B As summer approaches, many kids and teenagers may find that they have more time in hand. One great way to make use of the extra time is to go on an adventure and travel. Clearly, I am not a naturally adventurous person, but I have found that taking the risk and challenging myself to explore and travel to unfamiliar places can be a very rewarding experience. Because I am usually quite busy during the school year, most of my travels take place during the summer. Over the past few summers, I have hiked in the Grand Canyon, explored Niagara Falls, and camped out in upstate New York. Although these experiences are varied, they are similar in that they instill (灌输) a sense of appreciation for nature and a more balanced view on life. When I hiked in the Grand Canyon, for example, I was in awe(敬畏) of the geological influences that shaped the canyon. Adventures, of course, are not limited to hiking. There are many other choices, such as camping, volunteering in a foreign environment and travelling to different countries. In my opinion, adventures are more enjoyable with family or a few friends. There is a sense of bonding that one only gets through spending time together in outdoor adventures. For example, when I was in Boy Scouts, I often went on weekend camping trips with my friends. When I came back from a Boy Scouts camping trip, I often was eager to go outside more and explore the parks and nature around me. Next fall, I will attend college. In the meantime though, I hope to make the most of my summer to explore and travel. Now, I am planning on hiking and camping out in Maine. When I visited Maine last fall, I was amazed by how beautiful it was and the tall trees and coasts that exist, and I really hope to enjoy the beauty of nature there this summer. 4. We can learn from the first paragraph about the author? A. He is an adventurous person by nature B. He likes challenging himself by travelling C. He enjoys travelling with other adventurers D. He needs others’ help when going on an adventure 5. Which of the following can make people’s adventure more enjoyable according to the author? A. Going to different countries. B. Going to unfamiliar places. C. Travelling with their family or friends. D. Travelling to distant places by themselves. 6. What will the author do this summer? A. Explore Niagara Falls. B. Hike in the Grand Canyons. C. Camp out in upstate New York. D. Hike and camp out in Maine. 7. Who is probably the author? A. A high school student. B. A college student. C. A friendly guide. D. A warm-hearted teacher. C When it comes to navigating (导航) areas, past studies showed that the abilities don’t truly kick in until 12. However, a new study has revealed that children aged 5 can find their way around large spaces. The researchers involved with this study previously concentrated on three regions of the adult brain that help navigation: PPA, which lets us recognize places and assign them to different categories, RSC, which maps these places within a larger space and OPA, which keeps us from running into objects. In 2024, they found that the system associated with OPA doesn't fully develop until the age of 8. However, they theorized that younger children must still be able to create a map of their surroundings, even before they can walk well. The new study confirmed that RSC is already well-developed in children younger than 8. The results come from an interesting experiment involving five-year-old participants who became familiar with a virtual location called “Tiny Town” full of entertaining landmarks like ice cream stores, playgrounds and fire stations. “We want to get answers, but it’s also important that participants have a good time and a good impression of science,” said Yaelan Jung, first author of the study. Then the researchers conducted fMRI scans (磁共振扫描) on the children, during which they participated in a game-like task where they were shown images from Tiny Town and pressed a button if the images accurately related. Data from the scans proved that the children were able to create a map in their minds, using RSC in their brains to facilitate navigation in larger spaces. The next step, the researchers say, is to look into the brain development of toddlers (学步孩童) with cleverer strategies. “It’s stimulating to explore how humans use different parts of the brain for complex behaviors and how that changes with age and experiences,” Jung said in a press release. “We’re also laying the groundwork for clinical applications.” 8. According to the new study, why can five-year-olds navigate large areas? A. They can mentally map a large environment. B. Their OPA region has developed to the full. C. Their PPA region helps them avoid objects. D. They can walk well by recognizing places. 9. Why did the researchers design Tiny Town? A. To confirm the accuracy of fMRI scans. B. To improve kids’ scientific competence. C. To make the experiment engaging for kids. D. To adjust kids’ emotion before the experiment. 10. What are Yaelan Jung’s words in the last paragraph mainly about? A. Influence of research strategies. B. Possible direction for further study. C. Demand for a larger sample size. D. Solid evidence of the findings. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Brain Development: A Magic Solution B. Young Children: Natural Navigators at Age 5 C. Tiny Town: A Key to Unlocking Brain Secrets D. Three Regions: Core Parts for Mapping Places D Australians are not, as they sometimes joke, the only people to eat their symbolic national animal. But the hunting of kangaroos causes debates Down Under. Many believe the kangaroos destroy grasslands and cause crashes by jumping in front of cars. Animal-rights types argue killing them is inhumane (不人道的), and that kangaroo meat is full of bacteria. But both sides are mad about a new film, which shows cruel killing and suggests that hunting is reducing the population. “We’ve learned how polarising the subject is in Australia,” Mick McIntyre, one of its makers, told a local paper. Annual surveys suggest that there are more than 47 million kangaroos bounding through the wild. Animals, like dingoes, which feed on them, are becoming rare, so when the grass they eat is sufficient, their numbers jump. State governments have long set “harvesting” quotas (定额) to keep the four most populous species in check. But some ecologists suggest that the hunting is damaging, and that the population estimates are over-optimistic. Those in favour of hunting point out that Australia earns $175m from it annually. And some scientists argue that kangaroos are a more sustainable source of protein than cows or sheep. Yet the industry is under pressure abroad. Heartwarming campaigns have turned shoemakers against kangaroo leather and weakened foreign appetite for the meat. Russia, once the biggest consumer of kangaroo meat, has issued a ban out of concern for food safety. In the eight years since it first did so, the value of Australia's kangaroo-meat exports has fallen sharply. As a result, professional hunters were paid less than before. And they killed 1.4 million kangaroos in 2016, a fifth of the permitted maximum. But a higher kangaroo population simply means that more will die in the next drought, says George Wilson of the Australian National University, Worse, he says, in Queensland, landholders have been accused of poisoning kangaroos and building fences to prevent them from reaching water. The back and forth is endless. 12. What does the underlined word “polarizing” in the first paragraph probably mean? A. Abstract. B. Divided. C. Innovative. D. Amazing. 13. According to the text, what is a reason for kangaroo population increase? A. The ban on hunting quotas. B. Their diverse species. C. Their bounding abilities. D. The decline of natural enemies. 14. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. Why kangaroo development should be sustainable. B. How kangaroo goods market expands abroad. C. Why some people support kangaroo hunting. D. How exports of kangaroo products suffer. 15. How would George Wilson describe the situation kangaroos face? A. Out of the frying pan, into the fire. B. The survival of the fittest. C. While the cat is away, the mice will play. D. Let sleeping dogs lie. Live-stream marketing: A rural rags-to-riches story? Short videos or live-streams, the key is to meet consumers’ demand. High-quality products alone aren’t enough; they must consider buyers’ preferences as well. A. There arises a question. B. Policies should be made to protect the environments ? C. The expansion of 5G technology is a vital contribution. D. The biggest barrier is lack of efficient marketing channels. E. She rarely spoke to anyone and always sat alone in the corner of the classroom, staring blankly at her textbooks as if trying to become invisible. Most of my classmates, including my own circle of popular friends, considered her ‌“weird” and deliberately (故意) kept a safe distance from her. I didn’t actively bully (欺负) her, but I certainly never made any effort to welcome her either. I was perfectly comfortable staying in my own group, secretly afraid that associating with her might damage my carefully built social status in high school. One rainy Tuesday afternoon, the school cafeteria was exceptionally crowded, stuffy, and noisy. The air was thick with the smell of fried food and wet raincoats. Everyone was rushing to grab their lunch and find a dry seat. Lily, holding a heavy plastic tray (托盘) full of hot tomato soup, spaghetti, and a carton of milk, was nervously navigating through the chaotic sea of students. Just as she was passing our table, a tall boy from the soccer team suddenly backed up without looking over his shoulder, bumping hard into her. With a loud, echoing crash, Lily’s tray hit the floor. The hot soup splashed onto her white sneakers (运动鞋), the spaghetti scattered everywhere like tangled (缠结的) worms, and the milk formed a large white puddle on the dirty tiles (瓷砖). The noisy cafeteria instantly fell silent, followed by a wave of harsh laughter and cruel whispers. ‌“Watch where you’re going, clumsy!” someone shouted from the back of the room. Instead of helping her, the students nearby quickly stepped back, looking at her with disgust (厌恶) as if she were a walking disaster. Lily stood frozen in the center of the mess, her face turning pale. She quickly dropped to her knees, desperately trying to scoop up (舀起) the ruined food with her bare, trembling hands. I sat at my table just a few feet away, watching the whole humiliating (令人难堪的) scene unfold. My friends were giggling and pointing at her. 4. Three Regions: Core Parts for Mapping Places 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. 故选A。 根据文章第三段“The results come from an interesting experiment involving five-year-old participants who became familiar with a virtual location called “Tiny Town” full of entertaining landmarks like ice cream stores, playgrounds and fire stations. “We want to get answers, but it’s also important that participants have a good time and a good impression of science,” said Yaelan Jung, first author of the study. 根据文章最后一段““It’s stimulating to explore how humans use different parts of the brain for complex behaviors and how that changes with age and experiences,” Jung said in a press release. “We’re also laying the groundwork for clinical applications.” 根据文章第一段“However, a new study has revealed that children aged 5 can find their way around larges paces. B。 D Australians are not, as they sometimes joke, the only people to eat their symbolic national animal. B 13. D 14. D 15. 根据划线单词上文“But the hunting of kangaroos causes debates Down Under. 根据文章第二段“Animals, like dingoes, which feed on them, are becoming rare, so when the grass they eat is sufficient, their numbers jump. 根据文章第三段“Those in favour of hunting point out that Australia earns $175m from it annually. 根据文章最后一段“But a higher kangaroo population simply means that more will die in the next drought, says George Wilson of the Australian National University, Worse, he says, in Queensland, landholders have been accused of poisoning kangaroo sand building fences to prevent them from reaching water. The back and forth is endless. A“Out of the frying pan, into the fire. 故选A。 Live-stream marketing: A rural rags-to-riches story? For many years, quality agricultural products were unable to sell in faraway provinces. ___16___ It prevented them from accessing a wider, urban client. In most cases, because farmers failed to directly reach consumers, their heavy physical labor resulted in very little income. In this regard, live-stream marketing may appeal to young migrant workers and convince them to return home in the countryside. ___17___ In Yunnan Province, southwest China, live-stream marketing is currently the most popular way of pushing local products to consumers across the country. ___18___ It is turning the smart-phone into a new farming tool by fashioning new shopping centers. Live-streaming has greatly boosted the province’s produce sales in the past two years. We now have a great business model in place, combining products with high-quality live stream platforms and support packages from the government. ___19___ Anyway, the continuous development of live-stream marketing is ready to play a big role in raising rural incomes in relatively backward provinces like Yunnan. E-commerce live-streaming is doing pretty well nowadays, but farm produce only accounts for a small share, mainly due to the lack of experienced hosts and infrastructure in rural areas. ___20___ How to grow live stream marketing for farm products? Short videos or live-streams, the key is to meet consumers’ demand. High-quality products alone aren’t enough; they must consider buyers’ preferences as well. A. There arises a question. B. Policies should be made to protect the environments ? C. The expansion of 5G technology is a vital contribution. D. The biggest barrier is lack of efficient marketing channels. E. More primary schools should be built in the rural areas. F. But we should establish a complete supply chain based on strict standards. G. Once back home they can introduce digitally advanced approaches to agricultural management. 16. D 17. G 18. C 19. F 20. The event taught me that a small act of kindness could make a big difference. 根据第一段中“I didn’t actively bully (欺负) her, but I certainly never made any effort to welcome her either. I was perfectly comfortable staying in my own group, secretly afraid that associating with her might damage my carefully built social status in high school.(我没有主动欺负她,但我当然也从未努力去欢迎她。 再结合续写第一段开头“Seeing her trembling hands and the tears welling up in her eyes, I couldn’t sit still any longer.(看到她颤抖的双手和眼中涌出的泪水,我再也坐不住了。)” 根据续写第二段开头“With the mess finally cleaned up, Lily slowly stood up and looked at me.(狼藉终于清理干净后,莉莉慢慢站起来看着我。)” 四个选项中,只有D项“I help Lily finish cleaning up the mess.(我帮助莉莉清理完残局。)” 根据续写第二段开头“With the mess finally cleaned up, Lily slowly stood up and looked at me.(狼藉终于清理干净后,莉莉慢慢站起来看着我。)” 根据第二段开头“With the mess finally cleaned up, Lily slowly stood up and looked at me.(狼藉终于清理干净后,莉莉慢慢站起来看着我。)” 根据第四段中“Lily stood frozen in the center of the mess, her face turning pale. She quickly dropped to her knees, desperately trying to scoop up (舀起) the ruined food with her bare, trembling hands.(莉莉僵立在狼藉中央,脸色变得苍白。 以及“I sat at my table just a few feet away, watching the whole humiliating (令人难堪的) scene unfold.(我坐在离她只有几英尺远的桌旁,看着这令人难堪的一幕展开。)” Realizing that she was entirely helpless and abandoned by everyone, I couldn’t help but feel a rush of deep sympathy. 根据第二段开头“With the mess finally cleaned up, Lily slowly stood up and looked at me.(狼藉终于清理干净后,莉莉慢慢站起来看着我。)” Side by side, we gathered the scattered food and wiped away the last pool of milk. 根据第二段开头“With the mess finally cleaned up, Lily slowly stood up and looked at me.(狼藉终于清理干净后,莉莉慢慢站起来看着我。)” Moved by her timid but grateful gaze, I smiled warmly and invited her to sit with me. Looking at her genuine and bright smile, a wave of immense relief and joy washed over me. The event taught me that a small act of kindness could make a big difference.
