pencil-sizes talks (茎) bound together. We placed the plant in the living room window across from the couch where 1 spent much of the day. I smiled when I looked at it over the coffee Hanna b brought me each morning.
It old Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or brown or lose all its leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless. Brain cancer limited my ability to walk, and the treatment left me exhausted, making it hard for me to accomplish everyday tasks.
As a family physician, I was used to being the one who provided care, not the one who received it. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed that I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity and taught me I could still be a caregiver.
Plants and people could still depend on me. Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed radiation. Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny and thick. Both the tree and I were thriving. But hen, somehow, it began to show signs of stress. No matter what I did, the leaves kept browning and hanging down to the floor.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“If my lucky bamboo dies, I might die too!” I yelled,

As my anxiety reduced, I began to search online to help my failing plant.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“If my lucky bamboo dies, I might die too!” I yelled. Living with the green and growing plant had offered me comfort. Now that the tree was struggling, I felt increasingly fearful. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy. Hearing my words, Hannah softly reminded me of the wrong connection between the plant with my own survival. With the help of her patience, I realized I had wrongly connected my care of the plant—something over which I had at least some control—with my own survival—something over which I had no control.
As my anxiety reduced, I began to search online to help my failing plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, loosing its roots to give it room to grow. When it was put in the sunny window, we both began to boom again. Whenever I look at the tree with its stalks in its new pot, I think of Mitch and the other people who have cared for and supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will comfort Hannah and remind her that our large community will continue to support her after I am gone.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“If my lucky bamboo dies, I might die too!” I yelled,
