A team from Shenzhen Bao’an High School has invented a medicine box to meet the needs of people with eye problems. So far, the medicine box has won many national prizes.
According to the school, 12 students took part in the development and design (设计) of the box. From market research, box design, to app development, the project was completed by the students with the help of their teacher, Zheng Naihao.
The idea of the medicine box came from a field visit. In September 2021, Zheng and his students visited a massage (按摩) shop near the school during their lunch break. Some workers there were blind (失明) people. After the visit, the students began to pay attention to the lives of the blind. They found blind people could only tell different medicines by touch. Sometimes it could be difficult to tell the difference between those small pills (药片). Then they decided to try designing a product to help reduce the risk of taking wrong medicines for these people.
Developing a perfect product was not easy. The team had come up with many ideas, including medicine cups. Some students even thought of using AI, but the idea didn’t work because of too many difficulties. Later, the team held discussions for nearly three months and finally decided to develop a medicine box using speech recognition technology (语音识别技术).
To solve different problems in the development process, the team members used their free time to study on the box. Do animals have feelings like humans? This question often makes scientists and animal lovers talk heatedly. In the past, most scientists thought animals could not feel complex emotions such as empathy. Empathy means understanding how others feel and sharing their pain or joy. For example, if your little brother is sad about his dead turtle, you may feel sorry for him — that’s empathy.
But recent studies and observations show animals might have empathy too. In 1964, a study found that rhesus monkeys would refuse to eat if another monkey got shocked by electricity. Biologist Marc Bekoff also shared some stories. When he watched elephants in Kenya, he saw a lame elephant that walked very slowly. But the other elephants in the group never left it alone. They stopped often to check on it and waited for it to catch up. Bekoff also told about two Alaskan bear cubs. Their mother was shot and killed, so they became orphans. One cub was hurt and limped badly, even swimming very slowly. But its sister stayed with it all the time. She even caught salmon from the river to feed it.
Animals can show other feelings besides empathy. In 2005, a humpback whale got stuck in fishing lines near California’s coast. Divers helped free it. After that, the whale played with each diver and touched them gently with its nose — it seemed to say “thank you”. Gorillas, llamas and many other animals look sad when their partners die. There’s also a story of two homeless terriers. They were taken to an animal shelter. One terrier went blind, and the other helped it get around the new place. It led the blind dog by the neck until the blind one learned where everything was. Maybe humans and animals are not so different after all.
46.What does “empathy” mean in the passage?
A.Feeling happy for others’ success.
B.Understanding and sharing others’ feelings.
C.Refusing to hurt other living things.
D.Helping others out of danger.
47.Why did the rhesus monkeys refuse to eat in the 1964 study?

B.The food was not delicious.
C.Another monkey got an electric shock.
D.They wanted to protect the scientists.
48.What did the elephant’s herd do for the lame elephant?
A.They left it behind to find food.
B.They helped it walk faster.
C.They stopped to check on it and waited.
D.They carried it to a safe place.
49.Which animal showed gratitude according to the passage?
A.The rhesus monkey.

A team from Shenzhen Bao’an High School has invented a medicine box to meet the needs of people with eye problems. So far, the medicine box has won many national prizes.

A.They were not hungry at all.
B.The humpback whale.
