Every winter, when the surface of Chagan Lake in Jilin Province freezes to more than half a metre thick, something amazing happens. Thousands of fishermen come onto the ice. They cut square holes in the ice and use a 1,000-year-old way to catch fish. This is Chagan Lake ice fishing, a national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
In the past, the fishermen had to dig holes by hand. Today, they still use traditional methods. Horses walk in circles to pull a wooden tool and long fishing lines are slowly pulled up from under the ice. In January 2026, the first catch of the season weighed over 50,000 kilograms. Visitors from across the country come to watch the “red catch”—thousands of big fish on the ice.
But the biggest change is not on the ice—it is on the phone. As soon as the fish are pulled out of the icy water, they are shown live online to customers across China. About 60 percent of the fish are sold online. Many young fishermen have become online hosts. They show the freezing cold, the horses and the dancing fish, and then send the fish to buyers within 24 hours.
Local people say the tradition is not dying. Instead, it is meeting the internet. Because the fish are sent to buyers within 24 hours, customers across China can enjoy fish that were under the ice just a day before. Old skills and new technology are working together, and the name Chagan Lake is now famous to more people than ever.

Many people think birds have simple minds, but ravens (渡鸦) are surprisingly different. They are believed to be as intelligent as monkeys and even humans. One of the most surprising things they can do is to make plans for the future.
In one experiment, ravens were trained to use a tool to get food. Later, they were given a choice among several things, including the tool and other useless objects. Most of the ravens chose the tool even with no food treat at once, showing that they could remember how to use the tools and plan ahead for the treat later.
Ravens are also good at solving real-life problems. They use sticks to dig insects out of trees, and some even drop nuts on roads so that cars can break them open. They can solve problems that need several steps, like using a short stick to get a longer one, then using the long stick to reach food.
Their intelligence isn’t just about solving problems. Ravens have rich social lives. They remember different faces, including those of other ravens and humans. They hate people who have treated them badly, and even teach their young to stay away from those people.
Sadly, many kinds of ravens are suffering from losing their living places and facing pollution, so scientists hope that, as we learn more about their intelligence, people will see them as more than just “common birds” and take action to protect them.

Yin Yuzhen is a Chinese woman who has spent 40 years planting trees in the Mu Us Desert (毛乌素沙漠).
In 1985, the 19-year-old Yin moved from Shaanxi to Inner Mongolia (内蒙古) to get married. She could not believe her eyes—her new home was a house half covered with sand. Strong winds blew sand inside every night. To stop the sand from covering her home, she decided to plant trees in the desert. “I would rather die planting trees than be bullied by the desert,” she said. She carried young trees as heavy as 100 kilograms on her back and climbed the sand hills day after day. Life was very hard. She often had no water, no electricity (电), and little food to eat.
In 1999, Robert Sakolsky, an American teacher from Pittsburgh, came to teach English in Luoyang, Henan. One day he saw a TV show about Yin’s fight against the desert. He was deeply moved. He went back to the US and raised $5,000 for her—about as much as she could make in 20 years. In 2000, he visited Yin and was shocked to see she only had simple tools and bamboo sticks. With the money, Yin bought stronger young trees. More of them lived.
After Sakolsky returned to America, Yin never forgot him. She spent 26 years looking for him. This May, she posted a video on Douyin asking for help. People found him in just 48 hours.
On August 23, 2026, after flying more than 30 hours, the two finally met at an airport in Ordos. Both of them cried. “It is a wonderful thing.” Sakolsky said. The American teacher and the Chinese tree planter have become close friends. Their story shows us that kindness can cross countries.

Grow with Changes
Everyone has a role model in their heart. For me, it is my English teacher, Ms. Li.
In the past, I was too shy to speak in public. I always kept silent in class. Ms. Li noticed my problem. She encouraged me to try and told me, “Believe in yourself.” With her help, I practiced speaking every day. Gradually, I became confident and active.
This experience taught me that changes are hard but meaningful. A good role model is like a light. I will keep growing and become a better person in the future.
