Three Free Movie Websites for Your In-Home Movie Night
It’s no secret that paid TV services are expensive and often come with many unnecessary extra charges. There are plenty of free movie websites for you to access that will replace those paid services, so there’s no need to stress about missing out on your favorite or must-see movies at a high cost.
Website’s name
Profile
Popcornflix
Popcornflix features a smooth, easy-to-use interface (界面), and you don’t have to create an account. Families will also like PopcornflixKids. However, you can only choose from 52 options for stand-up comedy specials, and 12 of them are actually old Gallagher routines. Plus, you’ll have to watch advertisements every 15 minutes, and the video quality is somewhat poor.
Facebook Watch
Facebook Watch often winds up being a mix of random videos, but you can find some novel treasures. Like YouTube, users and brands of Facebook Watch can create and upload their own videos. It also hosts some original shows. Therefore, don’t expect to find any full-length movies on here. You will need a Facebook account to view these shows.
Tubi
Tubi features over 12,000 movies and TV shows to watch. It’s also relatively easy to explore niche topics (小众话题), such as “Full Moon Features”. Tubi makes profits by showing advertisements throughout the movies. While there are plenty of movies to watch, don’t expect to find a ton of newer, high-dollar productions.
Note: You are expected to take each free site’s pros and cons into account and then you can pick one according to your own needs.
21.What might be a disadvantage of Popcornflix?
A.It ignores kids’ needs. B.It freezes occasionally.

The first time I saw an elderly gentleman head to toe in shining buttons sewn into his black suit, I was fascinated by what he was wearing. I later learned he was a member of the Pearly (珍珠) Kings and Queens Association.
At the heart of the century-old tradition stands Henry Croft. Raised in an orphanage (孤儿院), Henry became a road sweeper. He grew close to the market traders known for their community pride and outfits dotted with pearl buttons. Motivated by their fashion and their spirit of mutual aid, Henry created a suit decorated with pearl buttons to catch the eye while raising money for his childhood orphanage.
Henry’s suit became a symbol and so did he. Hospitals and charities across London called on him to aid them in fundraising. Henry turned to the market traders to meet demand. In 1875, the Pearly Kings and Queens were born, a network of 28 pearly families — one for each London borough (自治区) — who have passed the titles and responsibility for charity down through the generations. Once in the Pearlies, members make a lifelong commitment to raising money for charity.
The Pearlies now have a social media presence and a new generation of young Pearlies. I reached out to Harman, a younger member, who spoke about the tradition. “It’s a way of connecting with my history — my family has been part of the Pearlies for over 100 years. There’s something special about putting on buttons, knowing I’m continuing the work my family devoted themselves to,” she said. “It’s also an important part of London’s history and a living working-class tradition, born out of community and the responsibility of looking after those in need. At a time when many communities are struggling, that spirit feels more relevant than ever.”
I visited many more of the Pearlies, including Phyllis Broadbent, the most senior member at 98. On the importance of the Pearlies being multigenerational, Broadbent says, “Like any family, it only works with a mix of experience, knowledge, and energy. Every member of the association brings something vital that keeps it going.”
24.Why did Henry Croft initially create the pearl-button suit?
A.To attract attention for donations.
B.To spread the community pride.
C.To copy the traders’ fashion.
D.To build a charity network.
25.What is required of a Pearly member?
A.Acquiring sewing skills.
B.Being a native Londoner.
C.Contributing personal property.
D.Possessing a lasting passion for service.
26.What does Harman illustrate about the Pearly tradition?
A.It needs more financial support.
B.It calls for more public recognition.
C.It gains popularity through social media.
D.It carries historical significance and social value.
27.Which of the following best describes the Pearlies?
A.Brave and ambitious. B.United and dedicated.
C.Wealthy and fashionable. D.Outgoing and experienced.

A visit to a supermarket offers you choices from a wide range of produce, not only vegetables of all sorts but also berries and other fruit. It’s not so easy for farmers, though. They have to decide what to grow while worrying about getting their crops enough water and wondering if they’ll make money.
Many aspects of farming are difficult, says mathematician Estelle Basor. Farmers face a lot of unknowns, including weather, pests, and an idea in economics called supply and demand.
Basor was one of several mathematicians who worked together to come up with methods to help farmers solve the main problem, that is, to make decisions about what to grow, and especially how to reduce water use.
In recent years, California has suffered a drought. The Pajaro Valley and other areas of the state are feeling the effects of the shortage of rainfall. Many farmers are interested in whether it would be worthwhile to switch to crops that use less water but that people will still buy.
The mathematicians started to build a computer model to collect information on water use, crop prices, and other variables. They then programmed computers to find the combination of crops that would produce the highest profit using the least amount of water.
The initial version modeled a 100-acre farm planted with various combinations of five different crop types. On this virtual farm, raspberries, which use less water, proved to be more profitable than strawberries.
The researchers have been checking with farmers to see whether their model offers reasonable results, and so far the response is encouraging. They hope that their model will eventually help farmers all across the country.
28.What challenge do farmers mainly face according to the passage?
A.Cutting production costs in dry seasons. B.Responding quickly to market demand.
C.Making crop choices under water limits. D.Dealing with risks from new technology.
29.Why did the mathematicians build a computer model for farming decisions?
A.To predict future food shortages. B.To balance profit with water use.
C.To reduce uncertainty in crop pricing. D.To test changes in farming methods.
30.What does the example of raspberries mainly show?
A.Strawberries are harder to manage.
B.Consumer demand decides crop prices.
C.Virtual farms exactly match real farms.
D.Water-efficient crops can be more profitable.
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Data models guide better crop choices. B.Market demand determines crop production.
C.Technology is replacing traditional farming. D.Water shortages are changing farming practices.
D
When people hear the word meek, they often imagine someone who is shy, weak or easily pushed around. Today, the word is often used in a negative sense. However, for many earlier cultures, meekness was considered an important virtue. So how did a word once linked to strength come to suggest weakness?
A modern example helps explain this difference. In 2018, mixed martial arts champion Matt Serra was eating in a restaurant when a drunk man began threatening customers. Although Serra was highly trained and could have easily fought back, he chose not to. Instead, he calmly restrained the man until help arrived. His action showed not weakness but control — the ability to manage his strength rather than simply use it.
This idea reflects the original meaning of meekness. In the past, the word referred to a person who had power but chose to keep it under control. A similar idea appears in horse training. A well-trained horse is not weak; it is strong but able to respond to guidance instead of acting wildly. In this sense, meekness meant strength guided by reason.
Modern language, however, no longer has a widely used word that expresses this exact quality. Today we often use the term self-control, but this word covers many different situations, from resisting unhealthy food to managing emotions. Because the term is so broad, it may fail to capture the powerful idea of controlling one’s own strength.
Some researchers argue that this loss of precise language may matter more than we think. Psychological studies show that people are often more motivated by positive “approach goals”, such as becoming healthier, than by negative “avoidance goals”, such as not getting sick. To form such positive goals, people need clear words to describe the qualities they hope to develop. Without these words, it may become harder to clearly imagine the virtues that shape strong character.
32.Why does the author mention Matt Serra?
A.To show how athletes deal with emergencies.
B.To show the importance of physical strength.
C.To explain how meekness changes over time.
D.To show meekness as controlled inner power.
33.What does the underlined word “capture” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A.Indicate clearly.
B.Change slightly.
C.Copy completely.
D.Hide intentionally.
34.What may happen without clear names for important qualities?
A.People may reduce their use of abstract expressions.
B.People may struggle to grasp such qualities clearly.
C.People may find it difficult to describe their experiences.
D.People may misunderstand the meaning of certain words.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Meekness: A False Sign of Weakness.
B.Meekness: A Traditional Moral Quality.
C.The Meaning of Abstract Moral Terms.
D.The Role of Language in Human Virtue.
Anger is the most destructive emotion. When you are in a temper, you make hasty ill-considered decisions that you will probably regret. You will also regret reckless language spoken without thought. 36 Here are some ways that you can combat the causes of anger.
37 You have to accept that sometimes things do go wrong and that people are not always lovely. Try to accept that other people do behave in ways that will make you both frustrated and angry. Often, there might be an excellent reason why a person acted in away that you found unacceptable.
Realizing that no one is perfect is a good start to avoiding getting angry. 38 Neither will they behave in the same way that you would in a given situation.
Reacting angrily is a hard habit to break. The trick is to avoid reacting when faced with a situation that usually angers. Anger is a negative reaction, but in this type of situation, there is no value in reacting by forming positive thoughts. 39 This way, your anger will not get the emotional food it needs to survive.
Don’t take the easy way when you get angry. We all get tempted to throw something, hit something, or scream when we are angry. You might say you feel better after an angry outburst, but that is just the after-effect of the adrenalin (肾上腺素) your body released while you were angry. A reaction like that is the easy way. It is much harder to stay calm, to walk away from conflict, or to take a deep breath and act normally. 40
A.Stop trying to manage your anger.
B.What can be done to control anger?
C.You need to learn not to respond at all.
D.That, however, is what you must do if you are to stop anger.
E.You need to change your attitude to the way the world works.
F.Taking positive steps will help you overcome feelings of anger.
G.Also, you need to accept that not everyone has the same standards as you.

Jack wiped his hands on his workwear, the warm smell of fresh bread filling his small shop. The morning rush was over. He was about to take a short break when a large shadow fell across the shop window. He looked up and froze. A big, thin dog had its front paws on the counter, its nose pressing against the pile of bread to be sold. Before Jack could move or speak, the dog grabbed a large loaf of bread with its big mouth.
“Hey!” Jack shouted, rushing from behind the counter. The dog pulled back its front paws, the bread held in its jaws, and ran down the quiet street. Anger rose in Jack’s chest. That was his best and expensive bread! He grabbed a broom (扫帚) handle near the door and ran out after the “thief”.
The dog ran fast, but Jack kept it in sight. It turned into a narrow backstreet between two old buildings. Jack followed, completely out of breath. He entered the backstreet and stopped. The big dog was sitting on the ground, panting heavily, beside a large cardboard box. Its mouth was empty. “Ah,” Jack thought, “the bread must be in the box.” His grip tightened on the broom handle. This “thief” needed to learn a lesson.
He walked slowly toward the dog, his shoes making soft sounds on the stones of the backstreet. The dog turned its head and saw him. It was clearly tired, too tired to move a step. It just watched him, its body low to the ground. Jack raised the broom handle, ready to give it a sudden blow. Just then, a soft, high sound came from the box. Jack’s arm stopped in the air. He took a careful step forward and looked into the box. Inside, a tiny puppy (小狗) was happily eating pieces of the “stolen” bread, its little tail wagging wildly. The big dog, the mother, watched her baby, and then looked back at Jack with tired eyes.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Jack slowly lowered the broom handle to the ground.

【答案】17.A 18.C 19.A 20.A
M: As a young child, I always enjoyed physical challenges more than mental ones. I liked to run and build swings. At that stage, I hadn’t yet learned to climb or swim, but I would have loved to try those two. One day, we had a physical education class at school. We did the long jump and handstands, but it was when I tried to do a forward roll, the disaster struck. Somehow, I twisted my neck in an extremely painful way. I screamed loudly, and the teachers were very concerned. An ambulance was called, and I was taken to a hospital. The doctors fitted me with a collar, and I was told to avoid exercise and stay away from school for eight weeks. At first, I was very bored. Having to keep still all day was no fun. So I started to read. I looked at books on the shelf at home. I wasn’t interested in love stories. I avoided those, but crime and adventure did appeal to me. During those eight weeks, I developed a lifelong love of reading. When my collar was removed, the doctors told me not to exercise for another four weeks. Instead of being disappointed, I was happy to devote more time to my new love — reading.

【答案】24.A 25.D 26.D 27.B
根据第二段中的“Motivated by their fashion and their spirit of mutual aid, Henry created a suit decorated with pearl buttons to catch the eye while raising money for his childhood orphanage.(亨利被他们的时尚风格与互助精神所触动,设计了一套缀有珍珠纽扣的西装,既夺人眼球,又能为他儿时所在的孤儿院筹集善款。)”
根据第三段中的“Once in the Pearlies, members make a lifelong commitment to raising money for charity.(一旦加入珍珠王与王后协会,成员就要做出为慈善筹款的终身承诺。)”
根据第四段中Harman所说的“It’s a way of connecting with my history(这是与我的历史建立联系的方式)”以及“It’s also an important part of London’s history and a living working-class tradition, born out of community and the responsibility of looking after those in need.(它也是伦敦历史中重要的一环,是鲜活的工人阶级传统,源于社群互助以及帮扶困难群体的责任担当。)”
根据第三段中的“In 1875, the Pearly Kings and Queens were born, a network of 28 pearly families — one for each London borough (自治区) — who have passed the titles and responsibility for charity down through the generations.(1875年,珍珠国王与珍珠王后群体诞生,这是由28个珍珠家族组成的社群——伦敦的每个行政区各对应一个家族,家族头衔与慈善相关职责世代传承。)”以及最后一段中Phyllis 所说的“Like any family, it only works with a mix of experience, knowledge, and energy. Every member of the association brings something vital that keeps it going.(和任何家庭一样,它的运转离不开经验、学识与活力的共同支撑。协会中的每一位成员都贡献着至关重要的力量,维系着组织持续运行。)”可知,Pearly成员们团结协作且乐于奉献。

【答案】28.C 29.B 30.D 31.A
根据第三段中的“Basor was one of several mathematicians who worked together to come up with methods to help farmers solve the main problem, that is, to make decisions about what to grow, and especially how to reduce water use.(巴索尔是多名数学家之一,他们合作想出办法帮助农民解决主要问题,即决定种植何种作物,尤其是如何减少用水量)”以及第四段“In recent years, California has suffered a drought. The Pajaro Valley and other areas of the state are feeling the effects of the shortage of rainfall. Many farmers are interested in whether it would be worthwhile to switch to crops that use less water but that people will still buy.(近些年,加利福尼亚遭遇干旱。帕哈罗谷与该州其他地区正承受降雨短缺带来的影响。许多农民想知道改种耗水更少且仍有销路的作物是否划算)”可知,农民的主要难题是在用水受限的情况下选择种植作物。
29.细节理解题。根据第五段“The mathematicians started to build a computer model to collect information on water use, crop prices, and other variables. They then programmed computers to find the combination of crops that would produce the highest profit using the least amount of water.(数学家着手搭建计算机模型来收集用水量、作物价格和其他变量信息。之后他们编写程序,找出能用最少水资源实现最高收益的作物组合)”可知,建模目的是平衡收益与水资源消耗。
30.细节理解题。根据第六段中的“The initial version modeled a 100-acre farm planted with various combinations of five different crop types. On this virtual farm, raspberries, which use less water, proved to be more profitable than strawberries.(初代模型模拟了一座百英亩农场,搭配五种不同作物。在这座虚拟农场中,耗水量更低的树莓被证实比草莓收益更高)”可知,树莓的例子表明节水作物收益更高。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第五段“The mathematicians started to build a computer model to collect information on water use, crop prices, and other variables. They then programmed computers to find the combination of crops that would produce the highest profit using the least amount of water.(数学家着手搭建计算机模型来收集用水量、作物价格和其他变量信息。之后他们编写程序,找出能用最少水资源实现最高收益的作物组合)”和尾段“The researchers have been checking with farmers to see whether their model offers reasonable results, and so far the response is encouraging. They hope that their model will eventually help farmers all across the country.(研究人员向农民核验模型结果是否合理,目前反馈喜人。他们希望该模型最终能帮助全国农民)”可知,文章主要介绍了数据模型指导农民优化作物选择。

【答案】32.D 33.A 34.B 35.D
根据第二段中的“His action showed not weakness but control — the ability to manage his strength rather than simply use it.( 他的举动并非软弱,而是一种克制——懂得收束自身力量,而非一味肆意施展。)”和第三段中的“This idea reflects the original meaning of meekness.(这一观点诠释了温顺一词原本的含义。)”
根据上文“Today we often use the term self-control, but this word covers many different situations, from resisting unhealthy food to managing emotions.(如今我们常常用自控力一词,但该词适用场景宽泛,小到抵制垃圾食品、大到管控情绪都可使用。)”
根据最后一段中的“Without these words, it may become harder to clearly imagine the virtues that shape strong character.(缺少这类词汇,人们就越发难以清晰领会那些塑造健全人格的优良品性。)”
36.根据上文“Anger is the most destructive emotion. When you are in a temper, you make hasty ill-considered decisions that you will probably regret. You will also regret reckless language spoken without thought.(愤怒是最具破坏性的情绪。当你脾气不好的时候,你会草率地做出你可能会后悔的决定。你也会后悔不经思考就说出鲁莽的语言)”以及后文“Here are some ways that you can combat the causes of anger.(这里有一些方法可以帮助你克服愤怒的根源)”可知,空处应是过渡句,由生气的坏处过渡到如何克服愤怒,所以B项“What can be done to control anger?(怎样才能控制愤怒呢?)”
37.分析设空,位于段首,是本段的中心句,所以根据后文“You have to accept that sometimes things do go wrong and that people are not always lovely. Try to accept that other people do behave in ways that will make you both frustrated and angry. Often, there might be an excellent reason why a person acted in away that you found unacceptable.(你必须接受有时事情会出错,人们并不总是可爱的。试着接受别人的行为方式会让你既沮丧又生气。通常,可能会有一个很好的理由来解释为什么一个人的行为让你无法接受)”可知,本段主要讲述了你需要改变你对世界运作方式的态度,所以E项“You need to change your attitude to the way the world works.(你需要改变你对世界运作方式的态度)”符合文意。故选E项。
38.根据前文“Realizing that no one is perfect is a good start to avoiding getting angry.(意识到人无完人是避免生气的好开始)”以及后文“Neither will they behave in the same way that you would in a given situation.(他们的行为也不会和你在特定情况下的行为一样)”可知,本段主要讲述了,不要用自己的标准去看待他人,所以G项“Also, you need to accept that not everyone has the same standards as you.(此外,你需要接受并不是每个人都有和你一样的标准)”符合本段主题。故选G项。
39.根据前文“Reacting angrily is a hard habit to break. The trick is to avoid reacting when faced with a situation that usually angers. Anger is a negative reaction, but in this type of situation, there is no value in reacting by forming positive thoughts.(愤怒是一个很难改掉的习惯。诀窍是在面对通常令人愤怒的情况时避免做出反应。愤怒是一种消极的反应,但在这种情况下,形成积极的想法是没有价值的)”可知,本段主要讲述了不要在愤怒的情况下做出反应,所以C项“You need to learn not to respond at all.(你要学会完全不回应)”符合本段主题。故选C项。
40.分析设空,位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Don’t take the easy way when you get angry. We all get tempted to throw something, hit something, or scream when we are angry. You might say you feel better after an angry outburst, but that is just the after-effect of the adrenalin (肾上腺素) your body released while you were angry. A reaction like that is the easy way. It is much harder to stay calm, to walk away from conflict, or to take a deep breath and act normally.(当你生气的时候,不要轻易就范。当我们生气的时候,我们都会想要扔东西,打东西,或者尖叫。你可能会说你在生气后感觉好多了,但那只是你生气时身体释放的肾上腺素的后遗症。这样的反应很简单。要想保持冷静,远离冲突,或者深呼吸,正常行事,都要困难得多)”可知,D项“That, however, is what you must do if you are to stop anger.(然而,如果你要停止愤怒,那就是你必须做的)”符合文意,和前文构成转折关系,总结前文。

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Jack slowly lowered the broom handle to the ground.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He turned and walked quickly back toward his shop.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Jack slowly lowered the broom handle to the ground. He bent down, keeping his movements gentle so he wouldn’t scare the mother dog, who was watching him closely. Seeing the bony mother and the eager puppy, his anger melted away, replaced by understanding. “You were just hungry, weren’t you?” he said softly, more to himself. He reached out a hand slowly, letting the mother dog smell it. She gave a small, tired wag of her tail. Jack knew a light tap wouldn’t solve anything. These animals needed help.
He turned and walked quickly back toward his shop. His mind was now set on a new plan. He returned with a paper bag containing two fresh loaves and a bowl filled with water from his sink. Placing them carefully near the box, he stepped back. The mother dog approached cautiously, drank deeply, and then began to share the food with her puppy. Every few days after that, Jack would leave food and fresh water near the box.
