W: Good morning, everyone. Welcome to our special feature on a meaningful event hosted by the charity organization Save Our Street Dogs, or SOSD. On March 2nd, SOSD will hold its annual fundraising and adoption event in Urban Park. This combined event aims to raise funds for a new care center while also helping more street dogs find loving homes. The funds raised are crucial for the construction of the SOSD Care Center, a major step to accommodate more dogs in need. At present, SOSD cares for 160 dogs at its shelters and also feeds 70 homeless dogs wandering around on Jurong Island. During the event, visitors can meet several dogs seeking forever homes. These include Odin, recently rescued from an abandoned factory and now recovering from an eye injury; Caleb, a loving dog who was left behind after his owner moved away; and Tami, a fun companion rescued from a forest, who had surgery after suffering a severe leg injury. These three are just a few of the furry friends waiting for adopters. On-the-spot volunteer registration will also be available on March 2nd. This is a great chance to support a worthy cause, so why not take part in the event on March 2nd and help a dog find its forever home?

Xu Congxiang, 69, a major grain grower in Taihe County, East China’s Anhui Province, reached a record harvest this year, with the wheat yield on his demonstration farm over 800 kilograms (kg) per mu. “In the 1970s, most of China’s wheat yield per mu was under 300 kg. Now, as farming technology continues to improve, our grain output has increased greatly,” recalls Xu.
A few decades ago, when Xu was under 20 and had just graduated from high school, he returned to his hometown and became a farmer, taking up his journey of exploring new ways to increase grain yield through science and technology. Back then, a magnifying glass (放大镜) was Xu’s best helper for field observation. Taking a magnifying glass and a notebook, Xu used to set off into the fields at dawn and stay there until the moon rose.
“At that time, there was no advanced equipment, such as an insect monitor. We could only use a magnifying glass to observe very small changes in the crops. Some tiny spots on the leaves could be the signal of the output reduction,” says Xu. During those years, Xu wrote many notebooks, which contained detailed information including the time and degree of wind and the growth status of crops. With his rich experience, Xu summed up the methods in the green and efficient cultivation (栽培) of wheat and promoted them to the surrounding farmers.
Under his influence, Xu’s children followed in his footsteps to work in agriculture and achieved further breakthroughs. His family focuses on developing high-quality varieties and exploring high-yield cultivation techniques. Since the beginning of this year, a total of fifty new grain varieties have been planted in the experimental field, and seven experiments have been conducted. In Xu’s opinion, modern agricultural science and technology should be applied to help modern farmers increase yield, and he is resolved to make continuous efforts in this field.
24. What can be shown from Xu’s words in paragraph 1?
A. The origin of a demonstration farm. B. The advance of agriculture in China.
C. The satisfaction of working as a farmer. D. His pleasant memories of the old days.
25. Why was Xu concerned about the small marks on crop leaves?
A. They could make the crops look different.
B. They might help the crops grow more quickly.
C. They could show that the weather was changing.
D. They could indicate a possible decline in crop yield.
26. What is the purpose of writing Xu’s children in the last paragraph?
A. To explain why large-scale grain experiments are carried out locally.
B. To compare the different farming techniques between two generations.
C. To show Xu’s spirit and cause of scientific farming can be passed down.
D. To prove they are more talented in agriculture than Xu himself.
27. Which of the following can best describe Xu Congxiang?
A. Ambitious and devoted. B. Empathetic and pioneering.
C. Sociable and independent. D. Industrious and determined.
B 25. D 26. C 27. D
根据第一段“In the 1970s, most of China’s wheat yield per mu was under 300 kg. Now, as farming technology continues to improve, our grain output has increased greatly,” recalls Xu.
根据第三段“Some tiny spots on the leaves could be the signal of the output reduction,” says Xu.
Under his influence, Xu’s children followed in his footsteps to work in agriculture and achieved further breakthroughs.
Taking a magnifying glass and a notebook, Xu used to set off into the fields at dawn and stay there until the moon rose. In Xu’s opinion, modern agricultural science and technology should be applied to help modern farmers increase yield, and he is resolved to make continuous efforts in this field.
C
Cognitive (认知的) offloading, the act of delegating mental work to external tools, should concern anyone who values their own intelligence. When given the choice between thinking through a problem or letting technology handle it, will we choose the tool, even when we’re perfectly capable of succeeding on our own?
Sam Gilbert noticed in his experiments something he calls “reminder bias.” This is the tendency to use external memory aids even when your own memory would serve you better. Participants chose to set digital reminders for tasks they could easily remember unaided. Even when offered money to encourage people to rely on their own memory, they still couldn’t overcome it.
The root reason seems to be that people underestimate their own cognitive abilities. They think they’ll forget, so they set a reminder. They think they can’t solve the problem, so they ask AI. Over time, by consistently choosing the external tool, they never exercise the internal capability.
If the problem were limited to memory, it might not matter much. After all, what’s the problem with setting a reminder on your phone? But research suggests the cognitive costs extend far beyond remembering appointments.
Nathaniel Barr claimed that individuals who score lower on the Cognitive Reflection Test show greater smartphone dependence when obtaining information. These are people who, when faced with a problem, instinctively (本能地) reach for the quickest solution.
AI hasn’t created this tendency. Humans have often preferred mental shortcuts. But AI has removed nearly all difficulties. You don’t have to go to a library or even type a search question. You just ask, and the answer appears, exactly as you need it.
My concern is that people may begin using AI in ways that prevent the development of analytical skills. For a college student who consistently uses AI to work through problems, I question whether they’re building the neural infrastructure (神经基础结构) to handle similar problems independently later in life.
28. What does the underlined word “delegating” most probably mean?
A. Assigning. B. Comparing. C. Applying. D. Linking.
29. Why did participants in Gilbert’s experiment set unnecessary digital reminders?
A. They lacked confidence in their own memory. B. They were not offered enough money.
C. They were poor in cognitive abilities. D. They never exercised their internal capability.
30. The author mentions the Cognitive Reflection Test to show ______.
A. people rely too much on smartphones
B. AI works better than human memory
C. reminder bias causes harm to more than just memory
D. smartphones are the quickest solution to many problems
31. What is the best title of the article?
A. Cognitive Offloading: The Cause of AI Reliance
B. How External Aids Like AI Enhance Reminder Bias
C. External Tools or Internal Tool,Which Causes More Harm
D. Over-reliance on External AI Tools May Weaken Cognitive Abilities
A 29. A 30. C 31. D
When given the choice between thinking through a problem or letting technology handle it 故选A。
The root reason seems to be that people underestimate their own cognitive abilities. They think they’ll forget, so they set a reminder. They think they can’t solve the problem, so they ask AI. 故选A。
But research suggests the cognitive costs extend far beyond remembering appointments. Nathaniel Barr claimed that individuals who score lower on the Cognitive Reflection Test show greater smartphone dependence when obtaining information.
My concern is that people may begin using AI in ways that prevent the development of analytical skills. For a college student who consistently uses AI to work through problems, I question whether they’re building the neural infrastructure (神经基础结构) to handle similar problems independently later in life.
D
Why does “bouba” sound round and “kiki” sound spiky (尖锐的)? This perception, known as “bouba-kiki” effect, is reliable all over the world, and for at least a century, scientists have considered it a clue to the origin of language, theorizing that maybe our ancestors built their first words upon these associations between sound and shape. But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.
The study was led by Maria Loconsole, a comparative psychologist at the University of Padua. She and her colleagues placed chicks in front of two panels: one featured a flowerlike shape with gently rounded curves; the other had a spiky shape like a cartoon explosion. They then played recordings of humans saying either “bouba” or “kiki” and observed the birds’ behavior. When the chicks heard “bouba,” 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard “kiki,” the opposite occurred.
One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves. When round objects hit the ground or roll, they typically produce more continuous, low-frequency sounds than spiky ones. A built-in grasp of those dynamics, linking sight and sound, could help newborn animals quickly make sense of their environment, possibly to locate food or avoid predators
The “bouba-kiki” effect may have played a role in the emergence of language. But for chickens, this same tendency seems to serve a more evolutionary purpose. “Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”
32. What does the new study focus on?
A. The origin of human language. B. Sound-shape connections in chicks.
C. Animals’ recognition of shapes. D. Brain-behavior relationships of birds.
33. In what way do the chicks respond differently to the two sounds?
A. Sound localization. B. Reaction speed.
C. Exploration preference. D. Matching accuracy.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning the effect?
A. Its historical context. B. Its potential application.
C. Its overlooked limitation. D. Its possible explanation.
35. What does Loconsole say about the effect?
A. It originated in birds. B. It shows evolutionary tendency.
C. It’s shared across species. D. It’s vital to language emergence.
B 33. C 34. D 35. C
But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.
When the chicks heard ‘bouba,’ 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard ‘kiki,’ the opposite occurred.
One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves.
根据最后一段“Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”(洛康索莱说:“即使语言是人类独有的,这也并不意味着它源自一种人类独有的能力。”)
The Prison of Mask
People in the public eye are often heavily judged, and the comments can be cruel. We may not have people commenting on our daily choices in People magazine, but we absolutely have the “invisible audiences” that heavily influence our decisions. 36 It imprisons our true selves, forcing us to trade honesty for approval.
Researchers have proven that we often think too much of how much people actually notice us. 37 Because of this, we constantly edit our lives for an audience that isn’t even watching even though we aren’t famous superstars.
But who would you be if no one was watching? Carl Jung, one of the founding fathers of modern psychology, spoke about the “persona”, which is the metaphorical (比喻的) mask we all wear to meet the world. We all have them: the masks of the “successful businessman” or the “nice mom.” 38 However, if we wear these masks for too long, the true face underneath begins to disappear.
There is a severe cost to living a false life. It is called the “regret argument”. Bonnie Ware, a care nurse, recorded the top regrets of the dying. “I wish I had had the courage to live a life true to myself, not a life others expected of me.” When our lives come to an end, the fear of judgment disappears. 39 As the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “Care about what other people think, and you will always be their prisoner.” 40 Take off the mask. The only person who truly needs to approve of your life is you.
A. Thus, to live a true life, we have to stop.
B. However, the pain of self-regret remains.
C. We feel as if eyes are following us everywhere.
D. Developing a social mask is necessary for changes.
E. It makes us avoid wearing bold colors or speaking our minds.
F. They are entirely in our heads, but the prison they create is real.
G. Without them, fitting into society would be nearly impossible.
F 37. C 38. G 39. B 40. A
36. 上文People in the public eye are often heavily judged, and the comments can be cruel. We may not have people commenting on our daily choices in People magazine, but we absolutely have the ‘invisible audiences’ that heavily influence our decisions. 符合语境,该项中的They指代前文的“invisible audiences”,且prison与后文“It imprisons our true selves”相呼应,说明隐形观众虽是想象的,但造成的束缚是真实的。
37. 上文Researchers have proven that we often think too much of how much people actually notice us. ,该项是对“think too much of how much people actually notice us”的形象化表达,说明我们总觉得被注视。空后Because of this, we constantly edit our lives for an audience that isn’t even watching even though we aren’t famous superstars. 38. 上文We all have them: the masks of the “successful businessman” or the “nice mom.” However, if we wear these masks for too long, the true face underneath begins to disappear.
39. 上文When our lives come to an end, the fear of judgment disappears.
40. 上文As the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “Care about what other people think, and you will always be their prisoner.”

On April 4, the first day of the Qingming holidays, 26-year-old Sun Yiheng traveled a long distance to a tea garden in Huzhou to experience firsthand the traditional art of tea picking. For Sun, tea has long been 56 essential part of daily life in China, which made her eager to discover the way 57 fresh tea leaves turn into the drink we enjoy. Although tea was familiar to her, Sun found it fascinating to learn about the process of making it in person, and visiting during spring, a season associated with renewal, also 58 (expose) her to nature up close.
Sun is not alone. On China’s lifestyle-sharing platform Xiaohongshu, posts about tea garden visits and tea culture experiences are becoming 59 (increasing) common. The enthusiasm for tea-picking experiences reflects a growing tendency among young Chinese 60 (step) into tradition in a more tangible way.
Zhang Menglu, head of Pu’er Tengyi Tea Co, oversees about 240 hectares of tea gardens in Pu’er. 61 peak season, 80 to 120 participants pour into her tea garden daily. Staff members first teach participants to identify the right buds and pick them carefully. Once 62 (pick), the tea leaves should be processed quickly to preserve their freshness and flavor. The staff then guide participants through each step of 63 (process), so that they can leave with the tea they have made themselves.
Experiential tea picking typically focuses on younger plantation trees, which are easier to manage and better suited for educational tours. By contrast, access to ancient tea trees 64 (restrict) to specified zones so as to minimize human impact, which allows visitors to take part in 65 (immerse) experiences and also helps them gain awareness of ecological protection, according to Zhang.

故填an。
空处为后置定语修饰tendency,应填不定式to step,构成a tendency to do sth.
during / in ... season 表示“在......的季节”。另外,此空在句首,首字母应该大写。故填During / In。
此处为状语从句的省略,完整的从句为once the tea leaves are picked,省略和主句一致的主语the tea leaves和be动词are,保留过去分词picked。

Ranking My Career Choice Essentials
When choosing a future career, I rank the three key factors in this order: interest and passion, salary and self-development, and social recognition and expectations.
Firstly, passion is the core driving force. It keeps us motivated to overcome difficulties and stick to our career long-term. Secondly, salary and self-development matter greatly. While a salary that is decent can guarantee our life quality, constant self-improvement is what sustains long-term career growth. Lastly, I put social recognition last. Others’ expectations are external and should not limit our personal career planning.

M: It’s unbearably hot today with strong sunlight. I wish it could be windy tomorrow.
W: I hope so. But that’s typical during this time. The weather report says it would be the same tomorrow.
Text 2
W: You’ve been sitting there for hours. Are you bored yet?
M: No. I love this show. And I’m sitting far enough, Mom.
W: That’s not the point. It’s not good for your eyes if you watch TV for too long.
Text 3
W: The traffic outside is heavy all day long. It’s really hard to stand the noise.
M: I feel the same. And the building is too old.
W: I’ve checked several flats in the suburbs. They are quiet and with plenty of sunshine.
M: Great! We can go to see them this weekend.
Text 4
M: According to the map, the train station should be here, but this looks like a building site.
W: Look at this sign. The station is being modernized, and passengers have to use the side entrance.
M: OK. Let’s head over there.
Text 5
W: I’m in a cold sweat and have a headache. And I’m thirsty, too.
M: Did you eat a hamburger at the market?
W: How did you know?
M: Because I’ve treated someone with the same symptoms. You probably have food poisoning.
Text 6
W: Eric, I just finished recording the audio guide for the pencil drawings that’ll be included in our modern art exhibit next week.
M: That’s great. But unfortunately, we have to make one change. The drawing by Claudia Hoffman will no longer be in the exhibit. There was a scheduling mix-up, and it was promised to another museum starting next week.
W: Oh, will you put anything in its place?
M: No. We’ll just remove it.
W: OK, I’ll make that change to the audio guide recording right away.
Text 7
W: Welcome to Lakeview Hotel. How may I help you?
M: My name is Robert Stark, and I have a reservation for two nights, a single bed.
W: OK, Mr. Stark, please fill out this form.
M: Sure. Where is the main lecture hall? I don’t want to be late for the writers’ gathering tomorrow. Many famous writers will be here. I’m very excited to attend their lectures.
W: The main lecture hall is on the second floor. Mr. Stark, I will put you in Room 403.
M: Thank you. And where can I buy a nice souvenir?
W: There is a large souvenir shop two blocks away, about ten minutes’ walk from here. It’s across the street from a grocery store. Here is your room key. Enjoy your stay, Mr. Stark.
M: OK. Could you direct me to the lift?

W: Thank you! It’s so considerate of him to take care of these details. We are pleased with our room and service.
M: Glad to hear that. Can I help you with anything else?
W: Yes. We’d like to order breakfast in our room tomorrow morning.
M: We have Chinese, French and American breakfasts. Which do you prefer?

W: Hi, Jack! Do you know our school has opened a mental health station recently?
M: Really? I didn’t notice that. What’s it for?
W: It’s to help us handle pressure from exams and relationships — many of us are actually stressed out lately.
M: That’s a good idea! Do they have professional teachers there?
W: Sure, and they offer one‑to‑one talk. Sometimes, they will invite experts to give lectures on stress management. For students with serious troubles, they will help them contact doctors at the school hospital.
M: That’s great. How can we get help?
W: You can either walk in directly or call them at 63529871 to make an appointment. It’s open from 4:00 to 6:00 every weekday afternoon.
M: Thank you for telling me so much. I think it will be a warm place for all of us.
W: I hope so. I just want it to really help us, not just be for show.

In a small Chinese village, there was a young girl named Mei who had a dream of becoming a teacher. Despite her love for learning and eagerness to help her classmates, she had to drop out of school due to her family’s poverty.
One day, a volunteer teacher named Ms. Wang came to the village. Learning about Mei’s situation, she offered to pay for Mei’s education. Mei, thrilled with this opportunity, worked hard to improve her grades.
With Ms. Wang’s guidance, Mei applied to a prestigious university and was accepted. During her time at the university, she faced many challenges, but she never gave up. She received scholarships and participated in extracurricular activities, making new friends and growing as a person.
