Shayden Walker, a young boy from Amarillo, Texas, went to his neighbor’s house hoping to find children his age to play with. He stopped by and began talking to his neighbor through the family’s front door security camera. His neighbor, Brennan Ray, responded and told him there were some kids nearby. But that wasn’t good enough for Shayden. “They’re not my friends anymore because they’re bullies,” the boy explained. The two continued a brief conversation about whether Ray had children of his own that Shayden could play with. However, Ray’s daughter was just a baby, he told the boy.
The conversation inspired Ray to post the video on TikTok, hoping to connect with the boy’s family. “You never know what people are going through until you take the time to talk to them. This young man is well-mannered, kind, and brave. So TikTok, can we help Shayden make some friends?” Ray said in the video. The post quickly gained nearly 69 million views.
Shayden was diagnosed with autism and several other mental health conditions, according to his mother, Krishna Patterson. “People need to understand that these mental health issues can make children, and even adults, feel sad and isolated. Shayden has had difficulty maintaining friendships and sometimes experiences meltdowns that involve crying and accidentally hurting himself or others who try to calm him down,” she added. When these meltdowns occurred, people would say, “We don’t want our kids to hang out with your child.”
After his visit to the Rays’ house and receiving kindness from so many people, Shayden said he felt “pretty good.” He has made friends from all over the world, including Hawaii, China, Australia, and England. Ray and his wife also started a GoFundMe campaign, which raised over $37,000 for Shayden. The money can be used for anything he wants, including a gaming setup, school clothes, and amusement park tickets. Shayden’s mother mentioned that he wants to donate some of the money to charities.
As for Ray, his video has taught the world a valuable lesson in kindness and acceptance.
4. Why did Shayden go to his neighbor’s house?
A. To test the security camera system. B. To report some bullies in the area.
C. To have a casual chat with his neighbor. D. To find someone he could play with.
5. What does Ray think of Shayden after their short conversation?
A. Friendly but negative. B. Brave and intelligent.
C. Caring but dangerous. D. Polite and courageous.
6. What can we learn about Shayden from Paragraph 3?
A. He cries constantly all the time. B. He sometimes causes harm to himself.
C. He behaves just like other children. D. He can control his emotions easily.
7. What will Shayden likely do with the money raised for him?
A. Make more friends online. B. Do something generous and helpful.
C. Help build new schools for children. D. Save it all for amusement park tickets.

“Then would you invest (投资) short-term or long-term?” asks Jennifer Varga, a teacher at Memorial Middle School in New Jersey.
Personal-finance courses targeted at students are being popularized across America, promoted by rules requiring such instruction. Since 2020, 17 states have adopted (正式通过) laws that make taking a financial course necessary for completing high school, bringing the total up to 25. That figure will probably grow.
Students in these classes learn not only how to save their earnings in order to have something to invest in the first place, but also how to solve simple economic problems. Courses cover comparison shopping and the basics of how to properly bank, budget, handle credit and pay for college. Young people badly need these courses.
Few teenagers score highly on financial knowledge assessments (评估). Are personal-finance courses the answer? For a long time, the studies said no. Many analyses, including one cited over 2,500 times, claimed that financial courses were futile. The analyses made intuitive sense, as many teenagers have yet to work or manage a household. But more recent findings have shown an opposite picture. Research has gotten better and the courses themselves have also improved. Studies that use the gold standard of investigation have found the courses are working well and useful in improving financial knowledge and behavior.
The newest survey conducted in 33 countries found people who take these courses master the content better. And students who take personal-finance courses borrow less money. If they do borrow for college, they choose low-cost options. Some worry about adding one more graduation requirement to the long list, but schools are willing to remove courses with less direct bearing on life skills. “When I was 20, it would have been nice to have this class,” Ms. Varga says. She got into some financial trouble as a young adult. “I want them to be better than my generation.”
8. What do we know about personal-finance courses in US high schools?
A. They are limited to high-income areas.
B. They are being gradually removed in many states.
C. They are becoming more widely required.
D. They are being replaced by advanced math courses.
9. What do students learn in personal-finance courses?
A. How to start a financial career. B. The history of banking and economics.
C. How to become professional investors. D. Basic financial skills for everyday life.
10. What does the underlined word “futile” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Nonexistent. B. Imperfect. C. Ineffective. D. Irregular.
11. What do the survey results indicate?
A. The graduation standards are high. B. More attention is needed to finance.
C. More students borrow for college. D. The courses have lasting value.
D
A new outdoor fabric (织物) stores energy by day and then lights up at night. Being tested in a city park, this totally “cool” fabric has attracted interest for its many urban uses.
This is the invention of Anai Green, an industrial and product designer based in Tel Aviv, Israel. She designed a fabric that includes organic and solar photovoltaic cells (光伏电池). The cells capture sunlight and store the energy in strips with LEDs. This allows the fabric to shade public space by day. When night falls, these strips light up. Green said, “We use LumiWeave to light public space without carbon emissions, making the lighting all-natural. And we spread light in the area we want to light only.”
The system was designed to adapt to all weather conditions and can continue to provide lighting even after three days without sunlight. In addition, you simply put LumiWeave up and the sun will do the work. This in itself saves 50 percent of the cost of building standard lighting, and it saves 100 percent on the electricity bills. This is great news for cities. Tel Aviv, Green’s hometown, is trying out LumiWeave in AtidimPark.
The mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, is making efforts to address climate change. “LumiWeave will turn out to be a groundbreaking project,” Huldai said. The mayor added that LumiWeave is especially important as it solves the issue of shading urban areas and uses clean energy.
The new fabric can be fixed atop bike paths, in children’s parks and in walking areas. Many big cities in Israel are planning on adopting LumiWeave. As there is also use for the fabric in outdoor sitting areas of restaurants and hotels, Green has developed a LumiWeave parasol (大遮阳伞). “We are now developing the possibility of controlling it from the phone — we’re creating an application,” Green said. LumiWeave provides an ideal solution for urban parks and gardens. We hope that it will soon be lighting up night skies around the world.
12. How does the new outdoor fabric work?
A. By turning household waste into clean energy.
B. By using photovoltaic cells to promote plant growth.
C. By providing shade and energy in an eco-friendly way.
D. By changing its temperatures according to the weather.
13. Which of the following can be the feature of LumiWeave?
A. It’s functional and cost-effective.
B. It takes up a lot of public space.
C. It’s equipped with self-repair materials.
D. It can broadcast weather conditions more quickly.
14. What’s Ron Huldai’s attitude towards LumiWeave?
A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Supportive.
15. What can we infer about LumiWeave from Paragraph 5?
A. It may cause safety concerns.
B. It will be further developed for wider use.
C. It will be replaced by more intelligent devices.
D. It can reduce the waiting time in some places.

Grandma was the one who woke Benjamin up every morning, made his favorite breakfast, and listened to him talk about school life after dinner. Benjamin loved Grandma very much, and she was his most important person.
One morning during the summer vacation, Grandma suddenly felt very weak. She tried to stand up but fell back on the sofa. Benjamin was scared. He quickly called his dad. When his dad arrived, he carried Grandma to the car and rushed to the hospital. The doctor said Grandma needed to stay in the hospital for a few days to get better. His dad filled out all the hospital forms and stayed with them until evening.
Just then, his dad’s phone rang. It was his boss. The boss said there was an important project to discuss, and his dad had to go to another city right away. His dad looked at Grandma in the hospital bed, then at Benjamin. He frowned (皱眉) and said, “I don’t know what to do. I need to take care of your grandma, but I can’t lose my job either.” Benjamin saw the worry in his dad’s eyes. He took a deep breath and said, “Dad, let me take care of Grandma. I can bring her meals, help her walk, and call the nurse if she needs anything. I’ ll also read some books in the hospital.”
At first, his dad didn’t agree. He said, “You’ re still in high school. It’s too hard for you.” But Benjamin kept trying to persuade him. “Dad, I’m not a little kid anymore. I can do this. And if there’s a problem, I’ ll call you right away,” After talking for a long time, his dad finally nodded. He patted Benjamin’s shoulder and said, “Okay, but you must tell me everything every day.”

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. D

根据第二段“Since 2020, 17 states have adopted (正式通过) laws that make taking a financial course necessary for completing high school, bringing the total up to 25. That figure will probably grow.(自2020年以来,已有17个州通过法律,要求完成高中学业必须修读金融课程,使总数达到25个。这一数字预计还会继续增加)”可知,个人理财课程正在被更广泛地要求。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Courses cover comparison shopping and the basics of how to properly bank, budget, handle credit and pay for college.(课程涵盖比价购物,以及如何正确储蓄、制定预算、管理信用和支付大学学费的基础知识)”可知,学生在个人理财课程中学习日常生活中的基本财务技能。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词前文“Few teenagers score highly on financial knowledge assessments (评估). Are personal-finance courses the answer? For a long time, the studies said no.(很少有青少年在财务知识评估中取得高分。个人理财课程是解决之道吗?长期以来,研究结果一直是否定的)”和“as many teenagers have yet to work or manage a household”可知,研究表明因为很多青少年还没有工作或管理过家庭,个人理财课程并不能解决问题,即没有效果、没有帮助。由此推测,画线词意为“无效果的”,与ineffective同义。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The newest survey conducted in 33 countries found people who take these courses master the content better. And students who take personal-finance courses borrow less money. If they do borrow for college, they choose low-cost options.(一项针对33个国家进行的最新调查显示,参加这些课程的人对学习内容掌握得更好。此外,修读个人理财课程的学生借款金额更少,即使需要为大学贷款,他们也倾向于选择低成本的选项)”可知,这些课程在增加学生的财务知识和提升相关行为上有持久的效果。

Dear Tom,
I’m Li Hua from Class 2. I would like to suggest our class put on an English short play about campus life in the English Culture Festival.
This decision fits well with the festival’s goal to enrich the English learning atmosphere and promote students’ comprehensive development. Firstly, through scriptwriting, we will improve our writing ability, while rehearsing and performing will enable us to speak more fluently and confidently. Secondly staging a short play offers a dynamic approach to cultivating a wide range of competences, from acting and emotion expression to teamwork.
I appreciate your thoughtful consideration and am eager to hear from you!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Possible Version 2:
Dear Tom,
I’m Li Hua from Class 2. I’m writing to propose singing an English song in chorus for the English Culture Festival.
We believe a chorus performance is a perfect choice, as it effectively enhances English skills, fosters teamwork, and promotes inclusiveness. Firstly, mastering song lyrics is a fun and natural way to polish pronunciation and expand vocabulary. Secondly, the collaborative rehearsal process is key to strengthening team spirit and building a strong sense of belonging. Finally, a chorus, by its nature, is highly inclusive as it allows for broad participation.

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Benjamin was a high school student who lived with his grandma. His dad had to travel a lot for work, so he was rarely at home.

After seven days, Grandma felt much better,
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Then, Benjamin looked after his grandma with great care. He bought fresh milk from the shop near the hospital, and then took it to Grandma. He helped Grandma sit up and fed her slowly. When Grandma felt bored, he read storybooks to her —— they were the same booksGrandma used to read to him when he was little. In the afternoon, he read his books on the chair next to the bed. Whenever Grandma wanted to walk around, he held her arm carefully to keep her steady. The nurses all praised Benjamin for being a good boy.
After seven days, Grandma felt much better. When his dad came back, he saw Grandma smiling and Benjamin helping her fold clothes. His dad’s eyes were wet. He walked over and hugged Benjamin tightly. “Thank you, my boy. You did such a great job.” Benjamin smiled and said,“It’s what I should do. Grandma takes care of me every day, so I want to take care of her too.” That week, Benjamin learned that being brave isn’t about not being scared; it’s about doing what needs to be done even when it’s hard.
