1.【答案】A
【原文】M: We’d better hurry, Jasmine. It’s 4:30 p.m. now.
W: Come on. Our train leaves at 7:30 p.m. It usually takes us an hour to get to the train station.
M: What a relief! I thought it would leave at 6:30 p.m. Well, in that case, we can set off in an hour.
W: OK.
2.【答案】C
【原文】W: What are you up to tonight, Andrew?
M: Nothing really. I was going to play tennis with Jerry, but he told me he had to attend a meeting. What’s up?
W: Would you like to go to the movies tonight?
M: Sure.
3.【答案】B
【原文】M:I’m really nervous. Aren’t you curious about the result of the match?
W: Well, it’s okay if I don’t get a place. I’ve done my best, anyhow.
M: I’m the opposite of you. I’m on pins and needles.
4.【答案】A
【原文】W:I have to say the TV show is really dull. Shall we go for a walk in the park?
M: Hold on a minute. Let me finish doing these dishes first.
W: Sure, no rush. We can take our coats and enjoy the peace once you’re done.
5.【答案】C
【原文】W: Is the little girl in the short video speaking Cantonese?
M: Yeah, she’s reciting the Cantonese version of an ancient poem.
W: She’s so cute! Share the video with me.
M: OK. It’s got 10,000 likes on TikTok. I’ve watched it five times on end.

【原文】M: Judy, the blouse looks wonderful on you! The color goes with your trousers perfectly.
W: Thanks, Mark.
M: Well, the blouse certainly shows your good taste. It must have cost a lot.
W: Actually, no. I got it on sale at Star Mall. It was originally $150, but I got it for only $60.
M: That’s a fantastic deal! How did you manage to find such a great deal?
W: Oh, I always pay attention to their newsletters. They announce promotions ahead of time.
M: Wise move! I should start doing that, too.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A
【原文】W: Bob, I heard you’ve been travelling a lot. What’s the longest flight you’ve been on?
M: My longest flight was from Istanbul to Bangkok. I had a stopover in Delhi. It took me about 16hours in total. It was challenging to sit for so long, but I made it enjoyable with movies, healthy food, and some sleep.
W: Sounds exhausting! Do you have any tips for long flights?
M: Definitely! First, choose your airline carefully. For flights over 4 hours, make sure they offer comfortable seats, good meals and in-flight entertainment, like a TV screen. Also, ask for a blanket right after boarding to stay cozy.
W: Good advice! Anything else?
M: I think that taking two short flights; like two-5-hour ones, is better than one 10-hour flight. Breaking up the journey makes it easier to stretch and relax in between.
W: Thanks. I’ll keep them in mind for my next trip.

【原文】W: Welcome to the cooking demonstration. Tonight, I’m going to introduce the art of Thai fruit carving. When it comes to Thai fruits, they’re quite often transformed into a piece of art. I really hope tonight’s talk will open the door to a new culture for you. Thailand is known for its rich culture and traditions, and one of the most fascinating aspects of Thai culture is the art of fruit carving. This ancient art form dates back to the 14th century, and it has been passed down from generation to generation. Fruit carving is practiced in both Thailand and Japan, but the earliest known fruit carving was found in China. Fruits were carved both for decorative purposes and for the food to look more appealing before it was eaten. Thai fruit carving is not only a beautiful art form, but it is also a way to celebrate the beauty and abundance of nature. Now, if you just pick up the cucumber in front of you and one of the medium-sized knives, I’ll show you how to turn that boring cucumber into a beautiful leaf.

In 2023, the fossil (化石) of a prehistoric bird was discovered in China, The bird, called Baminornis, lived 150 million years ago. It may be the oldest bird ever discovered and changes the timeline of bird evolution, a study has found.
Baminornis is the second bird known to have lived during the Jurassic period (侏罗纪时代). The first, called Archaeopteryx, was discovered in 1862 in Germany. Archaeopteryx had many dinosaur-like features, which helped scientists determine that birds had evolved from dinosaurs. For more than 150 years after Archaeopteryx was found, however, no other birds from that period were discovered. That left scientists with a gap in knowledge about bird evolution. They thought there were other flying birds during that period, but they had no fossil to prove it. The discovery of Baminornis changed that and also helped scientists understand the process of bird evolution better.
Though Archaeopteryx and Baminornis are from the same period, they have key differences. Archaeopteryx was about the size of a modern crow (乌鸦) and could only fly for a short time. Baminornis was smaller. Like modern birds, it had a short tail that helped it fly smoothly. The development of short tails was essential in helping birds evolve into better flyers. The tail on Baminornis indicated that it was more advanced in its evolution compared to Archaeopteryx.
“When dinosaurs evolved into birds, the biggest change is the shrinkage of the tail.” said Min Wang, who led the research.
Before Baminornis was discovered, scientists had only found birds with short tails that lived about 20 million years later. But Baminornis suggested that bird evolution started millions of years earlier than researchers previously realized.
24. Why is the discovery of Baminornis significant?
A. It helped scientists determine the origin of birds.
B. It filled the gap in knowledge about bird evolution.
C. It contributed to the discovery of Archaeopteryx.
D. It helped scientists discover other birds from the Jurassic period.
25. How did Baminornis differ from Archaeopteryx?
A. Baminornis was larger in size.
B. Baminornis could fly better.
C. Baminornis looked more like dinosaurs.
D. Baminornis lived in the Jurassic period.
26. What does the underlined word “shrinkage” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Reduction. B. Expansion. C. Disappearance. D. Growth.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Baminornis: an outstanding flyer
B. Scientists map the bird evolution
C. Archaeopteryx: the origin of birds
D. Baminornis fossil rewrites bird history
C
It’s assumed that the best way to lift your spirits when you’re feeling down is to do something nice for yourself. However, research suggests that altruistic acts (利他行为) work better. In one study, participants were set tasks that benefited either themselves, other individuals or the whole of humanity. Those who acted in the interest of others experienced an increase in positive emotions and psychological well-being, while those who were tasked with treating themselves kindly did not.
I did not know this when I signed up with the conservation group four years ago. Nor did I know that volunteering is associated with greater self-esteem (自尊) and better self-reported health and life satisfaction, or that helping others activates the brain’s “reward” system. What I did know was that I was feeling very worried about the ecological and climate crises. I was surrounded by hopelessness and helplessness.
A counselor (辅导员) changed me on to volunteering. As I cried about turtle doves, which were most likely to be the next extinction in the UK, he said, “Do something.” He gave me three rules: make it simple, immediate and cooperative.
That’s how, a week later, I found myself in Victoria Park in Ashford, Kent, fishing old carrier bags out the river. Our band of volunteers put up bat-boxes, created new paths, and surveyed for amphibians (两栖动物).
Psychologists call the mental improvement from volunteering the “helper’s high”. And I did get high. I’d soon signed up to volunteer at a wildlife reserve, where we managed habitat for butterflies, built leaky dams and so on.
I’ve not stopped since. Every time I volunteer, I come home strengthened by the fresh air, the natural environment and the company and, perhaps most of all, by having acted in line with what I value.
28. Which may make one more cheerful according to the study?
A. Obtaining a higher social status.
B. Saving money for the future life.
C. Treating oneself to a big meal.
D. Participating in voluntary services.
29. What could be learned about the author from paragraph 2?
A. He got much self-esteem.
B. He achieved great satisfaction.
C. He worried about ecological crises.
D. He was desperate about his future.
30. What does the underlined phrase “helper’s high” probably refer to?
A. The helper’s pressure.
B. The pleasure of giving help.
C. The volunteers’ spirits.
D. The joy of pleasing oneself.
31. What message does the text mainly intend to convey?
A. Psychological well-being is very important.
B. Volunteering makes a difference to our society.
C. Helping others brings emotional improvement.
D. Environmental conservation makes a good world.
D
Scientists have discovered that climate change is killing the scent (香味) of flowers and their scent may be lost forever. Climate change is also the reason Kuala Lumpur City Hall is turning to trees, because flowers have been dying fast. It was getting too costly to beautify the city. City Hall would continue to plant trees more suited for breathing in the increasing pollution and dealing with global warming. Dr. Abdul Latif Mohamad, a professor at University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), said genetically modified (转基因) flowers might be the way out.
Latif said UKM might have offered reasons as to why some insects were not spreading flower seeds, which was caused by the missing “scent track” due to global warming. “The scent producing chemical mixture in flowers dry up faster now compared with before.” The only way out, he said, was to genetically modify the flowers so that the effects would not be everlasting and the future generation would enjoy nature’s beauty. “The act is almost like producing oils from flowers. Scientists add on certain chemicals for stronger scent.” He said scents in flowers last longer in colder climates as plants can hold on to their oils longer.
“But locally, we fear the scent might be lost forever,” said Latif. With flowers sending forth less scent, the insects and butterflies are travelling further and longer to get nectar (花蜜). Birds and insects were heading towards hilly areas and deeper into the places where the weather is cooler. Upon research, Latif’s team also discovered that the flowers were no longer pollinated (授粉) after dust blocked the growth of stigmas (柱头).
Latif said Malaysians could no longer depend on nature to get better by itself without the help of science, and needed to follow in the footsteps of Europe and the United States, which have poured millions in the research of genetically modified seeds.
32. What happens to the flowers?
A. Their prices get higher.
B. They are not as sweet as before.
C. They replace trees to beautify the city.
D. They can’t survive the heavy pollution.
33. What do the underlined words “The act” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. To spread flower seeds. B. To find scent track.
C. To genetically modify the flowers. D. To enjoy nature’s beauty.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Challenges lie ahead for local flowers.
B. Scientists’ research brings hope to flowers.
C. Insects change their habits in cold weather.
D. The heavy dust is a problem to flowers.
35. What does Latif suggest people do?
A. Follow the laws of nature.
B. Make the most of science.
C. Raise money for research.
D. Protect local environment.
