When my husband Paul talked me into adopting a dog,I was filled with doubts. At 65, I thought we should be planning trips, not cleaning up dog hair. I never imagined I could grow fond of a dog, especially not the scruffy one with a torn ear from the shelter. I agreed only for Paul’s sake.
Casey burst into our lives like a storm. Our morning walks turned into a daily struggle. Driven by his sharp sense of smell, he would tug me toward every scrap of leftover pizza or chicken nugget lying on the ground. At the mere sight of a squirrel, he would fly into a frenzy, leaping and howling, as I struggled desperately to hold him in check. I felt worn-out and defeated, repeatedly met with the mocking question, “Who’s really walking whom?”
Hope arrived with Laurie, a young dog trainer. She explained that Casey was a hound — born to hunt. Laurie taught us not to yell, but to use a firm, confident tone to break his focus. I practiced calling out, “Casey!” with authority, something that did not come naturally to me. When he listened, he would get a treat along with a warm“Good boy”. It was a new language we were learning together.
Slowly, the chaos began to abate. I grew familiar with his quirks, and he began responding to my voice. The constant pulling transformed into a gentle rhythm except for occasional bursts of excitement. The clink of his collar tags kept time with my footsteps. My frustration softened into understanding, and eventually, into affection. Our walks were no longer a clash but a teamwork.
The greatest gift, however, was inner peace. I had always been a light, restless sleeper. One sleepless night, I found Casey sound asleep on the couch, breathing deeply and steadily. I rested my head against his warm chest, and for the first time, my worries melted away along with his calm, rhythmic breathing.
This unexpected companion, once a source of anxiety, had quietly taught me how to find rest and acceptance. He was no longer just Paul’s dog; he had become the beating heart of our home.
4. How did the author initially feel about walking the dog?
A. Panicked. B. Easy. C. Indifferent. D. Frustrated.
5. What led to Casey’s misbehavior on early walks?
A. He had little familiarity with walking routes. B. He couldn’t resist his inborn urge to explore.
C. He failed to focus in the absence of a trainer. D. He disliked the author’s way of handling him.
6. What does the underlined word “abate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Cease. B. Unfold. C. Fade. D. Develop.
7. What was the greatest gift the author received from Casey?
A. A positive mindset. B. A precious friendship.
C. A sense of belonging. D. A cure for restlessness.

An interesting cultural phenomenon occurs every summer when Europeans and Americans visit each other’s continents. Europeans complain that shops and restaurants in America are so coldly air-conditioned as to require a jacket. Americans holidaying in Europe grow impatient on finding that European old-world buildings cause them to sweat.
The divide is rooted in both climate and culture. Long before American companies began using cooling chemicals for air-conditioning, Southern Europe was built to handle heat. In traditional houses, white paint and shaded courtyards keep things cool. Windows are thrown open and rooms aired in the mornings. Shutters keep out the midday sun. Northern Europe, meanwhile, is mostly spared the problem by its cold weather thanks to geographical advantages.
These days, as global warming is putting Europe to test, some Europeans who celebrate green lifestyles still feel pangs of carbon guilt about equipping their houses with air-conditioning. Actually, they needn’t. The rapid expansion of renewable energy in Europe means that lowering the temperature will not do much to melt the glaciers. In Spain, solar capacity has grown nearly ten times in the past decade, so it causes fewer carbon emissions to generate power. Portugal and France do just as well, thanks to dozens of nuclear reactors.
Apart from climate morality, many Europeans also worry about the costs, but there is good news on that front as well. Their homes are smaller than American ones, which helps them save two thirds as much electricity on average. Moreover, the solar energy boom means that power is not just greener but cheaper than before. And some governments even offer funding to make old houses energy-efficient.
As the world warms, Europe is heating up faster than any other region. Those who prefer to tough out the summer are free to do so. However, as Dr. Elena Rossi, a climate researcher, points out: “Cooling should no longer be a luxury but a basic necessity.” Therefore, the ultimate goal should be to make cheap, clean air-conditioning for everyone.
8. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By criticizing energy waste. B. By describing a tourist trend.
C. By presenting a cultural conflict. D. By analyzing different personalities.
9. What contributes to the cooling of houses in Southern Europe?
A. Adjusted lighting system. B. Modern cooling technology.
C. Unique geographical advantages. D. Traditional architectural wisdom.
10. Which of the following is an example of “climate morality”?
A. Using renewable energy to lower electricity bills.
B. Refusing air-conditioning to cut carbon emissions.
C. Upgrading old houses to gain government funding.
D. Expanding power capacity to promote cozy lifestyles.
11. What do Dr. Elena Rossi’s words mean?
A. Traditional cooling methods are outdated.
B. Affordable air-conditioning should be accessible.
C. The public should avoid using air-conditioners.
D. People can choose to endure the summer heat.

AI systems are often described as “brain-like” because they can predict activity in parts of the brain that help us recognize objects. Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction. Researchers from York University wanted to determine whether these systems truly operate like biological vision.
The researchers reversed (反向开展) that familiar test. If AI genuinely reflects the brain, they reasoned, then recorded brain activity should also predict the model’s internal responses.
The researchers tested the models with 1,320 natural photographs and realistic synthetic (合成的) images. The set included bears, elephants, faces, apples, cars, dogs, chairs, planes, birds, and zebras shown against indoor, outdoor, and other natural backgrounds. They also used 300 additional images describing the same objects in changed forms, including outlines, drawings, simplified representations, and artistic variations. This broader range helped test whether the relationship between brain activity and AI features held across different visual styles.
“The results were striking. While AI models can predict the neurons (神经元) we recorded in the brain fairly well, the reverse is not true. Interestingly, this is not the case when neurons from one brain are compared against ones from another brain, and the one-sided imbalance disappears,” says York University Assistant Professor Kohitij Kar.
This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ from those used by the brain. Kar warns that the mismatch could widen as models become more complex. If an AI model predicts neurons but its own internal features cannot be predicted from neural activity, it may not provide a reliable explanation of how the brain works.
Researchers increasingly use AI models to design studies of human behavior, including clinical research. Much of that work assumes the systems process the world like the brain.
More accurate brain-like models could eventually support research involving conditions related to the brain. For now, however, using systems that do not match brain function well to interpret human behavior carries risks. Comparable models are also being applied to hearing, language and movement, making reliable testing important across several fields.
12. What did most previous studies focus on concerning AI models?
A. How the brain genuinely reflected them. B. How they were integrated into the brain.
C. Whether they could predict brain activity. D. Whether they took control of the neurons.
13. What does the brain fail to do in the reverse test?
A. Recognize objects in natural photographs. B. Process visual information like AI models.
C. Forecast neurons from another similar brain. D. Equally predict AI models’ internal features.
14. Why is clinical research mentioned in paragraph 6?
A. To doubt the reliability of current AI models. B. To highlight the significance of the reverse test.
C. To sing high praises for technological advances. D. To prove the similarity between AI and the brain.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Novel Test on Advanced AI Models B. Brain-Like AI Models Matter in Research
C. AI Models May Not Think Like the Brain D. A Way to Improve AI’s Prediction Accuracy

I had been so busy with work that I had little time to spend with my nine-year-old son,Mike. Last summer, when I finally had a day off, Mike told me the school would be hosting a cookie auction (拍卖). Each student was supposed to bake cookies with their father.
I’d never baked cookies, so we followed the instructions carefully. We opened a packet of instant cookie mix, added the required ingredients, shaped the dough (面团) into small rounds, and confidently placed them on a baking tray in the oven. Taking them out after fifteen minutes, I was surprised that the cookies were not the golden and perfectly shaped ones I’d seen in ads. In fact, some were unevenly baked, while others had spread too much on the tray.Mike, however, cherished this opportunity to work with me and was so happy that he didn’t seem to notice the problem.
After letting them cool, we tried decorating the cookies with icing. As a finishing touch, I sprinkled (撒) a few chocolate chips on top, hoping to add a bit of chocolate flavor to the cookies that didn’t look very appetizing. Mike gave me a proud grin; he thought they looked good. By then, we were already running late.
` When we finally hurried to the auction, I was stunned. A long table was filled with a fantastic array of exquisitely designed cookies. In contrast, ours looked embarrassing; some were misshapen, the icing had melted, and the chocolate chips were scattered everywhere. I felt a flush coming to my face, but Mike didn’t seem to be ashamed of our creation. He solemnly placed our cookies at the end of the table. I gave Mike eight dollars, telling him to bid (出价)on the cookies he liked, hoping he would get some nicely made ones to make up for the embarrassment our cookies might bring him.

根据第二段中的“Casey burst into our lives like a storm. I felt worn-out and defeated, repeatedly met with the mocking question, “Who’s really walking whom?”(凯西像一场暴风雨闯入我们的生活。我们清晨的散步变成每日的挣扎。受他敏锐的嗅觉驱使,他会拽着我奔向地上每一块残留的披萨或者鸡块。仅仅看到松鼠,他就会陷入狂乱,蹦跳、嚎叫,而我拼命努力把他控制住。我感到疲惫不堪、备受挫败,不断听到那个戏谑的问题:“究竟是谁在遛谁?”)”可知,一开始遛狗的时候作者觉得很沮丧。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Hope arrived with Laurie, a young dog trainer. She explained that Casey was a hound — born to hunt.(转机来自年轻的训狗师劳里。她解释说凯西是一只猎犬——天生就为捕猎而生。)”可知,凯西是一只猎犬,散步时的不良行为源于无法抵抗与生俱来的探索捕猎本能。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“Slowly, the chaos began to abate. I grew familiar with his quirks, and he began responding to my voice. The constant pulling transformed into a gentle rhythm except for occasional bursts of excitement.(慢慢地,混乱开始abate。我渐渐熟悉他的怪癖,他也开始听从我的声音。持续不断的拉扯变成舒缓的节奏,只是偶尔会突然兴奋。)”可知,之前遛狗一片混乱,之后情况好转,混乱逐渐消退,划线词与fade意思相近,表示“逐渐消退”。

C
C 9. D 10. B 11. B
根据第一段中的“An interesting cultural phenomenon occurs every summer when Europeans and Americans visit each other’s continents. Europeans complain that shops and restaurants in America are so coldly air‑conditioned as to require a jacket. Americans holidaying in Europe grow impatient on finding that European old‑world buildings cause them to sweat.(每年夏天都会发生一个有趣的文化现象:欧洲人和美国人互相到访对方的大洲。欧洲人抱怨美国商店和餐馆的空调冷得厉害,得穿上外套。在欧洲度假的美国人发现欧洲旧式建筑让他们满身大汗,于是变得不耐烦。)”可知,作者通过展示一种文化冲突引出本文话题。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Long before American companies began using cooling chemicals for air‑conditioning, Southern Europe was built to handle heat. In traditional houses, white paint and shaded courtyards keep things cool. Windows are thrown open and rooms aired in the mornings. Shutters keep out the midday sun.(早在美国公司开始将制冷化学物质用于空调设备之前,南欧的建筑就已设计用来应对酷暑。传统住宅依靠白色涂料和背阴庭院维持凉爽。早晨窗户全部敞开,房间通风换气。百叶窗隔绝正午的阳光。)”可知,南欧房屋依靠传统建筑智慧实现降温。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“These days, as global warming is putting Europe to test, some Europeans who celebrate green lifestyles still feel pangs of carbon guilt about equipping their houses with air‑conditioning.(如今,随着全球变暖正在考验欧洲,一些崇尚绿色生活方式的欧洲人,在给自己住宅安装空调时,依然会心生强烈的碳排放负罪感。)”
根据第五段中的“However, as Dr. Elena Rossi, a climate researcher, points out: “Cooling should no longer be a luxury but a basic necessity.” Therefore, the ultimate goal should be to make cheap, clean air‑conditioning for everyone.(然而,正如气候研究员埃琳娜・罗西博士所指出的:“降温不应再是一种奢侈品,而应成为一项基本必需品。”因此,最终目标应当是为所有人提供廉价、洁净的空调设备。)”可知,罗西博士话语的含义是大众都应该能用上负担得起的空调。
D
C 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第一段“AI systems are often described as “brain-like” because they can predict activity in parts of the brain that help us recognize objects. Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction.(人工智能系统常被描述为“类脑”的,因为它们能够预测大脑中帮助我们识别物体的区域活动。直到现在,科学家们主要从这一个方向进行测试)”可知,到目前为止,先前的研究大多单向测试AI能否预测大脑活动。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“While AI models can predict the neurons (神经元) we recorded in the brain fairly well, the reverse is not true.(虽然AI模型可以相当准确地预测我们记录到的大脑神经元,但反过来则不然)”可知,反向测试中大脑无法同等预测AI模型的内部特征。
根据倒数第二段“Researchers increasingly use AI models to design studies of human behavior, including clinical research. Much of that work assumes the systems process the world like the brain.(研究人员越来越多地使用人工智能模型来设计人类行为研究,包括临床研究。其中大部分工作都假设这些系统像大脑一样处理世界)”可知,举临床研究例子,凸显反向测试的重要意义。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合倒数第三段“This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ from those used by the brain.(这种失衡表明,AI模型可能通过不同于大脑所采用的机制来获得正确的视觉答案)”可知,本文核心是介绍研究发现AI模型的运行机制可能和生物大脑并不相同。

空前“This can involve taking relevant classes, participating in training sessions and volunteering in your community.(这包括参加相关课程、参与培训活动以及在社区中做志愿者。)”说可以去上课、参加培训、做志愿活动,空后“You should build relationships with people who have firsthand experience in the fields. Consider joining professional workshops, attending career fairs and connecting with consultants who can offer advice.(你还应与那些在相关领域拥有亲身经验的人建立联系。可以考虑参加专业工作坊、出席招聘会,或与提供职业建议的顾问取得联系。)”又说要建立联系、找有经验的人、参加工作坊。D项“Besides, getting guidance will also be rewarding.(此外,获得指导也会带来收获。)”用Besides把“技能积累”和“他人指导”并列,guidance精准对应后文consultants/people who have firsthand experience。
空格处是本段主旨句,由空后“Finding a career that fits your interests and values may not happen overnight. It may take time, patience and effort to obtain the perfect job. If you stay focused and keep an open mind, you will increase your chances of finding a rewarding career.(找到符合你兴趣和价值观的职业可能不会一蹴而就。获得理想的工作需要时间、耐心和努力。如果你保持专注并保持开放的心态,就更有可能找到一份令人满意的职业。)”可知,本段主要讲的是找工作需要耐心,要有开放的心态,也就需要坚持不懈和积极的心态,A选项“Be persistent and stay positive.(坚持不懈,保持积极乐观。)”概括了本段内容,可作为主旨句。
【20题详解】
空前“By taking the time to understand your interests, developing your competence, and seeking direction from others, you can set yourself up for success.(通过花时间了解自己的兴趣、提升能力,并向他人寻求方向,你就能为自己铺平通往成功的道路。)”说明了解兴趣,提升能力并向他人寻求方向就可以为自己铺平通往成功的道路,E选项“In time, you’ll find a career that truly makes you satisfied.(假以时日,你终将找到一份真正令自己满意的职业。)”

be meant to do为固定搭配,意为“目的是,理应”;且read(阅读)与其逻辑主语Yongle Dadian之间是被动关系,应用不定式的被动形式to be read,作主语补足语。
in an attempt to do为固定搭配,意为“试图,力求”。

Adding Chinese Elegance to the Corridor
To offer our British exchange students an authentic taste of Chinese culture, I propose integrating Chinese seal script and shadow puppetry into the corridor design.
For the display, we can line the walls with enlarged rubbings of oracle bone inscriptions and ancient seals, paired with bilingual annotations that trace the evolution of Chinese characters. On the opposite wall, we can set up a life-sized shadow puppet stage showing rotating scenes of classic Chinese folk tales. Additionally, a small interactive corner can be reserved for visitors to manipulate simple puppet models on their own. QR codes attached to each exhibit link to short audio clips that introduce relevant cultural backgrounds.
This creative design blends strong visual appeal with immersive hands-on engagement, turning an ordinary corridor into a living cultural gallery that effectively bridges language gaps and promotes cross-cultural communication.

注意:
1.写作词数应为150个左右;

Soon, the auctioneer lifted the first bag of cookies, and the auction began. Parents and kids called out bids one after another, and the beautifully shaped cookies quickly got higher and higher offers. I kept sneaking glances at our messy cookies at the end of the table, my cheeks heating up again. I tried to pull Mike to look at a nicely decorated bag of strawberry cookies, but he shook his head, his eyes fixed firmly on our own cookies. When the auctioneer finally picked up our lopsided bag, I held my breath, waiting for quiet giggles from the crowd.
Mike handed over the eight dollars, smiling as if the cookies were treasure. Before anyone else could call a bid, Mike had already raised his hand and shouted “Eight dollars!” loudly, his voice clear and proud across the room. The auctioneer paused, then knocked the hammer down, and Mike walked briskly to the front to get our cookies. On the way home, he bit into one of our uneven cookies and told me it was the most delicious cookie he had ever eaten. At that moment, I realized what mattered wasn’t how perfect the cookies looked. This messy, imperfect batch baked together with my son was the most precious treasure I had ever had, and I promised myself I would spend more time making such beautiful memories with him.
